Project 1 Building Awareness

Visual Storytelling Design an orihon style folding booklet visualizing the unique personality and character of your interview partner and their relationship to nature, specifically around water. collect information (see questions below) about him/her in order to interpret and transform the research into a compelling design using storytelling, poetry, quotes, lyrics etc.

Brief Emphasis will be placed upon original concept development and the exploration of diverse processes, techniques and methods. (photography, screen printing, xerography‌) you will be expected to experiment and explore, thereby expanding on your visualizing skills.

Questions to be Answered 1. Tell me a memorable experience around water from your life. 2. What is your relationship to nature? 3. What is your favorite ocean animal? 4. What is your favorite color? 5. What is your favorite landscape? 6. What makes you feel connected with the world? 7. What are you passionate about? 8. Who is your favorite writer/poet/songwriter/designer? Why? 9. What does flow mean to you? 10. How is water meaningful in your life?

Trying to combine different elements that Mel liked and creating a story out of it was hard, I must admit. Drawing it out as one full drawing looked nice but when thinking about how to make sure each panel flowed cohesively when folded was the tricky part.

Getting other peoples view on what I can fix or change helped me a lot. My orginal draft, when folded, had a large disconnect between the text.

What to improve

What worked well

What I learned

If I could improve on something it would be the playfulness of text. Typography was a hard part for me and trying to make it fun to play with but also legible. I would also like to fix some of the blossoms in the beginning to make it not look like pink clouds.

I got to create something that was made for someone else. Using photoshop and learning more aobut the different textures was something fun to do and giving this project a mixture of Mel’s personality and mine. The transition between the front and the back was something I was proud of.

I learned designing something based on someone is really hard. Everything you could be thinking can be very different on paper. I struggled with the text and images on the folds of the orihon and making sure each square looked like something interesting yet cohesive with the other folds.

Project 2 Discovering the relationship between design and human experience

Problem Statement Creative work reaches deep into our intuitive and unconscious minds, into our hearts and feelings. The sea change design process helped to define your calling and its embedded meaning. Now you will examine the ways in which this abstract idea can be interpreted and represented in visual form, offering clarity, embedded meaning and understanding to the viewer. Stay away from literal translation and use metaphors and story telling for your design. Emphasis will be placed upon original concept development and the exploration of diverse processes, techniques and methods. You will be expected to experiment and explore, thereby expanding on your visualizing skills.

Goal Visualize a highly abstract idea that sources from your growing awareness of the deeper aspects of yourself, in your own personal voice by exploring design elements, typography and diverse processes. eg: drawing, photography, xerography, abstraction, typography, collage, textures, sculpture, different types of materials: paper, fabric, vellum, cardboard, metal, wood, foil

Inspiration in shape We were trying to find harmonic patterns within nature and it was nice to be studying something natural to create something inspiration. I liked how the sharpness of the crystals looked but after thinking about my meaning I decided to go with meanders because of how smooth the lines flow and how theres a beginning and end to the meander, like a maze almost.

Audience and colors I wanted my poster to appeal to children, teenagers, adults, and elders. Anxiety can happen to anyone and I wanted to my poster to be able to bring hope to them. I wanted to see how I can create a poster with bright colors to create a different mood in my poster.

How can I

to create bridges of hope and inspiration? with young people around the world

Second draft I tried tying the meanders to have a cross over path to show togetherness and the colors still trying to be vibrant without putting the darkness in the poster. I thought to add some shape to represent the young people.

Project 2 | Analysis

What to improve I would of liked to improve on my placement of text. I struggled with getting my message across with the flow of the lines of the meanders.

What worked well I really am happy with how the colors turned out and how it was super colorful. I originally had a dark background to represent the sadness and anxiety people would feel but after playing around many times I decided to make the poster something happy and bring hope to people. I wanted to show how although there are bad times there will always be something good in the end.

What I learned I learned that people can create something from any experience, whether good or bad, into something inspirational and beautiful. It was a learning process to express my vulnarubality into something that shows hope.

Our group came together based off our similar calling intentions. We were brain storming right away figuring what we wanted to do to help the world.

How can pura ripple its knowledge to human kind in order to create sustainable sanctuaries that cleanse the world?

Project 3 | Notes, thumbnails, concepts

Finding the logo/ font Before we thought of pura, we were trying to think names that would work for our company, ex: sanctuary, oasis, haven. We liked the word pure and we thought of the name pura and it stuck.

We started to search which font we wanted to use. Criteria for the font was san serif, smooth, not too thin but also not too thick.

What to improve

What worked well

What I learned

If we had a little more time, I would want to improve the ripple story page to make it look neater and also work on the area of isolation page and learn more about it. As a group, we all wished we were able to meet in person more often but we did communicate a lot to make sure things looked cohesive.

I would say the color choices turned out a lot better than the drafts from before. We dealt with a lot of problems with the colors making sure we show purity without using the color white in the logo. I think what else worked well was the overall pages and how cohesive everything turned out. We gave each person some pages to do and with a lot of communication, it turned out better than expected.

I learned that everyone has different opinions on how they want something to look. With our group luckily we were on board from the start but in the middle we started to get different opinions and it started to get confusing.
