Dave’s Desk e cattle business has all the indications of having a good year in 2011. Calf prices were up this fall to where they haven’t been for quite some time. CanFax reports that the bull cull was up eighty some percent over the previous year. Simple cowboy math says the spring bull sales this year should be strong. Make sure you are prepared. It is always a good idea to be in contact with your bull buyers during the year to see how your bulls have worked. If you haven’t chatted with them, it may not be too late, they will likely appreciate hearing from you. I hope everyone had a great holiday season, and all the best to you and your family in the New Year! is past fall the Angus business in this country has had many very successful sales as you will read in the Auction Block reports. Both production as well as dispersal sales have been very well supported. In many cases new breeders are putting together breeding herds from these sales.

Louis Latimer - Obituary
Louis Taylor Latimer It is with great sadness that the Latimer family announce the passing of Louis Taylor Latimer on December 21, 2010, following a brief illness. Louis is survived by his loving wife Jean, their children Linda (Doug Henderson), Gary(Jacci), Marlene( Ian Harvie) Nancy Latimer, Bryan (Annette) and Elaine(Greg
Urwin), 22 grand children and 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister Mary (Jim Buzzard), brother Marvin (Mary) and sister-in law, Jeannie Latimer and predeceased by two brothers Carroll and Norval. Louis was born on February 13, 1923 on the family farm near Bowden, AB. He attended the Nesbit School and at the same time started his business career by trapping weasels, muskrat and coyotes until he had enough money to buy a Shorthorn heifer, which started a fabulous career of breeding purebred seedstock in four breeds, Shorthorn, Polled Hereford, Gelbvieh and Angus. Louis married Jean Winter on December 3, 1945. Their marriage was a partnership in both love and business. Together they raised six children and successfully built the Remitall herd. In 1954, Louis and his brother Carroll formed a partnership that continued for twenty years. When they dissolved their partnership in 1976, and he formed a partnership with his two sons, Gary and Bryan. During the period 1960 to 1972 Louis & Jean, Carroll & Jeannie purchased the John Deere business “GreenLine” in Olds.Louis was very
active in the Olds Agricultural Society, and twice had the honor of being President. Louis was active on many different boards, including the Calgary Stampede, Canadian Hereford and Shorthorn Associations. Louis has received numerous awards during the years including: Hall of Fame at Nile Exhibition 1979 (Billing, MT); Canadian Livestock Man of the Year 1987 (Denve, Co); American Shorthorn Association " Builder of the Breed" (Omaha, NB); Canadian Hereford Association Honor Roll 1988; Alberta Angus Association Breeder of the Year; County of Mountain View Family Farm Award. Honored as a Pioneer by the Beef Improvement Federation on July 3rd, 2008. The Remitall name and its bloodlines are known world-wide and have made great contributions to the cattle industry. Louis strongly believed in his family and attended many 4-H shows, Junior Livestock shows, hockey, soccer games and many other events to show his support. He was always willing to share his knowledge of life with both his family and friends.
friend you could have. He affectionately summarized his feelings by saying, “But you had to learn to hold your ground with Louie.” Louie was a visionary and a leader. He definitely saw the big picture and more importantly he saw himself in the big picture. His leadership in the many areas of agriculture has been well documented. These were not “me” awards – they were leadership awards recognizing his personal contribution to his family, the Remitall Cattle company, his community and the many association he belonged too. While Louie believed in himself, he also believed in other people just as much - if they were willing to make a 120% effort. A management specialist said there are only 3 things you have to do on a consistent basis to accomplish 85% of what you are capable of or have the desire to accomplish; 1 Be on time, 2 - Do what you say you are going to do, 3 - Finish what you start. Linda, Marlene, Nancy, and Laurie learned a good lesson about on being on time. Remitall had twenty head of show cattle at the Stampede one year and the four girls showed up fifteen minutes late on show day. Louie fired them on the spot. Marlene said she had just Louis & Jean learned to drive and wasn’t sure she Wedding Day could find her way out of Calgary.
