Community news and what’s on LONDON-based vintage jazz specialists The Dime Notes will be in Chipping Sodbury on Friday 15 September. They will be performing in the Town Hall at 7.30 pm (doors open from 6.30 pm) and tickets are available now from or from Cadeaux & Co, the delightful gift shop in Hatherell’s Yard. This lively ensemble brings to life the early years of the New Orleans jazz scene; it features Oregon-born pianist and composer, Andrew Oliver, clarinettist David Horniblow alongside guitarist Dave Kelbie and bassist Tom Wheatley. Following in the eminent footsteps of Jacqui Dankworth, Kenny Ball and Acker Bilk, the Dime Notes will continue the tradition of excellent live jazz gigs in Chipping Sodbury. Who better than David Horniblow, who is one of very few people to have performed in the bands of all three of the legendary 3B’s of British Jazz: Chris Barber, Kenny Ball, and Acker Bilk, to carry on that tradition? If you are a fan of jazz this is a great band to follow, their love and knowledge of jazz is clearly apparent, and the music is high quality, authentic and evocative of days gone past.

In 2017 Chipping Sodbury Music Society will celebrate its Platinum Anniversary, making it one of the oldest societies still meeting regularly in the town. It was founded by a group of music enthusiasts, who met in each other’s houses, and the Society now invites excellent Classical, Big Band, Jazz, Folk and World Music musicians to perform in the Town Hall. In 20172108 these will include the London-based Dime Notes Jazz Band, the Amadeus Orchestra, 4 Girls 4 Harps and the fabulous Mandolinquents. Join us to keep live music in the town for the next 70 years!

Inheritance Tax Law Update Two years since the Conservative’s manifesto for the 2015 election promising to “take the family home out of tax by increasing the Inheritance Tax threshold for married couples and civil partners” we have seen the biggest change in Inheritance Tax laws in recent times. Currently individuals can leave £325,000.00 and married couples/ civil partners have an allowance of £650,000.00 before inheritance tax is payable. In April 2017, a new “Residence Nil-Rate Band” was introduced which is specifically designed for homeowners wishing to pass the family or matrimonial home to direct descendants such as children and/or grandchildren. Although unlike the existing tax threshold which is automatically applied, there is a procedure which must be followed to claim this additional allowance which we can help with The RNRB will be introduced over a period of four years. In 2017-18 individuals will have an additional £100,000, £125,000 in 2018-19, £150,000 in 2019-20 and £175,000 in 2020-21, totalling £500,000 per person. Inheritance tax will be reviewed again in 2020-21 in keeping with inflation. This means that the existing NRB will be frozen until at least 2020-21. To see if you qualify for the “family home allowance” or If you would like the opportunity to meet with one of our friendly lawyers then please call 01454 509722 to arrange your free, no obligation meeting.

Report from the Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club Regatta The CSYC held its annual regatta on the mighty River Frome as it flows through Chipping Sodbury on a blustery day at the end of July, making conditions on the river challenging, particularly after some wet days preceding the regatta had swollen the river making it’s flow faster than usual. During the regatta, the CSYC hosted the local branch of the Red Hatters, to help these formidable ladies celebrate the life of one of their recently departed members, Gill Stevens. One of Gill’s wishes was to go white water rafting, but sadly, she was unable to fulfil this dream, so the Red Hatters approached the CSYC to see if was possible for her hat to sail along the River Frome instead, and the club instantly agreed, suggesting that their regatta was the perfect opportunity for this to happen. After quaffing champagne followed by a moving speech by Red Hatter Leader Morag, the ladies took to the bridge, and the CSYC Club Chaplain, Nick Cragg, launched Gill’s hat in a specially prepared boat. The Yachties are pictured by the river and the Red Hatters on the bridge as Gill’s hat floats by.

The sailing then began in earnest, and after some exciting races, Stuart Gregory, a redoubtable Yachtie from Lacok, triumphed, and in the Ladies section, Freda Vaughan from Yate, came out on top. Both are pictured (middle right) receiving their winner’s trophies from Commodore Rod Harris. The CSYC now looks to another challenge, when they take over The Mathew sailing galleon on a voyage this month along the River Avon in Bristol. The Ships Lookout, John Powell, The Lord Westerleigh, (pictured) is looking forward to piloting the ship through the floating harbour and beyond. He commented “I will not let my blindness hinder me, as I pilot the Matthew thought the floating harbour and under the Suspension Bridge, and will make every effort to maintain my proud 100% safety record of never losing a Yachtie overboard”. Community news and what’s on

Local Hanson Staff Helping Bee Conservation A group of six Hanson employees ran an educational market stall at Hatheralls Yard, Chipping Sodbury, to support the BumbleBee Conservation Trust earlier this year. The Trust was established because of serious concerns about the plight of the bumblebee. In the last 80 years bumblebee populations have crashed and two species have become nationally extinct while several others have declined dramatically. Hanson’s employees were on hand during the day to inform market visitors about the Trust’s activities as well as how to go about creating bumblebee friendly gardens at home. There were educational fun activity leaflets for the kids and bumblebee keepsakes for sale. The community also contributed generously to the donation bucket. In addition to the market stall day, the Hanson team created a Bumblebee friendly garden at the company’s office at The Ridge which employs over 200 people in Chipping Sodbury. Hanson UK is a corporate sponsor of the BumbleBee ConservationTrust.

