A Note from the Artistic Director & Conductor

Welcome to the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra—and to a weekend of music celebrating heritage, memory, and the expressive power of the symphonic sound.

We begin with Silvestre Revueltas’s Janitzio, an energetic and vividly colorful orchestral work inspired by the rhythms and folk traditions of Mexico.

Bursting with vitality, sharp contrasts, and bold orchestration, Janitzio evokes the lively spirit of the island town for which it is named. From its opening moments, the music invites us to dance—leaning into crisp rhythms, striking gestures, and a raw, celebratory character. This piece reflects the warmth and richness of Latin American musical traditions, a heritage that stretches from indigenous roots through Spanish-influenced mestizo styles, into classical works by prominent Hispanic composers, and even popular pop stars of today.

We are especially delighted to welcome Olga Kern back to Annapolis, following her memorable appearance with us in 2022 performing Tchaikovsky’s sublime Piano Concerto No. 1. She returns to join us at Maryland Hall and Strathmore for Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the most cherished works in the piano repertoire.

Rachmaninoff’s music is instantly recognizable for its unforgettable melodies, emotional depth, technical brilliance, and rich orchestral textures— qualities that linger long after the final note. The concerto spans a wide emotional range, from passionate intensity to introspective longing, often reflecting the composer’s own personal struggles and triumphs. Many listeners will recognize the soaring melody of the second movement, later immortalized in Eric Carmen’s song “All By Myself”. Olga

Kern’s artistry embodies the daring expression, virtuosity, and genuine passion that define Rachmaninoff’s voice, in close and compelling dialogue with the orchestra.

The program concludes with William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony, a powerful and richly orchestrated work rooted in African American spirituals and folk melodies. Dawson masterfully weaves these themes into a sweeping symphonic form, offering a profound reflection on heritage, resilience, and collective voice.

Echoes of Heritage brings together three works that call for more than musical dexterity from our musicians— they ask for imagination, energy, and emotional honesty. These are pieces that reward deep listening, both among the performers on stage and in the stories woven into the music itself. We hope that, as you journey through this concert, you feel a genuine connection to those stories and carry meaningful memories with you when the final notes fade.

Elizabeth Richebourg Rea, in honoring the legacy of her father, Co-Founder of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, created a legacy of her own. In 2011, she donated the largest single contribution in the history of the orchestra for the 50th Anniversary Season. This generosity transformed giving by inspiring future endowments of substantial amounts in addition to pledges spanning multiple years. Her pioneering leadership has created new levels of support, enabling the ASO to expand our work on stage and in the community.

Elizabeth Rea is a fine art photographer and curator. She has curated numerous Joseph Cornell exhibitions and two Roy Lichtenstein Retrospectives. ith a vivid stage presence, dazzling technique, and passionate musicality, pianist Olga Kern captivates audiences around the globe. Her historic 2001 Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition launched her international reputation. She is the only woman in more than fifty years to do so.

Her 2025–2026 season features a return to Carnegie Hall with a solo recital. She joins the Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra and appears at the Sun Valley Music Festival

and in concert throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. She will perform both Shostakovich piano concertos with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Teatro alla Scala, and she will appear with Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Kern has performed with major American orchestras including the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Symphony, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra.

She has toured with the Royal

Ms. Kern is artistic director of the Olga Kern International Piano Competition and the director of the Kern Foundation Aspiration, and since 2017, she has been on the piano faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. She is the Connie and Marc Jacobson Director of Chamber Music at the Virginia Arts Festival. In recognition of her artistic contributions and cultural leadership, she received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2017. In 2025, she was on the jury for the Paderewski Competition in Poland, and in 2026, she will be president of the jury of the Cleveland International Youth Piano Competition.

Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. Recent seasons included performances of all four Rachmaninoff piano concertos and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a nationwide telecast with the Czech Philharmonic, and engagements with the Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, and Baltimore symphonies; Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria; Ireland’s National Symphony Orchestra; Prague Symphony Orchestra; Taipei Symphony Orchestra; Tokyo Symphony Orchestra; and a tour of South Africa.

