+rooftop house+

Type: School project Prof.: F. Magendie Program: Social housing Location: Genevilliers Year: 2008

+housing+

The aim of this bachelor studio project was to experiment the links between housing, the urban matter and the city, while controlling the space relations between the public and the private. First the group was to think an urban plan, and then each student had to work on a plot and discuss the relations with its closed neighbors and the context. The project takes place in the closed suburbs of Paris, in the city of Gennevilliers, on a site that was in the past a cemetery. Paradoxically, the site is right in the center of the city, but surrounded with a heterogeneous context, in which various housing typologies, from the private house to the building, and not far important public facilities, like the city hall and a middle school. Each plot is 12m on 36m, and the exercise was to design two forms of housing: on the street, a small building of 3+1 floors, in which two duplex on the last floors; 2 private houses in the background.

+housing+

During my first internship, in Switzerland, I worked on a restructuration of a semi-basement in a traditional house in Lausanne. The client wanted to modify this floor to create a separated studio for her daughter, with all the commodities of an apartment: kitchen, bathroom. The space should have been easy to transform as the client wanted to use it also as a working room for its work as a masseuse. Since the project was of this small scale, I realized all of it, from the measures on site to drawing the existent and the project. A multifunctional piece of furniture was imagined, to be closer to what the client wanted and to gain space. The existing windows are enlarges to get more natural light in this semi-basement and the exterior door is surmounted of a glass surface.

+micro urbanity+

Type: Competition Office: 2A+P/A Client: AAA - Architetti Cercasi Program: 19500m2 housing Location: Milan, Italy Year: 2010

This open competition, on which I worked while I was doing my master’s internship in Rome, was specific for under 35 architects. The site is in the peri-urban area of Milan, named Cascina Merlata. This area is considered as strategic in the urban development of Milan, in the northwest part, is today one of the sites thought to receive the Expo 2015; it is linked to the Milan-Turin highway. On the 10500 square meters plot, are requested 19500 square meters SHOB housing, plus facilities for the neighborhood and the inhabitants. The first part of the project was the form and typological research of the buildings on the plot. With the help of study models, we developed three typologies: the yard, the tower and the microurbanity. After several meetings with the team and the collaborators (tAg and T-Spoon), we decided to develop the micro-urbanity, to create at the plot scale a true piece of city, with its paths, its squares, its courses and its green areas.

+urban block+

+housing+

Type: Competition Office: 2A+P/A Client: A101 Urban Block Program: Housing Location: Moscow, Russia Year: 2010

A101 urban block is an open competition of ideas for the urban blocks of a new city of 150 000 inhabitants and 13 millons square meters near Moscow. The Netherlands studio MaxWan elaborated the urban plan. The result of the competition is not only a winner, but also a catalogue of different propositions that can be applied on the diverse sites and phases of the A101 project. The chosen typology is the yard, modeled to optimize the light and protect against north winds. The building is composed of two parts in L shape and various heights; linked together to form a block characterized by distributive voids and common spaces voids. Various boxes distinct by height and color are inserted staggered on slabs, and between the volumes, private and public are confronted: common terraces and winter gardens are the public spaces where people can meet, while private terraces are open spaces and protected, natural extensions of the apartments.

+the snake and the Seine+

Type: Closed competition Office: Beckmann N’Thépé Client: Nexity Program: Housing Location: Boulogne-Billancourt, France Year: 2011

+housing+

The AA plot, part of the vast project in Boulogne-Billancourt, a city adjacent to Paris, presents as many advantages than constraints in an urban point of view. First of all, its location: at the extremity of the Lefaucheux street, it is the entry of the ZAC (Mixed Development Zone) from the bank. Its situation gives it exceptional views on the Seine, the island of Billancourt facing it and the new urban park structuring the Billancourt bank. However, its north-south orientation and its triangular morphology are constraining the back of this land in a difficult situation to apprehend. Furthermore, the density and the high heights inquired by the program strongly direct the implantation of the principal building on the widest side, along the principal axis. Everything, thus, guides us to install a “bar” aligned with the buildings already designed on the Lefaucheux street, forgetting about the building in the background on the Traversière street and the central garden, which leaves them without view and without light. While this configuration is possible, it does not give an equal life comfort for the future inhabitants; the choice of the financial discrimination takes in that case over and becomes visible… The idea oh the project is consequently to push and string the center of the volume on the Lefaucheux street towards de center of the plot. This configuration allows in that way to open the heart of the central garden to the exterior, linking it to the new urban park. Doing so, light and views are given to a maximum of apartments, and a real landscape contextual continuity is created. The whole is less constrained but still keeps a general coherence. Finally, this rupture allows to affirm the required verticality: the building in the angle is clearly detached from the rest of the volume and becomes thus the third masterpiece of the Trapeze.

