Luke Chadwick with Bassingbourn futsal players Former Cambridge and Manchester United star Luke Chadwick visited the college to run a Futsal try-out session. Futsal is one of the fastest growing indoor sports in the world and the only form of small-sided football that is officially recognised by both UEFA and FIFA. A five-a-side game with up to nine substitutes permitted, the game is played on a flat indoor pitch with hockey sized goals and a smaller ball with a reduced bounce. Cambridge United have invested heavily in the sport with its own team (Cambridge United Futsal Club) which competes in the FA National League Midlands Division Two. Luke Chadwick is the club’s star signing; having had an involvement with Cambridge United Futsal Schools and Futsal Scholarship Programme this summer. The purpose of the Bassingbourn session was to introduce the Cambridge United FC Futsal Education Programme to sports students in years 10 and 11. The Cambridge United Futsal Education Scholarship offers an opportunity for 16 to 18-year-olds to pursue a Futsal and Education scholarship with the football club, gaining a Level 3 BTEC as well as playing Futsal every day.
Our U16 boys and U16 girls futsal teams stormed their way through the regional futsal tournament at Swavesey Village College. The girls were victorious regional champions, while the boys finished as regional runners up after losing on penalties in the final. Our teams were undefeated in normal time and played fantastically. Both teams were presented with the winners and runners up trophies at half time during the Cambridge United .v. Accrington Stanley game. Each and every one of them was a credit to the school, we are very proud of their success. The girls are photographed here at the match.
