normally reserve my letter to let you know what to expect in the current issue or to just chat about what’s on my mind. However, this time I want to tell you about a wonderful little 14 month old dog named Peggy Sue, who is a beautiful 20lb Boston Terrier Mix. Peggy Sue is my current foster dog who came into my life 2 months ago with little known about her history. We know she was a stray picked up by Texas Animal Control and sat in a small dark cage until her time was up. Had it not been for the wonderful folks at Friends Of Homeless Animals and American Boston Terrier Rescue she would have been put to her death like so many unfortunate dogs who’s owners never come for them. Peggy Sue was fully vetted, spayed, cared for and then began her long journey on a transport to us after we selected her as a good foster fit for our house. She arrived, seeming no worse for the wear, hopped into my car and back home we went. I was immediately delighted to see her excited to play with my big dog Harvey. Because we did not yet know her and wanted to be sure she was comfortable and everyone stayed safe, we kept everyone apart and let Peggy Sue relax and snuggle on the couch until the following day. After some careful introductions, we let her get some of her puppy angst out and play with Harvey, and boy did they play. She does like rough play and would do great in a home with perhaps a large dog or another spitfire smaller pup. But, don’t be fooled, as much as she loves some wild play, she is equally thrilled to quietly sit beside her favorite people and especially LOVES to wiggle under the covers for a night of cuddling. While I have discovered that Peggy Sue is one of the most loving, playful and intelligent dogs I’ve ever met, is house trained, hardly barks, responds easily in training and is even great at: sit, down, and paw... and on about her goodness!), I have also discovered that she has a fear of strangers coming into her “home”. It’s so sad to think of what she may have gone thru in her short life to make her feel that she is not safe and needs to protect herself. It’s especially hard because this also means that the deck is stacked against her. Even though she is making amazing strides in her training to cope with her fear, I worry for her future if she can’t find that special person to love her, flaws and all. As far as her fear, we have found that if strangers are permitted to approach, pet, or pick her up before Peggy Sue is ready, or if she feels threatened, she will become upset and reactive. However, it’s actually quite impressive to see how this little girl has come around with simple training and will warm right up and love the things that might have frightened her in the past. It’s clear that she truly loves people but just needs a little extra care. It also really shows how intelligent she is and how with the right person she could truly blossom into an amazing dog. It’s my hope that Peggy Sue finds a
home with someone who will continue her training and simply love her like she so desperately wants to be loved. I think a fenced yard important for her to have, but another dog and a relaxed home environment would also be a dream come true for her and help her thrive. If you’re looking for a new addition to your family and would like to give Peggy Sue a chance at a new life or would like more info, you can check out her adoption profile on Petfinder at: http:// www.petfinder.com/petdetail/16778409 I hope you will consider giving this amazing, intelligent and loving girl a home as she truly deserves a family who is in her corner and willing take the time to teach her that strangers are friends and she is safe in this world.

Locally and Around The Globe…
Recent Study Confirms Benefits of Dogs in the Workplace We knew is was a great idea but now a recent study conducted by Central Michigan University confirms benefits of taking your dog to work. The new research found that when dogs were present in a group, employees were more likely to trust each other and collaborate more effectively in the office. The CMU study involved several experiments; one involving groups of four individuals, some with or without dogs. Each group member was charged with a fake crime and surveyed to see if they would report their fellow group members. Groups with dogs present made employees 30 percent less likely to report each other, showing that canine co-workers make for a more cohesive and trustworthy workplace environment.
Which Came First... The Chicken or The Diaper? Chickens — they’re not just for laying eggs anymore. While the practice of keeping poultry as pets has grown in popularity over the past few years, their often inappropriate bathroom etiquette remains an issue. When you have fowl inside the house, what do you do about their foul ... poop? For some pet bird owners — including actor Ewan McGregor — it’s all about the diaper. Chickens can’t be housebroken, but, and I speak from experience...they can become amazing cuddly pets. So the Chicken Diaper is perfect so you can love your chicken and your house!

waiting for his family to come back and relieve him from his solitude. On the contrary, Sugar is having a grand time playing with toys in his Kitty City suite at the brand new Best Friends Pet Care resort for pets — right inside of Walt Disney World! The 50,000-sq.-ft. facility, which opened on Sept. 1, 2010, not only accommodates Sugar’s needs, but can also host up to 300 pets at a time, including dogs, ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs. In addition to the air-conditioned and protected Kitty City, the resort has a water park, a 25,000-sq.-ft. dog park that has a walking trail through a wooded area, pet luxury suites and vacation villas.

