Uncle Nando Yeah!! My present has arrived! Finally (she kept us waiting ages!) the fat one went off to hospital and came back with my baby! Ah!!! She's so cute! (The baby, not the fat one...yes she's still fat!..how does that work?) I know it may be hard for you to believe but this rough tough little bundle of white fur is totally smitten! I mean she was so little and helpless what else could I do but look after her? I mean I look after them don't I? So it's kind of doggy logic to add her to the pack. It's hard work I can tell you! Every time she stirred I had to whine, look concerned and run to my people to make sure they took care of her. If only I had hands instead of paws I'm sure I could do a better job! At the beginning they were all fingers and thumbs it was hard to watch! It's a bit better now I've got them trained but I still have to stay alert. Take the other day, Skye the silly Springer Spaniel came visiting and I had to speak very harshly to her twice when she got far too near to my little girl for my (or my people’s) liking! You never know what that silly dog will do next, I hope she got the message grrrrr. Of course it's not all gurgles and zzzzzs, blimey I thought I could make a smell! but little Poppy (oops I forgot to tell you her name!) can put my occasional indiscretions into the shade! It's quite nice to be off the hook in that regard for a change! But I do feel a little guilty when she takes the blame! he he! Poppy Jessica (How come she gets two names?) is 4 weeks old now, she's a lot noisier (boy am I glad I sleep downstairs!) a lot bigger (all she seems to do is eat!) and a lot more active. (when I say 'active' obviously I don't mean taking me for walks, throwing my ball or running around the garden with me, no I mean wriggly, stretchy and wavy. In fact she kicked me in the nose the other day!...the little tyke :-) !

Me And My Best Pal Pops

I have to say even with all my disturbed nights (and days) and the extra responsibility I am very glad we're a family of four now, it feels right you know? Yes I know I'm at the bottom of the pile (what's new?) BUT I know I'm part of the pile and that's what matters to me. Oh! hang on I can hear her crying again better make sure they're taking care of her, after all Pops and me can have a lot of fun when she gets bigger! Til next time from Uncle Nando x

Reducing Landlord Stress As a lettings agent who has invested time and effort in achieving a qualification in my subject and whose company is accredited by leading industry bodies I am continually exasperated by press horror stories on tenancies that go badly wrong. Don’t let other people’s misfortunes put you off. If all tenancies were like the horror stories I doubt there would be many letting agents around. If your tenancy has been set up and is managed correctly then you have no reason to worry. Here at Country Property we ensure that you have all the correct paperwork in place to start the tenancy, so that you are complying with all the legislation. Indeed we use advice from experts in tenancy law to ensure that we are bang up to date. There are now so many rules and regulations and we are here to make sure that you have complied with them all. Once the tenancy has commenced our management team will keep in regular contact with the tenant and regularly visit the property to ensure everything is running smoothly, your tenant is happy and all maintenance issues are dealt with promptly so that bigger issues don’t arise. We even have a 24 hour emergency phone number so that tenants can contact us any time of day or night if they experience a problem, getting us out of bed rather than you!! Using an accredited, qualified agent like Country Property should give you peace of mind and the ability to enjoy the returns on your property investment. Please contact me to discuss the management of your property.

Time To Review Your Skincare By Marie-Louise Coster

Hands up … How many of you reading this have been using the same skincare products for over a year? Over two years? Over 5 years? Yes I thought as much. It is very easy to get into a routine with skin care, as you finish a product you replace it with the same one and before you know it you have been using the same products for years without considering whether or not they still suit you or achieve your desired results. So as we come into this new season of Autumn I strongly urge you to review your skin care. Using the same product all year round is not beneficial to your skin at all, it will get used to it and the product will become less effective – meaning it is ultimately a waste of money. Also, the products you first bought a few years ago may not be best suited to your skin now due to changes in your skin condition. Added to that, the moisturiser that you have been using all Summer should have been a lighter texture with a high SPF to protect the skin against harmful UV rays. Now as we approach the Autumn/Winter it is essential that we use a moisturiser that is richer in texture to protect our skin against the change in the weather, the cold air, the wind, central heating etc. It is also a good idea, at the change of the seasons, to introduce a serum to your routine – a little bit like a vitamin boost. A serum will be rich in concentrated ingredients and is formulated from smaller molecules than a moisturiser, meaning that it can penetrate deeper into the skin and work more intensively. Also, because the molecules are smaller a serum will carry whatever product is applied over the top of it much deeper too - thus making that product more effective. I would advise using a serum for a month at the change of each season underneath your

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes energy healing. The founder of the system was Dr Mikau Usui. Energy healing involves direct application of the Chi for the purpose of strengthening the client’s energy system to enable the body’s natural ability to heal itself. A Reiki healing is very simply performed. It involves the placing of the hands upon the person which enables the energy to begin flowing. The energy knows where to go, and what to do once it gets there. It draws through the healer exactly that amount of energy, which the recipient needs. All this happens without direct conscious intervention by the healer. Reiki is used to help heal a wide range of problems. Emotional difficulties are just as healable as physical ones since emotional issues are even more directly present in the energy structures. A session is booked for about 1 hour, the therapy taking about 40 minutes of this.

