END OF YEAR SHOW BRANDING
We want Leeds Arts University students to design the concept and promotional materials for our Annual end of year show. This will include the Foundation End of Year show which takes place 17- 24 May 2018, and the Degree End of Year show which takes place on 8 - 14 June 2018. The short-listed entries will work with design Agency Peter & Paul to develop their concepts, and have the opportunity to present the final designs to our Senior Management Team. The winning design will be applied to a suite of promotional materials produced by our marketing team. The concept should reflect the essence and purpose of our end of year show - namely showcasing the hard work and talent of all of our exhibiting students. The end of year show is a University-wide exhibition and includes higher education and further education. The design concept needs to be representative of all these courses. Competition entries must be innovative and have a strong visual identity. The concept should be as creative and eye-catching as possible, and imagery/photography can be included. The Leeds Arts University logo must be visible and legible on every design.
I want to take on this brief in collaboration with Sammy, a graphic design student. This will allow us to manage the workload and create an outcome that is different to the past, mostly type based, campaigns. Having the support of a graphic designer will help to produce a outcome that is professional and suited to the environment in which it is being shown. I want to create something bright, bold and playful to show the vibrancy of the work taking place in Leeds Art University.
END OF YEAR SHOW BRANDING Development We chose to move forwards with the grid composition as it highlights the various sections of the university. The facilities offered here is what makes it unique, this therefore became the focus of the concept and communication. The idea is to showcase the little things that go into making work for the final year show; the coffee cups, the paint, the pencils. Alongside these elements are a number of hands doing things like holding rubbers, drawing etc., this puts further emphasis on to the selected show name ‘In The Making’.
The large artwork was designed to have many small squares that allowed for it to be taken apart and used on different assets and applications. Using just two squares was ideal for the Twitter dimensions, and single square images would work on Instagram and as small poster/leaflet designs. The large poster could be broken down into small sections and remain in touch with an overall design style and concept. I chose to screen print this design as I felt that it was the most relevant way to approach the outcome. This further brings home the idea of ‘Making’ due to its tactile and textured appearance.
Evaluation I am happy with this outcome and feel that it is a good alternative to the usual graphic, minimalist, type based design of the End of Year Show. I have thoroughly enjoyed this collaboration experience and have felt throughout that we both had an equal part to play in bringing this idea into fruition. I look forward to working in the partnership again in the future.