1 FREE DAY OF DAYCARE October is American Humane’s
Adopt-A-Dog Month
Want to be a Superhero? Rescue a Shelter Dog … and Get a Loyal Sidekick for All of Life’s Adventures You can save the day for a homeless dog -- and find a faithful companion who will be at your side for all of life’s adventures -- by adopting a dog from your local shelter or breed-rescue group during American Humane’s Adopt-A-Dog Month® in October. Adopting a dog is a heroic feat that’s easy to perform, and animal shelters and breed-rescue groups are filled with amazing dogs: large, small, mixed breeds, even purebreds. In fact, millions of loyal, lovable dogs are surrendered to our nation’s animal welfare organizations every year because their owners simply couldn’t take care of them anymore. Now they’re homeless -- and just waiting for a hero like you! During Adopt-A-Dog Month, we encourage you to visit your local shelter or breed-rescue group, meet potential sidekicks and discover the many super-size benefits of having a dog: happiness, companionship, improved physical and emotional health, and devoted love. Dogs also encourage people to exercise, enhance family and social relationships, promote laughter and act as a nonjudgmental audience and sounding board. Now that’s super!

IT’S ME OR THE DOG Victoria Stilwell, star of “It’s Me Or The Dog”, chats with the Animal Print about her upcoming Rhode Island appearance, the difference between Britsih and American clients and some of her favorite things! By Katenna Jones & Stephanie Georgia Photo by Bill Adler

two books, It’s Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet and Fat Dog Slim: How to Have a Healthy, Happy Pet.
What you may not know is that British born Victoria Stilwell is also an advocate for numerous rescue groups and dog-related causes, co-founded several dog training companies, has been featured in countless magazines and is also a best selling author of
In the early 1990s, Stilwell began her career in pet training when she created her own successful dog-walking company and immediately recognized the need for qualified professionals to help her clients with the training process. While pursuing a successful acting career (working in London’s West End as well as in numerous films, TV

series, commercials and voiceovers), she expanded her focus to dog training by working with some of Britain’s most respected positive-reinforcement dog trainers and behaviorists. The rest as they say, is history! We were thrilled when Victoria took a moment in her busy schedule to chat with The Animal Print’s own behavior columnist Katenna Jones about her upcoming appearance, right here in Rhode Island at the VMA on Wednesday October 13th. Katenna tells us, “I wanted to learn more about Victoria on a personal level. On a recent phone interview, I asked the positive dog training guru a few, well, unusual questions!” Besides learning she has one older sister, chocolate is her favorite ice-cream flavor, and she looks up to Jane Goodall, Katenna also found out the following interesting information: Photo by Bill Adler
Katenna: What was the first pet you ever had? Victoria: When I was 9 or 10, my first pet was a cat. Well, actually, it was a kitten. K: When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? V: I always wanted to be – an actually became – an actress. My mum tells me that I was in my 30s when I realized that working with dogs was my calling. K: If you could change one thing about your past, what would you change? V: I’d still have my father alive.
Love Your Pet. Naturally. Your pet will enjoy our all-natural and organic pet food and accessories, and you’ll enjoy a 10% case discount!
K: What is the hardest part about your job? V: I would say when owners don’t do the work. I feel like there are letting their dogs down. The dogs could be so successful if the owners would just do the work, and I am so disappointed when that doesn’t happen. K: When did you know you had hit “celebrity” status? V: When people started looking at me strongly on the street – like, “Is that the dog lady?” K: What was the funniest, or most embarrassing, thing that ever happened while you were working with a client? V: Once, I was working with these two big Labradors and wanted to see how much they pulled on the leash. Unfortunately, I was wearing the wrong shoes and they pulled me right down to the ground! The whole thing was caught on camera, but they never put it on the show! K: Have you noticed any difference between British and American clients, in terms of how they treat their pets or willingness to follow your guidance or the types of problems you most frequently encounter? V: They are actually very similar. The only difference is that Britain is a little ahead in terms of embracing training techniques, utilizing the more advanced, scientific-based positive reinforcement methods.

