MOHOLOHOLO REHAB CENTRE
HIGHLIGHTS
Situated in the shadow of the majestic “ Mariepskop” which forms part of the mighty Drakensberg mountains, our unique Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is a home to many of South Africa’s abandoned, injured and poisoned wildlife. Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is extremely proud of its efforts in wildlife education in South Africa. At Moholoholo we are often faced with the difficult decision of what to do with an injured or poisoned animal which will not be able to be released back into the wild. As a result, we have a number of “permanent residents” at the centre and at our own cost we use them as “ambassadors” for their respective species. Members of the public are therefore able to get an up close and personal experience of these incredible creatures and with our hands on approach we have the ability to demonstrate to the public the threats and problems our wildlife is facing today. The Centre has a long standing and successful Serval Breeding Project and more than 160 have successfully been reintroduced to areas where they have become extinct. We are actively involved in research on the movement and behaviour of leopards and also on a number of vulture species that we monitor daily at our “vulture restaurant”. A visit to the Centre is “an experience of a lifetime” and will leave you with lasting memories.
HOEDSPRUIT ENDANGERED SPECIES CENTRE
HIGHLIGHTS
The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) is living proof that people can make a difference to the long-term survival of the planet and its animal inhabitants. HESC focuses on the conservation of rare, vulnerable and endangered animal species. Cheetah Conservation is one of its core disciplines. The centre is actively involved in research; breeding of endangered animal species; the education of learners, students and the general public in conservation and conservation-related activities; tourism; the release and establishment of captive-bred cheetahs in the wild; the treatment and rehabilitation of wild animals in need (including poached rhinos); and anti-poaching initiatives on the reserve. Following an introductory presentation, we will embark on an in-depth tour of the centre in open safari vehicles with experienced guides. HESC houses a number of animal species like cheetah, African wild dog, lion, African wild cat, Ground hornbill, Sable antelope and more. We can view the resident animals in close proximity, in a habitat simulating what they would experience in the wild. Also we are afforded the opportunity of watching rare African vultures feeding at the Vulture Restaurant.
KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
HIGHLIGHTS
Kruger National Park is South Africa's most exciting African safari destination. Steeped in legend and history, the iconic Kruger National Park in South Africa is waiting for you to explore its vast landscapes and spectacular African wildlife. We are staying at Skukuza. The camp is situated close to the confluence of the Sabie, N'waswitshaka and Sand Rivers and is in a particularly game-rich part of Kruger. The thorn thickets and mixed woodlands around the camp usually host animal activity all year round as the Sabie is a major source of water in the southern Park. A survey done in 1970 revealed that 25 leopards lived in a five-kilometre radius of Skukuza camp. A relaxing way to acclimatise to Skukuza is to spend half-an-hour ambling along the tree-lined walkway along the edge of the camp overlooking the reedbeds and sandbanks of the Sabie River. There is often game flitting through the mixed riverine woodland on the banks, and elephant and buffalo regularly come down to the river to drink in front of the camp.
PANORAMA ROUTE
HIGHLIGHTS
The Panorama Route is one of the country’s most scenic self-drives. The route explores the Mpumalanga highlands, or the north-eastern section of the Great Escarpment of the Drakensberg. In these rugged mountains the plateau comes to an abrupt and dramatic halt, falling steeply away into the Lowveld accompanied by incredible views out over the grasslands of Africa. The route is centred around the Blyde River Canyon, the world’s third largest canyon, and features numerous waterfalls, one of the largest afforested areas in South Africa, and several natural landmarks. Visitors describe the natural attractions as being able to ‘touch the clouds’ and call the route the ‘most beautiful place in the world’. Highlights of the Panorama Route are God's Window, Pinnacle, Blyde River Canyon, Bourke's Potholes, Three Rondavels, many waterfalls, Pilgrim's Rest.
JESSICA THE HIPPO & BAOBAB TREE
HIGHLIGHTS
We will visit Jessica, a 10 year old female Hippopotamus. Hippos are considered as to be the most dangerous animals in Africa. There are many reports of Hippos attacking (and killing) people and other animals. What makes Jessica so special and unique, is the fact that she is a wild animal that interacts with humans in a rather different way than nature has intended. She has become a worldwide celebrity ans she has her own fanclub. You can experience this for yourself; you can feed, touch and even kiss Jessica! After we have visited Jessica we will have lunch near a Baobab tree in the area. Africa is symbolised by these magnificent trees. These monster trees with their swollen, gnarled bodies and incongruous branches that look more like roots than arms are also known as ‘elephant trees’, ‘big trees’ or ‘upside down trees’. Their lifespan is great and there are specimens in South Africa as old as 3000 years. We love them and animals love them too – elephants strip the bark for food and moisture, baboons eat the fruit (also known as ‘monkey bread’ or ‘cream of tartar fruit’), whilst birds and bees, fruit bats and bush babies love to nest in them.
