FESTIVAL KAKAV ŽELIMO ILI KONCEPT 4 i THE FESTIVAL AS WE WANT IT OR THE ’4 Is’ CONCEPT Od trenutka rađanja ideje o međunarodnom festivalu animacije u Čačku, njen sastavni deo bila je i re{enost da festival ne bude tek jo{ jedan sezonski kulturni događaj u gradu. Želeli smo vi{e. Želeli smo da postane mesto susreta ljudi i ideja, mesto na kome bi zaljubljenici u animirani film mogli da podele svoju strast ,uživajući u svemu {to jedan ovakav festival može da pruži: takmičarski program filmova iz celog sveta, retrospektive poznatih reditelja, tematske revije, predstavljanje autora i njihovog rada, upoznavanje sa novim projektima studija za animaciju, izložbe vezane za animaciju, strip, nove medije... Na pragu trećeg izdanja ANIMANIME mi smo, kao organizatori, svesni da je integrativna funkcija festivala primećena od strane učesnika i saradnika, ali i od publike koja festival prepoznaje kao promotera novog koncepta zabave i edukacije. Primećujući sve vi{e mladih i informisanih ljudi u gledali{tu Velike dvorane Doma kulture koji se u digitalnom svetu savremenih medija, TV i Interneta, osećaju kao kod kuće, osećaj mi govori da na{a ideja ima perspektivu. Kao i svaka dobra ideja, i ova traži sve veći manevarski prostor, vidi se to, primera radi, i u činjenici da se broj filmova značajno povećao, time i broj takmičarskih projekcija, {to, opet, može da znači da je četvorodnevni festivalski raspored postao prilično tesan. Pravci {irenja se, dakle, naziru, ali mogućnosti jo{ treba ispitati. Jer, ANIMANIMA želi da se približi sektoru privrede, posebno u gradu u kome postoji, doprinoseći tako njegovom kulturnom „pedigreu“. Primeri iz evropske i svetske prakse neprestano nas podsećaju da biznis i kultura mogu da nađu tačke ukr{tanja sopstvenih interesa, zbog toga smo zainteresovani za sve potencijalne partnere u Čačku, ali i u okruženju. Grad Čačak i Ministarstvo kulture Republike Srbije i ove godine, uz sve napore (ne poslujemo u najsjajnija vremena, na to nas, pak, svetska ekonomska kriza podseća) podržali su festival ANIMANIMA. Bez njihovog pokroviteljstva na{a bi misija bila gotovo nemoguća. Reč kojom se najče{će opisuje ekonomska klima u narednoj godini je neizvesnost, i svesni smo toga da nas, kao uostalom i sve festivale u Srbiji očekuje puno isku{enja. Međutim, treba verovati da će nosioci pre svega ekonomske, potom i kulturne politike u Srbiji, imati mogućnosti da učine najbolje moguće za dru{tvo u celini. Zato bi na{ koncept mogao da se nazove 4I: inspiri{emo, iniciramo, inoviramo, insistiramo. Ako je imperativ preživljavanja aktuelnog trenutka, ni{ta manji je i onaj u kome treba da mislimo na budućnost. Zato i četvrto i, zato insistiramo.

From the moment when the idea of an international animation festival in Čačak was conceived, the underlying assumption was that the festival would not be just another seasonal cultural event in the city. We wanted more. We wanted it to be a meeting place for people and ideas, a venue where lovers of animated film could share their passion, enjoying everything that a festival of this kind can offer: a competition programme featuring films from all around the world, retrospectives of renowned directors, thematic reviews, presentations of authors and their work, new projects of animation studios, exhibitions dedicated to animation, commic art, new media ... At the moment when we, as the festival organisers, are embarking on the third edition of ANIMANIMA, we are well aware of the fact that its integrative role has been noticed by the festival participants and collaborators, but also by the spectators, who recognise the new event as a promotion of a new concept of entertainment and education. For me, there can be no doubt that this idea of ours has a great prospect; this is clearly indicated by the growing number of young, well-informed people gathered in the audiences in the Grand Hall of the City Cultural Centre, youngsters who feel absolutely at home in the digital world of the modern media, TV and the Internet. Like any good idea, this one will certainly require more and more space for manouvre. This can be seen, among other things, by the noticeably increased number of the films which, as a consequence, has lead to an increased number of the competition programme projections. This then will probably mean that the four days’ festival framework has become rather tight. New directions of expansion are there – however, we have yet to investigate all of the opportunites, since ANIMANIMA will want to strenghten its base in the local economy, in order to make a contribution to the ’cultural pedigree’ of its home city. There are numerous examples from the European and the global scene, showing us how business and culture can have points of mutual interest. Because of this, we are constantly looking for all the potential partners in Čačak and the wider region. The city of Čačak and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia have managed to provide support for the ANIMANIMA festival, in very difficult circumstances (of which we are constantly reminded by the global economic crises). Without the continual support of our donnors, we would be facing an almost impossible mission.The word that is typically used to predict the economic developments in the forthcoming year is uncertainty and we are fully aware of the fact that we will be facing a number of challenges, like all the other festivals in Serbia for that matter. Despite this, we must have faith in the decision makers in the Serbian economic and cultural policies, and rely on them to provide for the walfare of the society as a whole. This is why our concept could be appropriately named ’the 4 Is’ concept: Inspire, Initiate, Innovate, Insist. Given the fact that the current imperative is to survive, then we must agree that it is equally vital to think about the future that will come after. And that is where the fourth ’I’ comes in, that is why we must Insist.

