STAYING AWARE AND PREPARED

Welcome to Top Crop Manager ’s 2021 Fungicide Guide for Eastern Canada. The charts within this guide list products registered (at time of publication) to fight various common field crop diseases, from corn and soybeans to potatoes and canola. This guide is meant to be a comprehensive resource tool, providing you with the information you need to better make disease-management decisions.

The products listed in these charts play an important role when it comes to keeping your fields disease-free, but with various factors contributing to disease risks, it’s just as crucial to use all of the tools in your agronomic toolbox. Take the necessary steps to not only manage disease and pathogen development, but also prevent sensitivity and resistance to fungicides. Much like herbicide resistance has become prevalent in many regions and counties across Canada, fungicide resistance or insensitivity is a looming threat.

When choosing products for the coming year, review the history of fungicides used on your farm and take note of active ingredients. Rotating modes of action can help reduce the development, as can proper crop rotation and proper timing. As always, this guide is compiled with help of multiple resources and companies, and is as accurate as possible at publication time. Growers should always double-check product labels and consult a professional to avoid errors.

A STRONG FIRST SEASON FOR MIRAVIS® FUNGICIDES

Whether growers were looking to protect wheat from Fusarium head blight, or keep leaf diseases and DON out of their corn, the first year of Miravis® fungicides ushered in a new era of disease protection in Eastern Canada.

Here’s just a small sampling of what our growers saw and experienced in their fields this past season.

So, where do we start?

Well, to do this story proper justice, we need to first take a quick look at the mighty molecule, ADEPIDYN®, that’s at the heart of all Miravis® fungicides.

Manage for yield and quality without compromise Growers in the heart of Canada’s corn belt – and beyond – captured lightning in a bottle with Miravis® Neo fungicide.

Powered by three modes of action – including ADEPIDYN® – Miravis® Neo delivers preventative, early curative and long-lasting activity against the broadest range of corn diseases from pre tassel through tassel.

Throughout the 2020 season, we saw Miravis® Neo effectively manage leaf diseases like Fusarium and Gibberella ear rots to preserve quality. Miravis® Neo also kept plants greener, for an increased chance at higher yields.

“Miravis® Neo was the leading option for us in DON reduction for corn so we thought we would give it a try and we saw a yield advantage,” says Jesse Kloepfer with Lola May Farms in Harley, ON.

11.1 bu/ac advantage with Miravis® Neo over untreated

Miravis® Neo vs. Untreated ROI = $25.58/ac

Power Next generation — An SDHI fungicide so different it’s placed in its own sub-classification.

Stamina Lipophilic part — Enables greater length of control against a broader range of diseases.

ADEPIDYN® is a next-generation, Group 7 SDHI fungicide with a unique chemical structure that helps it deliver powerful, long-lasting protection against a very broad spectrum of key diseases, including Fusarium head blight and Gibberella ear rot.

ROI figure assumes current 2021 price for new corn at ~$5.50 * 11.1 bu/ac minus the cost of product and application.

A winter wheat wonder

We watched as winter wheat crops across Eastern Canada stayed healthier and cleaner for longer when treated with Miravis® Ace in 2020. It was truly a difference in the field that anyone could see.

“When we walked the plots with the Syngenta reps and they were pointing out the difference while we were hand-shelling wheat heads – the contrast between the treated zone and the untreated zone was phenomenal,” says Randy Chevalier, of Setterington’s Fertilizer Service in Leamington, ON.

Miravis® Ace provides preventative and long-lasting protection from all significant Fusarium species, even under hot, humid or wet conditions during head emergence and flowering. This helps prevent loss of grade and reduces the number of Fusarium-damaged kernels.

We also asked growers from all over Eastern Canada to show us how Miravis® Ace stacked up against competitor wheat fungicides on yield. As you can see here – the results tell a pretty convincing story.

Like we said at the start, this only scratches the surface of what Miravis fungicides delivered in 2020. To stay up to date with all the latest imagery, data, technical info and more, visit Syngenta.ca/Miravis.

Performance evaluations are based on internal trials, field observations and/or public information. Data from multiple locations and years should be consulted whenever possible. Individual results may vary depending on local growing, soil and weather conditions.

ROI Assumptions = Miravis® Ace including NIS is $7/ac premium to competitors; application cost between products is the same; soft red wheat cash price = $7.40 (Oct 21, 2020) Source: Trials conducted by growers in Ontario in 2020