She collaborates with designer Alex Teih and jeweler Alex Soldier, whose creations complement the artistry and charisma she brings to every performance.

osé-Luis Novo, Philip Richebourg Artistic Director Chair, is in his 21st season as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (ASO). Since his appointment in 2005, Maestro Novo has shaped the ASO with a bold artistic vision, fostering continuous growth, dynamic collaborations, and adventurous programming. His leadership has earned the orchestra widespread acclaim, including a 2008 ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award, a national broadcast on NPR’s Performance Today, and regular features on Baltimore’s WBJC classical station.

Under his baton, the ASO has collaborated with many of the world’s leading musicians, including cellists Steven Isserlis and Lynn Harrell; violinists James Ehnes, Midori, Anne Akiko Meyers, Noah BendixBalgley, Vadim Gluzman, CheeYun, and Esther

Yoo; guitarists Pepe Romero and Manuel Barrueco; and pianists Leon Fleisher, Peter Serkin, Pascal Rogé, Gabriela Montero, Olga Kern, Brian Ganz, and Jon Nakamatsu.

Milestone performances were the orchestra’s 50th Anniversary Gala Concert in 2012 with mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves and an astounding international tour to Spain in 2022.

A strong advocate for contemporary music, Maestro Novo has championed numerous premieres, including works commissioned through Embracing 21st Century Voices, a multi-year initiative with the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music.

Born in Valladolid, Spain, José-Luis Novo earned the degree of Profesor Superior de Violín with honors before receiving a Spanish Ministry of Culture scholarship to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, where he won a First Prize in violin. In 1988, he came to the U.S. as a Fulbright Scholar, completing master’s degrees at Yale University with top honors, followed by conducting studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

From 2003 to 2016, Maestro Novo was Music Director and Conductor of the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra in New York. He has guest-conducted leading orchestras across the U.S. and Europe and made a highly acclaimed debut with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra at the 2015 Thailand International Composition Festival, returning multiple times.

His operatic work includes The Bartered Bride with the late Julius Rudel, as well as productions of Britten’s Albert Herring, Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief, and Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea.

An accomplished educator, Maestro Novo has held conducting positions with the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra, University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Miami University Symphony Orchestra, and National Repertory Orchestra. He has been on the faculty of the Eastern Music Festival since 1999, and has led ensembles at institutions such as the Curtis Institute, Cleveland Institute of Music, Bard Conservatory, and Venezuela’s El Sistema.

In 2017, he helped establish the Annapolis Symphony Academy (ASA) and continues to guide its development as Director of Orchestral Activities. He led the debut of the ASA’s Orion Youth Orchestra in 2022 and, in 2025, served as resident conductor of Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra (NYO2), preparing the ensemble for performances at Carnegie Hall and on tour at the Edinburgh International Festival.

His honors include the 2010 Annie Award in Performing Arts from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, the 2008 ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award, and the 2005 Broome County Arts Council Heart of the Arts Award.

Janitzio SILVESTRE REVUELTAS Born Dec. 31, 1899, Santiago Papasquiaro Died Oct. 5, 1940, Mexico City

Silvestre Revueltas Sánchez was born in North Central Mexico; he studied violin and composition in Mexico City, continued his education in the United States, and then worked in both the U.S. and Mexico as a conductor and performer. In 1925, he collaborated with Mexican composer Carlos Chávez for the Musica Nueva concerts in Mexico City. Through Chávez’s invitation, Revueltas was appointed in 1929 to teach and conduct at the Conservatorio Nacional and appointed to the assistant conductor position of the Orquesta Sinfónica de México.

The collaboration between Chávez and Revueltas was important for both composers, who each wanted Mexican music to thrive and were interested in representing Mexico through their 15 | We Are Annapolis Symphony Orchestra

music. Yet, the two composers had had different philosophies of how this should be done. Whereas Chávez depended more on folk traditions for his inspiration, Revueltas was more interested in the urban working classes and a modernist compositional style.