SELEKCIONA KOMISIJA SELECTION COMITEE ALEKSA GAJIĆ Rođen u Beogradu 1974. Diplomirao na FPUD u klasi prof. Rastka Ćirića, kolor strip albumom “Technotise“. Od 1996. godine stalni je saradnik “Politikinog Zabavnika”. Od 2000. radi za izdavačku kuću “Soleil“ iz Francuske, i od tada je objavio {est kolor albuma (objavljenih u jo{ osam zemalja). Ilustrovao je vi{e knjiga u saradnji sa raznim izdavačima. Kao ilustrator, sarađivao je i sa brojnim časopisima i magazinima. Autor nekoliko reklamnih spotova, vi{e muzičkih video spotova, kao i čitavog niza {tampanih promotivnih materijala. Učesnik većeg broja kolektivnih izložbi, a između tri svoje samostalne izložbe, kao najznačajniju izdvaja onu iz 2005. godine u Muzeju primenjene umetnosti u Beogradu. Od 2006. do 2009. godine radio je na svom prvom dugometražnom animiranom filmu “Technotise - Edit i ja”. Sa porodicom živi trenutno u Zemunu, i radi na novim projektima. ALEKSA GAJIĆ Born in Belgrade in 1974, where he graduated from the FPUD Faculty, in the class of professor Rastko Ćirić. The graduation thesis was the full-colour comic “Technotise”. Since 1996, Aleksa Gajić has been engaged as an author working for the prestigious “Politikin Zabavnik” on a permanent contract. Since 2000, he has worked for the French publishing house “Soleil”. During this period, he has produced six full-colour comic albums, published in eight other countries. Working for various publishers, he appears as an illustrator of a number of books, and he has also collaborated with numerous newspapers and magazines. In addition to this, Aleksa’s opus includes several advertising videos and a number of music videos as well, together with a series of printed promotional designs. He has appeared in many collective exhibitions, and has had three individual exhibitions so far, the most important being the one held in 2005, in the Belgrade Museum of Applied Arts. Between 2006 and 2009, he has been involved in his first feature film – “Technotise, Edith and Me”. At the moment, he lives in Zemun with his family, working on new projects. ANICA TUCAKOV Anica Tucakov, magistar istorije umetnosti (Filozofski fakultet, Beograd) i magistar menadžmenta u oblasti vizuelnih umetnosti (New York University). Nakon profesionalnog usavr{avanja u New Yorku i radnog iskustva u Muzeju moderne umetnosti (MoMA) i aukcijskoj kući Christie’s, po povratku u Beograd radila u Muzeju savremene umetnosti, Beograd, Ministarstvu kulture, kao savetnik za menadžment u kulturi, fondaciji Balkankult. Jedan od osnivača organizacije „Anonymous said:“ u kojoj trenutno i radi. Autor, producent i kustos mnogobrojnih izložbi, među kojima se izdvaja retrospektivna izložba Mirka Ilića, dizajnera Stefana Sagmeistera, koncerata i kulturnih manifestacija. Bila je selektor vizuelnih umetnosti BELEF-a 2005. i 2006. godine, art direktor manifestacije Dani Beograda 2007. godine. Autor knjige „Strip u Srbiji 1975 – 1995. godine“. Redovni saradnik mnogih dnevnih novina i magazina. ANICA TUCAKOV Anica Tucakov, MA in History of Art (Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade) and MA in Management in Visual Arts (New York University). After completing her professional academic course in New York and having gained relevant experience during her engagement with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Christie’s auctioneers house, Anica returns to Belgrade where she works for the Museum of Modern Art and for the Ministry of Culture, as an advisor for the issues of management in culture, in the Balkankult Foundation. She is one of the co-founders of the Anonymous Said organisation, where she currently works. Anica appears as an author, producer and curator of numerous exhibitions, including the retrospective of Mirko Ilić, designer Stefan Sagmeister, as well as a number of concerts and cultural events. She was also a selector for the visual arts segment of the BELEF festival in 2005 and 2006, as well as the art director of the festival “Days of Belgrade 2007”. She is the author of the book “Comic books in Serbia 1975 – 1995”, and a regular collaborator of many daily newspapers and magazines. JOVAN GVERO Jovan Gvero rođen je 29.12.1961. godine u Kikindi. Osnivač i kourednik „Severnog bunkera“, časopisa koji je pratio i podržavao aktuelnu književnu produkciju u Srbiji i jugoistočnoj Evropi. Član udruženja za disiminaciju književnosti i umetnosti LiTkon, koja okuplja književnike sa prostora biv{e SFRJ i iz regiona. Objavio je sledeće knjige: „Noćna prepiska“, „Džepno pozori{te“ i „Profil za vodeni žig“. Gverova poeziju prevođena je u inostranstvu. Osnivač i autor u pozori{noj trupi “Nakondo teatar”, glumac u pozori{noj trupi “Kaktus”. Dugogodi{nji saradnik Kikindskog pozori{ta. Osnivač, urednik i novinar većeg broja dnevnih, nedeljnih i preiodičnih publikacija, kao i TV i radio stanica. Od 2002. do 2008. godine je direktor Studentskog kulturnog centra Novi Sad, gde kao urednik izdanja potpisuje ostvarenja Ivice Stevanovića i Zorana Penevskog, grafičke romane „Ljubazni le{evi“ i „Leksikon likovnih legija“, kao i almanah angažovanog stripa „Volvox“. Član redakcije časopisa za afirmaciju stripa „Ennea“. Živi u Novom Sadu. JOVAN GVERO Jovan Gvero was born on 29th December 1961 in Kikinda. He is the founder and co-editor of the Northern Bunker magazine, an edition that monitored and supported the current literal production in Serbia and South-east Europe. Gvero is a member of LiTkon, an association for dissemination of literature and art, gathering writers from the former SFR Yugoslavia and the region. He is the author of the books: Night Correspondence (“Noćna prepiska”), Pocket Theatre (“Džepno pozori{te”) and Profile for the Watermark (“Profil za vodeni žig”). His poetry has been translated into other languages. Among other engagements, he is also the founder of and author for the theatre group Nakondo (“Nakondo teatar”) and an actor in the Cactus (“Kaktus”) theatre group. He has been a collaborator of the Theatre in Kikinda for many years and is also the founder, editor and journalist of a number of daily and weekly papers, as well as periodical journals and TV and radio stations. From 2002 to 2008 he was the manager of the Students Cultural Centre in Novi Sad, where as an editor of the of the publications he signs such projects as those realized by Ivica Stevanović and Zoran Penevski, the graphic novels Kind Corpses (“Ljubazni le{evi”) and a Lexicon of Painting Legions (“Leksikon likovnih legija”) and the almanac of the Volvox comic book. Gvero is a member of the magazine for the promotion of the comic book art called Ennea. He lives in Novi Sad.

ŽIRI JURY RASTKO ĆIRIĆ Srbija Rođen 1955. u Beogradu. Diplomirao je i zavr{io poslediplomske studije na Fakultetu primenjenih umetnosti u Beogradu. Član ASIFA, ULUPUDS-a, YU Art Director Club-a, sekretar Ekslibris dru{tva Beograd. Redovni profesor na FPU za predmet Ilustracija i profesor Animacije u Filmskoj {koli Dunav filma. Osnivač predmeta Animacija i Studija za animaciju FPU na Fakultetu primenjenih umetnosti (2006). Rukovodilac Grupe za digitalnu umetnost na Interdisciplinarnim studijama Univerziteta umetnosti u Beogradu (od 2005). Rastko je autor 14 animiranih filmova među kojima su i “Tango Ragtime” (1985) “Lalilonska kula” (1988), “Ale i bauci” (1989), “Nevidljive i slabo vidljive životinjske vrste” (1988), “Metamorf” (2005); “Fantasmagorie 2008” (2008), i nagrađivan je na mnogim međunarodnim festivalima (Minhen, Hiro{ima, Zagreb, Otava, Moskva, Beograd Kijev…). Autor je i nekoliko knjiga ilustracija, predavanja, tekstova o ekslibrisu, a bio je i saradnik-ilustrator Njujork Tajmsa. Godine 2004. Dinko Tucaković režira dugometražni dokumentarni film “The Rubber Soul Project”, posvećen Rastkovom muzičkom projektu. CD sa muzikom i DVD izdat je 2006. u SAD (Allegro Music). RASTKO ĆIRIĆ Serbia Rastko Ćirić was born in 1955. in Belgrade, Serbia. Graduated and finished Third Degree studies from the Faculty of Applied Arts, University of Arts, Belgrade. Member of ULUPUDS, ASIFA, Belgrade Ex-libris Circle (Secretary General), Art Directors Club Serbia. Full Professor of Illustration at the Faculty of Applied Arts, University of Arts, Belgrade. Professor of Animation and Head of the Animation Department at Dunav Film School, Belgrade (1996–2006). Founder of the subject of Animation at the FAA, Belgrade and the FAA Animation Studio (2006). Head of the Digital Arts Group of the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate studies at the University of Arts, Belgrade. Rastko made 14 animated films: The Circus Departs (1982); Stop (1983); It’s Not Whether You Win or Lose (1984); Tango Ragtime (1985); The Tower of Bababel (1988); Ogres and Bogies (1989); Farty (1993); Light in A-Major (1995); Invisible and Poorly Visible Animal Species (1998); Magician (1999); Wanted (2001); All Together on the Wireless Machine (2004); Metamorph (2005); Fantasmagorie 2008 (2008) and was awarded for animation at many international festivals (Munich, Hiroshima, Zagreb, Ottawa, Moscow, Belgrade, Kiev …). Rastko also published several books of illustrations, lectures, texts on ex-libris and made illustrations for the New York Times Book Review as well. “The Rubber Soul Project”, documentary feature film directed by Dinko Tucakovi} (2004), was dedicated to Rastko’s musical project. CD with the music and DVD with the movie were published in the USA (Allegro Music).