They were never late again on show day. In all my years of being around the show ring, I have never witnessed a Remitall animal entering the ring late. Sale day was no different. “Do what you say you are going to do.” In 1971 Louie and Walter Blume went to England and after assessing the situation, promoted an idea to the Alberta Hereford Directors that Louis & Linda as a marketing tool, “Why don’t we send some bulls to the Royal Show in Kenilworth England, to not only promote our genetics to the UK breeders, but to the world. You would have to attend the Royal Show in England to appreciate the wonderful marketing opportunity that exists to an extensive range of countries which were once part of the British Empire.Louie contacted the Saskatchewan Hereford Association and got there cooperation to send the polled bulls and Alberta would send the horned bulls.Loius identified an opportunity. He provided the leadership to get the job done and Canadian breeders both polled and horned reaped the benefits for many years, sending Herefords back to England, which was the birth place of the breed, was like taking coal to Newcastle. Unlike many so called marketing trips that waste Associations money, Louie saw the project through and did what he set out to do. The third thing a person must do is ‘Finish what you start’. One day Louie was running a swather and it was a terribly hot day. The air conditioner on the swather was not working properly and the sun was beating
Eulogy How do you capsulate the life of a person like Louie Latimer who lived for more than 87 years? Louie was born on February 13, 1923 on the family farm near Bowden, to Douglas and Florence Latimer. He took his schooling at the Nesbit School. Norval & Louis showing Shorthorn Heifers
His entrepreneurial spirit was evident at a very young age when he earned money operating a trap line that yielded weasels, muskrats, skunks, coyotes etc. until he had enough money to buy his first Shorthorn heifer, starting him on a career, as he pursued his passion of breeding the very best beef cattle possible. I believe Louie would agree that much of his success would not have been possible without his wife Jean at his side. Louie and Jean shared 65 wonderful years together. Recently Louie said to the Doctor in attendance “Just do what you have to do so that I can enjoy just one more day in this special relationship I share with Jean”. I met with most of the members of the family and there was some hesitation for someone to step up to the plate and share their feelings. However, Bryan bit the bullet and said, “He was the greatest father you could have. He was the greatest man he had ever known. He was the greatest teacher you could have and he was the best Page 8

though the windows on the cab making the interior temperature almost unbearable. This was in the days before walkie talkies and cell phones. Gary had said to Louie that when it gets to the point you can’t continue, signal me and I’ll get someone to come out and see if they can fix the air conditioning. Gary never did get a signal from Louie who was determined to finish swathing the field, but he did see Louie’s long underwear hanging over the barbed wire fence. Louie liked to garden and was proud of his garden and the fruit trees in the yard. The Dorran and Harvie boys learned the hard way what would happen if you had a fruit fight with crabapples off on the Louie’s trees. Dusty and Ryan came out on the short end of the stick as they went to Grandpa and Grandmas’ after school each day. The Harvie boys just didn’t come around until things cooled down. While the gardens and fruit trees were important, the bulls that were to occupy the pen just west of the house each year was even more important to Louie. One day Bryan and Richard were deciding which bull they should put in the pen. Having made the decision they shared it with Louie who made them aware that he was 2006 Farmfair Reserve Champion Bull Remitall H Rachis 21R
not in support of their idea and suggested they should change it. They held their ground and left. However on their return to the yard later in the morning, they found Louie had set up a target on one side of the gate to the pen and was taking target practice from the other side of the gate with his 22 rifle, as Gary said “practicing his war games.” Again they held their ground and the bull of their choice occupied the pen.