Custom Engraved Tribute To Your Pet
K: Do you have any hobbies? V: I love beautiful homes and gardens and historical houses. K: What was the last song you downloaded onto your iPod? V: The last thing I downloaded was The Sound of Music for my daughter. K: What shows are waiting for you on your DVR? V: I really love 60 minutes, I just watched The Pacific on HBO, and I like Entourage K: What are your tv/book plans for the future…anything we should keep and eye out for? V: I am currently working on my 3rd book, and also working on the 3rd series of Its Me or the Dog in and around NYC. K: What can Rhode Islanders expect to find at your appearance…will you be working with local dogs during your visit? V: There will be shelter dogs from PARL, it is an evening of entertainment where the audience will learn a lot, get sort of backstage view of what I do. It will be a behind the scenes of the show. The Audience will see great techniques to use with own dogs, and it’s great for all of the family. You will learn my training secrets, as it were. Sounds good to me! Attention, companion animal caretakers! The Animal Print along with the ASPCA would like to point out these common-sense cautions that’ll help keep your pets safe and stress-free this time of year. If you do suspect your pet has ingested a potentially dangerous substance, please call your veterinarian or Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435.
1. No tricks, no treats: that bowlful of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. * Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate—can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Symptoms of significant chocolate ingestion may include vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, increased thirst, urination and heart rate—and even seizures. * Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol sweetener can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, which leads to depression, lack of coordination and seizures. In cases of significantly low blood sugar, liver failure has been known to occur. * Ingesting tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can pose a choking hazard or cause intestinal blockage.
Sunday, September 26th, 12 pm, at Goddard Park, Warwick, RI Registration at 12:00PM. Fee per hiker is $20.00. The 2-mile walk starts at 1:00PM. Rain or Shine. All dogs must be leashed. For more information call 885-1158 or visit EGAPL website www.EGAPL.org.
Pledge sheets are available at Greenwich Bay Animal Hospital, Stop&Shop, Dave’s Market, Allie’s Tack & Feed, Ocean State Veterinary Specialists, Critter Hut, Bone Appetit, Petco, EG Main Street Coffee, Salty Dog and many more locations.
2. Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered to be relatively nontoxic, yet they can produce gastrointestinal upset should pets ingest them. Intestinal blockage could even occur if large pieces are swallowed.
3. Keep wires and cords from electric lights and other decorations out of reach of your pets. If chewed, your pet could experience damage to his mouth from shards of glass or plastic, or receive a possibly life-threatening electrical shock.
15
edy Cats lloween 4. A carved pumpkin certainly is festive, but do exercise extreme caution if you choose to add a candle. Pets can easily knock a lit pumpkin over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned or singed by candle flames.
5. Dress-up can be a big mess-up for some pets. Please don’t put your dog or cat in a costume UNLESS you know he or she loves it (yup, a few pets are real hams!). For pets who prefer their “birthday suits,” however, wearing a costume can cause undue stress.
6. If you do dress up your pet, make sure the costume isn’t annoying or unsafe. It should not constrict the animal’s movement or hearing, or impede his ability to breathe, bark or meow. Also try on costumes before the big night. If your pet seems distressed, allergic or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting him go au naturale or donning a festive bandana.
7. Take a closer look at your pet’s costume and make sure it does not have small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that he could choke on. Also, ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury.
8. All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treat visiting hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful for pets.
9. When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, take care that your cat or dog doesn’t dart outside.
10. IDs, please! Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If for any reason your pet escapes and becomes lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip can increase the chances that he or she will be returned to you.