MARĆIN FILIPEK Poljska Marćin Filipek je CG animator. Diplomirao je na Fakultetu za dizajn Akademije likovnih umetnosti u Gdanjsku, u Poljskoj. Njegova profesionalna karijera započinje 2002. godine. Od 2007. godine do danas, radi u vi{estruko nagrađivanom postprodukcijskom studiju PLATIGE IMAGE iz Var{ave. Marćin je specijalista za 3D animaciju i specijalne efekte. Učestvovao je u kreiranju specijalnih efekata u projektima kao {to su „Antichrist“, najnoviji film Larsa fon Trira, kinematik za „The Wither“, scensko izvođenje simfonije “Seven Gates of Jerusalem”, K{i{tofa Pendereckog, televizijske animirane serije “What a Channel”, kao i nekoliko reklamnih spotova za Duracell, Danone, Kujawski, Goplana. 6


MARCIN FILIPEK Poland Marcin Filipek is CG and Animation Artist. He graduated from the Faculty of Designing, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland. His professional carrier started in 2002. Since 2007 until now he has been working in PLATIGE IMAGE, multi award-winning post production studio from Warsaw. Marcin specializes in animation, 3D and special effects. He took part in creating special effects to such projects as “Antichrist”, the latest film by Lars Von Trier, “The Wither” cinematic, “Seven Gates of Jerusalem” theatrical performance by Krzysztof Penderecki, TV animated series “What a Channel” and several commercials (such as Duracell, Danone, Kujawski, Goplana). MOHAMED GAZALA Egipat Mohamed Gazala je predavač, reditelj animiranih filmova, osnivač i {ef prvog ogranka ASIFA u Africi i u arapskom svetu, sa sedi{tem u Egiptu. Stekav{i diplomu na odseku za animaciju Fakulteta likovnih umetnosti na univerzitetu Minia u Egiptu (2001.) radio je kao asistent na istom odseku. Magistrirao je 2006. godine na temu animalizma u Diznijevoj animaciji. Trenutno priprema doktorsku disertaciju. Njegova istraživanja su neposredno vezana za oblast animiranog eksperimentalnog filma. Od zavr{etka studija, režirao je ili bio koreditelj mnogih nagrađivanih filmova, kao {to su “Carnival” (2001), “Crazy Works” (2002), “HM HM” (2005), “Sayari Yetu” (2006), uključujući i prvi animirani film u Jemenu, “Salma”, 2006. godine. Mohamed je svojim fimovima ili aktivnostima učestvovao na vi{e međunarodnih festivala i radionica {irom sveta, poput “Africa Animated 3.0”, projektu UNESCO-a u Najrobiju (Kenija, 2006.), radionici “Insight Out” na HFF- Filmskoj & TV akademiji u Potsdamu (Nemačka, 2007.), radionici ANIMART u Janini (Grčka, 2008.), i drugima. Mohamedova misija u poslednje tri godine bila je promocija egipatske i afričke animacije, koja je jo{ uvek nedovoljno poznata oblast čak i u {irem evropskom kontekstu. Organizujući program “Panorama afričke animacije”, Gazala je publici mnogih festivala kao i studentima akademija predstavio ma{toviti svet animacije autora iz Afrike, sa posebnim akcentom na izniman značaj prvog afričkog animiranog filma, remek-dela nastalog u Egiptu 1935. godine MOHAMED GHAZALA Egypt Mohamed Ghazala is a lecturer, director of animated films, the founder and the head of the first branch of ASIFA in Africa and in the Arab world based in Egypt . After graduation from the Animation Department, Fine Arts Faculty, Minia University, Egypt (2001) he worked as lecturer assistant in the same department. In 2006 he done his MFA in animation about Animalism in Disney’s Animation. Currently he is a PhD candidate. His research concerns direct animation experimental films. Since he finished his study, he directed and co-directed many awarded films, such as “Carnival” (2001), “Crazy Works” (2002), “HM HM” (2005), “Sayari Yetu” (2006), including the first Yemen’s animated film “Salma” in 2006. Mohamed participated with his films and his activities in many international festivals and workshops around the world, such as “Africa Animated 3.0”, a project of UNESCO in Nairobi / Kenya 2006, “Insight Out” workshop in HFF-Film & TV academy in Potsdam / Germany 2007, ANIMART workshop in Ioannina / Greece 2008, etc. Mohamed’s mission in the last three years is to promote Egyptian and African Animation, which is still quite an undiscovered area, even in wider European context. He organized a program called “African Animation Panorama” which for the first time presented to the audience in many international festivals and academies, the imaginative world of animation created by authors from Africa with a special emphasis on the most important masterpiece - the first African animated film, Egypt, 1935. 7

Član Poljskog udruženja filmskih stvaralaca i ASIFA. Trenutno sarađuje sa produkcijama Braće Kvej i Mareka Serafinskog. MACIEJ SZNABEL (1977) studied at Fine Arts Academy in Warsaw and Film And TV Academy. Started as a videographer and conceptual designer, became an animator and film editor. Member of Polish Filmmakers Association and ASIFA. Currently he is cooperating on Quay Brothers and Marek Serafinski productions.

After studying History and Art History, SOPHIE ROZE decided to get into animation and in 2004. she entered the La Poudrière Animation School in Valence, France. Vizuelna istraživanja u filmovima JANA BERTRANA i DAMIENA SERBANA od 2003. godine kreću se između naracije i filma čulnosti. Nihov prvi nezavisni zajednički projekat približava se 3D tehnici stavljajući u prvi plan poligonalnu figuru, ahitekturu i gre{ke 3D softvera. Nadahnuti buto plesom, me{ajući 3D animaciju i glumu, Chrysalide poigrava na kontrastu između organske i digitalne teksture. NADIA MICAULT is a graphic designer, illustrator, web page and animated movie director based in Paris, France. Although she has solely begun her career as an illustrator, she has quickly evolved towards other media in order to expend her artistic horizon. Her main interest is focused on illustration for the fashion world as well as web site for the music industry. Currently her work involves melting illustrated forms into real world images, be they still pictures or video clips. After he graduated traditional studies of Visual Arts, LORENZO NANNI moved towards Applied Arts – and more particularly Textile Design – in order to expand his work to new technics. He descovered then embroidery, which enabled him to materialize a personal universe considerable inspired by his passion for anatomy and botany. DAVID ARONOWITSCH (1964) studied directing at the Polish National Film School in Lodz, 1988-91. Kao animator učestvovao je u nekoliko argentinskih i međunarodnih produkcija dugomatražnih filmova. Njegovi nezavisni kratki animirani filmovi prikazivani su na mnogo festivala gde su dobili vi{e od 30 nagrada. Trenutno živi kao frilens ilustrator i animator u mestu San Carlos de Bariloche u državi Rio Negro. BORIVOJ DOVNIKOVIĆ-BORDO (1930) je animator, reditelj, karikaturista, ilustrator, autor stripova i grafički dizajner. Svoje prve nezavisne animirane filmove počeo je da stvara za Zagreb film 1961. godine i spada u red pionira jugoslovenske, hrvatske i zagrebačke animacije. Tokom 55-godi{nje karijere, dobio je mno{tvo nagrada i priznanja. Bio je među čelnim ljudima Svjetskog festivala animiranog fima u Zagrebu, od njegovih samih početaka (1972). Već dugi niz godna je član borda ASIFA, Međunarodnog udruženja animiranog filma. BORIVOJ DOVNIKOVIĆ-BORDO, animation director and animator, cartoonist, illustrator, comic and graphic designer, was born in 1930. He is one of the pioneers of Yugoslav/Croatian/Zagreb animation and started creating in Zagreb film his independent animated films in 1961. During his 55-years professional carreer, he has received a number of national and international grants and awards. He was involved in the leading of the World Festival of Animated Films in Zagreb since its very beginning (1972). MARK KRESTI (1977) je jedan od glavnih reditelja animacije u Studiju AKA u Lodonu. Oblikovao je i režirao veći broj nagrađivanih reklama i kratkih filmova. Film Napasti premijerno je prikazan u SAD na međunarodnom filmskom festivalu na Rod Ajlendu pro{le godine gde je dobio i nagradu za najbolju animaciju. Otada je dobio jo{ osam međunarodnih nagrada, bio u {irem izboru za Oskara i nominovan za Baftu, 2009. godine. Film je baziran na nagrađivanoj knjizi istog naslova, proslavljene autorke knjiga za decu Helen Vord, koju je Mark predivno ilustrovao. MARC CRASTE is a senior animation director working at Studio AKA in London. He has designed and directed many award-winning commercials and short films. Varmints premièred in the US at the Rhode Island International Film Festival August 2008 where it won the Grand Prize for Best Animation. Since then it has gone on to win 8 other international awards, was short-listed for the Oscars and nominated for a BAFTA award in 2009. The film opens on a large cardboard box in the middle of an empty room. An animated character, who is drawn onto the surface of the box, is engaged in the painstaking construction of a mysterious object. At the end of the spot this is revealed to be a perfectly crafted cardboard Audi Q5 car. Finally this transforms into the gleaming real car with the end tag, “We’ve unboxed the box”.