Discover More About Your Family History By Vicky Lord I have always been interested in history and how and where people lived, so much so that I studied for a history degree. Growing up I was told stories of my mother's family, that no-one knew where my great grandad was from...was it Belgium, Germany or even Alsace-Lorraine? My grandmother insisted she was descended from French Protestant refugees...but was this wishful thinking? As part of my own family research over the last 10 years I have been able to meet distant relatives in Germany and have visited the villages where my ancestors were mayors in the 1600's. I was also privileged to meet the son of a Canadian War Hero who just happened to be my mother's cousin. Have you ever wondered where your family is from or why you have a particular surname, have you been brought up with stories or tales of a particular ancestor and want to know more? What surprises could be awaiting you in your family tree....I can help you search for some answers. I offer a variety of fixed price research packages from just £40, or I can offer a bespoke research package to suit your needs for as little as £10 per hour. Gift vouchers also available. You could find out some fascinating facts about your ancestors and learn more about your roots. www.vickyfamilyhistory.co.uk

IN THE GARDEN WITH JILL FENWICKTHE GARHello Everyone DEN WITH JILL FENWICK IN

Autumn is finally here and yet the garden is still looking good. The longlasting Japanese Anemone, Anemone x hybrida‘Honorine Jobert (pictured below) with its delicate white flowers, continues to lighten up my dark Viburnum hedge. It thrives in dry shade and is one of the special plants that follows me whenever I create a new garden. Falling leaves are beginning to pile up on lawns where they need to be raked off before they leave brown patches. Within flower beds they provide a good mulch and surplus leaves can be stacked in simple wire mesh bins or sacks to create the most useful of composts. It is so tempting to cut down all the perennials when they start to look ragged, but stop and think before you do so. Do they have they a good outline, and will their seeds attract and sustain the birds throughout the winter months? Blue Tits love chasing each other through the buddleia bushes, pecking the seeds as they go. Now is a good time to divide your perennials if they are looking a little bare in the middle. Treat them to some good compost as you re-plant them and they will perform much better next year. After waiting patiently for two years, my espalier apples are finally rewarding me with delicious fruit. ‘Laxton’s Superb’ (photo above) has been the best and largest so far. The fruit is so easy to pick as the espaliers are only 1.5 metres high. No rickety ladders required! The garden centres are stacked full of irresistible bulbs at the moment, but plan where you are going to put them first before you bankrupt yourself! For the greatest effect, plant in large groups of one colour near to the house - from where you can appreciate them when the weather is too cold to step outside.

Above the award-winning Hobbs House Bakery and Butchery in Chipping Sodbury, in what was the family home, the upper floor now hosts the Hobbs House School. Despite a hectic schedule including a recent working trip to America , Tom and Henry are taking Classes this autumn both individually and together - in response to student demand a joint one-day Bakery and Butchery Class has been designed. There’s also a half day Children’s Baking Course, led by Tom in October should you know a potential junior Fabulous Baker Brother/Sister. How Is Your Child Settling In At School?

The new school term often heralds a lot of upheaval and uncertainty for children and young people of all ages. Many children face a wide variety of challenges at all stages of their school career. Some 10 year olds can feel anxious, worried or scared about moving from primary up to secondary school. Some teenagers can feel overwhelmed with the challenges that Year 11 or Sixth Form has in store for them. The pressure of school work can be immense with exams, coursework and revision all taking its toll. In addition there is often increased expectations from school, home and social groups. Plus peer pressure, relationship issues, social networking, eating too much or eating too little, lack of sleep and exercise. Put this all together and it’s not surprising that the most resilient of young people can, at times, crumple under the weight of it all. Caroline Huish, a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist based in Iron Acton has a lot of experience working with children and young people between the ages of 10 to 18 who present a wide variety of issues. Caroline believes that everyone is unique and individual; therefore each session is tailored around each child and their own individual needs. Using a variety of techniques including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnotherapy, Caroline helps children to overcome a wide range of challenges by encouraging them to utilise their own skills, strengths and resources. Caroline specialises in the following areas: • Low self-confidence • Low self-esteem • Anxiety • Insomnia

