KAREN KALUNIAN Karen has spent the last ten years in animal rescue. Her love for animals started as a young girl, when she had

So began the mission of wanting to help more shelter animals, something that has turned into a ten year career and is now known as "Animal Talk." The need for promoting shelter animals became apparent to Karen as she worked in the industry. She felt like

promoted them on social media, in print media, on television and on the radio, and now with a brand new Animal Talk magazine. The mission of Animal Talk is to connect people with pets and to give every adoptable animal the same chance at finding a loving home. Karen is thrilled to collaborate with Meaghan Susi in creating the Animal Talk magazine, along with many amazing photographers who give their time to help save lives. Enjoy the magazine and maybe you will even find your new best friend!

Andrea grew up in Europe and worked in the fashion industry for over 10 years. What started as a hobby in 2018 to make martingale collars more stylish for dogs quickly became a continually growing business when Andrea realized how many friends (and friends of friends) where interested. Three years later, Andrea has thousands of sales on Etsy, sells to local shops and donates collars to local shelters and rescues. letter from the

pack leaders

Well, its, finally here! Our inaugural issue of Animal Talk! This is a 100% volunteer-run project. Every photoshoot, design, and story within this issue were put together by dedicated animalloving volunteers hoping to make a difference. Animal Talk magazine started out as a photoshoot idea, and that idea evolved into what you are looking at right now. We have poured hours of our heart and soul into this project and we hope you find joy and happiness when looking at it! And maybe even find your next furry best friend! We really hope Animal Talk serves as a resource for adopting, fostering, or maybe even helping someone you know who is looking to adopt or foster. And if you're not looking to add to your family, that's okay too, because we also want to fill the pages with other resources, happenings, and feel-good stories that will make your day. We also hope to add new sections in the coming issues.

Thank you for loving animals as much as we do.

H A P P Y TAI L S

WHY DID YOU WANT TO FOSTER? HAD YOU EVER FOSTERED BEFORE? WAS IT DIFFICULT TO BECOME A FOSTER? I think fostering is a great way to help a rescue organization if you aren’t able to adopt. When the pandemic began due to COVID-19, public schools were transitioning to distant learning. This was a great opportunity to foster a dog since we would be home and especially because Heart of RI needed to close temporarily. We had fostered once before for Heart of RI several years ago. It was during an anticipated ice/snow storm. We fostered three Chihuahuas. It wasn’t difficult to become a foster, but it was difficult to give the dogs back. I own a house and it is just my daughter and myself, so I imagine it is easier to foster an animal when you are a homeowner. HAD YOU THOUGHT ABOUT ADOPTING PRIOR TO FOSTERING? We had thought many times about adopting prior to fostering. But my daughter was younger and we were not home as often as I would like to be if I were to adopt a dog. DO YOU HAVE OTHER PETS, IF YES HOW WAS IT TO INTEGRATE YOUR NEW FOSTER? IF NO PETS, HOW DID YOUR FOSTER ADJUST TO YOUR FAMILY/HOME? We currently do not have any other pets, which was needed in order to foster January. January adjusted to our family and our home immediately. There was an immediate connection that we had and felt with her. She was very calm and easy going right away. She even snuggled and slept on my chest on the couch that night! She is 54 pounds, too!

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR NEW FURRY FAMILY MEMBER? PERSONALITY, BREED, AGE, SILLY HABITS, COLOR? January is a pitbull mix. She is estimated to be five years old. She is white with black spots and a brown ear. What is very cool is the bottom half of her right eye is sky blue, and a smaller part of her left eye is sky blue, too. January is a silly goose! She loves her squeaky toys, playing tug, and she goes around in circles when she gets happy. She loves looking out the front glass door or any window she can see out of. She loves to watch what is going on outside. She loves to sunbathe inside and outside. She will lay down and bask in the sun for hours. She loves to take car rides and look out the window or rest her head on my daughter Morgan’s lap in the back seat. One of January’s favorite things to do is take nice long walks. She sniffs everything and is so alert! She will sometimes jump up onto a side wall and just rest her head there staring at something. She loves her food, too, of course! When she really likes a treat, she will sit with such force to let you know she is READY! Last but not least, January is the biggest snuggle bug you will ever find. She loves to lay next to you or on you. She loves to have her belly rubbed. And she will give you as many kisses as you can take! That is one of her favorite things to do! She has so much love to give. She is the best thing to happen to our family. She makes us better people. We are so happy to know we get to spoil her and love her forever now!