Housetraining Your Puppy or Dog
17 {Behavior }
Are you dealing with a pooping puppy? Or a urinating Yorkie? Don’t give up on Fido just yet. These tips can help you deal with your housetraining woes. Schedule A Veterinary Exam If your dog suddenly begins having “accidents” or if you have been unsuccessful at housetraining, contact a veterinarian right away, resolving health issues may resolve the problem. Aslo keep in mind that intact males may be marking, in which case neutering can help significantly (not to mention the added health benefits). Understand Normal Dog Behavior • Never rub a dog’s nose in urine or feces or punish a dog for an “accident!” This will teach your dog to fear you, and he may hide when he has to “go.” • It is NOT instinctive for dogs to relieve themselves outside - it is only natural for them to not go where they sleep. Everywhere else is fair game! • You must be patient. Regardless of whether you have a puppy or you have recently adopted an adult. The dog will not automatically understand the routine in your house or know where the door is. It is up to you to train them!
Getting Started
1. Items That Will Help • Recommended reading: “Way to Go!! A Guide to Housetraining a Dog of Any Age” by Patricia McConnell. • Decide on a special treat that they will ONLY get when they poop/pee outside. • Keep the treats handy EVERY SINGLE time you take the dog out by keeping them near the door. • Treats should be small (about the size of your pinky nail) and you will need at least 3 to 5 treats for each potty break. 2. Scheduled Feedings •A lways feed by schedule, rather than free feeding. Eating all day = pooping all day! •G etting your dog on scheduled feedings: 1. Put the food down and remove any uneaten food after 20 mins. 2. The dog is not offered food until the next scheduled meal. 3. Stick to it! The dog should be eating on schedule within 1-4 meals. 3. Thorough Cleaning • S pots where the dog urinated/defecated previously attracts them to keep going there. • I f you clean it a little, the dog will be attracted to “refresh” the spot. If you clean it thoroughly, there will be no attraction to go there again. •P et urine is very difficult to get out and standard household cleansers don’t cut it, so you may want to rent or hire a carpet cleaner with special pet urine enzymatic cleaner or use an enzymatic cleaner, like Nature’s Miracle or Simple Solution, found in most pet supply stores or online. 4. Using Chemical Attraction To Your Advantage •D o not throw away any “accidents” since dogs are attracted to go the same places over and over. Let’s use this to our advantage! •F irst, pick up any indoor “accidents” and bring them outside to t he potty area. •P ut the poop right onto the ground or secure the material used to wipe up urine to the ground with a rock or stick . • When they do poop outside, leave the most recent poop in place, to encourage your dog to go again in that area. •A fter each new poop has been left in that area, you can clean up any previous poops. •B e sure to go back inside the house and immediately clean any soiled areas thoroughly . 5. Supervision • You must see everything that comes out of the dog so you can. interrupt inside “accidents” and reward outside potties.
Treats your best friend can’t resist.
• If you notice a mess after it has happened, you are not supervising closely enough. • Watch for sniffing, squatting, tail out straight, or circling – take the dog out immediately. If the dog begins to poop/pee inside: 1. Immediately interrupt them by clapping and saying “Ahh ahh!!” 2. Get the dog outside asap (carry them whenever possible and put the leash on the dog as you head to the door). • You MUST be WITH the dog outside so as to praise them – simply letting them out and shutting the door will not cut it. Once you are outside, take the dog right to the area where you want him to “go” 1. Walk back and forth or around in little circles. 2. Do not play with or converse until they go (this may take some time, but be patient.) 3. When the dog begins to go, quietly whisper a command you plan to eventually use to tell him to “go”- such as: go potty, get busy, do your business, etc. - Quietly praise them and get that special treat ready. 4. As soon as the poop/pee is complete, immediately praise, give several rapid-fire treats, and play. 5. Next, your dog gets to do whatever he wants (go for a walk if it’s a nice day, run back inside if it’s cold out, etc.) 6. Scheduled Potty Breaks • Take the dog out at regular, predictable intervals. • The frequency of potty breaks depends on age, breed, and previous training (anywhere from every 10 minutes to once an hour.) • Set a watch alarm or timer to remind you of potty breaks. • Stick to the intervals until the dog is successful for several days. • Slowly increase the amount of time between intervals only if the dog succeeds. • As you succeed, gradually allow more and more freedom inside the home. • If you see accidents, go back to more frequent potty breaks, increase. supervision, and reduce freedom inside Continued on page 33

