T I L I N G Ysabelle Gamoso, Christian Volkmann This project explores tiling as a construction method as curated

by Cino Zucchi & Luisa Collina’s book Sempering. For us tiling is defined as the repetition of a unit mounted on a structural frame. Through a series of models, we explored different aspects of tiling including scale, translucency, and structural techniques. While tiling is often used for facades and decoration, we tried to explore the types of space which could be created between structure and tile. Our exploration resulted in large pavillion canopied along the stairway bypassing St. Nicolas Park.

Nicole Checo, Ahu Aydogan This project aims to create a library, servicing students and faculty of the German University of Technology in Muscat, Oman.

Taking into consideration hot and arid climate conditions, this project utilizes passive cooling techniques such as night cooling, cross ventilation, and earth coupling to mitagate extreme temperatures during the day. A concrete shell serves as a thermal mass during the day, sheilding the main auditorium from the desert’s harsh sun. Operable slitted openings at the shell’s ceiling allow for hot air to circulate out of the building. The main reading room and book stacks sit below the ground, where the earth serves as a heat sink creatin a controlled and quiet environment in the library stacks.

Sara Ousman, Fabian Llonch This projects aims to redesign the lobby of Aaron Davis Hall.

The masonry building holds three theatres with additional studio and gallery spaces and is located on the south campus of the City Collge of New York. Adjacent to the site are the Spitzer School of Architecture and Harlem Stage, a landmark performing arts theatre. The lobby entrance lies at the base of a slight hill and faces north-west towards Convent Avenue.

Large trusses and light filtering screens wrap around the entrance to the lobby forming the facade. The screens are dense beginning on the western facade to filter harsh sunlight in the mornings and gradually become less dense across the northern facade to allow in soft sunlight during the afternoons.

Aaron Davis Hall is made mostly of stacked, orthogonal volumes of masonry, light grey representing the existing building. Our proposal lies perpendicular to the main axis of the building and stretches towards City College’s main path. There are two main entrances, one serving the public and the other serving the students.

Ysabelle Gamoso, Fabian Llonch This project aims to redesign a small church fallen into disuse, located in El Raval, Barcelona, Spain. The building is flanked by a long plaza lined with orange trees. Across the street, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art sits on a larger and bustling plaza filled with skateboarders, dancers, and bycyclists performing and practicing tricks. The area is characterized by its vibrancy, street art, galleries, and laid back atmpsphere.

The plaza directly flanking the church exists in contrast to its loud and busy surroundings, fullfilling an important niche for the area, a quiet green space for those looking to escape the bustle. In order to preserve this atmosphere, the street facing facade of the church is kept minimal and nearly the same except for a small cutout across the facade denoting further activity within. The facade facing the plaza within is bare and open to people among the orange trees.

Activities happening within the church can be viewed from this plaza and the space is transformed into a reacreational arts and cultural center for the public to utlize.

Rozina Rodonic, Nedjine Dorcely, Ahu Aydogan This project aims to create a modular green wall system that could potentially act as an air filter, improving indoor air quality.

Mult-sized planters allow for a variety of different sized plants to be contained in them. Each planter contains a watering chamber and light strips to maintain the plant. Planters can also be removed individually. Air flow analysis was conducted to understand how air would flow through each planter. Planters can be used as individual units or with several units to create a larger wall.

CURRENT MODEL Current models come in different sizes to accomodate a variety of plants. Each module has a water chamber and light strip attached to its frame. The frame is the modules structural component containing all components necessary to nourish a plant including its soil.

PLANT WATERING SYSTEM Water flows throught the main water tanks and fills smaller water chambers attached to each module. Through a wick drip system the plants are kept watered.

The frame of the module is made from a durable plastic. The held within which contains the plant is made up of several layers of mesh and fabric. A cork backing aborbs excess water .
