Spending a weekend at Animal Ambulance My weekend at Animal Ambulance… …was most probably the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life! I know all shelters do their best to provide for all the animals wants and needs, but this was a different experience. From the moment I spoke to Maria and she told me that her 80 dogs roam free and do not stay in kennels, it was very comforting but also a worry because how on earth does a person handle 80 dogs all with their own personalities…it must be a mad house! And it was! I felt the way I feel every time I go to a shelter…all 80 dogs barking with excitement, yet it was not loud enough to overwhelm my anxiety. Then the silence broke, louder than anything I have ever heard…I was shocked to experience the silence with 80 dogs in one house so quiet and so comfortable on their own. I could feel the calmness, a calmness I have never felt in my life. Every dog picking a place on the couches or on the blankets laid out for them, a sense of happiness I did not expect. Puppies running around, playing carelessly as if it’s their own little heaven. Then it was time to meet everyone outside and I quickly realized it’s the chicken we have to be scared of! At first I thought this was a very talented chicken doing a little sideways dance, till it tried pecking me! And from that moment the chicken provided us with excitement and laughter every time we would come across its path! We NEVER left the room without a broom or a stick. The donkeys, pony and goats were so enchanting and loved the cuddles. I noticed that they couldn’t wait to get into their sleeping quarters, which was weird as I thought they would love to stay outside for as long as possible. But as soon as that door was open each and every one of them couldn’t wait! Where in your life can you say you have ever seen such well-behaved animals? When I looked inside it became very clear why they love being inside, as even I wouldn’t mind sleeping in such comfort! I have met the best people in the world!!! I harbour so much respect for Maria, as she dedicates her life to these animals. She has been slammed with criticism, as people will always want to imagine they know better than the person actually putting the effort in…yet, she still stands strong and allows people to say what they want for at the end of the day it’s the animals she is fighting for. It takes a strong person to stand for what they believe in and courage to face the brutality of humans. I look up to her be-

cause I know it would break me to do what she does every day! Katia is first of all, the BEST cook in the world! The food was amazing! She’s a wonderful girl and has such a free and happy spirit – it’s amazing to see her eyes light up when she speaks about each and every personality of every animal on the plot! Her mother (Maria) raised an angel! Then Barend…I wish we could send our other halves to him to teach them how to be a REAL gentleman! You can ask him anything at any time and is always willing to help…without complaining! They were just the most wonderful people to be around.
I paid R750 for the weekend, and yes it’s a lot of money! Was it worth it…ABSOLUTELY YES! I went there thinking I’m going to help out, but I walked away with lessons learned and love in my heart that you can’t put a price tag on. No amount of money can buy the love I’ve been given, and yet it would’ve been given freely. I paid the money in a heartbeat to help out and now I feel thankful that God has given me the chance and opportunity to be able to give and help out, because the reward was overwhelming! I left on the Sunday, not actually realizing the full extent of this blessing and got home and felt an absolute hole in my heart without the animals and people around me…I just broke down and cried! I can honestly say, this has been the biggest blessing in my life to have come across Animal Ambulance! Thank you Maria and team, and know that I appreciate everything you do for the animals and I have a great respect for you! Love you guys, Linda Magor xxx (25th October 2012)

JANUARY 27 2014 What a sad way to start the week, we have been asked to take this little one into our home and make him better. Starting the day with tears and sadness, we have named him Jamie. For now the mange needs to be treated and he has had shots and cortisone and then another trip to the vet to see if there is anything else wrong. He is skin and bones with a look in his eyes that says he has given up. Apparently somebody found him outside his house. I really am filled to capacity with dogs especially as the future of the plot is uncertain, ‌‌ but Jamie needs us.
JANUARY 29 2014 Hi everybody, this is Jamie here. I just want to show you what my new life is like since I have arrived at Animal Ambulance. There is food and water whenever I want, I can sleep on Aunty Maria's bed and she cuddles with me. I get lots of love here and they tell me that I am special, I never knew that. As you can see I am very content and happy and I know soon I will look beautiful with lots of fur before the Winter is here. Aunty Maria kisses me all the time, which I don't like very much but I guess I must be cute or something
You must be tired of me already and I hope I'm not a bother, but since I got my voice back I have so much to say! So after my bath Aunty Maria waited for me to dry and took me outside. AND GUESS WHAT!!! I watched Bazil dig this big hole...He's good hey I think soon I will digging big holes too when Aunty Maria is not always watching me He then put a big pole in the hole... I kept hearing Aunty Maria call it a stable heee heee heee but I don't think she knows its actually called a pole heee heee heee Night night my lovely kind friends that have shown me so much love this week!
FEBRUARY 4 2014 Wooohoooo my friends!! It is Jamie again. Aunty Maria says my hair will grow quicker if I just lie here and relax, which is just silly, don't you think? But I just wanted to show you my new face hair people, new face hair!!! Soon I will have plenty of hair all over my body, then you won't even recognise me! I'm so excited, think I will go show the other furkids my new hair!!
FEBRUARY 5 2014 Good morning everybody, Jamie here again. Aunty Maria has left this big bowl of food out..I think it must all be for me, not for the others! What do you think? I think if I stand with my paws in the bowl, then everybody will know it is mine hee hee! Aunty Maria says I need to eat to get better and more handsome, but what she doesn't know is that I don't need to be told, I like getting food every day because before I got to Animal Ambulance, I didn't have any food but now I have food, lots of new friends, a lovely soft bed, cuddles and I even get treats!! Got some eating and napping to do, so will say hello again later………..
Jamie here, not happy Aunty Maria did not forget about the bath Grrrrrrr! Does she ever forget anything I wonder. She also gave me another tablet she said it's for worms but I never saw any worms here at the house so why do I have to take it and not the worms?? I don't know how some humans think! I put up a bit of fuss, so while Aunty Maria was bathing me, Bazil had to hold me Hmmpphh!! Going to bed early, just in case I have to bath again, so night night everybody

Good morning friends! Do you still recognise me when I pull my ears back? Hee hee, thought I'd try and fool you. Aunty Maria said this morning when I put my ears back like this, you can see all my new hair on my face so she said when I have more hair, she will plait it for me. I have no idea what that is! As long as it involves a treat, that is fine by me! Have a good Monday everybody!

MARCH 2014 Saw a fabulous and supportive campaign to raise awareness for the plight of animals being rescued by Animal Ambulance . The dynamic and very active Facebook page came alive with stunning pictures of supporters' pets—many of whom were rescue animals themselves. In a country where so many suffer needlessly—and there is such violence and misunderstanding, it is heart-warming to find a place such as Animal Ambulance. To be able to give support —either in word or deed, by donating or just telling people about the awesome work this group of dedicated people does, gives those of us who are not willing to open our homes to 150+ animals and dedicate our lives to the cause, the opportunity to actively share in the story — Thank You to Maria and Animal Ambulance for this..