Gilbert or Precious
Many a summer, Gilbert has crossed Narrow River in South County throughout many seasons. His mate was struck and killed, perhaps on purpose, by a jet-skier. Gilbert was seriously wounded, in white wing and black webbed foot. Fellow swans either ignored him or hissed and pecked him. On one bank, a kind person took him in and helped him survive his first winter: he could no longer fly with the flock to warmer climes. The nearby vet would not, could not, help out with care and meds, because swans are not native birds. They and their cygnets are classified as instrusive pests. But not to the rescuers. On the opposite side of Middle Bridge there was a woman who also fed and protected the regal bird. She believed it was the female that had survived and called it “Precious.” Oddly, and you must believe this, both friends of the feathered and forlorn creature also had a white cat. Now, where do I fit into this tale? I bike to the cafe at Middle Bridge early each morn and seek a glimpse of Gilbert. I like that name, because it suggests that the graceful Garbo-esque beauty is the re-incarnation of Gilbert Stuart, the first American artist, who was born on Narrow River. I find Gilbert and
Voted #1 TOP DOG BOARD & TRAIN FACILITY
{Wandering Tails} by Mike23Fink say “good morning” and pay some compliments. And pretend that he listens, hears, understands, welcomes my words and gestures. Yes, I have snapped pictures, done sketches, designed images, to keep this lovely symbol with me beyond my July and August sojourn at the shore. If Gib is not to be found among the egrets, herons and Canada geese, I look for him...or perhaps her...at the other address. He seeks solace and company among other ornithological cousins, or even poses amicably with either of those albino felines. I can’t express the melancholy magic, the charm, the sheer elegance, of this swan--which is in the wild an aggressive, territorial, rather frightening denizen of the waterways, an aristocrat that shuns company. And so, I end this still-too-brief account with a philosophical conclusion, or question. What does a “pet” do for us? Do we rob the orphan of his own kind, and take it from the dignity of the wilderness and make of it a captive in a cage? Often, yes. But in the case of the Precious Gilbert, his life takes on a human value. He/ she says to me, with its dinosaur neck, its sometimes painful stance, its proud silhouette sailing back and forth at dawn or dusk, “You have maimed me, but you have also succoured me. You are persons and I am here like a messenger. I don’t know what the message is. Maybe it’s as blank as the white fur and feather, and it’s up to you to pen your own purpose.” That’s why I try at the close of each summer to make the effort.

Modern Dog Design digs for the design conscious canine
The Cubix Dog Mansion by German company Best Friend’s Home is probably the most modern dog house I have ever seen. It is designed to pay homage to the Bauhaus style. The raised roof and rectangular windows are nice architectural details. It’s made from quality varnished wood and features break-proof window glass that is resistant to all types of weather conditions. Available sizes include small, medium, and extra large (yay!). This pet palace is manufactured and shipped from Germany, so I’m guessing overseas shipping ain’t be cheap, but — hey — neither is this dog house.
This pooch-sized camper from Straight Line Designs was clearly created with the life-sized Airstream in mind. I’d totally park this baby out back for my pup. It is made from fiberglass and aluminum stainless steel. If you’re interested in one, give Judson Beaumont a holler and maybe he’ll make you one. www.straightlinedesigns.com