Aron je suosnivač studija Special Guest, ogranka studija 1stAveMachine. RASEL BRUK je studirao animaciju na West Surrey koledžu umetnosti i dizajna. AARON DUFFY is a director residing in Brooklyn, New York. Aaron graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 2006 and has since created several commercials, music videos and short films. RUSSELL BROOKE studied animation at the West Surrey College of Art and Design, and shortly upon graduation he started working as a freelance animator for a variety of animation studios around the world. After graduating at the Higher Graphic Design School in Vienna, JOHANNES SCHIEHSL studied one year of traditional animation in Czech Republic. Since Autumn of 2006 he has been studying animation at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. Dve godine kasnije seli se u Englesku gde radi za studije Red Rover i Uli Meyer, a 1996. odlazi u Toronto gde radi za Dizni putujući povremeno za Los Anđeles. Radio je na mnogim projektima, od reklama do igranih filmova, uključujući i Diznijevu Lepoticu i zver. PETE CANDELAND was born in 1972 and grew up in Australia. He was hired by Disney in Sydney straight from high school in 1991 after they saw his drawing skills. In 1993 he moved to the UK where he worked for Red Rover and Uli Meyer Studios and in 1996 he travelled to Toronto in Canada where he worked for Disney, travelling to Los Angeles on a regular basis. Platige Image is a multi award-winning post-production studio with the technical, creative and production capabilities to provide visual effects services to the entertainment industry. Platige Image specialize in complex and in-depth 3D animation and digital visual effects both for feature and commercial markets. The company has produced several hundred clips, TV commercials. Commercials produced by Platige Image have been awarded many prizes both on Polish and International festivals. The studio is involved in production of animated films. AFRIČKA ANIMACIJA THE AFRICAN ANIMATION Afrička animacija, ovakva kakvu znamo, započinje pre oko 70 godina u Egiptu,a njeni su začetnici braća Frenkel. Najinterasantnije je to {to pioniri animacije u Africi nisu bili profesionalni umetnici ni animatori. Bila je to grupica drvodelja, emigranata iz Rusije koji su u Egipat do{li u potrazi za slobodom i poslom. Niko nije očekivao ni{ta neobično od njih, ali su ba{ oni proizveli prvi afrički crtani film. Suočavali su se sa brojnim problemima u vezi sa neophodnom opremom i finansijama, ali su posle svega uspeli da zavr{e prvi animirani film u Egiptu i celoj Africi. Film koji je naslovljen Uzalud (Mafish fayda) trajao je deset minuta, a glavni junak Mi{ Mi{ Efendija bio je prototip dobro poznatog Mikija Mausa. Nažalost, ovaj je film nestao kada je Kairo goreo 1951. godine. Međurim, drugi film braće Frenkel, Narodna odbrana, sačuvan je i na sreću danas imamo mogućnosti da gledamo ovaj jedinstveni crtani film. Posle prvih filmova, usledila je jo{ nekolicina poduhvata, takoreći u svakoj od zemalja afričkog kontinenta, ali su oni bili pojedninačni poku{aji, dakle, ne grupacije, niti nacionalne industrije. U ovoj istorji afričke animacije prisećamo se imena nekolicine ljudi koji su odigrali značajne uloge: Mustafa Alasan (Niger), Ali Moheb (on je osnovao 1965. godine prvo odeljenje za animaciju na egipatskoj TV), Kaboči (Kongo) i drugi. Usamljena preduzeća ovih ljudi donekle su reprezentovala afričku animaciju, ali ne može se reći da je postojao nekakav pokret, jer se sve zavr{avalo na individualnim oprobavanjima. Ne možemo to porediti sa, recimo, japanskim stilom mange ili anime, ili sa američkim ili evropskim stilom animacije. Afrička animacija nije prava industrija na kontinentu, jer ekonomski slučaj Afrilke je težak i nije lako proizvoditi filmove, pogotovu {to animacija nije kao ostale vrste umetnosti koje je moguće stvarati individualno. Za kvalitetnu animaciju potrebno je puno novca, opreme, saradnika... Na primer, stanovni{tvo Etiopije broji 80 miliona, ali tamo živi samo tri animatora; nema uslova za rad, nema opreme, niti novih projekata. Ipak, svetlo nade dopire iz evropskih zemalja i njihovih kuturnih centara koji obezbeđuju finasijsku podr{ku za animatore iz Afrike i njihove projekte. Navedimo projekat Africa Animated u Keniji koji je inicirao UNESCO, a osnovao ga je savetnik ove organizacije u Najrobiju, Alonso Aznar, sa ciljem da se u žižu postavi jedinstvena afrička umetnost. Aznar je pozvao profesionalne animatore sa akademskim obrazovanjem da podučavaju umetnike iz Afrike u radionicama u okviru kursa ovog projekta. U poslednje tri godine bilo je tri projekta koji su okupili animatore iz vi{e od deset zemalja iz cele Afrike koji su sa sobom doneli motive i priče iz folklora svojih zemalja da bi 86