As Louie liked to do, he was out there combing the bull with a wire brush almost every day when the true potential of the bull began to develop; he took more than his share of the credit for identifying the contribution this bulls could make to the breed. I ended up at the same hotel as Louie in Regina one evening and he said he was picking up a bull in the
grave and rundle stone cairn with a brass plaque marking 6V’s grave if anything happened to the bull. It never occurred to me at the time that Louie was in any danger, he always seemed invincible. One afternoon I had the CHA Directors at the Alberta Hereford Association offices in Innisfail for a meeting and as we were breaking up about mid

morning and wanted to know if I would want to ride back with him and share the driving. I had learned previously that you could always learn something by being around Louie so I said “yes.” The next morning we threw our bags in the back of the the pickup and headed for Warnyca’s to pick up the Peanon Spidel 6V bull which Louie informed me was the highest priced polled bull ever bought into Alberta at that time. It was quite a scene as we left the Warnyca’s, as the bull completely filled the box on the ¾ ton pickup. With our suitcases were tied on the outside of the rack, we looked like the Beverly Hillbillies leaving for California with Ellie Mae, I mean Kathy Warnyca crying in the yard. We stopped for breakfast at the Husky on the east side of Regina and as Louie said, we would share the driving, I ventured to ask Louie if Remitall insured their livestock during transport. Louie said no. I took the wheel for the next leg of the journey and about 15 miles west of Regina the back tire blew out. I was concerned more for my own safety than that of the bull as I could visualize an insignificant wooden cross made from a caragan windbreak marking my

morning, I thought it would be an opportunity for them to visit Remitall. I approached Louie with the idea. I realized it was short notice and secondly we had planned to be back in Calgary during the noon hour. I was on fairly shaky ground especially convincing Louie that it would have to be a short visit, so I talked fast. As I hesitated and gasped for a breath to carry on, Louie looked at me with those penetrating eyes and said, “Mr. Perry (the prefix Mr. clearly identified you were in trouble) are you going to run the tour at Remitall or am I going to run the tour at Remitall? I replied, “You are going to run the tour at Remitall” To which Louie replied, “Good! You are staying for dinner”. Louie recognized that almost all agricultural products were sold as commodities and hence there was little opportunity to differentiate value. But Louie changed all that. It didn’t matter if you were selling Shorthorn cattle, John Deere machinery, Chrysler products, Polled Hereford, Gelbvieh or Angus cattle you had to market your product and more importantly yourself. Tribute given by Doug Henderson Louis would have appreciated this setting, he and Jean loved many of the events they attended here, both family and cattle related. Louis Latimer, a man with steady determination, he completed his goals and constantly challenged those around him to do likewise, especially his family. He was a man with unshakeable vision, insight and wisdom, all self taught. A keen observer of nature, livestock and people and he shared this with his family and friends, mostly through the stories he told.

whether it was in business, raising the family or in living a full life. Whenever Louis needed help or assistance, you could count on hearing the familiar, “Jean! Oh, Jean!”. It was a great partnership in all their endeavours. The two lasting bequests Jean and Louis have given their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; one is roots, the other is wings. Louis’ motto held true to the end, “Anything worth doing is worth doing well.” Louis, you have lived your life to the fullest, but we will all certainly miss you. You certainly did it your way!

Many people will tell you that it’s not “what you know” but “who you know.” ink about this for a moment – it is even more important that people “know you”. I have had the pleasure to travel to many countries throughout the world and there would always be someone asking about Louie and Jean. Every Association that Remitall has been associated with has honoured Remitall for the contribution they have made to the improvement of agriculture. Louie was very proud of the fact that the academics associate with the Beef Improvement Federation saw fit to honour him in 2008 under the Pioneer Award category. Recently Masterfeeds honoured Louie for his leadership in developing in cooperation with their company a line of cattle feeds sold as the Remitall Line. While operating their Chrysler dealership the District Sales Manager suggested to Louie that he should have his administrative and sales staff present themselves dressed with a white shirt and a tie. People like to deal with people who looked the part of being in business. Louie implemented what today would be referred to as a dress code and sales went up. Even more beneficial to Louie on a personal note was when he visited a farm Page 10
Louis was a family man, he and Jean raised six children, twenty-two grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, many with an enduring connection to the cattle business. Louis always set the bar high, set strong examples, there were no short cuts and he wanted things done right the first time. The two finest things that can happen to a man is to have a good wife and to know that he is accepted by the people he came from. His countless successes were made possible by his wife of more than sixty-five years, Jean. They supported each other and worked hard, side by side, to accomplish their goals;