This difference—and perhaps tension—is seen in the short tone poem Janitzio, first written and premiered in 1933, but then revised and completed in 1936. The original 1933 version is dedicated to Chávez (and Armando Echevarria, librarian of Orquesta Sinfónica de México), but this dedication is not present in the 1936 score; by that point, Revueltas had separated from Chávez’s organizations. Janitzio is named for an island in Lake Pátzcuaro, located in Michoacán a state along the Pacific Coast. Before colonization, Pátzcuaro was the heart of the Purépecha Empire, and Revueltas begins the piece by imitating the pirekua, a song form of the Purépecha, through the meter and the use of thirds. However, the theme is quickly interrupted by dissonant harmonies and clashing rhythms, and the piercing woodwinds quote the teasing refrain “lero, lero, candelero” (the equivalent of nana-nana-booboo). This ironic juxtaposition sonically represents Revueltas’ own discontent, perhaps with effects of exoticization and capitalism on Mexican culture, or perhaps with Chávez’s preference for only folk material to represent Mexico.

Revueltas’ sarcastic program notes, written for the 1933 premiere, speak to this irony: Janitzio is an island gently rocked by the waves of Lake Patzcuaro. Lake Patzcuaro is ugly. Romantic and sentimental visitors have beautified it with kisses and postcard music.

Not to be left out, I have also made my contribution, in an infinite desire for glory and fame. Posterity will no doubt be grateful for my efforts to promote tourism.

In contrast to the outer sections, the middle Lento espressivo section is a luscious clarinet and bassoon duet that grows to a tutti climax.

Revueltas heard this movement as “the voice of the people,” and in 1937 wrote to his wife that after writing it, he “felt exhilarated for having composed that piece.”

Sudden accented percussion jolts the piece back to the opening style, juxtaposing the folk melody with dissonance, “lero, lero” refrains, and city street vendor calls in the brass, providing a pastiche of Mexican life.

Piano Concerto №� in C minor, Op. 18 SERGEI RACHMANINOFF

Born Apr. 1 (O.S. Mar. 20), 1873, Oneg Died Mar. 28, 1943, Beverly Hills

Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff began learning piano with his mother, and when the family moved to St. Petersburg, he studied both piano and harmony at the conservatory. Instability at home contributed to Rachmaninoff failing his exams in 1885; he then attended Moscow Conservatory, studying piano with Nikolay Zverev until he lost Zverev’s support when he became more interested in composition. Rachmaninoff graduated with piano honors in 1891 and graduated with the Great Gold Medal for composition in 1892.

After a few years of successful piano compositions, the 1897 premiere of his Symphony No. 1 in D minor was disastrous, likely due to the drunken

Program Notes cont. state of the conductor, Alexander Glazunov. Rachmaninoff was severely demoralized and essentially stopped composing for the next three years.

After favorable press for his London debut in April 1899, Rachmaninoff began seeing Dr. Nikolay Dahl, who coached him and gradually restored his confidence.

While in Italy in the summer of 1900, Rachmaninoff began composing his second piano concerto. He performed the second and third movements that December, and the positive reception encouraged him to complete the concerto, adding the first movement.

Rachmaninoff premiered the full Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, dedicated to Dahl, on November 9 (O.S. October 27), 1901.

The concerto begins with pianissimo chords spanning an octave + third (ten notes) on the piano. Rachmaninoff had a famously large handspan of an octave + fifth, and the opening chords leverage that ability. As the pianist covers half the keyboard in rapid arpeggios, the strings enter with the primary theme, reminiscent of Russian orthodox chant. The piano introduces the second, majorkey theme in a higher register, and a brass chorale leads into the development. In the recapitulation, the strings play the opening theme while the soloist has a majestic “alla marcia” melody. The Adagio sostenuto second movement begins with the piano playing notated

triplets, but in groups of four rising notes that disguise the notated rhythm. When the flute and then clarinet enter with their own triplet figures, there is an illusion of a hemiola. Multiple climaxes gradually build into a cadenza, designed to showcase the soloist’s skill. Marked Allegro scherzando, the third movement is playful.

The piano enters with a run that covers nearly the entire span of the keyboard and leads into a glittering march with syncopated accents.

A slower, passionate, and modal melody provides contrast. The tutti fortississimo statement of this melody followed by rapid chords brings the piece to a stirring close.

Negro Folk Symphony WILLIAM DAWSON

Born Sep. 23, 1899, Anniston Died May 2, 1990, Montgomery

Born and raised in rural Alabama, William Dawson heard African American spirituals and folk songs from his mother and in his community. He was enthralled by a Fisk University Jubilee Singers concert, excited that the spirituals he knew from home and church were sung on stage. Dawson’s father, who was most likely born into slavery, expected his eldest child to help support the family by working.