Bluebird Care aims to make Yate & Sodbury Dementia Friendly! There may not be a cure for dementia yet, but it certainly is possible to live well with the disease. What makes the biggest difference is the way people interact with you. This starts at home but also includes people you might bump into when out and about, like shopkeepers and bus drivers. Our Recruitment and Development Manager, Miss Sam Brown, is aiming to train the whole of Chipping Sodbury High Street to be "Dementia Friends" by Christmas, before moving onto Yate Shopping Centre in the New Year. She made such an impression at the training to become a Dementia Friends Champion that the Alzheimer's Society asked her to join forces with the Dementia Action Alliance, which is seeking to make the whole of South Glos Dementia Friendly. If you would like to be trained by Sam to become a Dementia Friend, please call Bluebird Care on 01454 323 624 for more information. The first session will be in October. For now, if you would like to become more Dementia Friendly, here are some quick tips: Divert instead of Reason Distract instead of Shame Reassure instead of Lecture Repeat instead of saying "I told you..." Reminisce instead of saying "Remember?" Praise instead of Condescend Reinforce instead of Force Just make things fun! For information on dementia care, please contact Bluebird Care on 01454 323 624.

Double celebration for local estate agents Bundy & Bond Bundy and Bond, who have their base in Rounceval Mews, recently celebrated winning gold in the British Property Awards for Chipping Sodbury. The awards judge estate agents based on their customer service. ‘I’m so proud of my team.’ says Tina. ‘We pride ourselves on giving excellent customer service and it’s so amazing to be recognised for it.’ Bundy and Bond recently celebrated two years in business. Earlier in the year, they moved to new premises in Chipping Sodbury. ‘It’s been more successful than we ever dreamed it could be,’ says Mary. ‘Even with the rise of internet based estate agents, a lot of people still want to use a traditional agent and it’s because they want the customer service.’

Through rain or shine the South Gloucestershire Show 2017 was a spectacular success! Despite some occasional Saturday showers, it didn’t stop the people of South Glos and beyond from enjoying another weekend of FAMILY FUN! The rain that did make a guest appearance was replaced with glorious sunshine on the Sunday. The weekend of the 5th and 6th August saw 29,000 THROUGH THE GATES, enjoying the biggest South Glos Show to date. The first ever ‘HAM NATIONAL’ took place with local businesses sponsoring the pork-fessional athletes and doing their part to raise money for the 2017 NOMINATED CHARITY, MENINGITIS NOW. With the total still pending it is anticipated to exceed last year’s amount to hopefully make a difference to as many lives as possible. Special Guests Joel Dommett and Lisa Snowdon also delighted visitors with their meet and greet appearances throughout the weekend at the Meningitis Now Stand. Alongside the piggy racing, the GREGOR HEATING MAIN ARENA was also full of danger loving dogs from the ROCKWOOD DOG DISPLAY and crazy stunts in the ENTERPRISE CAR CLUB STEVE COLLEY MOTORBIKE SHOW. BBC RADIO BRISTOL entertained our visitors between acts and found out the history behind some of the 2017 Exhibitors. POPULAR BBC RADIO PROGRAMME CLUELESS, also joined the fun on Sunday morning. Visitor favourite THE JD PIPES SHEEP SHOW brought their fun and educational demonstration, with dancing sheep and sheering demos thrown in. Alongside this the COUNTRY FAIR was full of animals from the usual chicks and pigs to the unusual meerkats and parrots. Not only this but many of our visitors brought their delightful four legged friends (plus a pet meerkat) along to enjoy the weekend with them. Who can forget the countless Exhibitors that took to the WESTERLEIGH SHOWGROUND? From cheese, mead, bubble tea, art, jewellery, reiki and so much more there was something for everyone. This year’s Craft and Festival of Food marquee was a SHOW RECORD 900 SQUARE FEET and 60 metres long. “The team are all overwhelmed by the positive response following a spectacular 2017 South Glos Show” said Darren Hawkins, Event Organiser. “Despite some tricky weather Saturday, it didn't stop the fun and those that joined us Sunday were clearly rewarded with some added sunshine. Time for us to get thinking how we can make 2018 even better. The Show celebrates its 5th Show next year, so watch this space!” The South Gloucestershire Show 2018 will be held on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th August at the South Glos Showground, Westerleigh, BS37 8QZ. Further information on what happened at this year’s South Gloucestershire Show can be found on the website; For all enquiries email the Show on;