that may have been having trouble with a piece of machinery, if he had a white shirt and tie on, they didn’t expect Louie to fix it and would gladly wait for the service rep to show up. Louie appreciated everyone who showed an interest in his cattle. However he had a strict set of principles. At the opening of one of his sales he made a very profound statement. Previously one of the animals purchased in a Remitall sale was sold to an American Breeder. The animal went on to be a National Champion, however the breeder had changed the animals name using their own herd prefix. In his opening remarks Louie said, ”If anyone in attendance here today came with the intention of purchasing an animal and then changing its name, please do not participate in the this sale” . “I put the Remitall prefix on each animal we raise with pride, and I expect them to wear with pride for the rest of their life. Louie received a warm ovation from everyone in attendance. Every person wants to leave a legacy to the generations that follow and you only have to see the family assembled here today to know that Louie can be very proud of the Legacy he has left to carry on in his absence. Firstly, he shared his ideas with his children, then with

his grandchildren and he was very proud of each of them. He took them on trips for education purposes, but he showed them that there was just as important other side of life which they should enjoy, good friends, good meals, accommodations with amenities such as swimming pools, the arts and when they were old enough, how to play bridge. Louie was a popular choice as a partner because they were sure to win. Dusty Dorran said the road trips were never boring, they were just long! Cole Harive was proud to show Grandma and Grandpa how he had mastered the art of displaying cattle to visitors and invited Louie and Jean over one afternoon. Prepared with his calving book and back up herd info, and lemonade for refreshment, they headed out. After a couple of cows and their calves being identified for Louie and Jean. Louie said to Cole, “Are you showing the cattle to me or to yourself?” Cole had positioned the cattle on his side of the vehicle. Louie was always teaching. I’ll bet Cole hasn’t done that since. Louie you were a man well respected and admired by everyone who came in contact with you. Louie will be missed by everyone who knew you. by Perry Wilkes

Favorite Sayings “If you own it an run it and have cattle on it - even if you owe the moon on it - its yours and you’re a Cattleman. That’s what folks’ll call you! They may call you a good one or a bad one, but they’ll call you a Cattleman.”

Quantum Genetics Inc Quantum Genetics Inc. is a Canadian based company focused on creating value through DNA testing. We work with the genetics department at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Gene discoveries that have an effect on animal production are validated through thousands of carcasses under Quantum Genetics feedlot management. Genes that affect an animal’s fat deposition, feed intake, rib eye size and yield grade and quality grade can be managed to create more value for the feeder. The packer then receives less overfed or underfed cattle. Quantum also has a bioscience department that offers DNA testing for grains. Some exports have to be free of genetic modified grain i.e. Roundup Ready. More recently Quantum is working to create a low cost parentage test for cattle. Recently Quantum Genetics has been validated to test for the following genetics: MA, OS, NH, AM (and CA soon). Quantum Genetics use of DNA differs from other agriculture tests offered. We don’t give numbers like an EPD, we give results of the animals genotype. This is the same as testing for genetic defects in that you
can make decision based on the results. An example of this is a “TT” cow of the leptin genotype will wean 31 more pounds of calf than a “CC” genotype cow. Both genotypes are homozygous so if you use a “TT” bull you eliminate the “CC” population in one calf crop. If you use a “CC” bull you breed out the “TT”s. In this case you loose the weaning advantage. In a feedlot application the “CC” genotype animals take approximately 30 days longer to get to 12 mm of backfat than a “TT”. 12mm of backfat is ideal for most slaughter animals. Alliances can be made with feedlots and cow calf operators to breed the right genotype. Quantum Genetics has been using real-time PCR detection methods for SNP genotyping since 2003. Real-time PCR combines the amplification, differentiation, and visualization (or quantitation) all in one process. The Real-time PCR process allows a more rapid and efficient result as compared to the older gel test method. 100 PCR tests can be done in an hour where it would take a day to do 100 with the gel procedure. Conventional genetic testing involves PCR
amplification of a target specific region of DNA, cutting the amplified product with an enzyme, and/or visualizing the DNA fragments on an agarose gel. The conventional method is low sample throughput and involves multiple processes. Real-time PCR uses primers to amplify a targeted region of DNA, just like in conventional PCR, but also utilizes intercalating fluorescent dyes or fluorescently labeled probes for visual detection. The real-time PCR detection methods employed by Quantum Genetics for alpha-mannosidosis (MA) and osteopetrosis (OS) testing have been validated by Dr. Jon Beever (University of Illinois and Agrigenomics). Quantum Genetics is also working on real-time methods to replace the conventional methods used to test for neuropathic hydrocephalus (NH), arthrogryposis multiplex (AM), and contractural arachnodactyly, or Fawn Calf Syndrome (CA). Real-time PCR detection is the preferred diagnostic method. Results can be achieved more quickly and tests are more sensitive and more specific.