While apprenticed to a shoemaker and working as a delivery boy, Dawson secretly saved some of his earnings and dreamed of attending the Tuskegee Institute, founded by Booker T. Washington. In September 1913 Dawson secretly left home and enrolled in the Tuskegee Institute.

After graduating in 1921, Dawson moved to Kansas City, MO, where

he gigged as a jazz trombonist, taught music, and earned a Bachelor of Music degree. He then moved to Chicago, where he performed jazz, playing with Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines, and was the music director of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

This position revived Dawson’s interest in African American folk song, and he began arranging spirituals.

In 1931, Dawson was hired by Tuskegee to “reorganize all the musical activities of the institution and to establish a School of Music [to] provide the opportunity for young Negroes to prepare themselves for a career in music and especially to stimulate the development of Negro music as a distinct contribution to American art.” The Negro Folk Symphony, composed in 1934, also follows this goal to promote African American music and musicians. Dawson’s work is similar in intent to William Grant Still’s Afro-American Symphony (premiered 1931) and Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1 in E minor (premiered 1933).

The chief theme […] is given to the first horn, first B-flat clarinet, and E-flat clarinet, with a tremolo on the higher strings. […T]he second theme, presented by the first oboe, [is] based on the Negro melody: “Oh, m’ litt’l’ soul gwine-a shine.” […]

The [second] movement [Hope in the Night] opens with three strokes from the gong, intended to suggest the Trinity, who guides forever the destiny of man. The strings, playing pizzicato, provide a monotonous background, creating the atmosphere of the humdrum life of a people whose bodies were baked by the sun and lashed with the whip for two hundred and fifty years; whose lives were proscribed before they were born.

The English horn sings a melody that describes the characteristics, hopes, and longings of a Folk held in darkness. After a climax, this division is followed by one conceived in a happier mood. The children, unmindful of the heavy cadences of despair, sing and play: but even in their world of innocence, there is a little wail, a brief note of sorrow […]

[The third] movement is based on Negro melodies. For the first time

the composer has used the melody “O lem-me shine […] shine lik’ a mornin’ star!” This theme, after being given out by the woodwinds is followed by related material […] A short episode leads into the second theme in G major, which is stated by the first oboe, and immediately taken up by the full orchestra. This is the second of the two Negro melodies used in this movement—“Hallelujah, Lord, I been down into the sea.” […] A coda is built on the two themes of the movement, and is brought to a close as the brasses exhibit in bold relief the principal theme, “O lemme shine lik’ a mornin’ star.”

For several weeks in 1952, Dawson studied and recorded local music making in Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Gold Coast (now Ghana), Dahomey (now Benin), and Nigeria. Upon his return, he substantially revised the symphony, especially the third movement; it is this version that is published and performed today.

A Legacy in Sound: The Sage Tower Mumma Chair for Principal Oboe

F

or decades, Sage Mumma’s presence shaped our community in ways both visible and transformative. Originally from Darien, Connecticut, Sage moved to Anne Arundel County with her husband Michael in the 1970s. She immediately became active in the civic and social life of her new home. She co-founded the Junior League of Annapolis and the Arnold Preservation Council, and was a Deacon of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park. Her story — one of curiosity, generosity, leadership, and deep love for music — lives on through The Sage Tower Mumma Chair for Principal Oboe at the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra,

a permanent endowed fund established by her family to honor her extraordinary commitment to sustaining live orchestral music and the artistry of our organization.

Music was a central interest throughout Sage’s life. In college she was a founding member of the Midnight Ramblers folk trio and later sang soprano with the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel Choir, the Senior Choir at Woods Church, the Encore Chorale for older Adults, and the Chorale at Willow Valley Communities, among others. Sage’s connection to symphonic music began during graduate school in Pittsburgh, when she and her then boyfriend, Michael Mumma,

attended concerts regularly while he pursued his Ph.D. in physics. The couple married, and after settling in Maryland became devoted ASO subscribers, maintaining season tickets for 39 consecutive years. Sage joined Friends of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (FASO), in 2004, serving in many leadership roles until 2016. Her ideas and generosity helped shape initiatives that remain vital components of the ASO’s fundraising strategy even today.

