Understanding of Arowana

Arowanas are freshwater bony fish of the family Osteoglossidae, also known as bonytongues. In this family of fishes, the head is bony and the elongate body is covered by large, heavy scales, with a mosaic pattern of canals.

There are ten described living species: three from South America, one from Africa, four from Asia, and the remaining two from Australia.

They are popularly known as ‘Dragon Fish’ because of their close resemblance to the Chinese dragon and the ancient Chinese Emperor himself

Because Asian Arowanas are protected by by the Convention of International Trade and Endangered Species (CITES) as an endangered species, the trade of Arowanas is limited which in turn increases the value of Asian Arowanas which are much more expensive compared to South American, African and Australian Arowanas. The four species of Asian Arowana are the following :- the green is the most common variety, found in Indonesia (Kalimantan and Sumatra), Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia

- the red-tailed golden is found in northern Sumatra, Indonesia - the gold crossback, blue Malayan, or Bukit Merah blue is native to the state of Pahang and the Bukit Merah area in Perak, Peninsular Malaysia - the red, super red, blood red, or chili red is known only from the upper part of the Kapuas River and nearby lakes in western Borneo, Indonesia.

The species of Arowana that will be bred under the scheme is called the Highback Arowana which is a cross between the red-tailed golden and the gold crossback This specific breed was chosen because of the quality and colour of its scales and its hardiness under captive breeding conditions
