Nando And The Judge

Hello everyone! Soooo much has happened since we last met, I don't know where to begin! I know! I will do what I always do and just get stuck in. he he! My education continues and when I was staying with the old wrinkly woman she spotted a local dog show and decided that not only should I go but I should enter a couple of classes as well! Not only that but my behaviour was to be witnessed by her daughter and niece! No pressure then! Have you ever been to a dog show? Don't! They're mad!! There's dogs EVERYWHERE! Not only that, there's dog mad people everywhere too. Well I hate to blow my own trumpet (not really ;-) ) but I was....what's the word....Brilliant! I kept my head down and my grrrr contained even when surrounded (and I mean surrounded) by 15 or so dogs! and we're not talking little dogs either....Rottweiler rescue were there and lets just say if you think I have issues think again. We looked around the stands (more of that later) and entered two classes...'Most handsome male dog' (naturally!) and 'best trick' (I keep telling you I'm clever!) I don't understand why but out of a class of 25 in the first I didn't win! I think the judge was having an off day, don't you?! For the second class I had to practice my 'sit, up and spin' routine (Pudsey look out) in

which I sit then stand on my back legs and do a 360 spin...I know clever eh! Well I did my very best and......we didn't get placed! The old woman was very cross as apparently it said 'trick' and the winners did 'obedience' stuff which she didn't think was on. Chillax! I know I'm the best, I don't need a rosette to tell me so! (although I was secretly a bit miffed at the time) Having been such a good boy, the daughter decided I should do another class...'fancy dress' - what was she thinking! She duly went off to said stands and came back can I describe it? a leopard print dog nappy with crossed bone emblem. (I kid you not) apparently I was going to represent The Flintstone's. Well I did let them try it on but sadly (not) it was too small. phew! that's a picture I wouldn't want printed! It's a shame I couldn't go home to my people with a rosette, I always have adventures when I go and stay with the old wrinkly one - such fun! as they say. What's that? The old ones are moving to a house with a garden? I hope that means I can visit more often! What's that, my people are saying... If I don't behave myself I could end up living there permanently? Oh dear! Now I face a moral dilemma don't I? What's a dog to do? he he Till next time, a 'high ten' (another clever trick) from an irrepressible Nando xx

Community news and what’s on Children From Barrs Court School Help Produce New Booklet On Barrs Court Moat The MOATivation group, who are working to preserve the 800 year old moat at Barrs Court, recently published their history booklet . Created by Moativation member Lis Jardine, with the help of 6-10 year olds from the school's Environment Club. It is an account, illustrated by the children, of the history of the moat site from the fourteenth century through to today. Barrs Court Moat is a scheduled ancient monument, hidden in the heart of a thriving community and within walking distance of popular local amenities such as Asda, Gallagher Retail Park and Aspects Leisure Complex. As well as being a valuable home to wildlife and an important educational resource for the school next door, it is a great community breathing space and play area. The booklet will be available free of charge from Cadbury Heath library or from Kingswood Heritage Museum. I asked Lis to tell me more: Barr's Court must have been impressive in its day, does it have lots of historical links too? The site has been occupied for at least 800 years; in its heyday in the late seventeenth century it would have been a very impressive building (perhaps a bit like Siston Court). The families who lived there were of high status, numbering bishops, MPs and famous scientists among their connections! The booklet we've put together traces the history of the estate back to pre-Roman times. How much more work is there to do and are you needing more volunteers? There is plenty to do at the moat! We would love to hear from anyone interested in joining in, either to help with work days in spring and autumn (litter picking, cutting back vegetation, pulling up reeds etc) Visit to find out more. What are the group's future plans and hopes? We're working with English Heritage, South Glos Council and Oldland Parish Council on several issues, including a replacement bridge, new bins, discouraging anti-social behaviour and in the long term dredging and relining the moat which is leaking badly. We also plan to hold regular work days and a summer family event every year. Our aim is to make the moat a safe and welcoming place to be, the pride of Barrs Court, enjoyed by everyone.