African animation, as it is, started about 70 years ago in Egypt, whose founders were Frenkel brothers. The most interesting thing is that pioneers of animation in Africa were not professional artists or animators. It was just a group of carpenters who immigrated to Egypt from Russia in search for freedom and work. No one expected from them something unusual, but first African animated cartoon was produced by them. They faced a lot of problems with necessary equipment and financing, but after all they finally made the first animated film in Egypt and in the whole Africa. The duration of this film, which is called In Vain (Mafish fayda) is just 10 minutes. Its main hero was Mish Mish Effendi, who was the prototype of well-known Mickey Mouse. But unfortunately this film was lost when Cairo burned in 1951. However, the 2nd film of Frenkel brothers National defense is still preserved and fortunately we have a chance to watch this unique cartoon today. After these there were many endeavors, we can say, in every country of African continent, but they were just individual attempts, not in group or association or in national industry. In this history of African animation we can remember names of some people, who played the most important role in it, such as Mustafa Alessane (Niger), Ali Moheb (in 1965 he established the first department of animation on Egyptian TV), Kabochi (Congo), etc. Those people made some unique attempts which somehow can present African animation, though we can’t say that there exists some movement of African animation – it’s just individual endeavors. We can’t compare it, say, with Japanese style of Manga or Anime, or with American or European style of animation. African animation is not a real industry in the continent, because the economical case in Africa is hard and it is difficult to produce films, since animation is not like other arts, which can be produced individually. Qualitative animation needs a lot of money, equipments, assistants, etc. For instance, the population of Ethiopia is 80 mln. People, but there live just 3 animators. There are no orders for work, no equipment, no any new projects. Though, lights of hope come from European countries and their cultural centers that provide financial support to animators and their projects from African countries. For example, we can speak about Africa Animated project in Kenya which was initiated by UNESCO when its adviser in Nairobi Alonso Aznar established it in order to spot on the unique case of African art. He invited professional academic animators to learn artists from Africa through participation in workshops in the course of this project. In last 3 years there were held 3 projects which gathered animators from more than 10 coun-

poku{ali da pome{aju čistu afričku umetnost sa tehnikama moderne animacije. (Ja sam učestvovao u poslednjem projektu Africa Animated u Najrobiju, prethodni je bio u Južnoj Africi, a prvi u Keniji i Tanzaniji, a neke od od ovih filmova videćemo i na ovoj projekciji.) Tri projekta rezultovala su sa vi{e od 20 kratkih filmova, a animtori su po povratku kući imali priliku da stečeno iskustvo primene u svojim zemljama. Ovaj projekt koji se nastavlja je dobra vest za industriju. Ipak, ova podr{ka jo{ uvek nije dovoljna i ne pokriva u potpunosti potrebe afričke animacije. Finasijska podr{ka u kulturi u Africi gotovo u celosti usmerena je ka igranom filmu ili klasičnoj umetnosti. Uprkos preprekama, afrički reditelji nastavljaju da proizvode inovativne animirane filmove koji osvajaju međunarodnu publiku. Dana{nja industrija afričke animacije potoji jedino u Egiptu i u Južnoj Africi. Egipat je započeo sa pravom industrijom animacije od 1935. godine sa filmom Mafish Fayda braće Fenkel. Prvi odsek za animaciju na TV otvoren je 1965. godine, a u to vreme su se pojavile i prve egipatske TV reklame. Danas je ovde oko 50 studija koji proizvode komercijalnu animaciju za Egipat i druge afričke kao i zemlje Srednjeg Istoka (Kuvajt, Jemen, Ujedinjene Arapske Emirate, Saudijsku Arabiju, Libiju i druge). I mada Afrika ima dugu istoriju razvoja svoje animacije, jo{ uvek ona nije dosegla nivo animacije kao zemlje koje su sa animacijom krenule čak i posle nas. Imamo mali broj akademija na kojima je moguće učiti animaciju i vrlo je te{ko doći do profesionalne opreme, softvera i instruktora koji bi nam pomogli u edukaciji generacija animatora u njihovoj sopstvenoj tradiciji animacije, ili u specifičnom afričkom stilu animacije koja ne bi bila pod potpunim uticajem zapadnjačkih ili japanskih stilova animacije.

tries from all-over Africa who brought with them their folkloric stories and motives and tried to mix pure African arts with the techniques of modern animation. (I myself participated in the last project of Africa animated in Nairobi (the previous one was in South Africa and the first one in Kenya and Tanzania, we will see some of these films in our screening, too.) Three projects resulted in more than 20 short films and animators after returning home had a chance to use their experience in their native countries. This ongoing project is good news for the industry. But this support is still not enough and does not provide in full for the needs of African animation. Almost all financial support for cultural purposes in Africa is intended for cinema or classical arts. But despite the obstacles, African directors continue to produce innovative animated films that are winning over international audiences. Nowadays industry of African animation exists only in Egypt and South Africa. Egypt started the real industry of animation since 1935 when Frenkel brothers made a cartoon Mafish Fayda. In 1965 was opened first department of animation on TV, at that time also appeared Egyptian TV advertising. Nowadays there are about 50 studios of animation which produce animation commercially for Egypt, other African and Middle Eastern countries (Kuwait, Yemen, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Libya, etc.) Although Africa has a long history of developing of its animation, still it did not reach that level of animation as those countries, which started even after us. We have a very little number of academies which concern animation teaching and it is very hard to get all necessary professional equipments, software and the trainers which would help us to educate generations of animators with their own tradition of animation, or specifically African style of animation without being fully influenced by Western and Japanese styles of animation.

