Who’s The Daddy? Nando is ! (well kind of)

What a difference a day makes! Tuesday I was my usual carefree unconcerned self. With nothing more taxing to think about than where the next walkies or the next bowl of food was coming - then WHAM! It happened! my world has been turned upside down. No longer can I think of just 'me' (ok sometimes I did think about them too) "Common Nand" he said "There's someone I want you to meet" and he dragged me off to his oldies house. No sooner was I through the door than there she was on her back with her legs in the air! It was a shock I can tell you! A puppy! I don't remember anybody asking me about getting a puppy! cheek! They have NO idea of the responsibility I now feel. It has aged me, honestly it has, I'm sure my hair is whiter. There she was 'saying' (In a way we doggies understand) " Don't hurt me" "can we be friends?" and "I'm only a baby, please be nice to me" and I'd only just walked through the door! I tell you what's a chap to do?! It took me a while to get over the shock and as I stood there surveying the four feet waving in front of me I couldn't help noticing how BIG they were. um.....if what they say is true, that you can judge

the size of a grown up dog from the size of the puppies paws - then it was immediately clear to me.......I need to get on top of her now! or else I may loose my position of Top Dog in this family which ain't gonna happen - no way - no how! I set about laying out some ground rules - with a 'nip' here and a' knock her flying' there - all in fun you understand - I don't think it's ever too young to start training a puppy do you? Of course if she's a slow learner it may take much longer than it did with me - we will see - I will do my best - I have some many things to teach (most of them naughty but cute & adorable as well he! he!) After half an hour of my 'lessons' the poor thing was worn out and we settled down to a snooze together on the rug accompanied by much "oooohing" and "aghhing" from our people. (Oh No! I suppose I will have to share them now! How could they do this to me without asking?!) I suppose it's not all bad, part of growing up, I will let you know my progress. At least we get to leave her there and go home to peace and quiet - which apparently is the best thing to do with babies. Gotta go now and read 'Puppy training made easy' by Itza Comonsenz probably nothing I don't already know but I don't want to let her down.....oooooh the responsibility.....aged I tell you AGED! Big lick from Nando

Forgive And Forget? By Andy Workman

I am touched that a reader has contacted me and asked me to cover the subject of forgiveness, a subject very close to my heart. Mark Twain once said “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it”. I humbly suggest he was correct. If someone hurts us, lets us down or turns against us, the only route to our own recovery is forgiveness. It isn’t of course our only option. We can, if we choose, spend our precious time mithering over their words and actions, reliving the hurt caused and in time increasing the impact they had on us. We can talk behind their backs, trying to gain the support of mutual friends or relatives in our “war” against them. We can even try to “get them back” by our words and actions, intending them equal hurt or worse. The question that has to be asked is, what do we gain by doing any of these things? The answer, if we’re honest, is nothing or even worse, more bad feelings for us. It’s easy to feel misjudged or let down but that’s life. We misjudge others at times and then fully expect to never have others misjudge us. We sometimes let others down in their expectations of us, but then get really cross when we’re disappointed. We just have to accept that life is not always how we planned it, but we can see a positive in that if we look in the right places. How often has something gone wrong for you, only to set off a chain of events that results in a much better conclusion that you expected from that which was planned? When a no-show by a friend has led to you meeting someone else unexpectedly and that has led to a positive result. It happens all the time. The difficulty with nursing our wrath against

someone is that it is self-destructive. I could sit and hate someone for hours but what affect is that having on them? None! In the meantime, my mood is falling through the floor, the stress chemicals and hormones in my body are damaging my body not theirs and I end up depressed, not them. Malachy McCourt is quoted saying “Resentment is like taking poison and waiting for the other person to die”. How true that is! Do you need to tell them they are forgiven? Not necessarily. Sometimes it’s easier to draw a line under the event and to move on completely, especially if there is potential for a repeat of the issue in question. If we were bitten by a fierce dog and we forgave it, would it be wise to step into its pen again? Just forgive and forget. If that means that distance is required to prevent them hurting you or you hurting them again in the future that may the best path to take. That doesn’t stop you sending love and forgiveness out to them in your thoughts. Who knows, it may create unseen bridges that will join your paths again when the time is right. Bad mouthing them behind their back reflects badly on your own character and destroys those bridges as quickly as they are built. Is it weak to forgive? Roman Emperors had the power of life and death over Gladiators with just the upward or downward turn of their thumb. Did they exert more power by deciding on a death or by having yet another man owe him the remainder of his life by showing mercy? Think about it! Forgive and forget. If you can’t do both – choose one! Look after you. Change Lives By Volunteering With Contact The Elderly Local groups in South Glos need you!

One Sunday afternoon a month, local older people and volunteers OF ALL AGES get together for afternoon tea. Our guests are aged 75 and over, live alone, often without family nearby, so the teas are a nice opportunity to leave the four walls behind. DRIVERS: You will collect a couple of older people, in your own car, and take them to a host’s home for tea, fun and companionship, where you will all enjoy the afternoon together. Men and women needed! HOSTS: Offer to hold a tea party for the local group in your own home once or twice a year (downstairs loo and easy access required). COORDINATORS: look after a local group, our coordinators are often drivers or hosts prepared to do a little more and run a local group – a few hours of admin a month to make sure the parties happen. Or would you, or someone you know, benefit from being invited as a GUEST? It is a simple yet very effective idea, and it gives our older guests the knowledge that someone really cares. Most importantly it changes lives - maybe yours too? Please contact: Helen 01225 873812, Regional Officer Helen.ker@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

Method Heat the oil until hot, add the sausages and fry for 4-5 minutes, or until browned but not completely cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside on a warm plate.