“Sage was a person with great ideas who was able to pass them on to a larger group and have them become wellsprings of good things for the organization,” her husband Michael reflects.

One of those ideas — musician sponsorship — fundamentally changed how donors could connect personally with the orchestra.

Sage championed the concept that individuals could financially support seats for ASO musician, thus offsetting the costs of musician salaries, while providing an opportunity to build relationships that deepened a mutual respect between the art, the artists, and listeners. The ASO Musician Sponsorship program has since grown into one of ASO’s most meaningful donor engagement opportunities.

Our community lost Sage to a terminal illness on March 1, 2024.

After her passing, Michael and their children sought a lasting way to honor her life and values. Their choice to permanently endow the

Principal Oboe Chair — currently held by longtime ASO musician Fatma Daglar — reflects Sage’s passion for artistry, innovation, and personal connection. “To create something enduring felt essential,” Michael explains. “Because we had known Fatma for many years as sponsors and friends, it felt natural to support her seat into perpetuity. Even if we did not know her, we would have wanted to endow an ASO musician, because we wanted to support the important roles that musicians play in the artistry of the orchestra.”

The Sage Tower Mumma Chair for Principal Oboe endowment is the first of its kind for the ASO; it is a perpetual fund that supports a specific chair. The endowed Principal Oboe Chair now stands as a visible and lasting tribute to ensure sustained artistic excellence that honors Sage’s remarkable legacy.

A LOVE STORY FEATURING KIMBERLY & TONY VALERIO

ome love stories begin with grand gestures. This story begins with a couch, a bowl of granola, and snail mail. But before there was an encounter in a mail room, there was a little boy with a horn in Annapolis, and a young girl who wanted to play….bagpipes.

ANNAPOLITAN MUSICIAN Tony Valerio is a true Annapolitan.

One day in fourth grade, Tony happened to be sitting on City Dock in downtown Annapolis when he met Senior Chief Musician Jim Gollmer, the principal hornist of the United States Navy Band. They hit it off immediately, talking about music, brass instruments, and the French horn. That chance meeting lit a fire in Tony that shaped the course of his life. His love for music was inspired by other teachers like Joyce North at Rolling Knolls Elementary and Tom Risher, who taught horn at Bates Middle School.

He was mentored and supported by Michael J. Svec, the music instructor, band director, and chair of the music department at Annapolis 27 | We Are Annapolis Symphony Orchestra

teachers, including her mentor Mary Louise Poor, pushed her hard. “I could bike to lessons with Mary Louise, and she became very important to me as a teacher. I wanted to impress her. I would sometimes leave her house crying after her lesson, but she was the very best teacher in the tri-state area, and I was motivated to prove to myself and to her that I could do better.”

High School. In fact, it was Mr. Svec who facilitated opportunities for Tony to perform as a teenager with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Tony is a graduate of West Virginia University (BM), where he performed in the marching band.

He returned to the area for graduate school, earning a Masters of Music from Peabody Conservatory (MM), where his path would soon intersect with his future wife, Kimberly.

FLUTIST WITH A FUTURE Far from the Chesapeake Bay, in Naperville, Illinois, a suburb outside Chicago, Kimberly Valerio grew up in a household that wasn’t especially musical. She wanted to play the bagpipes. Her parents, wisely or conveniently, claimed no one nearby taught them. The flute seemed a solid alternative, and by fifth grade, it was clear she had found her instrument.

That year, she performed a flute solo with her school’s choir. Even today, she says she can still vividly recall the moment on stage with the choir when she understood something fundamental: music wouldn’t be a hobby. It would be her future.

Kim’s father was her biggest champion. Whenever he went away on business, he would return with a musical score or recording and the simple request: “Play something for me”.

In high school, Kimberly participated in band but wasn’t very interested graduating early to make time for college auditions. She was offered a scholarship to Peabody, a college she felt instantly connected to and quickly decided to attend.

FROM THE PEABODY MAIL ROOM TO THE ASO It was at Peabody Conservatory that Tony and Kimberly’s music careers intersected, and where their love story began. Specifically, in the campus mail room. If you’ve met either of the Valerios, or if you’ve seen them together, you can imagine this unfolding like a movie.