Alberta Angus Message As 2011 approaches, another successful year comes to a close for the Alberta Angus Association. Some of the highlights of 2010 include our Hall of Fame induction ceremony in June, where SSS Red Angus, Cudlobe Angus and Mike Rodgers were inducted into our Hall of Fame. Our two successful Gold Shows, held at the Olds Fall Classic and Farmfair International, the latter of which being the National Angus Show, and the Steak Fry’s held at Angus influence calf sales across the province, were also highlights. The AAA hosted our Annual Meeting December 4th in Crossfield. Presentations were made to Wayne Robinson, our Honorary President for 2010, and Lazy MC Red Angus, our 2010 Purebred Breeder of the Year. The 2010 Commercial Breeder of the year is the Granum Colony, who will be receiving their award at the Calgary Bull Sale in March. Congratulations to all of our deserving recipients for these honors. We also
drew the winning ticket for our 2010 Donation Heifer, graciously donated by Remington Land and Cattle. The heifer was won by Mark Matejka of Ponoka. Congratulations to Mark, and thanks again to the people at Remington. Elections were held at the AGM to fill five new positions on the board. Elected to three year terms were Doug Domolewski, Darlene Glessman, Jaimie Jensen, Mat Bolduc and Brody Gardner. Thank you to these five individuals, and everyone who let their name stand for the election. I would also like to thank our five outgoing directors, Gail Wildman, Bill Dietrich, Rob Smith, Darren Hipkin and Dwayne Emery. These people provided an amazing amount of time and expertise to the AAA over the last six years, and breeders across the province benefited greatly as a result. If you see any of these five people around, be sure to show some gratitude for all their effort. An election was also
held to fill one vacancy on the CAA Board. Dawn Wilson was chosen to be Alberta’s newest Director, and I’m sure she will represent us well. Thanks to Lee Brown, who served one three year term on the CAA board, but choose not to seek re-election due to time commitments. After dealing with December weather for many years, a motion was passed at the AGM to change the AAA fiscal year end to March 31st, which will allow us to hold our Annual Meeting in the spring, starting in June, 2011. We will also combine our Hall of Fame Banquet and other member events at this time, to make for an exciting weekend. Look for details in the New Year regarding this event. All the best in 2011. Maritime Angus Message Hello all and I hope that everyone’s winter calving season is going well. The fall Maritime Angus events went very well and have us all feeling positive going into the winter. The first angus-influenced feeder sale at Atlantic Stockyards in Truro, NS brought prices 12 -15 cents higher than the average and the annual Angus in Action sale held in Nappan, NS had sharp increases from previous years and bidding was brisk. First round entries for the Igenity Angus Classic Futurity were due in late December with increased interest from new breeders. Page 36

Canadian Angus Association - CEO Message
C A N A D I A N A N G U S
Each new year should open with optimism and we should be able to look forward to good things ahead. Cattlemen, however, often find it difficult to be optimistic. Perhaps the memory of tough times, poor weather, and low prices remains with them longer than the times when everything went well. Depending on where you live, 2010 was quite different, however, from the Association’s position there is every reason to remain optimistic because Angus enjoyed a good year. In spite of declining cow numbers in the total Canadian cattle herd, Angus registrations remained strong and once again we led the purebred beef cattle sector in total registrations and commercial influence in 2010. Good Angus cattle continue to do well in the market and consumers continue to equate the Angus name with quality beef. This directly influences demand for Angus cattle and benefits our Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed participants and other quality branded Angus beef programs. Angus Beef We are proud of our Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed participants who are using our endorsement and logo to add value and identity to their quality Angus product. You are encouraged to check them out on the program website at www.rancherendorsed.com. There are lots of participants and locations where they market our product.