• Relationship Issues • Depression • Anger and frustration • Fears and Phobias

Stanshawes Court - A Brief History In early times the parish of Yate comprised three manors. Broadly speaking these were centred on Yate Court and Brimsham (or Brinsham) in the northern part of the parish and Stanshawe in the southern half. The name Stanshawe crops up in the history of Yate and Sodbury as far back as the fourteenth century. In the late 16th century Stanshawes was in the hands of the Stokes family who were landowners and business men and great benefactors to the parish. Stokes relinquished the estate around 1870 Stanshawes house gets mentioned in early documents but the present grand house was built in 1874 by Squire Robert Nathaniel Hooper, who obtained the estate from Stokes family. No expense was spared in the building of the house, nor in the construction of farm buildings, lodges and worker’s cottages. The parklands and gardens were absolutely magnificent and the stables were reckoned to be second only to those belonging to the Duke of Beaufort at Badminton. The house was built in stone in Transition Early English style with elaborate windows, gables and chimneys. Above the windows on the outside South and West walls are carvings depicting Aesop’s fables. Even the roof tiles are arranged in decorative patterns. The arched entrance was under an almost fairy tale tower. Imagine alighting from your carriage under the archway and then into a massive hall with its magnificent staircase. The top floor windows of the tower were said to have been used by Squire Hooper to snoop on his garden and park staff. Later, circa 1920, modern plumbing was added to the house and part of the tower housed a large water tank. Some years ago I went into the tower and the tank was still there. It was huge and must have been constructed in situ, as there was no way it could have been taken up the stairs! Today, the carriage era “drop off point” has been enclosed with attractive doors, but the entrance is still impressive. The stables looked out on an enclosed courtyard with a huge vine. The vine must have been quite something as it is referred to in a number of books and guides. The park, with it’s ornamental lakes, the ha-ha (ditch between the formal garden and the park lands), the crinkle-crankle wall (a wavy decorative wall), exotic trees and collection of wild fowl and peacocks, added more to the extensive property. S q u i r e Hooper allowed the grounds to be opened for garden parties and fetes so the people of Yate had a glimpse inside. From the 1930’s the house declined, being used at times as a hostel, offices and storage before, in the 1960’s, becoming a hotel/restaurant and the grounds becoming a public park. hogweed trotters news and what’s on .

Hogweed star this month: Ruth Medcroft. Ruth’s stunning performances in Sheffield, to deservedly win 2 Gold and 2 Silver medals at the British Transplant Games, were an inspiration to all. Julie Froggatt excelled in very hot conditions over a hilly 10 mile Standish Woodland Chase, in a 4 minute pb, finishing in 1hr38m. A jaw dropping performance by Martin Young at the 135 mile Ring o' Fire ultra over 3 days around Anglesey. Running on a mix of cliff paths, beaches, fields and tarmac, his cumulative time of 36 hours and 38 minutes, saw him 43rd out of 94 starters and 54 finishers.

Ruth

There was a social 'Gromit Run' run around Bristol which saw Hogweeds (photo right) enjoy a steady paced tour of Aardman's finest statues, from the centre to Clifton. 14 Hogweeds demolished the Westonbirt Triathlon, among them closet geotechnical engineer and chief Hogweed snapper Mark Stephenson. (photo left)

Geoff

The Interclub 5k mob match hosted by Bitton Road Runners saw 31 members racing. Seasoned members such as Jaroslaw Motyka finishing 5th overall were joined by those returning to the fray such as Wayne Holcombe. This was his 1strace since breaking his leg at the Bristol HM last year, all stemming from a life threatening accident at work some years ago. Well done Wayne-err. Little Stoke Park Run saw pb's smashed for Geoff Partridge (19:53), a 'not feeling the love' and pained Martin Wood Severnside Ramblers Short walks! (23:32), Kim Freestone (25:16) and John 'pocket to socket' Francksen Long walks! Whichever you prefer (25:22). We gave Martin a cuddle after — join us! and he was fine. FARM TAILS!

So October is upon us and things are really heating up at The Jolly Goose Cº. The turkeys have settled in well on the farm and are friendly and inquisitive. They’re enjoying their diet of home grown barley and perching on straw bales. Their favourite activity seems to be pushing each other off the bales...strange creatures! Our turkeys are a mixture of Bronze breeds which all finish at different sizes so we can cater for small and big Christmas dinners! The bronze turkey is a traditional breed which matures slowly, laying down tasty meat and fat to produce a succulent bird, particularly when fed a natural diet of barley. The geese and ducks are also flourishing and love playing out in the paddock. The geese are now in full feather and the ducks are nearly there too. Honks and quacks now ring out across the farm! We’ve also been busy raiding the hedgerows around the farm and enjoying the bounty of fruits and berries following our lovely summer. With our baskets full, we will be experimenting with different flavoured jellies and jams ... maybe even something to compliment our birds. We’ve heaps of sloes, blackberries, haws and rosehips so let us know if you have any ideas! This Christmas is set to be our busiest yet, with orders already coming in thick and fast. With our brand new kitchen and office, we are hoping to be able to keep up with demand! So if you are interested in ordering a traditionally, ethically and locally reared bird for Christmas, get in touch; Phone – 07890 688 948/07779 547 510 Have a jolly October! A TINY HEARING AID THAT **

The world’s first and only 100% invisible, 24/7 wearable, sweat-proof, shower-proof, for-months-at-a-time hearing device.

