RESEARCH

The o rginal topic o f the research I p roduced i n response to Studio Brief 1 was beer, having researched into a vast array of visual and written research in relation t o this t opic I decided t o narrow m y research down to ‘Beer Culture’. The focus of my research therefore became festivities such as beer festivals like Oktoberfest, bar crawls and themed b ierkellers w hich c elebrated beer, i t’s history and it’s culture. I also thought about the british pub experience as what we associate with it.

DESIGN DECISIONS

STOCK

TYPEFACE

BINDING TECHNIQUE

Gill Sans, Light 11pt For the net of my publication I decided to use a brown paper stock with visible grain which is commonly used for wrapping parcels etc. I chose this stock as I felt it would be slightly more unusual than a standard white or antique stock and would give a rustic feel which would be appropriate for the subject of my research publication. In o rder t o compliment t he b rown p arcel paper stock I h ad chosen for the net of my publication, I chose a simple off white stock for the cards. In order to convey the high-end feel of the 'Wallpaper g uides' which I looked a t in t he r esearch stage I chose card rather than paper for this stock.

I personally felt that the design aesthetic I had chosen for the net lent itself to a hand-rendered style, Therefore I used a fine liner to illustrate the front cover of my publication, designing a custom typeface myself taking inspiration form the hand painted signs frequently seen in pubs. In order to in keep with the minimalist aesthetic of the cards I had designed I then chose a simple sans serif font, Gill Sans in the ‘light’ weight.

For my publication I wanted to create something which could would be a little more unusual and could be interacted with by the viewer whilst having a bespoke, high-end feel to it like the Wallpaper City Guide I had looked at, therefore I had the idea of creating a concertina booklet in which the eight double sided cards could would slot into pockets and could be pulled out by the audience.

For my publication I w anted t o create s omething which could would be a little more u nusual and could be i nteracted with b y the viewer w hilst having a bespoke, high-end feel to it. Therefore I have produced a concertina booklet in which the eight double-sided c ards could would slot i nto pockets a nd c ould be pulled out b y the audience. The cards include a rating of the beer related event, information a bout s aid e vent a nd p ictures which would be used like a guidebook to educate the audience on Beer Culture.