Other branded programs also seek tagged Angus feeders to add to their programs. We’ve heard of a large western retailer who has added an Angus line but has restricted it to the specialty meat counter because of limited supply. We hear from Fred Taylor, grading contractor at Cargill Foods, that “We see quality Red Angus carcasses on the grading stand but see very few identified back to Angus genetics so they don’t qualify for any Angus program.” We have a good program in Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed but still need membership support to grow it. Everyone has to tag their calves. It seems logical to support your Association program and help feed the demand for Angus beef. New Russian Member We don’t normally have an official signing of a membership application, but on November 23 there was one with photographs and all. Aleksey Kostin who recently purchased a plane load of bred Angus heifers has become our first active member from Russia. Mr. Kostin spent most of a day reviewing Association regulations and procedures and has asked us to allow him to register calves from his Canadian Angus animals until such time as they can develop their own registry. Gold Star Awards Do your children get performance awards at school? Some do, and our experience is that they do improve performance in many cases. A few years ago our Registry crew introduced a Gold Star Award for members who submitted properly completed paperwork. We have issued only 33 in 2010 but have been very pleased to hear from people who try to qualify. We’ve now made special magnetic gold stars with the year on them. Starting January 1, you will qualify for a 2011 Canadian Angus Gold Star if you submit a complete and properly filled in package of work. Anyone who is as good as a fifth grader will be able to get gold stars for their fridge starting in 2011 and continuing as long as they qualify. Tattoos Identification of registered animals is critical to the integrity of the breed registry in all breeds. Historically,
seedstock breeders took great pride in the quality of their tattoos and they have been accepted universally, even by brand inspectors in those regions that use them. This fall we were very concerned to hear of numerous illegible tattoos at major shows and that one of our major shows failed to have anyone check for tattoos. We need to improve our monitoring and anyone who knows their tattooing skills are lacking needs to find a mentor to help teach them. The Association will be following up on Director discussion groups and with all provincial associations and again at next year’s annual meeting. Show cattle represent a small percentage of our registered seedstock, but if we have problems with their tattoos it is logical there is a bigger problem in the rest of the herd. International Marketing The Association has actively promoted Canadian Angus genetics internationally and benefited from federal and provincial grant programs to offset some of those expenses. The grants have paid portions of travel costs and materials. We have just submitted a proposal for 2011–2012 that seeks assistance to help us primarily in Europe and South America. South America is especially important as we plan to have a good delegation at the Argentina mini Forum and tour in October. Our Junior Ambassador did a good job promoting Canada on her international visit to Denmark. Erika had them so impressed that seven members of the Danish Angus Association returned her visit and joined us at Agribition. They have written to thank us for the hospitality and assuring us they would be investing in semen and embryos from Canada as a result of the visit. Happy New Year With the New Year upon us, I encourage all Canadian Angus breeders to approach the year with confidence and optimism. We will be completing our year-end reports and the annual audit and reporting at provincial meetings and later at our annual meeting in Manitoba in June. Until then, on behalf of the staff of the Association, thank you for the privilege of serving you and please accept our best wishes for the coming year.
the Animal Pedigree Act, allows each Association to determine what a purebred means to them. Our “founding fathers” never felt the need to define purebred Angus because if it had a registration paper it was purebred. If it didn’t have a registration paper it was a commercial animal.
Why are we promoting wine? Actually we aren’t promoting wine but we do have a joint promotion with CedarCreek Estate Winery from the BC Okanogan. There are a number of reasons why. Beef and wine are a natural pairing for many people and CedarCreek has a quality product as do Angus producers. The other reasons all have to do with visibility and the benefits of increased name recognition. Angus breeders all know they can produce a quality product but the average Canadian is so far removed from the farm they often don’t know a beef breed from a dairy breed. The public memory can be pretty short and one of the basic requirements for any product to
remain known and appreciated is to keep your name in front of the people. The promotion with CedarCreek not only allowed us to partner with an environmentally friendly and quality wine product, it allows everyone purchasing a bottle of wine to know they recommend pairing it with a quality Angus steak. I guarantee you we are the only beef breed identified and promoted in wine stores in Western Canada. It’s one more way of keeping the Angus name in front of consumers.
