COLLABORATION WITH CARICOM Guyana Animation Network (GAN) Inc. facilitated an Animation Workshop on Saturday, 23 November 2019 for 13 young students from the Sophia Care Centre as part of CARICOM Secretariat’s annual Staff Talent Celebration 2019.
From that workshop, the Staff Talent Planning Committee of the Secretariat, together with two staff members committed to sponsoring the top three students to attend GAN’s 2020 Digital Summer Camp. GAN later announced sponsorship of 10 additional children and 2 teachers from the Sophia Care Centre through a grant received.
The children participated in Cohort 2 of the GAN Summer Camp held during the period 17-24 August, 2020. However, training for the children from the Centre was
extended up to October 8, 2020. They participated in the 2D Animation and Design & Prototyping courses.
To equip the children for the training, the CARICOM Secretariat donated six computer systems to the Sophia Care Centre. GAN also loaned the center 5 tablets to assist in accessing training.

SUCCESS FACTORS Addressing the Digital Divide Many children and youth in Guyana do not have access to devices and/or the internet to obtain digital skills or continue participate in virtual programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. To address this issue, GAN allotted more than 50% of grant funds to provide virtual training to at risk children and youth in underserved communities.
Creativity During the Pandemic The children of the Sophia Care Centre were able to develop their digital creative skills through the opportunities and resources provided by the Centre, GAN and CARICOM during the COVID-19 pandemic despite restrictions for face-to-face interactions.
Programming Resources GAN, through a grant opportunity, was able to procure 10 tablets to loan to the centre for the children to have additional access to the virtual training and ease in internet connectivity. The children also now have continued access to and use of the 2D animation software which were installed on the computers donated by the Secretariat to the Sophia Care Centre.
