FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Although the falling leaves of autumn signal an end-time in the natural world, their blazing color heralds new beginnings in the academic world. While he never spent autumn in New England, St. Ignatius Loyola sparked the imaginations of his fellow Jesuits when he charged them to “Go set the world on fire!” This fall, our fourth-grade students of the Class of Castiglione (2020) became heirs of that great mission and set out on the five-year journey to high school and college. The eighth grade Class of LaBran (2016) began applying to rigorous secondary schools, while last year’s graduating Class of Bezuszka (2015) began their high school careers at some of the finest schools in the Boston area. The young men from the Class of Grande (2011) became the newest students on the campuses of Boston College, Dartmouth College, St. Peter’s College and half a dozen other universities, while graduates from the Class of Zipoli (2007), degrees in hand, launched careers that will give meaning to the Jesuit motto “men for others.” At Nativity, we always begin with the end in mind, with our eyes on the finish, and what it will take to run the race, complete the work, and achieve our goals. I can’t help but think of Jesuit exemplars like Stanislaus Kostka and Miguel Pro, for whom the classes of 2012 and 2008 are named. Both men, from different centuries and different continents, model the kind of dedication, persistence, and fidelity to that mission we strive to instill in our students. If Kostka could overcome family objections and walk 350 miles to Rome to become a Jesuit, if Pro could remain true to his call to preach the Gospel, even before a firing squad, then what should stand in the way of a young man from a struggling family in Boston seeking to become the first in his family to earn a college degree? If he prepares well and persists through adversity, won’t God be with him? Won’t we? This is the story we want to share with you in our annual report this year: the work of Nativity Prep over the arc of a young man’s life, from the start at age 9, when he begins preparing for academic success in high school and college, to the finish more than a decade later, when he completes his degree. Thanks to the generosity of so many friends, families, faculty members, and benefactors, the work we started a quarter-century ago continues to show amazing results in the lives of the students we serve. What they learn at Nativity - the commitment to excellence, the will to work hard, the spirit of gratitude and generosity - abides with them throughout their lives, and truly sets the whole world on fire. Gratefully,

Rev. John C. Wronski, SJ 2 01 5 AN N UAL R E PORT OF G IV IN G

WHERE THEY LEARN TO GRADUATE

Possibility. Opportunity. Excellence. Even justice. They all begin with a diploma. That’s what we believe at Nativity Prep. That’s what we teach our students, from the time they arrive as nine-year-olds. Advancing to ever higher levels of learning is what they work for and pursue – for themselves, for their families, for the greater glory of God. After five years of hard work and tireless support, they graduate. Then they keep going. To high school. To college. And beyond. Graduation, you see, is not a single event in the lives of Nativity alums. It’s a habit. One they learn here.

ACADEMICS

WHAT IT TAKES AGE 9-14

CLOSE THE EDUCATION GAP School days that last more than 12 hours, a school year that runs on an 11-month calendar, and a faculty of master teachers with decades of experience not only ignite academic progress, they change trajectories. A rigorous curriculum that challenges students, individualized instruction that meets them where they are, and ongoing academic support from a dedicated corps of tutors and teaching fellows allows each boy to achieve to his highest potential in middle school.

ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES STRENGTHEN THEIR HEARTS AND BODIES Sports teach team work, persistence, grit and grace. Varsity teams in four sports – soccer, basketball, baseball and lacrosse – introduce students to interscholastic competition during their formative middle-school years. Junior varsity and club teams teach fundamentals and build skills, while after-school clubs ranging from newspaper and architecture to community service and debate expose students to extracurricular activities that may spark lifelong passions or inspire careers.

Nativity’s extended day includes 7 hours of academics followed by sports and afternoon enrichment activities.

WHAT IT TAKES AGE 9-14

SPIRITUAL FORMATION GROWS THEIR SOULS Every day begins with community prayer. Students gain a foundation in Christian teaching while also attaining basic religious literacy in other faith traditions. The school community worships together, celebrates religious feasts and holidays together, strives to practice Gospel values together in the everyday life of the school. The boys learn that loving God and loving one another form the core of becoming a Man for Others.

SERVICE MAKES THEM MEN FOR OTHERS Concrete acts of kindness and compassion toward those whose needs are greater than their own help mold boys into men ready to serve. Walking to fight hunger or visiting the elderly or serving a meal to the homeless, Nativity boys learn to practice the works of mercy. Service to vulnerable people and communities teaches them lasting lessons about the needs of the world and about their own promise. They learn that their acts of charity and their promotion of justice today can lead to change tomorrow.