Doug Fee
A S S O C I Ask the CEO A What is a purebred? T This seemed like a simple question because with our herdbook it is straightforward; a purebred Angus I closed is one that is registered and has a known pedigree on a registration form issued by the Association. O verified What complicates the issue is that other breeds have N breeding up programs and our governing legislation,

Canadian Angus Association - President’s Message
Greetings from cold and snowy Central Alberta. I know that there has been some extreme weather across much of our country the last few weeks. I am sure glad we raise a breed of cattle that can, for the most part, take care of themselves. A hardy breed and more importantly a hardy group of breeders are now poised to reap the rewards of perseverance over the last number of years. Calf prices were definitely up over the fall run and it was great to see our commercial friends with smiles on their faces at the auction barns once again. With the contraction of cow numbers over the last few years, I am getting reports of heavier and more consistent groups of calves as well. The more Rancher Endorsed tagged calves we can get out there, the better it will be for all of us in the long run. I recently read a book entitled “The Go-Giver” by Bob Burg and John David Mann that I received from a friend and colleague, Jan Moore, the other day. It is sub titled “A little story about a powerful business idea” and it had some powerful messages I would like to share. It talked about
success in business and that most profitable companies started with some other core value besides making money. The idea being that profit will take care of itself if you do the rest of the things right. The first rule stated that “Your true worth is determined much more by what you give in value than you take in payment”. For example, do you go back to the restaurant that you feel you got exactly what you paid for or some place that gave you just that much more: better service, larger serving, better taste? The second rule stated “Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them”. If you sell 50 bulls a year now, could you offer the same product and service with 100 bulls? If so you should be able to increase profits. I feel these thoughts could go a long way to making not only our businesses better, but our Association as well. The more value our association can give to membership, the more profitable our member businesses should be. The more members we can serve and affect positively, the more successful our association should be. Just some food for thought as we go forward into our provincial meetings and our annual meeting next summer. Become involved as members; visit with Directors on the Board, and the better off all our businesses should be. I had the pleasure of travelling across much of Canada in November and visiting the major shows across the country. First of all I would like to thank all the exhibitors for bringing Angus cattle out in front of the public and showing that we are the number one beef breed in Canada. The displays and cattle were tremendous, exemplified by the American Judge in Toronto saying how impressed he was with the cattle and that our neighbours to the south
would have an extremely tough time competing with us. Another example of our forefront in the industry is the numerous media requests while I was in Regina for Agribition. From local radio and television to a weekly television show in Mexico, people want to hear about Canadian Angus and be “tied on” to a winner. Our place in the national consciousness is something that we as breeders should be extremely proud of. Internationally our image has never been better as well as breeders from many countries are clamouring for our genetics. I would like to take this time to thank my family for making it possible for me to fulfill my duties as President of your Association. Mom and Dad have had to put in plenty of extra hours on the ranch and we have also had a lot of extra help from friends and neighbours too numerous to mention here. Extra thanks to my wife, Jill, who has had to take the lead on caring for our son Thomas who has been fighting an illness. Mother of the year is too small a title for the work she has put in. We have become involved with the Kids with Cancer Society over the past months and they have been a great support group for Kids and families dealing with cancer. This group has paired up with our Angus Foundation on the Angus Red and Black Baldy Fundraiser to help both very good causes. Both Assistant General Manager, Michael Latimer, and I will be offering up our shorn heads to the fundraising effort; check it out on the Canadian Angus Foundation website. In this holiday season I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday and all the best in the coming year. Sincerely, Kirk Wildman