L

et’s face it, the big problem with hearing loss is that other people know you’ve got it. They can see that hearing aid. But not with new Lyric from Swiss hearing healthcare company Phonak. It’s invisible. Really invisible, you won’t be able to tell at all. It fits deep in your ear canal and stays there for months at a time. It’s so soft and comfortable you can easily forget you’re wearing it. What's more although it’s the most advanced aid now available, if any new developments improve it, you get a new aid at no charge.

“I heard the dawn chorus for the first time in 20 years.”

Jackie Grant of Colchester spent years and thousands of £££ trying different hearing aids – without success. Then she tried Lyric and was astounded.

Yes! Lyric ends your hearing loss for good, and gives you back the joy of hearing all life’s glorious sounds. Because unlike digital technology which mimics natural sound, Lyric

Community news & what’s on

NEWS FROM SODBURY IN BLOOM GOLD AGAIN You may remember that we decided not to enter the main 'In Bloom' competition this year but concentrate on the Neighborhood Awards competition plus a couple of new projects (you may have seen the new bed at the bottom of Gorlands Road). We entered five areas the High Street, St John's Mead Primary School, Batten Court, St John's Riverside Park & the Community Orchard and the Ridings including the Millennium Garden. Well the High Street was given an 'Outstanding' award which is the highest level there is so thank you again to everyone who did anything towards keeping the High Street looking good. The other areas also got awards. However, it doesn't end there. When the judges came in July they were so impressed by what they saw that they decided to enter the whole thing in another competition and we have won gold in that competition. This was a real surprise to the Sodbury in Bloom Team and we would like to thank everyone for their help whatever form it took. We have some interesting ideas up our sleeve for next year so watch this space. Great Western Society: Tuesday 8th October with Ian Bennett showing Gems from the Maurice Dean Collection. Yate And Dodington In Bloom 2013 Awards On Friday 20th September I was delighted to attend Poole Court where Cllr Wully Perks, Mayor of Yate, announced the results of the Yate and Dodington In Bloom entry for this year and also presented “It’s Your Neighbourhood” awards to local groups who had been involved during the year. The overall result of a Silver Gilt Award was announced by Cllr Christine Howard , Chair of Yate and Dodington In Bloom, and Chair of Dodington Council, who had attended the results ceremony in Truro. The feedback from the judges had been extremely positive, in particular they were very impressed with the enthusiasm and level of community involvement including school children, nursery staff and residents and staff at Susan Hampshire House. This was borne out by the numerous “It’s Your Neighbourhood” Awards. To set the scene, there are 5 levels to these awards, including Level 3 “Development”, Level 4 “Thriving” and Level 5 “Outstanding”. Cllr Howard was delighted that not only had so many won recognition at Levels 3 and 4, but that the Friends of Kingsgate Park, working together with Tony Moore, Estates Manager for Yate Town Council and Phil Jones, Parks Supervisor, had achieved the highest award, Level 5 Outstanding. The Mayor, Cllr Wully Perks told us how proud he had been to show the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire the wonderful work undertaken in Kingsgate Park and all around Yate earlier in the year and how impressed he was by the hard work of all the volunteer groups. The Y and D IB Group had also decided to present three “Special Awards” to Bright Beginnings Pre-School ( Cr anl ei g h Court) (photo top right), Brimsham Green School (middle photo right) and Susan Hampshire House (photo right) for their

outstanding contributions during the year.

Level 3 Awards: Friends of Yate & District Heritage Centre, St Mary’s Churchyard, Wapley Common and ‘Orchard For The Future’ , St Nicholas and Jacob’s Well Level 4 Awards: Wapley Bushes, Friends of Lilliput Park Level 5 Award Friends of Kingsgate Park Southwold Group of Avon Wildlife Trust Above: Friends of Kingsgate Park with www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk Cllr Wully Perks Mayor of Yate , Tony Sunday 6 October Orchard Harvest Day 11am -4pm, Moore (third from left) and Phil Jones Winterbourne Barn, Church Lane, Winterbourne,.
