REACHING LIGHT Design Studio - Semester 5

This aim for this project is to redesign the lobby of Aaron Davis Hall, a theatre building apart of the larger campus of the City College of New York. It is a brick masonry building located south of the campus and lies adjacent to the Spitzer School of Architecture and Harlem Stage in West Harlem in Manhattan.

The building is oriented at the bottom of a slight hill, facing towards north west towards Convent Avenue.

A skin of steel beams wraps around the the north west facade of the building, increasing in density reacting to harsh western light.

Aaron Davis Hall, without it’s lobby space is essentially made up of several stacked and orthogonal volumes of masonry. This design intersects this grid in order to create a larger connection to the rest of City College by creating a visual push towards the main spine of the campus. As a student or vistor approaches the building from this main road, they are greeted by an entrance as well as the the building’s three “fingers” stretching out onto the lawn.

The skin is supported by three long steel trusses, starting from the west side of the building and stretching to the east splitting into three separate trusses at different lengths. The screens or skin of the facade are created with slimmer metal mullions attatched to the main structure. z

POROUS CITY Design Studio - Semester 3

A MANIFESTO and conceptual group project for the rethinking of the development of Manhattan before the implementation of the 1811 Comissioner’s Plan. This project reclaims Manhattan’s former identity as “Manahatta” or “the Island of Hills” and makes use of its original hilly geography, exploring ideas of urban planning, sustainability, and historicsim.

A. AKRON & THE GRID

1. Nodes of interest will be dispersed throughout the city according to the different typologies in the geography of the island.

These will create larger districts as well as smaller micro neigborhoods within.

2. Public transportation and main highway systems will occur along the connections of these nodes are where.

3. Most of the original streets created before the 1811 plan will be kept.

4. A larger overall orthogonal grid system will be implemented to maintain order and make it easier for city goers to traverse the city. However within the larger grid, the organization of lots/blocks will be organized according to the area’s typology or special circumstance (ie. hills, rivers, wetlands, cliffs)

B. PARKS, PLAZAS, GREEN SPACES

1. Parks/Plaza will occur along flood zones and also on the northern sides of certain hills.

2. Parks and Plazas will be arranged in an interconnected network and within walking distance of every neighborhood to be easily accessble to all.

3. This system will also occur in elevation as well.

C. PROGRAM & ZONING

1. Buildings along the coast will be built generally lower than buildings towards the center of the city.

2. Topography of the buildings will unjulate gradually building up, preventing large skyscrapers from jutting out into the sky.

3. Each larger node will have mixed uses blending institutional, residential, cultural and industrial with pedestrian connections accordin to each node’s typology.

D. URBAN ECOLOGY AND TOPGRAPHY

1. Infrastructure, Parks will occur along the topography of the Island as not to demolish original landscape and habitats.

2. Rainwater collection system will be integrated throughout the larger system of the island, involving sloped roofs of buildings according to the topography, so that water can be collected naturally and with little energy towards lower elevations.

Here, water will be cleaned and re-distributed within the area.

3. Similarly, a waste collection system will be integrated throughout.

Original rivers and bodies are presrved and utilized in their respective neighborhoods.

ROADWAYS

The edges of the island are utilized as park space, to reduce damage to the city during floods.

Docks line the coast which allow for another method of transportation as well as more straighforward manner of delivering goods.

Nodes are creating according “express” and “local” walking distances, to ensure overlapping of neigborhood centers to create larger neighborhoods and also micro neighborhoods. In this neighborhood, they are located on hills.

Connected and elevated green paths overlap the the street level grid, creating a vertical city with mutiple layers.

Different portions of the island make use of a different grid system according to it’s geographical typology. This are is categorized by it’s hilly topography and close proximity to the coast.

These series of models and diagrams shows the possible forms a building can take within our block. They also represent the different uses which can occur within the buildings of our block. Yellow represents public area, blue represent residential areas, while red represents commercial areas. Commercial happens mostly within the interior of the block, bringing life within the interior.

Roofs are covered by green roofs. The yellow color represents the circulation of people from the block, into the building, and onto the elevated paths.

1:64 MODEL

This model shows our block typology.

The block borders a river and is also located very closely to the coast line. The dark line represents the tram which runs through our block. Above groud pedestrian paths connect buildings and green streets within the interior.

1:32 MODEL

This models zooms into the area of our block that meets the river. Gravel roads in this zone help the area to act as a buffer zone, allowing water to penetrate the ground and filter back into the river.

In this specific building, water is collected at a series of points throughout. This water would be recycled to flush toilets and water vegetations on the roof and walls. Excess water is drained into the gravel streets to be filtered back into the river. The roof is also accessible by the public. The yellow path represents the predestrian’s path from the street to the public space of the roof. The open shaft not only allows space for vertical circulation, but also for light to penetrate deeper within