PORTRET ANIMATORA: GEZA M. TOT PORTRAIT OF AN ANIMATOR: GEZA M.TOTH Na{ specijalni gost iz Budim-pe{te, Geza M. Tot, je predavač, reditelj animiranih filmova i osnivač studija za animaciju KEDD. Radi kao profesor na Moholji-Nađ univerzitetu umetnosti i dizajna u Budimpe{ti, od 1995. godine. Radio je i kao gostujući predavač na nekoliko stranih instituta i unverziteta: Kraljevskom koledžu umetnosti u Londonu, Filmskoj akademiji Baden-Virtemberg u Ludvigsburgu, Nacionalnom institutu za dizajn u Ahmedabadu. Kao autor i urednik, Geza je objavio veliki broj članaka, knjiga i poglavlja koja su za predmet imala teme iz oblasti pedagogije i teorije medija. Kao autor filmova, kreirao je nekoliko vanserijskih kratkih filmova (Icar, Maestro, Ergo, Mama) eksperimentalnih art-projekata (XYZ, The Miraculous Mandarin, The Blubeard’s Castle) i animiranih TV serija (VIVA Channel IDs, Modern Folk-tales). Gezini radovi su sa uspehom učestvovali na vi{e od 200 filmskih festivala {irom sveta, osvojiv{i 70 nagrada. Njegov animirani film Maestro bio je nominovan za Oskara 2007. godine u kategoriji najbolji kratki animirani film. Our special guest from Budapest, Hungary, Geza M. Toth, is a teacher, animation film director, founder of the KEDD Animation Studio. He has been working as a professor (PhD, DLA) of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest, since 1995. He also worked as a guest lecturer at several foreign institutes and universities: Royal College of Art (London), Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, (Ludwigsburg), National Institute of Design (Ahmedabad). As author and editor Geza had published numerous articles, books and chapters in the subject-matter of mediapedagogy and mediatheoretics. As a filmmaker he created several extraordinary short films (Icar, Maestro, Ergo, Mama) experimental art projects (XYZ, The Miraculous Mandarin, The Blubeard’s Castle) and animation tv series (VIVA Channel IDs, Modern Folk-tales). Geza’s artworks successfully participated more than 200 film festivals worldwide and were awarded 70 prizes. His animation film, Maestro was nominated to the Academy Awards in 2007 in the Best Animated Short Film category. MILOŠ TOMIĆ: FILMOVI KOJE VOLIM MILOŠ TOMIĆ: MY FAVORITE FILMS Milo{ Tomić je rođen 1976. u Beogradu. Diplomirao je režiju na FDU u Beogradu, u klasi profesora Mi{e Radivojevića. Jedan je od osnivača legendarne grupe “Klipani u pudingu”, strastveni kolekcionar i strpljivi kolažista. Bio je i saradnik u emisiji “Ritam lepog srca” na radiju B92. Trenutno je na post-diplomskim studijama animacije u Pragu. Danas je Milo{ Tomić jedan od najosobenijih autora savremene filmske scene u Srbiji, a njegova interesovanja kreću se od dokumentaraca, preko TV džinglova i reklama, kratkih igranih filmova, muzičkih spotova, do eksperimentalnih filmova. Milo{ Tomić je i autor {pice festivala ANIMANIMA 2009 na kome će predstaviti program “Filmovi koje volim”. Reč je o kolažu bisera koje je izronio na raznim festivalima i iz privatnih kolekcija - dragoceni, čudački, eksplozivni, često zaboravljeni filmovi, ili nepoznati jer su pravljeni u gerilskim produkcijama, ponekad samo za ličnu upotrebu (...Vlada Chab, Wilda Wahn Witz, Thomas Drachan, Boris Kozakov...). “Izme{aću ih sa svojim kratkim stop trik filmovima, pa da vidimo {ta će biti...”, kaže. Milo{ Tomić was born in Belgrade in 1976. He graduated from the Belgrade Faculty of Drama Arts, Directing Department in Professor Mi{a Radivojević’s class. Co-founder of the legendary group “Blockheads in Pudding” and a contributor of the “Rhythm of the Beautiful Heart” broadcast at the B92 Radio as well. Passionate collector and patient collage maker, Milo{ is a postgraduate student of animation in Prague . Nowadays Milo{ Tomić is one of the most distinctive authors at Serbian contemporary film scene and his activities span from documentaries,TV jingles, commercials and musical videos up to the experimental films. Milo{ Tomić has created ANIMANIMA 2009 promo video as well. In Čačak, Milo{ will present special program called “My Favorite films”. It will be a collage of pearls he had found at the festivals or in private collections – precious, weird, explosive, often forgotten films or made by underground productions for the personal use remained almost completely unknown to wider audience... • Team of nearly 70 animators worked n the film at the peak of production. More than 350 people were involved in creating the film. • Steve May, the film’s supervising technical director and his team created 10297 for most of the house floatin scene. The number is doubled for the most dramatic scene when the house actually lifts off. May and his team calculated the number of ballons in order to lift a real house up to the sky: 26.5 millions! • Paradise Falls, Karl’s destination from dreams, was created upon Angel Falls in Venezuela, the highest waterfall in the world. • For the voice of Russell, the filmmakers tested 450 kids all across the country. Sve osim jedne, smrdljive hijene Krevela, kome je svakodnevna tortura voća i povrća dojadila i očajnički priželjkuje da uroni zube u meko meso svojih bližnjih. Re{en da ovo sprovede po svaku cenu i razori “dobru karmu” u svom okruženju, Krevel jedne noći odlazi na groblje re{en da se naždere kadavera, ali mu ne uspeva: neko ga je u tome pretekao. Thanks to the Vegetarian Pact, all animals live together in “peace and harmony”. All but one: stinky hyena Crevel, who is sick of his crappy-daily-fruit-and-vegetableration and is desperate to sink his teeth into some tender co-inhabitant of the world. Determined to get his fill and to wreak havoc in the prevailing “good karma” atmosphere, one night Crevel goes to the cemetery planning to stuff himself with stiffs, but he can’t do it: someone has beat him to it!. Persicus, the president lion, and his consegliere, tiger Altaicus, have set up a perverse food smuggling network with the bodies in order to secretly fulfil their hunger for meat. When they are discovered, they blame Crevel of the brutal profanation, forcing him to escape from the herbivores’ fury. But, desperate, Crevel will return from exile with a plan to overthrow the felines. Hidden under the even smellier costume of wild boar Willy, he proposes to the herbivores that they set up a great alliance in order to become the real deal, the Big Bosses. For this purpose he uses the memory of a legendary hero who one day confronted tiger Altaicus: the mysterious wolf, Wolfeimer. The herbivores innocently believe that their liberator has arrived, but they don’t know that Crevel has a much less appetizing destiny in mind for them...

Pedro Rivero (Bilbao, 1968) je predsednik Baskijskog udruženja scenarista od 2002. godine. Radio je kao pisac na nekoliko animiranih serija i dugometražnih filmova tokom 90-ih. Pedro vodi kompaniju Abrakam Estudio. ANIMAL CRISIS se bazira na stripovima koje je on objavljivao pre petnaest godina u novinama “El Diario Vasco”. Trenutno, pored svog rada, i predaje, a povremeno i sarađuje na filmu i u pozori{tu. Pedro Rivero (Bilbao, 1969) has been a president of the Basque Screenwriters Guild since 2002. He worked as writer on several animation series and feature films during the 90’s. Pedro leads the company Abrakam Estudio. ANIMAL CRISIS is based on the comics he published fifteen years ago in the newspaper “El Diario Vasco”. Currently he combines his work with teaching and occasional collaborations in film and theatre.

Edit je studentkinja psihologije koja živi u Beogradu budućnosti, u 2074. godini. Volontira u istraživačkom centru TDR, a njen posao je da neguje Abela, autističnog matematičkog genija, koji je, po{to je zapisao formulu koja objedinjuje sve energije koje se javljaju na zemlji, utonuo u večnu ti{inu (veruje se da bi takvom formulom bilo moguće izračunati budućnost čak i dokazati postojanje Boga) . Usled problema sa fakultetom, Edit re{ava da pribegne alternativnom metodu davanja ispita. Njen prijatelj Herb joj prodaje čip sumnjivog porekla koji bi mogao da joj pomogne, da koristeći vezu između svesti i podsvesti, poveća svoje intelektualne sposobnosti. Medjutim niko ni ne sluti da će čip, po{to Edit sticajem okolnosti u TDR-u vidi grafikon misteriozne formule, postati svestan samog sebe i početi prvo mentalno a onda i fizički da se razvija kao Editina paralelna ličnost... Estetski uzor ovom filmu su japanske anime, realistični crteži u kojima je postignuta statičnost scena, uz nagla{enu atmosferu i autentični umetnički izraz. Film je kreiran kori{ćenjem klasične, 2D, naprednije 3D, kao i vektorske animacije. Edith is psychology student who lives in Belgrade, in the future, in 2074. She works as a volunteer in the research centre TDR. Her job is to look after Abel, autistic mathematical genius, who fell into everlasting silence after discovering a formula which combines all energies appearing on the earth. It is said that this formula could calculate the future and even prove the existence of God.Because of her problems at the university, Edith decides to resort to an alternative way of passing her exams. Her friend Herb sells her a microchip of suspicious origin which could help her increase her intellectual abilities by using the connection between her consciousness and the subconscious.But nobody can even suspect that, after Edith sees the mysterious formula by chance, the microchip is going to become aware of itself and start developing as Edith’s parallel personality, first mentally and then physically as well... The main aesthetic model for the film was Japanese anime, realistic drawing with static scenes, with emphasized atmosphere and with authentic artistic expression. ALEKSA GAJIĆ je rođen u Beogradu 1974. Diplomirao na FPUD u klasi prof. Rastka Ćirića, kolor strip albumom “Technotise“. Od 1996. godine stalni je saradnik “Politikinog Zabavnika”. Od 2000. radi za izdavačku kuću “Soleil“ iz Francuske, i od tada je objavio {est kolor albuma (objavljenih u jo{ osam zemalja). Ilustrovao je vi{e knjiga u saradnji sa raznim izdavačima. Kao ilustrator, sarađivao je i sa brojnim časopisima i magazinima. Autor nekoliko reklamnih spotova, vi{e muzičkih video spotova, kao i čitavog niza {tampanih promotivnih materijala. Učesnik većeg broja kolektivnih izložbi, a između tri svoje samostalne izložbe, kao najznačajniju izdvaja onu iz 2005. godine u Muzeju primenjene umetnosti u Beogradu. Od 2006. do 2009. godine radio je na svom prvom dugometražnom animiranom filmu Technotise - Edit i ja. Sa porodicom živi trenutno u Zemunu, i radi na novim projektima. ALEKSA GAJIĆ was born in Belgrade in 1974, where he graduated from the FPUD Faculty, in the class of professor Rastko Ćirić. The graduation thesis was the full-colour comic “Technotise”. Since 1996, Aleksa Gajić has been engaged as an author working for the prestigious “Politikin Zabavnik” on a permanent contract. Since 2000, he has worked for the French publishing house “Soleil”. During this period, he has produced six full-colour comic albums, published in eight other countries. Working for various publishers, he appears as an illustrator of a number of books, and he has also collaborated with numerous newspapers and magazines. In addition to this, Aleksa’s opus includes several advertising videos and a number of music videos as well, together with a series of printed promotional designs. He has appeared in many collective exhibitions, and has had three individual exhibitions so far, the most important being the one held in 2005, in the Belgrade Museum of Applied Arts. Between 2006 and 2009, he has been involved in his first feature film Technotise, Edith and Me. At the moment, he lives in Zemun with his family, working on new projects.

