4 camp woodlands

A community-based design project for the Girl Scouts of America, Central Maryland Branch. Students worked both individually and collaboratively to document the existing conditions, propose a new site plan and campsite, and design a cabin, main lodge, and new gateway for Camp Woodlands.

Program requirements included cabin designs for troops of 8-16 girls, the arrangement of campsites within the larger context of the camp, a main entrance gate, and a proposal for new lodges to house administrative staff and kitchen and dining facilities for up to 250 campers.


Cabin In response to the sylvan setting and existing conditions, Davey Crocket—Eastern Camp was designed for the more knowledgeable, adventurous camper. Situated between the waterfront and the ravine, the cabins radiate outward from a central fire-pit that allows for optimal views of both land features. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese architecture, each cabin leaves a light footprint in the trees and offers campers the opportunity to customize their sleeping quarters through a series of sliding panels. Altogether, Eastern Camp can accommodate up to 48 campers, with each cabin ideally hosting three campers but capable of providing arrangements for up to 12.

The cabins in Eastern Camp are based on the Girl Scout ideal of self-reliance. By keeping the cabins small and limiting the ideal number of campers per cabin to three, the Scouts are given the opportunity to experience camping on a more personal level. The idea of self-reliance is further emphasized by a series of sliding panels that separate the interior from the exterior and that sub-divide the interior into three separate, but equal compartments. In the Eastern Camp, cabins are arranged to take full advantage of passive solar heating, natural cooling, and views of the waterfront. Each cabin is placed to respond to the context of the site, following the natural curve of the landscape. Upon entering the campsite, campers are welcomed by a centrally situated fire-pit. Limiting the campsite to a single centralized fire-pit reinforces the Girls Scouts ideal of community and togetherness. Also, located in the northwest corner of the campsite is a winterized pavilion with a small kitchen and storage space; a revamped bathroom and shower facility is located at the existing shower house, just north of the campsite.


Lodge

Above the ravine and across from the per-existing Lamb Lodge, the proposed new lodge pulls inspiration from traditional Japanese architecture to create a series of buildings that wrap around a centralized outdoor gathering space. The structure of the main interior gathering space is kept as light as possible, optimizing northern views into the ravine as well as southern views into the woods. The space is anchored by two heavy fireplaces, placed on the west and east ends of the space. Both the northern and southern walls are composed of wide glass doors, which, during optimal weather, can be opened to allow for the space to extend to the outside. An interlaced network of wooden struts overhead helps to define the space.

urban oasis WASHINGTON, DC SPRING 2015 CRITIC: BRIAN KELLY

Located near 14th NW and G Street in Washington, DC, this boutique hotel began with a study of building facades, and focused on how a new structure may interact with the existing urban fabric. The hotel was developed from a rigorous program, which called for

a restaurant (3,000 sq. ft.), kitchen (2,500 sq. ft.) and retail space on the main level, as well as a fitness center, multipurpose rooms of various sizes, and a balance of about 100 long-term and short-term hotel rooms, all to be contained within the legal FAR of 8.5.

The design aimed to create an outdoor oasis in a dense urban environment and required thorough exploration of program placement. Spreading the podium’s requirements across three floors instead of two allowed for a multi-level courtyard to be placed on the ground and 2nd floors. To ensure maximum sun exposure to these two lower court yards, a sun study was conducted to help inform the placement, size, and wall height of the courtyards as well as inform the mass shape of the upper floors. Each hotel guest’s room has been carefully subdivided to help create additional rooms. The short-term rooms have been subdivided into sleeping quarters, bathroom, and living room, while the long-term rooms have been subdivided into sleeping loft, dining room, kitchen, and living room.

This project focused on exploring the convergence of form and space to design a research/museum from an assigned figure. Pulling inspiration from Miuccia Prada and a purse, spaces and movement strike a relation with one another that mimics the duality of Miuccia's personality and the cavity that is created from a purse. The end result is a rich dynamic relationship with the main staircase and the main gallery spaces.

Working with representatives from the Howard County Department of Planning, the Columbia Association, and the Owen Brown Village Board, a series of redevelopment schemes for the Owen Brown Village Center were created. Breaking up into three teams of three, each team worked closely with a Real Estate Developer to come up with program, square footages, and adjacencies for each team. This project implements a series of visible sustainable infrastructures to

elevate Owen Brown's village center as a model example for future redevelopment in Columbia, MD. The use of natural elements, like a canal running down the main shopping strip, walkable wet lands, and fruit bearing trees, help characterize and organize the site into distinctive neighborhoods. Providing residents with multiple unique experiences.

University of Maryland Solar Decathlon 2017 Denver, CO Fall 2016 CRITIC: Garth Rockcastle

38 UMD Solar Decathlon 2017

In Fall of 2017, the University of Maryland will present to the public a radically different vision of sustainable housing. This will take place as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon Competition; the University will be competing against 13 other teams from around the country and overseas. Our challenge is to use systems engineering principles to design, develop and build a house that generates its own energy and cleans its own water and waste in a manner that is fully integrated with the ecosystem around it. During the competition, the house will be toured by thousands of people eager to see the future of sustainable living in action. This is not a one-off publicity stunt – our efforts will produce a prototype for a generation of homes that can be designed, customized, and shipped anywhere in the world. Our goal is to create communities that

are good for the environment, not just less bad, using sustainability metrics that can be quantified in a rigorous way. Students from the schools of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Communications, Library and Computer Science, Engineering, and the Physical Sciences will shape the house design, provide essential technical analysis to the project, and ultimately assemble and operate the house for the SD 2017 competition. The work that follows is the culmination of ideas and effort put forth from a group of students and myself.


