March 2018 Message from SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASp I have been sitting here in front of my computer monitor for about 30 minutes now trying to come up with an appropriate, all-encompassing title for this month’s President’s Message. I have been searching for the perfect two or three word phrase that would convey to the readers of SCA President this newsletter how the Winter Gala event Steve Moore, PE, CASp Barrish Pelham & Associates, Inc. went. I think I got it right…

“The Sacramento Claims Association is a professional organization fostering contact and communication among its members and others in the insurance claims industry. The cornerstone of the Sacramento Claims Association is rooted in four primary areas: Education; Charitable; Communication; and Social.”

• Electronic Leak Detection & Repair • Infrared Leak Testing • Sub-Slab Plumbing • Sewer Line Video Scans • Pools, Spas & Fountains

The first ‘AWESOME’ goes to the venue for the party, Studio 817. It was a bit plain walking up to it, but boy oh boy did that change in a hurry! The greeting room/cocktail area was spacious and set up well with old barn wood planks and door. The main seating room was even better with a wall of lights, exposed roof framing, and an outdoor seating area. The venue set the pace and the attitude for the evening!

The next ‘AWESOME’ goes to our association and sponsors of the event! We had nearly 75 people confirmed for dinner. We had nine (9) different sponsors for the event, contributing at several different levels. Thank you so much to: Artland Construction; CRDN Capitol Corridor; DH Construction; RegasGroup Environmental Consultants; PW Stephens Environmental; Barrish Pelham; Statewide; Water Smoke & Mold Removal; and York Specialized Loss Adjusting. We couldn’t do any of these social events without your continued support, membership, and sponsorship.

The final and ‘most hugest AWESOME’ goes out to Jason Kettlehut and Tami Umland. These two were responsible for everything that happened that night including the presentation of the SCA Lifetime Achievement Award to Don Sams, the raffle, the awesome DJ, and the wonderful catering company! The SCA Board of Directors has decided to give Jason a new nickname and I think it fits perfectly! So, the next time you see Jason at an SCA event call him by his new nickname…Rockstar! He certainly deserves it. What a fantastic effort and a fantastic night! Thank you Tami and Rockstar! With the arrival of Spring in March, the SCA is very pleased to return to The Blue Cue Thursday, March 15th, for an “SCA Blue Cue March Madness” mixer event! We will be completing our brackets for the ensuing March Madness, shooting some pool, and generally having some relaxing down time together. I encourage to you invite your clients, work associates, bosses, family and friends to join in on the fun. The SCA Events Calendar continues on with luncheons, the golf

tournament, and more Social Events throughout the year. The next luncheon event chiseled in stone is an April Educational luncheon. We haven’t determined the presenter yet, but will let everyone know as soon as possible. We’re hoping for a representative from the Department of Insurance to give us an update on the California fires. That’s still tentative at this point, however. May 11, 2018 is the date for our annual golf tournament. Returning to the fabulous Turkey Creek Golf Course, this promises to be another great day. We are pleased to announce that we will once again be partnering with the Firefighters Burn Institute as our charitable beneficiary for this event. Remember, you need to have your SCA Membership dues paid in full to participate in the golf tournament as a player or a sponsor. I am truly looking forward to another fantastic Spring and Summer for the SCA. Please remember my door is always open to our Membership. If you have any questions, advice, luncheon suggestions, or even comments about Mathieu Schwartz’s golf swing, please do not hesitate to contact me. See you at The Cue! Thanks,

to honor those who have made a distinct impact in the industry with this new Lifetime Achievement Award. He then introduced Mr. Bob Lund, of Sams & Associates (now York Risk Services), to give a proper introduction of the evening’s guest of honor. Bob Lund, a major player in the growth and success at Sams & Associates for the past 23 years, provided an indepth “Reader’s Digest” introduction of Don Sams, outlining the chronological highlights and growth of the company. Clearly, Don Sams has done some amazing work over the years in growing his business. The Sacramento Bee, in fact, named Sams & Associates in their list of top 20 growing businesses at one point, stated Mr. Lund. Don came to the microphone to a standing ovation, and received his award from SCA Social Committee Chair, and event organizer, Jason Kettlehut, along with SCA President, Steve Moore. Gracious as always, Don thanked many of the people instrumental to his success, and acknowledged all who played a role. He shared a

few brief stories from his experiences along the way, including a bit about his time as president of the SCA, and concluded with a call for the industry to continue supporting the association in all its endeavors. The Raffle was held shortly thereafter, with some dancing and socializing rounding out the evening. “It was really great for the SCA to return to the formal setting of the Winter Gala,” stated president Steve Moore. “We look forward to another strong year,” he added. Kettlehut thanked all the evening’s sponsors, whose contributions truly made for a much more festive event. Sponsors included the following companies: Artland Construction; Barrish Pelham, Inc.; CRDN Capitol Corridor; DH Construction; PW Stehens Environmental; RegasGroup Environmental Consultants; Water Smoke & Statewide Construction; Mold Removal; and York Risk Services

Flood Insurance Availability continued from page 8

American National's flood insurance program is a new entry into the private flood insurance market in California and does not replace the National Flood Insurance Program, which currently provides the majority of flood coverage written in the state. This new residential private flood insurance program offers consumers a number of coverage features, including residential building property, personal property or contents, debris removal, and additional living expenses (ALE) or lost rents. The policy term is 12 months. "Providing consumers with more choices may lead more residents to consider flood coverage," added Jones. "Many areas of California are subject to flooding from severe storms or heavy rains. I encourage more insurers to consider entering this market." Last October the department approved a private flood insurance product by Homeowners Choice Property and Casualty Insurance Company. Homeowners Choice also covers residential building property, personal property or contents, debris removal, and ALE. The company is offering limited policies to homeowners and renters whose properties have had no flood claims in the last six years. Commissioner Jones encourages consumers to prepare for potential disaster by using their smart phone to record a home inventory, catalog their belongings and store them in their cloud account. Residents should also consider scanning deeds, insurance policies and other important documents and store them in their cloud for easy access. The department has a number of resources to help consumers with insurance coverage or claim questions. Consumers with questions or needing assistance should call the consumer hotline at 800-927-4357.

Membership Drive for 2018 Is On! - Join/Renew Now The Sacramento Claims Association Membership Committee would like to encourage you to join and/or renew your annual membership to the association. Member dues provide a significant financial support to the organization, and a strong membership helps to keep a non-profit like SCA viable and alive. Without all of us together there would be no SCA. “This organization could not maintain the strong standing we enjoy today without the support of all our members,” stated SCA President Steve Moore. The organization has worked diligently to continue to provide programs and events of interest and value to claims adjusters and the surrounding claims service community. “The Sacramento Claims Association is always committed to maintaining a high degree of professional courtesy within our ranks.” In addition to the organization actively taking measures to continue to raise its standing within the community at large, the association has been building on its sphere of local charitable causes to support. The SCA Board has opted to continue to offer annual FREE Memberships to insurance carrier adjusters (with an optional suggested $10 donation going to the charitable fund).