Maestro iz Praga: Švankmajer Maestro from Prague: Svankmajer STOP… STOP… STOP… I ONDA… ANIMACIJA! Jan {vankmajer (Prag, 04.09.1934.) Na neki čudan, anti-oblomovski način, lenjost može da postane prednost. Lenjost oka, preciznije - perzistencija, čini da skup “ne-živih” fotografija projektovanih u ritmu od 24 sličice u sekundu (na počecima dvadesetog veka bilo je dovoljno i 12 a danas zahtevni direktori fotografije zahtevaju 29, dok je televizijski standard 25) čini da ih mozak i mi sami prepoznajemo kao život. U ovoj kosmogonijskoj metafori koja nije tek tehnologija koja prethodi metafizici, ne-živo (na rumunskom “nosferatu”) postaje živo i prisutno. Animirano animacijom postaje život sam. Ako živite u represivnom dru{tvu legitiman beg od stvarnosti je da dah života date ne-živim stvarima. Računajući da Veliki brat nije sveprisutan i da možete da ga prevarite bar u maloj lenjosti. Oka. Prag, u kojem je odrastao Jan [vankmajer, bio je tek mračna senka “Zlatnog grada”, vi{e kao scenografija za izgubljenu borbu dobra protiv zla, njegovog sugrađanina, ali su{tinskog apatrida, Franca Kafke (1883-1924). Legenda kaže da je jednog Božića, kao dete, [vankmajer dobio marionete, koje su postale i njegov život. Logično, usledilo je {kolovanje na Akademiji primenjenih umetnosti, odseku za lutkarstvo, Akademije u Pragu. A Prag u vreme njegovog odrastanja svakako je bio jedan od skrivenih kulturnih centara planete, i slavenska prestonica kulture. Već 1958. godine, kada je sticao prva filmska iskustva sa veteranom Emilom Radokom, na filmu Doktor Faust, u vazduhu se moglo naslutiti leto 1968. U teatru “Laterna Magica”, koja je proslavila i Kunderu, Mencla, Formana, “oskarovce” i “nobelovce” artikulisao je svoj umetnički svet koji je krećući se unazad prema nadrealizmu postajao iskrivljena ali verodotojna slika “boljeg novog sveta”. “Teatar maski” koji je osnovao potom, bio je logičan nastavak, kao i nadrealan ali i logičan brak sa suprugom Evom, nadrealističkom slikarkom, keramičarkom, doživotnom saradnicom, do njene smrti 2005. Pod uticajem teoretičara Vratislava Efenbergera, bračni drugovi i zvanično postaju članovi “Čehoslovačke grupe nadrealista”. Ni manje ni vi{e nego upravo burnog leta 1968. Vi{e

STOP… STOP… STOP… AND THEN … ANIMATION! Jan Svankmajer (The Prague, 4th September 1934) In a strange, anti-oblomovian way, laziness can become a comparative advantage. Owing to the laziness of the eye or, more precisely, its persistence, a set of “non-living” photographs projected at a pace of 24 stills in a second will be seen as alive by our brain and our mind (at the turn of 20th century, 12 stills were enough, while the demanding directors of photography today require 29, and the television standard is 25). In this cosmogonial metaphor, which transcends any technology that precedes the metaphysical, the non-living (“nosferatu”, in Romanian) becomes alive and tangible. What is animated through animation becomes the very life that we live. If you happen to live in a repressive society, then to inspire non-living things with a lease of life represents a legitimate form of escapism. After all, the Big Brother may not be truly omni-present and can certainly be deceived, at least in the sphere of the laziness of the eye. The Prague in which Ian Svankmajer grew up was but a dark shadow of the “Golden City”; it was more like a film setting created for his fellow citizen Franz Kafka (1883-1924) – a film setting for the battle between good and evil, in which evil triumphs. A legend has it that one Christmas, the little Svankmajer was given puppets, which were to give a new meaning and direction to his life. By following this direction, he became a student at the Puppetry Department, Academy of Applied Arts in the Prague. There can be no doubt that the Prague of this era was a major “backstage” cultural centre of the world, and a capital of the Slavic culture. During 1958, while Ian was gaining his first experiences, working with the veteran Emil Radok on the film entitled Doctor Faustus, a tinge of the historic “Prague summer of 1968” could already be felt in the air. It was in the cult theatre of “Laterna Magica” (the stage that inaugurated Oscar and Nobel-prize winners such as Kundera, Menzel, Forman), that Ian Svankmajer articulated his own artistic world, a world that was to become a true, although distorted picture of the “brave new world”, by moving backwards into surrealism. A logical sequel to this period was the “Theatre of Masks” that Ian established in the time when he and his wife Eva entered a marriage that was both surrealistic and sensible. The marriage with Eva, a surrealist painter and ceramic artist, was to be a life-long relation, ending with her death in 2005. Influenced by the work of the theorist Vratislav Efenberger, the couple became official members of the “Czechoslovakian Surrealists Group” in (what better a time for this) the turbulent summer of 1968. Following in their parents’ footsteps, Veronica and Vaclav, daughter and son of Ian and Eva’s, are prestigious world-class animators. What new can be said about an author who has inspired a series of artists among whom are the Monthy-Pythonian Terry Gilliam, the cult figures of the Quay brothers, the Hollywood wunderkind Tim Barton and

