“Hospitality in Greece” 29/3-6/4/2014 Day by day plan Saturday the 29th of March Welcome of our Dutch friends (pupils and teachers). Arrival in Athens, El.Venizelos Airport, around 11:10. Transfer by the families to Ilioupolis and settle in with the families that will offer the accommodation. Meeting at Ilioupolis square for a walk around Ilioupolis. Sunday the 30th of March Acropolis – Acropolis Museum – Plaka • 9:00 Departure from Metro Station “Ilioupolis” • 10:00 Visit the Acropolis (visit the architectural masterpieces of the Golden Age of Athens: the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erectheion and finally “the harmony between material and spirit”, the monument that “puts order in the mind”, the Parthenon). • 12:00 Visit to the truly amazing new Acropolis Museum It houses priceless finds from the Acropolis monuments that represent its history and function as the most important religious center of ancient Athens • 13:30 – 18:00 Tour of Ancient Market – Thission- Keramikos- Plaka. The area is full of winding streets and lies around the Acropolis. It's well known for its small shops, restaurants, and as a good example of local domestic architecture. Lunch (optional). • 19:30 Departure for Metro Station “Ilioupolis” . Monday the 31st of March All- day tour to Mycenae – Nafplio – Epidavros • Departure from school at 7:15 – Arrival at school at 19:00 • 9:15 -10:30 Visit the Epidaurus theatre which is the most beautiful and well preserved ancient theatre famous for its superb acoustics as well as the very well preserved construction. Epidaurus festival has been recreating the ancient Greek classic theatre for more than 40 years. • 10:30 -11:30 Departure and arrival at Mycenae • 11:30 – 13:00 Visit Mycenae 'Rich in Gold', the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon, first sung by Homer in his epics, is the most important and richest palatial centre of the Late Bronze Age in Greece. • 13:15 Departure and arrival to Nafplion – Lunch (optional). • 14:30-17:30 Visit Nafplio, which is a charming seaside town in Peloponnese. Nafplio was the first capital of Greece. The town is quite picturesque and combines the beauty of the Venetian era, with the grandeur of the 19th century neoclassical period. • 17:30 Departure for Athens • 19:00 Arrival at school

Work at 1st High School of Ilioupolis 8:15 till 14:00 our students will work in our e-twinning project inside our school. Lunch with the families. The afternoon is free. Wednesday the 2nd of April Tour of Marathon, Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon. • Departure from school at 9:00- Arrival at 21:00 • 10:30 Visit the Marathon Tumulus It contains the remains of 192 Athenian warriors who died during the famous Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, when 100,000 Persians were defeated by 11,000 Greek soldiers. This was one of the most important battles in history. Marathon has been cited by historians as the battle that saved Western culture in its youngest days and allowed it to survive and flourish. • 12:00 – 13:30 Visit to the Marathon Run Museum. • 13:30 Departure for Sounion ( Follow the original course of Marathon Run) • 14:00 – 16:00 Lunch in the area (included). • 18:00 Visit of Cape Sounion and the famous Temple of Poseidon. From there one can have a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf and the Aegean Sea and enjoy watching a unique sunset. • 19:30 Departure for Ilioupolis Thursday the 3rd of April Work at 1st High School of Ilioupolis 8:15 till 14:00 our students will work in our e-twinning project inside our school. Friday the 4th of April All- day tour to Poros –island • Departure from school at 7:15 – Arrival at school at 22:00 - Lunch (optional). • The town of Poros is built in the shape of an amphitheatre over two hills. In antiquity Poros consisted in fact of two islands, Sphería and Kalávria, but the last explosion of the Méthana volcano in 273 BC radically changed the morphology of the area. Sphería was cut off from Méthana, and in this way Póros took its present-day form. Lush pine trees vegetation, crystal clear beaches, a lively waterfront adorned with shops, cosy cafes and restaurants, a picturesque capital (it has been declared protected settlement) with grand traditional mansions and picturesque cobbled streets, as well as a wide selection of entertainment venues are the ingredients of this quiet, yet cosmopolitan, destination that attracts visitors from all age groups.
• Peer into the history and tradition of the island through a visit to its Archaeological and its Folklore Museums. Visit also the Temple of Poseidon (built circa 520 BC; the Athenian rhetorician, Dimosthenes, committed suicide in this temple by drinking poison, pursued by Philip, the King of Macedonia); the Zoodohos Pigi Monastery –the most impressive ecclesiastical monument on the island; the Russian naval base and the Residence of Governor Kapodistrias. Follow a route through the narrow streets of the town that will lead you up to a hill, where the trademark of the island stands: the historic Clock tower, where you can relax and enjoy a panoramic view of the whole town.