{28Entertainment} Filmed In Rhode Island
HACHI: A DOG’S TALE Premiers September 26th
Filmed in Bristol and Woonsocket, RI, “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale,” starring Richard Gere, Joan Allen and Jason Alexander is a heart-rending tale based on a true story. The film chronicles the tale of a man (Gere) who’s loyal pooch named Hachiko dutifully greets his master at the train station every day when he returns from work. Once day, the man dies but the dog continued to await the return of his master at the railway station every day for 10 years. Hachi’s devotion winds up touching the soul of everyone at the station who hears the dog’s story. Directed by Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallstrom, who’s movies include 1985’s “My Life as a Dog,” 1993’s “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” and 1999’s “The Cider House Rules”, the film never had a theatrical run in the US, playing mainly in the UK and Japan. Gere had no explanation as to why the critically acclaimed film was not booked into U.S. theaters, but said, “We’re all really thrilled that Hallmark Channel stepped up to put this movie on television so it can finally be seen by everyone.” Don’t miss this beautiful story on the Hallmark Channel, Sunday, September 26 at 9pm.
WedgeWorks ready to unleash ‘Monster Dogs’ Chris Wedge and his WedgeWorks banner have dipped into their discretionary fund to pick up “Lives of the Monster Dogs,” a postmodern “Frankenstein”-style novel by Kirsten Bakis. Adam Kline is on board to write the screenplay with Wedge, best known for directing “Ice Age,” who is eyeing it as his live-action directorial debut. “Dogs” revolves around a group of soldier dogs genetically engineered by mad Prussian scientists hiding in a Canadian village. The hyper-intelligent dogs, who walk erect and use voice boxes to communicate, revolt against their masters and, dressed in 19th century formal wear, show up in modern New York. The book is told through the eyes of a NYU student who becomes the chronicler of the dogs’ glamorous lives, which, as they revert to their animal states for longer and longer periods, turn tragic.

OOGY:
The Dog Only A Family Could Love written by Larry Levin
In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen--one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue-ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy’s charms, and decided to take him home. Heartwarming and redemptive, OOGY is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him “Oogy” (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own. Maya is a 2 year old American Bull dog who was brought to PARL because she is a bit of an escape artist! She kept escaping from her owners backyard and became too much to handle. She is a very strong girl, who just wanted to play! She would make a great activity partner, or addition to an active family, as she has lots of energy!
Cleo is a very sweet pittie girl who was originally transferred to PARL from Providence Animal Control. Her new owners will need to leave Cleo in the crate when they are not supervising her until she gets the hang of house training (PARL will provide a crate for Cleo to go home with!). She is a super sweet, tolerant girl who just loves everyone.
Bentley is a sweet and energetic 2 year old Pomeranian mix who was surrendered because his owner had a new baby and did not feel she had time to properly train him. Bentley is a sweetheart, but he will need some work on training. Bentley would do well with a crate to keep him from chewing things he shouldn’t. He is working on house-training.
Tony is a very sweet 2 year old lab! He is strong and loving and would do best in a home with children 12 and older and no cats. He does get along with other dogs, and might need some work training.

She enjoys being held, jumping in anyone’s lap, and just chilling in her doggie bed. She knows her name, comes when called and walks perfectly on the leash.
Gus is a 2 year old neutered Lab/Hound mix. Gus is gentle and loving and seeks a person or family to truly call his own. He would prefer to be in the company of another dog and craves bonding closely with someone. Gus has a moderate energy level but will require obedience training and consistent daily exercise.

Help Save Lives... Adopt A Pet Today! Charlestown Animal Shelter - Sand Hill Road • RI • 401.364.1211
King is my name, and a more fitting name there’s never been! Look at these gold eyes to match my patches of gold fur. How could you not fall in love? I’m kind of sad because I was left alone in an apartment because my family couldn’t take care of me anymore, but I’m such a nice mellow cat I figured I’d just make the best of the situation.
Molly’s a young cat with stripes and patches and a heart filled with love! She was brought to the Shelter as a stray just covered with fleas. For her first week or so, she was hesitant to trust people, but now that the fleas are gone and she’s starting to fill out, she butts your hand if you talk softly to her. She’s recently learned to eat canned food.
Sunny got picked up by the Police one day, and then the next day, his family got rid of him. He once came in the house and was the beloved family pet, but when they moved to a smaller house, Sunny became an outside dog. He is 7 years old and is a big loveable Golden Retriever. Sunny needs a forever home with a fenced.
Jackie is the sweetest dog ever. She was left for 5 days in a crate in a third floor apartment with no one checking on her! Fortunately, a neighbor alerted us of this situation and at that time, the owners decided to turn her over to the Shelter. Jackie loves to carry her toys around with her and loves attention.