Spiritual formation, community service, and brotherhood impart lasting values.

HARD WORK AND HOPE BECOME HABITS

Preparation. Character. Desire. Drive. They take these qualities with them when they go, off to some of the finest high schools in the Boston area and off to discover the passions and pursuits that will shape their dreams for the future. Open to growth, up to the challenges that await, eager to explore new fields of knowledge and test themselves on new fields of play, they graduate from Nativity with their eyes set on their next graduation. But they don’t do it alone. The assistance they receive in preparing for, applying to and gaining admission at top high schools continues as they ready themselves for college. Whatever struggles or setbacks they confront on the road to college, they know that their own resilience and our support don’t quit easy.

HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT

WHAT IT TAKES AGE 14-18

LAUNCHES THEM Applying to selective schools and choosing the right one takes considerable preparation and judgment. Nativity boys get the benefit of both, through an individualized guidance and placement process that seeks the best high-school fit for each student. Test-prep, application assistance, interview coaching and financial aid advice are just a few of the services that the school offers to its 7th and 8th graders. A deep understanding of students and close partnerships with secondary school admissions officers produce strong results and rewarding matches for our students.

GRADUATE SUPPORT IN HIGH SCHOOL GETS THEM TO THEIR NEXT DIPLOMA It’s important that they transition well in 9th grade, that they find friends, manage their time, keep up their grades, contribute to the extracurricular life of their new schools. They need to make good choices about what courses to take, what help to seek, what pitfalls to avoid. That’s where Graduate Support continues to come into their lives, to keep them on track and in pursuit of their goals.

MAGIS MEANS GOING THE EXTRA MILE

Persistence. Commitment. Gratitude. Generosity. These are the virtues our alumni exemplify, and the gifts they share with the world. Their success, through high school, college, and beyond, is our mission and our reward. That’s why we stand with them offering comprehensive graduate support every step of the way. When the choices or the demands seem too daunting, we are there with encouragement and expert advice. When resources are scarce, we step in to fill the gap. When that hard-won degree is earned, we rejoice with them. And when our graduates return with a desire to serve the school that launched them, our gratitude knows no bounds. They show the world that it’s not just about their own accomplishments. It’s about making journeys like theirs possible for others.

COLLEGE SERVICES

WHAT IT TAKES AGE 18 & BEYOND

KEEP THEM GRADUATING WITH DEGREES In the second half of high school, when the college selection and admission process begins, Nativity grads count on us to help them navigate yet another important transition in their lives with the right information and the right support. Matriculation at an institution where they are likely to thrive and graduate is followed by ongoing guidance about how to pay for it, choose the right major, stick with it, and graduate with a degree. Whether undergraduates need to fill a small tuition gap or find a summer internship, Nativity can lend a hand. The community of support behind them is committed to putting a degree within reach.

ALUMNI RELATIONS KEEP THEM COMING BACK AND GIVING BACK Professional networking, career services, mentoring, and spiritual support are made available to alumni establishing themselves in the world. Opportunities to volunteer, socialize, and give back to Nativity allow alums to enrich their lives, support one another, and strengthen the school community. Together, we forge the future of Nativity Prep.

As a member of Nativity Prep’s Student Sponsorship Program, benefactors have the opportunity to experience the meaningful impact that Nativity Prep has on a student’s life. Nativity Prep Student Sponsors commit $6,000 annually to help pay for one year of a student’s tuition and witness the transformation that a student makes from the time he enters Nativity Prep, until he graduates. In return, Nativity students better understand the meaning of the words gratitude and generosity. We welcome your participation in this important program.

PERSIST A STRONG FINISH

2015 SECURING THE PROMISE CAMPAIGN

Like our students who know how to rise to challenges and finish the work they begin, our benefactors continue to drive the success of our campaign and carry it toward its completion. Approaching the $9 million mark, the Securing the Promise campaign is nearing the completion of its goals. Thanks to the generosity of those who have supported this multi-year capital effort, Nativity continues to serve more students, through the addition of a fourth grade; the school’s upgraded technology and lab resources now support state-of-the-art instruction; a growing master faculty ensures a consistently high quality of teaching and learning; and our expanded Graduate Support office is providing everything from college tours to last-dollar aid to alumni making their way to and through college. We are deeply grateful to those who have brought us from the launch of this campaign to its homestretch, with our $10 million goal now well within sight. To find out more about the goals and progress of the Securing the Promise campaign, or to explore opportunities for supporting it, contact Anne Murphy, Vice President for Advancement and External Relations at 857-728-0031 ext. 14.