Registration Fees: In order to keep your registration fees as low as possible, send paperwork in as soon as you can. The fee schedule is changing in 2011, but the two categories where you can get the most economical rate have not changed. If you apply to register your calves when they are less than 4 months old, the fee is still $15. If you apply for a transfer of ownership less than 60 days after the date of sale, the transfer fee is still $12.Another advantage to doing things sooner rather than later is that the memory will be better while things are still fresh! Kevin Lang, a Research Scientist at GenServe, recommends that when you are handling your animals, collect a hair sample using the recommended collection process, and store it in a clean unused envelope, clearly labelled with the animal's tattoo. Collected samples can be stored in a cardboard box indefinitely. Do not freeze the samples; keep them dry and away from any moisture. The animal's age doesn’t matter. You can collect hair samples from your newborn calves for future parentage or genetic defect testing needs. Remember to always get the paperwork from us when you are DNA testing an animal at GenServe for parentage, or at Quantum for genetic defects. Our paperwork should always accompany the hair sample. Spring 2011 National Cattle Evaluation Results By the time this article is printed, the Spring 2011 National Cattle Evaluation results will be available online. The EPDs are calculated using the performance data that you submitted to describe the breeding value, parental merit, or the genetics of your animals. Performance data had to be submitted by October 15th in order to be included in the evaluation. With the wet weather and late fall that we had last year, this deadline was a challenge to many breeders. If you could not make the deadline, please still submit your performance data. We will use it to calculate Interim EPDs for your animals until the next NCE.There will be several new selection tools available to Canadian Angus members this year. The new Carcass Weight EPD will describe the average expected progeny performance for carcass weight on the kill floor. Animals are discounted if they
are too light or too heavy; the Carcass Weight EPD can be used to monitor and balance the genetics that contribute to this trait. Canadian Red Angus animals will also receive Yield Grade EPDs which summarize the Carcass Weight, Rib Eye Area and Fat EPDs. The calculation of these EPDs is enhanced by ultrasound scanning data. Members are strongly encouraged to ultrasound scan their animals. This should be done between 290 and 440 days of age. For more information on ultrasound scanning please visit our website (www.cdnangus.ca/breed/ultrasound.htm). In addition to the new EPDs, Canadian Angus animals will now have their percentile rankings available under animal inquiry on our website: The numerical percentiles will be published with the
EPDs. For example, the animal above is in the top 5 percentile of the breed for expected marbling in his calves. His percentile rankings can also be seen in graph format by clicking on the graph icon on the top left. Percentile rankings for EPDs will give Canadian Angus members a quick snapshot of how the animal’s EPDs rank in comparison to all the Canadian Angus animals

Breeders who understand the program paperwork and EPDs stand to benefit from the Canadian Angus Performance Program the most. Join me for a workshop on EPDs or on Performance Program paperwork to learn how to get the greatest benefit from participating on the program. EPD 101 and Performance Program Paperwork workshops will be held throughout the year. If you are interested in registering for a workshop or require any assistance in regards to the Performance Program, please do not hesitate to contact me. The Canadian Angus Performance Program has grown considerably in the last two years. We have added several new EPDs to more fully describe your genetics, we can calculateInterimEPDs to better describe your genetics between NCEs, and we now havePercentileRankings published for animals enrolled in the performance program. If youwould like to join the Canadian Angus Performance Program, I invite you to contact me. Kajal Devani, Breed Development
We have also launched a program with GK Jim Farms in Okotoks, Alberta. GK Jim Farms is looking to purchase Angus tagged feeder cattle on an ongoing basis and will work to provide carcass data back to the breeder and the Association. This data would then be collected and used in Angus Carcass EPD calculations. Please feel free to contact me at the office for more details. Watch for Julia Lindsay and me out and about at various industry events where we will be selling Angus tags. At each location we will have an inventory of tags which means that you can pick up your tags for the year when you drop by our booth, or you can fill out an order form and the tags will be shipped that day from Edmonton and mailed to you. Check our website for exact locations and dates. Our commercial liaisons and any representatives from the Angus association can assist you with filling out a tag order form or answering your tag related questions. Just say hello when you see us at an event and we will be happy to assist you. Submitted by Cheryl Hazenberg
