mateoarquitectura TYPOLOGY: NEW HOSPITAL LOCATION: GIRONA, SPAIN PHASE: FINAL DESIGN COLLABORATION PERIOD: 20092011 INTENTIONS: This hospital won the competition because of the way it has been conceived from the early sketches:

PLAZA IN FRONT OF THE HOSPITAL BUILDING

The building is one of the first ones of Girona city when arriving from France, and this fact has been essential for the composition of the volume because the aim of the project was to unhide the far away views of the city while you were approaching Girona. This huge project can be explained in three volumes, separating parts of the program and construction phases. The first one, a low and extensive volume, is going through a big plaza and it helps to build up the access from the street. It faces the plaza and creates the necessary space to cover the main entrance. Thanks for the old building demolition, this new construction helps to create a frame for the far away landscape of Girona city. We find the lower volume that ends the plan complex in an “L” shape facing the road and plaza and going parallel to the river. These lower construction buildings have been created so compact but allowing the light and ventilation to come in thought several patios.

PERSPECTIVE FROM THE MAIN ROAD, TOWARDS FRANCE DIRECTION

In the interseccion between the lower volumes there is a 16-store tower looking for the dialogue between the Girona’s Cathedral tower. It stands out from the general mass to free the maximum of ground floor in order 3.02 Ús característic de l’edifici. Esquema de programa. 3.02 Ús característic 3.02 l’edifici. In this phase, we worked with the engineers to settle the basis of the construction and structural requirements that would be useful and necessary in detailing the next phase. We have worked deeply in the client’s brief and we have studied the structure design, having a wide range of different solutions. In additon, we have studied the complexity and diverse possibilities of facades and materials design depending on the technical requirements, the client’s brief, and the architectural concept and shape we wanted to maintain from the competition design.

mateoarquitectura TYPOLOGY: 104 HOUSING UNITS LOCATION: TOULOUSE, FRANCE PHASE: PRELIMINARY AND FINAL DESIGN COLLABORATION PERIOD: 20102011 INTENTIONS: Our wish to mark the beginning of the sequence of the Toulouse’s new neighbourhood with a closed block was conceived in two different planes. We can decompose the first one that faced the park into three volumes. The ones in the corners build up the Urbanism alignments, and the central volume creates a filter between the inner garden and the planned park in front of the complex and the second plane builds up a lower and more delicate final to this composition. Furthermore, we can also perceive that there is a texture contrast between these two planes such as the second one is materialized in wood and the first one is made of brick, combining the traditional brick construction from Toulouse but playing modernity with the difference in colour in higher volumes. Other aspects we took in consideration along the design process were ensuring good orientation, creating terraces or balconies in every flat, including variability in types, size and interior distributions, detailing the facades to ease the construction phase, ensuring sustainability and trying to reduce the impact of the sun panels and other type of installation facilities in the roof, designing it as the fifth facade.

mateoarquitectura TYPOLOGY: 245 HOUSING UNIT LOCATION: BAYONNE, FRANCE PHASE: PRELIMINARY AND FINAL DESIGN COLLABORATION PERIOD: 20102011 INTENTIONS: This new project Tête de Pont was designed as a new entry to the city of Bayonne.

GLASS AND ZENC FACADE

It is formed as a closed block where the programme is distributed in three different levels. 1-Basement: public parking 2-Ground floor: commercial centre. 3-First and upper floors: flats and apartments divided into two big groups, the social and normal ones, where each group has its different private entrance with separate gardens. The facade in front of the river is made of metal and wood, with two big holes that let enter the light inside the block’s garden. Furthermore, they help to create interesting visuals from the heart of the block.

ZNC FACADE

The East and South facade are covered by an acoustic glass screen, because they face an important urban thoroughfare which skin is made of coloured concrete and an exterior layer made of white serigraphic glass, that prevent the flats from the noisy outside. In the West facade (made of zinc) we placed two little towers that broke the volume and made it more interesting and help to light the interior of the block. Besides, we considered the roof as the fifth facade so we had always designed the installations rooms hidden in the upper levels and the chimneys creating a rhythm in the general composition. The flats are distributed in diverse typologies, from one to five rooms, in a level or in duplex, but always trying to be oriented towards the good views and good orientation and following the client’s brief.

TYPOLOGY: YOUTH CENTER LOCATION: BARCELONA, SPAIN PHASE: STUDIES END PROJECT DATE: 2008 INTENTIONS: Having studied the Barcelona old town’s necessities, we placed a volume that helped to create interior and exterior spaces for the dense quartier. This building was conceived as a social tool in order to help the relationship between the neighbours and moreover to give their inhabitants an useful space to create dialogue between different cultures. In urban terms, the volume was imagined near the existing building, to sew an open wound. The youth centre was created in different stages with all classes facing the good orientation and creating terraces from public to private ones. Finally, the complete integration of the surrounding alignments was found to create a complex terrace play and different uses. Besides, these exterior spaces were included in the given brief concept because they were thought as an extra value for the neighbourhood.

The facade is protected by wood to preserve the interior from the weather condition as well as break-in from a conflictive neighbourhood.