University of Maryland's 2017 Solar Decathlon submission represents a new paradigm for housing, one built on a regenerative model of sustainability, able to serve diverse communities, and be integrated with diverse natural ecosystems. The concepts, processes, and technologies demonstrated in this house are applicable to a wide range, densities, and formal configurations. The house is built upon providing a common 'DNA' for not just one house, but an entire range of community of buildings. Regenerative design principles guided the architectural design process used to give rise to the prototype; recognizing that local climate, individual choice, and culture influence the specific forms employed in the design. The homes essential "DNA" is rooted in the idea that, at its heart, there are systems and components that are efficiently configured to serve and support its regenerative agenda, and easily respond to expansion, update, and reassembly as needed.

This community-engaged studio brought together University of Maryland graduate students to the service of the Glen Echo Partnership for Arts and Culture in an exploration of possible futures for a public park with more than a century of rich and varied history. Founded in 1891, the park has functioned as many things; a National Chautauqua Assembly, amusement park, and arts and culture park. The Glen Echo Master-planning Committee, requested a re-envisioning of Glen Echo Park as an arts and culture park for the 21st century. This brought challenges of user experience, sustainability, accessibility, operations, wayfinding, economic viability, historic context, and the relationship of architecture to nature in the ecosystem of the Potomac Palisades. The project started off as an individual exploration

into the re-imagining of the park that led into three teams being created to re-envision Glen Echo Park. In the individual scheme presented, I sought to propose a new vision of Glen Echo Park that defined zones, established order, and utilized the character of the park to bring the park back to the local gem that it once was. In the group scheme, the comprehensive master plan focused on redefining the parks edges and reorganizing the entrances sequence to bring the park into the 21st century.

Proposed Structures Early in the design process it was decided that any new structure had to add to the character of the park. Employing this idea, the parking structure is tucked into the ground. So that on the residential side, a hill with white boxes popping out appears. While on the park side a normal parking garage is poking out of the ground. Adding to the character of the park, a new pavilion constructed out of simple 2x4 wood posts staked on top of each other helps bookend the east side of Glen Echo. The pavilion will apply passive design that allows it to fully open up during warm weather and close up during winter. With only the aid of a heating system, the pavilion will be able to be used year around.

Revitalized Structures The two top images on the left show a carousel that has been freed of elements that once inhibited it. This plan proposes the removal of the National Park Office and Bathroom building to allow the carousel to shine. The two bottom images on the left show the pottery yurts rehabilitated and relocated to better suite the nature of the structure. Looking to the past, the Bumper Car Pavilion is restored to its former glory. Ad-hoc obstructions that once blocked views have been removed to allow a full 360 degree unobstructed view of the park.

Glen Echo Market - Group This comprehensive master plan features a new market street along McArthur Boulevard and behind the Arcade Building. The reorganization of the service court into a dance plaza, the protection of the natural zone, improvements to the pottery studio and crystal pool, and capping the parking lot with a green roof for unprogrammed outdoor space or additional parking. This proposal calls for a significant increase in programmable space. Particularly of note are the increases of mixed-use space along the market street which is intended for artists to make, teach, and sell. Also of note is the increase in retail space at the ends of the market street which will both attract people to the park as well as encourage them to stay after events.

Market Street In this proposal, focus has been placed on refining the edges of Glen Echo Park. With the northern edge,first impressions of the park is improved by rehabilitating the vegetation, reorganizing the entrance sequence by rerouting pedestrian and bicycle travel to better engage the historic entrance, and activating the park's front edge by adding retail and artist space along the road. All this equates to a front edge that is more welcoming, inviting, and appealing for people. The historical entrance of Glen Echo Park currently consist of a service road and the backside of the Arcade building. The Arcade building was originally intended to act as the retail space for the park, but has ultimately failed for multiple reasons. By relocating this original activity onto the backside, gives a way to reactive the original main entrance of the park. With in the market street, after looking at some precedents, a pathway that offers plenty of space for pedestrian travel and activity to take place has been created. So one can imagine people walking by artist painting or people sitting down and enjoying a cup of coffee. The buildings have been structured to allow for maximum flexibility. So retail, gallery, and artist space can take place in one space.

West End & South Edge Over on the west end of the park, the edge that butts up against the Town of Glen Echo has been treated by introducing appropriately scaled artiest-inresident housing. On the northern edge of the site, the market street continues and forms a dialog with the retail space located across the street. The parking structure is a structure with a green roof that will double up as overflow parking when needed. This will allow for a 50 percent increase of parking spots. With the Clara Barton House, this proposal pulls away from it, giving the historical site some breathing room, while providing the park flex space for festivals and other events. On the southern edge of the park, two new spaces are created, pottery and glassblowing space and a new theater space. New two story yurts along the edge next to the current glass blowing cottage, will help slowdown the flow of storm run off and redirect it to a new retention pond. This will also allow for a unique studio experience that allows artist to work on the lower level, while visitors can view artiest work and view artiest as they work on the upper level. The existing Crystal Pool site will be reused for a new black box theater that will slip under the current play ground and increase the play space. The historical parts of the former Crystal Pool will be integrated into the design of the building. The new retention pond will help collect and mediate run off, while also offering opportunities for water management education through signage.