Preparation time 30 minutes Cooking time 1 hour Serves 6 Ingredients 2 tsp vegetable oil 600g/1lb 5½oz thick, good quality pork sausages 150g/5½oz chorizo, cut into serving pieces 1 medium onion, sliced 1 small chilli, seeds removed, flesh chopped 2 fat garlic cloves, finely chopped 75ml/2žfl oz white wine 400g/14oz tinned tomatoes, chopped 200g/7oz canned butter beans, or cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 2-3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 1 tbsp clear honey

22

Add the chorizo to the empty pan and fry for 3-4 minutes, or until crisp and golden-brown. Remove from the pan and set aside with the pork. Chorizo releases a lot of fat and I prefer to drain this off. Add the onion, chilli to the same pan and fry for 2-3 minutes, or until softened. Add the garlic and the wine then bring the mixture to a simmer until the liquid has reduced in volume by about a quarter. Add the chopped tomatoes and the beans then return the sausages and chorizo to the pan and stir well. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over a low heat, cover the pan with a lid and cook for at least 45 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and reduced in volume. If the sauce becomes too dry, add a little more water or wine. Just before serving, stir in the honey and season, to taste. Then serve over plain boiled rice or creamy mash, and sprinkle with parsley.

Community news and what’s on

Just Singing Out For Christmas And The New Year Learning three new songs in one day, and then performing them on stage, was a great achievement for ladies who attended a singing workshop run by Avon Harmony Chorus recently. Several of those attending had not sung since their schooldays, and were led through a series of warm-up exercises by Musical Director Alex de Bruin, and then learned the new songs in four part harmony, with members of the chorus music team. At the end of the day, they performed on stage at Alma Church in Clifton with the rest of the chorus. This was the second such workshop run by Avon Harmony, and there are plans for more in the coming year. The chorus is hoping to see several of those who came to the workshop joining them at rehearsals at Fairfield School in Horfield in January. Visitors, both experienced singers and novices, are always welcome to come along and enjoy an evening of singing with, and listening to, the chorus in rehearsal any Thursday. Avon Harmony is a chorus of women of all ages who sing a cappella in barbershop-style four part close harmony. Formerly known as Western Connection, and The Avonbelles, the chorus was formed in 1975, and has been singing in the Bristol area for almost forty years. COMMUNITY NEWS & WHAT’S ON Kingswood History Society On Tuesday 5th November, we had fascinating presentation about Yate and Chipping Sodbury during World War 1. Our speaker; David Hardill of the Yate Heritage Trust, Showed us the town maps from 1901 and 1920 for comparison. It was clear that the building of new factories during WW I had a lasting impact on Yate. The large industrial sites on Station Road re-shaped the old farming landscape. An Aircraft Repair Depot, RFC camp and Concrete Slab factory all helped to change the character of the area. As the war began, a detachment of the North Lancashire Regiment was billeted in Chipping Sodbury to supply security for the nearby railway tunnel and industry. A POW camp was also established and the German inmates were engaged in work at the concrete slab factory that provided construction materials for the camp and the numerous defence industry buildings in the area. After cessation of hostilities, the established industrial complex adapted to the needs of peace and was again needed in WW11. Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www.kingswoodhistorysociety.org, contact Dennis Noble on dn007g9122@blueyonder.co.uk or just come along to our meetings.

KINGSWOOD WINDS is a mid-level adult wind band. The purpose of the band is to enable adults to play with other like-minded people and to improve their playing. The tutor/ conductor is Chris Harris who has over 35 years’ experience. The band meets in Kingswood library every Thursday at 7.30 pm. Some instruments are available on loan. Anyone interested should go to the website at www.kingswoodwinds.com or just drop in at a rehearsal. Chris Harris 0117 9561950

FREE ADMISSION to the farm and FREE parking. Open every day of the year from dawn to dusk, so somewhere for families to enjoy without breaking the bank. All events are advertised on our website www.fogf.co.uk Unfortunately, NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED (except Guide dogs) as chickens run around freely and we often have new born lambs, calves, foals, piglets etc.

So Who Are The Friends Of Grimsbury Farm? The Friends of Grimsbury farm was formed in April 2006 when a group of local residents got together with South Gloucestershire Council to try to secure and improve this valuable community facility for the future. We were very concerned that this old farm was being neglected and that its full potential was not being realised. We were lucky to find a contact on the council that felt exactly as we did and who has worked closely with us since the beginning. We also have the full support of a number of local councillors who have openly thanked us for our efforts to make improvements. What do we do? From running the café and holding various events through the year to helping with improvements to the farm, campaigning for funding to simply promoting the farm, the work the Friends do is varied so there's plenty to get involved with, no matter what skills you have or how much time you can spare. Please email volunteering@fogf.co.uk . Want to get involved? Ever since the Friends first got together we have seen the need and potential for a café at the farm and this long held dream finally become a reality over two years ago The Barn Cafe is very important for the farm as it not only means that our visitors have somewhere to enjoy good quality refreshments (at a bargain price, we might add!) but it will be a huge opportunity for the Friends to raise much needed funds to plough back into the farm, as all the profits from the café will be used for projects at the farm. So if you want to help the farm go from strength to strength then all you have to do is sit about drinking coffee. It's never been easier! We are also needing more volunteers to help in the cafe with FOGF on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays—please email volunteering@fogf.co.uk if you would like more information.