We need your help. We provide volunteer befrienders for disabled children in Bath, Bristol and North East Somerset and we need new volunteers to join our brilliant team of existing befrienders. If you can spare just two hours a week and want to make a huge difference to the life of a young person contact Janice today on 0117 9415868 or email Find out more on our website

‘A Dream Come True’ - Solid Oak French Wine Barrels Hand Crafted Into Fine Furniture And Planters By Bernard I recently visited Bernard’s new shop in Yate and saw for myself the beautifully crafted items that he makes from solid oak barrels and Bernard told me how this venture came about “I was a continental coach driver for many years. But the idea to make furniture from wine barrels I had already in my head since I made the first one approx. 35 years ago. I made a wine bar from a French wine barrel for myself (when I was still in Southern France) and a lot of people asked me where this had come from? Proudly I could say I did it myself. I have lived in England now for 17 years and I know people here appreciate individual and hand crafted furniture. I really love crafting wood and with the help of my wife I could realize my dream - to create unique pieces of furniture from used French oak wine barrels, such as wine bars, wine racks, multi-purpose cabinets as well as seats, tables, garden planters or dog kennels. All my products are hand crafted and solid, so you will have "friends for life". I also do bespoke design if somebody has a special wish. People are welcome to visit my shop in Yate near the train station, telephone or email me, or visit my homepage where they will find more photos and information.”

An Unforgettable Visit To Thermae Bath Spa Wallowing shoulder deep in crystal-clear warm spa water, steam gently rising in the crisp air, the sun highlighting the city rooftops and tranquil Somerset countryside beyond, my thought as ...’WHY did I wait so long to visit this treasure on our doorstep?’ It’s now eight years since Thermae Bath Spa opened and it’s a world away from my childhood memories of swimming in the previous Bath pool— the spa is an exciting amalgam of Georgian and new building attracting visitors from all corners of the Earth. According to legend, Prince Bladud was cured of leprosy after bathing in the hot muddy waters, and in gratitude he founded the City of Bath around the springs in 863BC. In AD43 the Romans started the development of ‘Aquae Sulis’ and it grew into the largest baths complex outside Rome. The health benefits of taking and bathing in the waters of course led to the growth and popularity of Bath in the Georgian era and Bath is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Containing over 42 different minerals, over one million litres of natural spa water flow from the three hot springs each day and the thermal water used in all four pools is at a wonderfully relaxing temperature of 33.5°C (92°F). This warmth is most welcome as you step down into the pools and the emphasis is definitely of slowly enjoying the natural waters, not on exercise or swimming. With a constant bath depth of 1.35m (4’5”), adult non-swimmers can be confident not to be out of their depth and can enjoy the spa experience as well as anyone else. There are three baths in the main complex, called the New Royal Bath. The Minerva Bath (named after the Roman Goddess of Health and Wisdom) is on the lower ground floor, together with the Hot Bath, which is housed in the restored Georgian building and surrounded by treatment rooms. The Hot Bath is solely used for treatments such as ‘Watsu’, a signature treatment combining elements of shiatsu massage and acupressure. The Open Air Rooftop Pool is above three more floors which host more treatment and massage rooms, steam rooms, a changing suite, as well as an elegant ‘Springs Cafe’ Restaurant. All the floors are linked by two sets of lifts and stairs.

Above: Cross Bath by Matt Cardy, Hot Stone Therapy by Rob Slade and left, the Minerva Bath by Dave Saunders

There is a dizzying choice of 40 spa t r e a t m e n t s available including hot stones, detox wraps, facials and massages. There are special spa and spa/tr eatm ent packages too as well as gift vouchers so I would definitely recommend you explore the website, pick up a brochure or telephone 0844 888 0844 to find out more. Treatments can only be booked along with a spa session. Separate to the New Royal Bath but just across the road is the bijou but stunning open air Cross Bath, an official sacred site. if you want to experience bathing in the natural warm spring water only (entry to the Cross Bath does not include access to the main spa facilities), then you might consider this an excellent option (the cost is £17 for one and a half hours spa session, not including towel, robe, slippers). Groups of 6+ should book in advance. Children under 12 not permitted and young people aged 12-16 must be accompanied by an adult/ guardian on a 1:1 ratio. A Spa session in the New Royal Bath starts from £27 for 2 hours (this would include access to the Minerva and rooftop pool, the steam rooms and the restaurant but not towel, robe or slippers). Spa sessions at the New Royal Bath on their own cannot be booked in advance unless you are a group of 8+. At weekends, groups size s limited to 12. Children under 16 are not permitted I tried the popular Twilight Package (from £42) which includes a 3 hour spa session, use of towel, robe and slippers and one dish from the Springs menu with a choice of selected wine/ beer/juice/water. I enjoyed a delicious and beautifully-presented Leek and Feta Quiche with dressed salad in the elegant restaurant. There is a full menu including vegetarian and GF options available on the website. There is also advice on the website about Medical Conditions and for anyone with accessibility difficulties or call the Reservations and General Enquiries Line on 0844 888 0844 Thanks to Thermae Bath Spa we have a fantastic prize of a Twilight for Two to be won by one of our readers this month—see below for details of how to enter.