+white bricks+

Type: Closed competition Office: Bang Architectes Client: Paris-Habitat Program: Housing (16 apartments) Location: rue de Candie, Paris 11, France Year: 2012 Status: 1st prize

+housing+

The neighborhood in which the project takes place, typical of the “faubourgsâ€?, is characterized by the presence of numerous passages oriented perpendicularly at the Saint-Antoine street; the passage Saint-Bernard is along the operation site. The heterogeneity of the context is another characteristic; the heights and types of building are various, even if a majority of these buildings are of intermediary scale. The plot for this operation is noticeable because it is situated at the angle of three streets. Its position as a boat bow ends a typical plot of the faubourg Saint-Antoine, a long plot with court and backcourt system. The directions of the plot are going to be the matrix for the general volume of the building. These directions are also the ones of the passages near, and of the plot on the other side of the rue Candie, which includes a gymnasium and housing, designed by architect Massimiliano Fuksas. The project integrates itself in the existing urban fabric. The existing buildings in the limits of property give separative walls that we estimate to be the ideal points to hang the project if we want to articulate it to the context. The proposed volume is echoing the various scales characterizing the surrounding urban fabric. By this height variation the angle Saint-Bernard/Candie is more dynamic. This work on the continuity of the voids and the built following the directions presented before allows to write the project in its context. Furthermore, the low height of the building in the backcourt allows the opening of the perspective: the situation is improved for the inhabitants of the 161 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine. The separative wall is treated as the prolongation of the existing patio. This planting of the south façade, realized with deciduous plants, will brighten in winter and will allow the white bricks wall to reflect the light towards the habitations of the 163, north oriented.

+an ordinary district+

Type: Urban planning Prof.: P.Simon Program: Housing, shops Location: Saint-Denis, France Year: 2008-2009

+city+

The Plaine Saint-Denis is a historical industrial neighborhood, which develops around the Canal Saint-Denis, in the north periphery of Paris. Its original urban fabric is composed of wide streets along the axis north south. The historical center of the city is on the other side of the canal, with the famous gothic SaintDenis cathedral, one of the strongest forms of the gothic style in France and in which were buried kings of France. Saint-Denis is also the city of the Stade de France, inaugurated in 1998. The project begins from a hypothesis of destruction of a part of the city. The exercise was to analyze the existing urban fabric and propose a reconstruction enlighten of the memory of the place, the contemporary needs for a city and the forces of the context. The analysis of the neighborhood shows three centralities: the historic center of Saint-Denis and its cathedral, the Stade de France and the center of Aubervilliers, the adjacent city. The new district must be consequently “non-centralâ€? but ordinary, district of housing and facilities. The public space would be develop non only on the ground, but also on the rooftops, inside, in the basements, in-between, etc‌ a park edified on the ruins of an industrial fabric would be dedicated to the industrial memory of the place. The urban fabric would be tighten to give a more human scale at the neighborhood.

+crossing paths+

Type: Urban planning and reconversion Prof.: P.Simon With: A. Meillère Program: Housing, shops, facilities Location: Bucharest, Romania Year: 2012

+city+

Rahova is a district situated close to the center of Bucharest. We face a subject of a porous and paradoxically landlocked part of the city. The project is situated on a plot of railway warehouses. Numerous empty spaces are forgotten in various barriers: economic barrier and physical barrier (walls between the various lots, closed wall encircling the warehouses, urban highways: boulevard Tudor Vladimirescu, Calea Rahovei, future way Uranus in project). How to give a new porosity at the district? How to redefine grounds and limits? The first step would be to reunite the whole lot, today separated in numerous privatizations, which tend to impair its genius loci: the sad rehabilitation of one of the central halls into a ball reception is an example of this privatization. To reunite the plot, the answer will be multiple functionalities brought together around a common theme. Therefore, at the already existing building The Ark, rehabilitated in 2007 by Romanian architect Mario Kuibus (a cluster for young creative enterprises and occasional concert hall), are associated outside theaters, library, primary school, housing for artists and locals for associations. The study was also pointed on the vast free plot, left abandoned, at the south of the site. This gigantic wasteland was created by the Ceausescu’s destructions; it is now left in this state and didn’t receive, as in the close neighborhood, the enormous housing buildings that are along the wide avenues in the center. The project proposed to divide this plot in a succession of long and narrow plots similar as the historic urban fabric of Bucharest. Paths perpendicular to the main avenue are created, toward the center of the general plot, and so in the heart of the project and the facilities, which are organized along another axis around the project.