Ogledao se i u dugometražnim igranim filmovima, pa iako je Salvador Dali alias Avida Dolars (po Bretonu) tvrdio kako “genije uvek citira samog sebe” odnosno “da je svaka slika genija autoportret”, ni sam [vankmajer ne može da porekne uticaje pomenutog Kafke (“kafka” na če{kom znači “čavka”), Poa ili onog smernijeg dela markiza De Sada. Njegov pristup animaciji je onaj “najprimitivnij” mogući, stop-fotografija. Gde sve počinje i zavr{ava, a magija se de{ava na retini oka, bez digitalnih trikova i opsena. Kako beja{e u prvom filmu Poslednji trik (The Last Trick, 1964), tako se nastavilo i do najnovijeg Preživljavajući život (Surviving Life, 2008). Magija se u slučaju [vankmajera de{ava i ispred i iza kamere koja tek ne registruje, nego udahnjuje život umetničkog rukopisa koji nastaje ispered objektiva prekidan stalnim, stop … stop …stop… Iako je vizuelizacija dominantna, [vankmajer se sa istim neobuzdanim entuzijazmom odnosi i prema tonu koji oživljenim slikama daje tek konačni smisao, te tako beži u nedostižnost od gomile nabeđenih slikara koji su animaciju prepoznali kao dokolicu ili profit od svakodnevnice i legitimne karijere. Zvučna dimenzija naročito dolazi do izražaja u sekvencama gozbi koje i u svojoj malograđanskoj dimenziji dobijaju dimenziju kanibalizma. [ta reći o autoru koji u respektabilnom dobu jo{ uvek provocira i izaziva onu prijatnu nelagodnost i{čekivanja {ta će nam doneti svojim novim delom? Ako bi ste hteli da pravite njegov lični Partenon, to je već učinio Teri Gilijam, i sam deo filmskog i animatorskog Olimpa, koji je čak tri [vankmajerova ostvarenja stavio u deset najvećih animiranih filmova svih vremena. [vankmajer je i intelektualni lavirint, ili, jezikom savremene generacije, rolerkouster, u koji svako ulazi na sopstvenu odgovornost. Spasavaj se ko može. Ili se zabacite i uživajte u vožnji. (Ah, da ne zaboravimo ni Dejvida Linča, koji je u vrhovima [vankmajera prepoznao “Tvin Piks”.) U mnogim filmovima, pozicija naratora je iz dečije perspektive, zato je savet kada se suočite sa planetom zvanom Jan [vankmajer, da to učinite dečijim očima, du{om, ili bar pronađite dete u sebi koje je u stra{nim senkama umelo da prepozna veličansteveno čudo zvano – život. Ili umetnost. Bilo kako bilo, budite Alisa, kojoj nije potrebna ni matematika ni beli zec. Samo pro{apućite: Jaaaaannnn … [vaaankmaaaajeeer … I desiće se čudo. Animacija. Život. many others? An author who, in his eighth decade of life is still (hyper-) active and enjoys the rare honour of witnessing his own retrospectives at the major world festivals? Among his works are the few full-feature films and, although Breton claims that Salvador Dali (alias Avida Dolars) insisted that “a genius always quotes only himself”, not even Svankmajer can deny the influence that Kafka had on his work (in Czech, “kafka”means “crow”) or, for that matter, the apparent influence of Poe and the more moderate Marquise De Sad. Ian’s approach to animation is the “rawest” possible one, the “stopphotography”. This is where it all begins and ends at the same time, the magic takes place at the eye’s retina, without any digital tricks or illusions. This has always been the same, from the very first film (The Last Trick, 1964), to the very latest one (Surviving Life, 2008). The magic of Svankmajer happens both in fornt of the camera and behind it. The camera itself does much more than simpy recording the life – it goes on to breathe in the life of the artistic script created in front of the lenses, interrupted by the endless flow of “stop … stop … stop… “. Although the visualisation plays the dominant role, Svankmajer demonstrates the same wild enthusiasm in his approach to the tone which gives the ultimate meaning to the enlivened pictures. In this way, the author stands apart form the bunch of self-proclaimed painters who treat animation as a pastime or a profit, something to be done outside the legitimate career. The dimension of the sound is especially accentuated in the scenes depicting the feasts which, in their petty bourgeoisie dimension, adopt an air of cannibalism. What new is there to be said about the author who, at an advanced age, still provokes and evokes that creepy, alebeit cozy sense of suspension, of what his next work will bring to us. If anyone tried to create a personal Pathenon of Ian Svankmajer’s, they would soon discover that this has already been done by Terry Gilliam and the elite of the film and animation Olymp, who have included no fewer than three of Svankmajer’s films among the top ten animated films of all times. Svankmajer is an intellectual labyrinth or, in the jargon of the new generation, a roller coaster where the visitors take the responsibility for their own ride. Having embarked on the journey, it is either “each man for himslef”, or “sit back and enjoy the ride”. (Oh, we must not forget David Lynch who discovered his Twin Peaks in the summits of Ian Svankmajer). In many of his films, the aspect of narration is from a child’s perspective: this is why it is always advisable to face the planet Svankmajer through the eyes and the soul of a child, to try and find within yourself a kid capable of seeing thorugh the horrid shadows and finding in them the magnificent miracle of life, or art. Whatever happens, try to be Alice, with no mathematics and no white rabbits. Just whisper: Jaaaaaaannnn … Svaaankmaaaajeeer … and the miracle is sure to happen. Animation. Life. Njegov kratki film Carlitopolis, snimljen na kraju studija u Francuskoj, osvojio je nekoliko nagrada kao {to su Adobe-ova nagrada za dostignuća 2006. i nagrada publike na festivalu kratkog metra u Klermon Feranu. Nieto alias Profesor Nieto kreirao je sopstveni {ou u kome predstavlja interaktivnu animaciju izvodeći “eksperimente” na različitim vrstama životinja: u amfiteteatru, sa asistentom Patrikom ({impanzom u pelenama!), studenti prisustvuju luckatim eksperimentima. He moved to France where he decided to focus on film direction. His short film Carlitopolis, shot at the end of his studies in France, won several awards such as the 2006 Adobe achievements awards and the audience awards in Clermont Ferrand short film festival. Nieto alias Professor Nieto has created his own show in which he presents interactive animation performing unusual “experiments” on different sorts of animals: in an amphitheatre, assisted by Patrick (a chimpanzee wearing diapers!), students attend foolish experiments. Izložba: CVETKOVIĆ: GRAFIZMI Exibition: CVETKOVIĆ: GRAPHISMS Nebojša Cvetković je diplomirao na odseku za grafički dizajn Fakulteta primenjenih umetnosti u Beogradu. Bavi se istraživanjem i eksperimentisanjem u {irokim okvirima grafičkog dizajna i grafike, ilustracije, stripa. Oblikovao vizuelni identitet muzičkog festivala Dis-patch. Učestvovao na mnogim festivalima, nagrađivan na Grifonu, bijenalnom konkursu za najbolji grafički dizajn u Srbiji i regionu, Festivalu Magdalena u Mariboru, Međunarodnom salonu stripa u Beogradu. Njegovi radovi su objavljivani u časopisima Print, Icon Magazine, Vreme, Ambijenti. “Graphisms” (njegova prva samostalna izložba, 2007) je prilika da ga i posetioci festivala ANIMANIMA 2009 bolje upoznaju. ANIMATION COMPENDIUM Film animation in Serbia, texts selected by Ranko Munitić: Milo{ Crnjanski’s text about Mickey Mouse from 1930, important essays on Zagreb school of animated film, the history about animation in Belgrade and world wide, all the way to the recent subject such as computer animation.

FILMSKA SLIKA I STVARNOST Koja je su{tinska razlika između takozvane filmske slike stvarnosti i stvarnosti koja nas okružuje – jeste osnovna tema studije Ranka Munitića, koju u drugom delu knjige pro{iruje jos deset eseja važnih autora na istu temu, od 1896. do 2006. godine. Knjige u izdanju Filmskog Centra Srbije predstaviće animator, reditelj i profesor iz Beograda, Rastko Ćirić. FILM IMAGE AND REALITY What is the essential difference between so called film image of reality and reality we exist in – is the basical question Ranko Munitić made in his study, extended with ten essays by the important authors on the very same subject spanned from 1896. to 2006. Both books were published by Serbian Film Center and will be presented by animator, director and professor from Belgrade, Rastko Ćirić.