Tony was an upperclassman with not a little swagger, commuting from Annapolis. Kim was a freshman, a

Naval Academy Band. He served for 24 years, retiring as a Navy Chief Musician in 2013. At his outdoor retirement ceremony at City Dock, Tony was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, along with letters of appreciation from President Barack Obama, Gov. Martin O’Malley, and Michael D. Stevens, the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy.

beautiful young woman passionate about her flute, and new to the East Coast. Tony’s habit was to sit in the common area downstairs, eating granola. Kim noticed. A lot. She’d find reasons to pass through—usually to pick up her mail, sometimes just hoping to catch a glimpse of Tony. Mutual friends finally stepped in to orchestrate an introduction.

Their first date came soon after. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra was scheduled to play Tchaikovsky. Dave Bakkegard,* Tony’s first teacher at Peabody, was scheduled to perform a huge solo that evening. Tony and Kimberly were both excited to attend.

Their first date was a major success, and soon grew into a love story and a life together. For these two musicians, careers unfolded alongside each other, sometimes in parallel, always in harmony.

GROWING IN HARMONY Tony graduated from Peabody first and immediately joined the United States 29 | We Are Annapolis Symphony Orchestra

Kimberly balanced auditions, teaching, and relentless practice, determined to earn her place in the industry. She performed with several prestigious regional and national orchestras, travelling often for concerts and festivals. In fact, she was in Breckenridge, Colorado when the conductor and composer Dr. Leslie B. Dunner told her about a flute opening in Annapolis.

Dunner served as the ASO’s fifth Artistic Director from 1998-2003. “I had just finished my season with the National Repertory Orchestra, and I decided that flute opening in Annapolis was all I wanted. I was fully and completely focused on earning the spot,” said Kimberly.

Serendipitously, there were at the same time two horn positions open with the ASO. Tony was called for his audition the day before Kimberly’s appointment.

She waited, hoping for his success,

focused on her own. He won. The pressure was on.

Kimberly had worked more than seven years for this exact moment in her career.

She won too! Today, Kimberly serves as the ASO Principal Flute, while Tony is the ASO 4th Horn and a member of the Annapolis Symphony Academy faculty where he serves as Director of the Aquarius Wind Ensemble.

MORE THAN A JOB Over time, performing for the ASO became more than just a job for the Valerios—it is the center of their community. A place where musicians celebrate together after concerts, where sections feel like families, where staff, donors, and artists all pull in the same direction. Tours to Spain. Galas. Duets.

Late nights at Fox’s Den downtown with other ASO musicians. Classes, rehearsals, recitals, and performances for their son, who studied viola at the Annapolis Symphony Academy.

Their marriage, their music, their family, and their shared experience with the ASO became a sound that grew. As the ASO matured and improved as an ensemble, so did Tony and Kim together.

Life has expanded far beyond the concert hall. These days, both Valerios teach and perform. Tony is a founding member of the Bayfield Brass, a local chamber ensemble with more than 30 years of performance in the region, from concerts and community events to Midnight Madness and their 25-year run at the Maryland Renaissance Festival.

Kimberly maintains a studio and teaches private lessons.

neighbors who popped in, and talked about all things Annapolis and music and the ASO, overstaying our parking meters and anxiously keeping an eye out for the West Street parking warden.

As we spoke, their faces took on a special light — a shared expression that recalls the moment they first met and the many moments since when music deepened their love.

As Kimberly and Tony approach nearly 30 years with the ASO and thirty-seven years together, they talk about the idea of someday leaving the same way they arrived—together, bowing out in the style they’ve always lived: in love, in tune, and on their own terms.

GROUP SALES We are dedicated to making your group‘s visit to the Annapolis Symphony a memorable experience.

With a group of 10 or more, receive a 15% discount on all tickets.

TICKET EXCHANGES Subscribers may exchange their tickets for the alternate performance of the same concert only. Exchanges are subject to availability.

TICKET DONATIONS Subscribers may donate tickets back to the Symphony as a tax-deductible contribution. We will mail you an acknowledgement letter for your donation.

There are no refunds and all ticket sales are final. If there are changes to the program, ticket holders will be contacted with options.