Type: Cultural Prof.: B.Decaris Program: lyric opera house Location: Le Palais, Belle-テ四e-en-Mer, Fr Year: 2009

+facilities+

The microcosm of an island leads to an amplification of the problems in the land. The island has indeed 4000 inhabitants during the year; during summer, this number increase to 40000. The Vauban citadel in the principal city Le Palais is a world patrimony. This exceptional site is not really valorized today. How to conserve the citadel and create a new attraction to it? One of the possibility is to occupy and reinvest it to make the public attracted to the citadel and that they visit it in an indirect way. A lyric music festival takes place every summer in the citadel arsenal for two months. The actual concert room has a mediocre acoustic and only a few seats. During the year, there are a lot of business seminaries, and musical master classes. The project creates a lyric opera that can also accommodate the annual seminaries and master classes: the building creates new paths into the landscape on the south part, in front of the small city of Le Palais.

The Arenella faubourg is located on the north coast of Palermo, between two iconic symbols of the city: the sea and the mount Pellegrino. The project of rehabilitation is the entrance building of the chemical factory, made of a long part, an entrance for vehicles and a square small building for the keeper. We had to draw all the degradations of all the faรงades, and then determine their origin and propose a method of rehabilitation adapted. Only then should we propose a program for a public use of the building: a cultural centre and locals for young enterprises. The rehabilitation in Italy is a precise work, which needs a vast number of structural and physical knowledge. The work in the studio was associated with a theoretical course.

This project for a clothes shop is located in the center of Rome. When I arrived at the office, I worked the first days on the beginning of the project. I was to imagine the intern organization of the shop, to think the furniture while preserving the small amount of space in this local. I designed the furniture on a Cad program, and then I modelized the space to easy up the meetings with the client. Three months later, between two competitions, I worked a second time on this project, which was then in phase K (construction), and I worked on the electric plans. I learned about the symbolic representation of electricity. The construction finished after my departure: the team sent me the photos of the final realized project and I could appreciate the passage from the design to reality.

This project wants to work on the farming culture to allow a strong and attractive identity of the valley. How to put together a structure which associates the communication of the knowledge and the doing in a ageing valley and not strongly attractive? The idea is to implant a center of agricultural formation, which teaches the traditional agricultural techniques, the agropastoralism, and a lost knowledge, the fruits and vegetables growing. A center of agricultural formation asks about the teaching: who has the knowledge in the valley? Farmers, of course, but also the elderly. The idea is to recreate the traditional “farm with three generations, where the knowledge is shared around conviviality. The project creates a social diversity in a place of sharing between the generations. Following the example of the Vorarlberg, this complex put together various uses to create an interaction with the context.

The double orientation of the project is the expression of the double program: a dance studio for the Zahrbat company on one side and a media library. This double program is accompanied by a hall, which can have various uses and can be open either on the library, either on the dance studio or independently. This hall has its own scale, like a small amphitheater. The library expends on the east side, towards the middle school and long the historical axis. The library is conceived as a third place. It is a space of intermediary conviviality. Accessible to all, the space is made for informal exchanges and makes possible the interaction between people. It is an open space, comfortable, a proximity facility in immediate relation to the public space. On the west side, the dance studio takes height, and stays along the network of the district. The 5 meters height under the roof allows a structure for light effects.

+stage design+

A pure form, the triangle, carries the entire scenic machine. The assembly of triangles change form during the representation. The triangles are made of white fabric, tense on tubular metallic structure. They are themselves hang to a wider metallic structure which manages the whole scenic design. First act: MPalermu The triangulated structure creates a box, a closed space, to represent the idea of the house from which no one can escape. At the same time, the narrow space between the triangle light up the scene of luminous rays, leaving notice of the world outside: this world where the characters would dream of going. At the end of the first act, unnoticedly, the granny dies: this is when the box breaks, and all the triangles separate. Second act: Carnezzeria The act starts in a tense atmosphere, which announces the following of the play: an arranged marriage which ends in a scene of torture and incestuous violations. At the end of the act, the structure trembles and the triangles fall down as young Nina dies. Third act: Vita Mia The third act is a world of crazy sadness; reflect of the state of mind of a mother who just lost his three sons. All the triangles are down, the space of the stage becomes the representation of despair and paranoia. It is a space without beginning, without end, only triangles dispatched in all directions, some verticals behind which the sons, like shadows, appear and disappear, emphasizing their inconsistency.

