2006-2007 • Palmetto’s

Welcome back to school! I hope you had a wonderful summer filled with fun times and relaxation. As the new principal, I am thrilled to be at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School and I look forward to the 2010-2011 school year. As we kick off the new year, I challenge every one of us to think about our school motto, “Understanding Hearts and Positive Attitudes make a great school”. How do people with understanding hearts behave? What are their goals in life? How do they treat others? What makes a person who has a positive attitude special? How do they influence people around them? As we go through the school year, we will be talking and writing about some of these questions. Secondly, I challenge students to get involved at LEMS. Being involved in a club or sport provides students with opportunities to develop new relationships with teachers and students. There are many exciting opportunities to become involved. For example, the Science Club allows students who possess an interest in science to experiment with ideas while the Step Team gives students with rhythm an opportunity to move to a beat. Athletes can thrive on the athletic fields or courts while other Leopards cheer as part of the Pride and Spirit Club. Regardless of your interest, find a place to contribute to LEMS. We need you! Thirdly, I challenge parents to get involved at LEMS. You, as the parent, are the most important part of your student’s educational experience. You are his/her first teacher and you influence his/her outlook on education and life in general. Please monitor your student’s academic progress closely. Each nine weeks grading period, you will receive three progress reports and a report card. In addition, please monitor your student’s attendance. If a student is not sick, we expect him/her to be in school. Teachers look forward to seeing students and your student is missed when he/she is not at LEMS. We also need parents to participate in the Parent Teacher Organization. LEMS is your student’s school and you are an important stakeholder so get involved! Finally, I challenge all of us to make the 2010-2011 school year the best ever. It takes all of us working together to make LEMS a great school. The family atmosphere, care and concern for students, parental involvement, and academic achievement will not happen independently of each other; rather, they feed off of each other in an environment where “Understanding Hearts and Positive Attitudes” thrive. I am indeed blessed to be part of such a wonderful learning community.