Mac is a sweet Akita, Chow Chow (mix) and is appx. 1-2 years old; he weighs 60 pounds; is already neutered, current on all vaccinations and, while he does have a slight case of heartworms, he will be able to start treatment here by mid-July so should be all ready to travel to his new home the middle to end of August.
Mokey was found tied up and abandoned in front of a local animal shelter. He was brought to one of our volunteer’s vets who called to ask for help in placing this sweet boy. Mokey is now fully vaccinated, neutered, 1-2 years old, weighs 58lbs, and so far has been good with all other dogs that he’s encountered.
Scout is a 10 month old basenji-shepherd mix who is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, 41 lbs, microchipped and sweet as can be!!. He loves other dogs and we think that although he’d do fine as an only dog, he really would make another playful dog very happy as he engages in play all day long with his foster brother and sister.
Kimmie is Australian Shepherd (mix) who loves everyone she meets and will happily throw herself on the ground in hopes of persuading people to give her belly rubs. Kimmie gets along great with our three dogs and would do well in a home either with or without other pups. She is spayed and up to date on vaccinations.

Madeline is a bit on the quiet side, but don’t let that prevent you from seeing the gentle and sweet cat that I am. My kittens have found their new homes, so now it is my turn. I lived with other cats, so with a slow introduction I would be fine as a cat companion.
Stephanie is a sweet and gentle, I love attention and rub my thanks with each pat. I was rescued by my foster mom, for I needed a kind and compassionate place to stay. I would love a home with lots of joy and companions of my own. I hope that is your house.

Housetraining Continued from page 19
Housetraining Trouble shooting
You take the dog out, but nothing happens:
• Be patient. If nothing happens after 10 mins or so, come back in, keep the dog on leash, and go back out 10-15 mins later. Repeat as needed.
You take the dog out but it runs around and plays:
• Make sure they are on a leash about 6ft long. • Make sure there are no play triggers around, such as toys, pets, children, etc. • Ignore the dog. Don’t talk to our play with him, don’t yell at him, don’t point out the poop. • Just walk back and forth and don’t make a big deal about anything – dogs can be easily distracted and love to get attention so if you give him attention he’ll never figure it out!
You keep finding accidents: • You are not supervising properly.
The dog has accidents inside the crate: • If it’s too large, the dog can have a potty area and a sleeping area, so make sure the crate is the right size. The dog should be able to comfortably stand up, turn around, and lie down. • If your dog goes to the bathroom and gets it all over himself, take the dog to the vet to rule out medical problems. • If medical issues are ruled out, contact a trainer or behaviorist for advice. • Do your best to determine if the dog was kept for long periods of time in a cage where it was forced to urinate and defecate where it sleeps. This makes housetraining more difficult and advice from a professional may be required.
Your dog cries in the crate in the middle of the night:
• Your dog may be telling you he has to go to the bathroom, or he may be begging for attention. • Check your journal to see if it is time for a break. • If you’re not sure, take him directly outside, but do not acknowledge him. • If he goes to the bathroom, quietly acknowledge him, briefly, to avoid teaching your dog that midnight potties are fun. • If he doesn’t go to the bathroom, back into the crate and back to bed. • Make sure you dog has been adequately exercised before crating for the night. • If you are certain the dog isn’t full of energy, doesn’t have to go to the bathroom, and is healthy - he may need to just cry it out. • If the dog seems to be panicking, digging, destroying bedding, etc. – contact a behaviorist or trainer right away as you may be dealing with separation anxiety.
You just can’t seem to keep an eye on the dog:
• Keep the dog tethered to you at all times or gate him in an area with you. • Restrict home access with gates and closed doors. • If you can’t keep your eye on them, they should be crated – such as at night, when you are gone, etc. • Do not let the crate become a substitute for training! Dogs need plenty of exercise and social interaction.