+reading Pasolini in a territory of inversed ruins+

Type: PFE Prof.: F.Magendie/L.Merlini Program: School, library, columbarium Location: Palermo, Italy Year: 2013

+thesis+

The final project, which allows the student to pretend to the architectural diploma, is a moment in which it is possible to synthesize the knowledge acquired during the school career and the personal career. Both these career paths have meet in Italy, which was the frame of my theoretical thesis: I studied the impact of the images of the modernity of the peri-urban territories in the sixties. This study developed itself around two pieces of Italian cinema, l’Eclipse, from Antonioni and Mamma Roma, from Pasolini. The discovery of the work of Pasolini, non only cinematographic, but also literary, has been of a strong impact on me: I found the matter of my final thesis. To this work adds up the one on the ruins as possibility of project: ruins which marks the Sicilian territory, and more particularly the city of Palermo. Palermo is by essence city of the possible and city of incompletion at the same time; Pizzo Sella, or the inversed ruins, the incomplete construction site, is at the fringes of the city, where the island stops. “Ruin (…) is time out of history; a landscape, a mix of nature and culture which loses itself into the past and goes out in the present as a sign without signifié, without other signifié than the feeling of the time passing and during at the same time.” Palermo is part of these city in which normality is not found. Imperfections, violences of every kind, anomalies, disembowelments, fallows, ruins, false reconstructions, the public space all the time in danger. But this same incompletion or abandon is to be somehow the normality of Palermo, becoming a touristic curiosity and finishing to contaminate its inhabitants who makes of the worst a living way: “the order of disorder”, as says Fabrizio Maccaglia. When yesterday everything was thought as a disaster, today this has become publicity – form of collective distraction of the history splits. In Palermo, history and fiction are living together as a Golem. The Golem, as meant in its Hebraic sense, indicates an incomplete state of the human creation. This particular state of incompletion marks the city from its beginnings. Nothing is ever concluded. This is why it is impossible to figure itself a linear history, but many different and paradigmatic stories, sometimes traces, paths, parts. This city is every time redesigned, but every time erased toward an unexpected future.

tries to conserve the fragile life that remains on its in-betweens.

+urban development

These fragments are precisely this ‘sensorial perception’ as defined by Walter Benjamin, which means these atoms of histoire and memory of the past that we recognized only as hieroglyphs because they are out of the lost context in which they once found their signification. With the word of the anthropologist Marc Augé, we can say that Palermo is ‘a promise of ruin’, where what is born seems destined to be an inexorably already there. The ‘ruin’ is not a negative or degenerative fact, because it represents the incompletion triumph and it recalls a possibility of completion. ‘The assassinated architecture’, unique drawing of Aldo Rossi, represents fragments of its architectures put down in a deconstructive chaos. In this drawing of ruin and fragmentation, Peter Eisenmann reads a “possibility of architecture” because the architecture survives, wounded and confused, but it is not yet dead. The ruin as object and form, place and history, but without function becomes the beginning of invention: the place of possibility.

+visible spectrum

Pizzo Sella’s case is referring to a phenomenon linked to the sadly criminal story of Palermo and Sicily. They are not public constructions, as in the example of the research group ‘Incompiuto Siciliano’ which reference the different incomplete constructions throughout the Italian territory, but they are private houses, abusive villas, which construction was stopped. These ruins of the present, that we are looking to overcome for their shameful past, are in this project a place to experiment architecturally, and to think about their preservation or not, in a special site. The Pizzo Sella’s ruins are inversed ruins, anti-ruins because they exist from the beginning as uncompleted objects. This peri-urban territory, and peri-legal, between legality and inequality, is similar to the peri-urban territories in mutation in the sixties in Italy territories covered and told by Pasolini, in its cinematographic production, first of all, but also in its literary production that marks the beginning of its carrier and its first years of its exile in Rome. Exiled, new, he tells throughout its poem ‘Il pianto della scavatrice” the territory that he covers. The objective of this thesis is to demonstrate that fiction can be a methodological tool that can tell the architecture while connecting to an existing context that brings up all the questions inherent to it.

OURU

NCE