IS FOSTERING EVERYTHING YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE? Yes and so much more! I was a little nervous at first because of the unexpected, and that I wanted to make sure January was happy and felt safe. January had been in and out of rescues, and was adopted but returned less than a year later. She was not returned because the family didn’t want her though. So I was very surprised from the very first night at how much love she had to give despite all that she has gone through in less than five years. She brought such joy, love, and humor into our lives each day, especially at a time when residents of Rhode Island were ordered to stay at home. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO ADOPT YOUR FOSTER? I couldn’t picture life without her. It was that simple. She became part of our family. Even though I made it clear at the start that we were going to just be fostering her, I realized that adopting January was the only option. When they say “when you know, you know”, well I knew. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING OF FOSTERING? Assess your lifestyle and make sure that it is a good fit for fostering an animal. Think about how often you are home, how active you are, how organized you are, how social you are at home. What type of home you live in, and what that would look like if an animal were to live there. Think about how much time you can commit to your foster and what will be required of you. And think about how you will feel when the time comes for your foster to be adopted. JOIN OUR PACK | ANIMAL TALK

Honoring the memory of those who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

For Boone

March 25, 2020 - February 28, 2021 By Trisha Torres (Boone's Mom)

Love did not come immediately with this guy, No sweeping me off my feet. No having to stop and catch my breath, The first time we locked eyes. Love crept in slowly, Cloaking itself in admiration. For this dog who was so determined, To make the very best out of the lousy hand he had been dealt. Love came in a gentle wave, Smoothing out the sharp edges of my patience. When this not-always-easy dog pushed me, On one too many things some days. Love immersed itself in my laughter, Pure joy in his Tigger-like bounces each time I entered his room. There are few times in life that someone is that overjoyed to see you… every single time. Knowing our time together was limited, made me force my always on-the-go tendencies to simply — sit and be present, Spending hours on the couch with him curled up beside me, Love seeping into me through osmosis. Standing together at the saddest of crossroads, Where his bad moments were tipping over to the greater than his good moments. Holding myself to the promise made Of only all the best days. Acknowledging his once always-bright eyes, Where now often shadowed.... fatigued. The physical ailments that even his mighty spirit could not slay. Making the decision that it was time to let him go, Holding tight as I sent him off with a million wishes. Go on ahead, my wild boy, be brave, be well, be strong. And know I am there.… you will carry me with you forever, In those pieces of my heart, You captured completely as your own.

For Apple Apple was a cat who was loved by many. All you had to do was look at him and he stole your heart. He had one ear, three teeth and big beautiful eyes. He had a great big personality too. To know him was to love him. He was the favorite of many of the volunteers at the Community Cat Center. Apple, Apple, Apple! Or Apple Juice as he was fondly called by one of the directors of the center. I started at the center in June and was immediately taken in by his charismatic soul. He just loved to sit with people and watch them work. Enjoyed getting love and pets. Apple was diagnosed with feline leukemia. As time went by he was not getting adopted or even looked at by people. I volunteered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Apple had to be kept separate from cats that were FELV negative. I would take him in the office with me while I did computer work. An instant bond was formed! I made him a cozy spot on the chair next to me. But no, he sat on my lap every time while I worked. He would just look up at me and purr. We had formed our weekly routine. One day in November I decided that Apple was coming home with me. I started hating leaving him at the center. Something told me he might not have much time left being that he was already five years old. I had a great room over the garage where he could live separate from my cats. I had coffee with him every single morning. I watched the news with him at night and sometimes movies. His favorite movie was Lord of the Rings. He had a wonderful sunny spot with lots of windows to see the lake and trees outside. Apple passed away peacefully at my home in March. I am so glad he got to spend his final days being loved and cared for. He knew what it felt like to have a home. We all do the best we can to help animals and that is all we can do. I received so much love from that
