COMMUNITY NEWS Long serving Shopmobility Volunteer retires after 10 years Popular long serving Shopmobility South Glos Volunteer James Wiltshire has retired from the charity after 10 years service. The scheme which started operating in 2006 is based in Yate Library, and provides a vital service to users, renting out mobility scooters and wheelchairs. James said : - 'I have enjoyed my time at Shopmobility and helping people with their disabilities'. Sheridan Crew, Shopmobility's popular Project Manager, who worked closely with James said: -'' James was a tremendous asset to Shopmobility during his 10 years of volunteering in offering his support to ensure the service remained open during staff absences and supporting me to help run the service smoothly. James was rightly awarded a community award in recent years for his dedicated service to us. James was able to empathise with people's disability issues given a shared experience of disability and would share his love of trains to those with a similar interest. We will be sad to see him leave us but he has decided to 'retire' due in part to health considerations. James intends to remain using the service so we and other members of the service should continue to see James in and around Yate shopping centre''. People can rent mobility scooters and wheelchairs from shopmobility South Glos. From September it re-opened, opening two days a week, Tuesdays and Fridays - 10 am to 3.30pm. The Shopmobility scheme is based in Yate Library, at Yate Shopping Centre. To pre book a scooter or wheelchair please ring or email the scheme on 01454 868718 or 07999574474, or email shopmobilitysouthglos@yahoo.com Or simply call into our office at the Yare Library complex. Shopmobility Vice Chairman David Bell said "We would like to thank James for his many year's service to Shopmobility. He has been greatly appreciated by all at the scheme and the service's many users." Shop Chipping Sodbury: Help Us Thrive

Stay safe and shop local to support Chipping Sodbury traders “The support from local residents since we reopened has been overwhelming. We‟re working hard to ensure people are safe and customers are being very cooperative with all the measures we‟ve put in place,” says Jerry Hampton, owner of the Hamptons Deli. Jerry is one of the local traders joining forces with South Gloucestershire Council as part of its „Help Us Thrive: Shop South Glos‟ campaign. Meet the trader videos, a social media campaign, and special offers from traders among other steps, highlight the best of what high streets across the area have to offer, including Chipping Sodbury with its wide choice of independent traders. Safety measures Along with traders, the council has worked hard to make Chipping Sodbury as safe as possible for shoppers. Covid-19 measures include more relaxing licensing regulations to make it easier for pubs, cafés and restaurants to install outside seating areas. Challenging times Councillor Toby Savage, Leader of South Gloucestershire Council, said: “Local communities have shown great commitment and resolve to limiting the spread of the Covid-19pandemic. We now ask for your support again. These are exceptionally challenging times for businesses, who have done a fantastic job to welcome shoppers back safely. It‟s time for residents and shoppers to continue to do their bit and help them thrive further.” Explore this historic market town Danielle Howes, the owner of the Toll House Clinic, says: “Chipping Sodbury has everything; you can buy award-winning cakes, get support for your wedding planning, you can meet your friends for lunch or coffee. We have such a wide selection of shops you don‟t need to go anywhere else. It‟s a great place to live and work.” The market town is steeped in history. Founded in the mid-12th century, it boasts one of the widest working high streets in the country. The handsome Cotswold stone shop fronts create the perfect backdrop for an afternoon coffee or lunch with the family. Jo Hewer, owner of Not Too Shabby says: “Chipping Sodbury is a very beautiful and friendly town. There are lots of independent and quirky cafés and shops and most of us welcome dogs so you can bring your pooches along. Farm Tales

Autumn has arrived and although the temperature has dropped it is BEAUTIFUL out there at the moment. We have had another busy month on the farm! We have been moving the cattle about to make sure they are all set for the winter. We have also been cultivating the ground and planting our winter crops which we will harvest next summer. October has seen a new batch of calves arrive on the farm. These will enter our commercial beef herd and will join the rest as soon as they are weaned. In the meantime, we have been kept busy making sure that our new arrivals are well fed and cosy in their new home. The Suffolk sheep are continuing to do well. The rams have now been taken away from the ewes and we will be scanning the ewes to see if they’re ‘in-lamb’ next month! We are making sure they are all ok at least twice a day and are busy clearing out the sheds and checking our supplies before they come in during the winter for lambing. The beef and lamb boxes continue to fly out of the kitchen. We really do appreciate the support, and you can continue to order boxes each month. We have launched a series of Christmas Boxes which are jam packed full of goodies to help you celebrate. To continue the good news we are bringing back the TURKEYS and will be able to supply you with Turkey for Christmas (from out sister farm). To see what is in our Christmas boxes and for more information find our Facebook page Perrinpit Farm Meat Boxes or please do get in touch on: perrinpitmeatboxes@outlook.com or Tel: 07919 891 770 Jacks and William

Local law firm Simpson Solicitors have just been told they have won the „Highly Commended‟ award by judges for the Law Society Excellence Awards 2020 , the highest accolade for law firms in England and Wales. When many firms closed, Simpson Solicitors at 79 Broad Street, Chipping Sodbury kept their doors open and continued serving clients with a free home visit service across the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area for people needing Wills, Powers of Attorney and Probate during the pandemic. The judges were impressed by the range of Simpsons‟ innovative initiatives, such as Free Review Meetings, free meetings at the client‟s home, garden meetings, drive-thru signings and a scheme providing a free service to NHS workers. Law Society of England and Wales president Simon Davis said: “2020 has been an extremely challenging year for the profession and the public. Firms of solicitors have gone above and beyond in order to keep individual and business clients out of trouble, often at risk to their own mental, physical and financial health. At the Law Society Excellence Awards, we come together to celebrate outstanding success. There are more than 9,000 law firms in England and Wales, so for Simpson Solicitors to win an Excellence Award is an extraordinary achievement.” John Baden-Daintree (solicitor at Simpsons) said “I am so proud of this award which acknowledges how our fantastic team were appointed as key-workers and then supported so many local people, especially the most vulnerable and elderly. It highlights the importance to our clients of being able to access a friendly local expert. The pandemic is not over and our award-winning Free Review Service for Wills and Powers of Attorney remains open and available to all” The Law Society Excellence Awards 2020 – held virtually for the first time due to the Covid-19 pandemic – shines a spotlight on the achievements of firms of solicitors in England and Wales. Professionals are recognised across a range of categories covering all areas of legal practice and business.

COMMUNITY NEWS Aerospace Bristol receives lifeline grant from Government’s £1.57bn Culture Recovery Fund Aerospace Bristol has been awarded £514,000 as part of the Government‟s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund (CRF) to help face the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and to ensure they have a sustainable future, the Culture Secretary has announced today. Aerospace Bristol is one of 1,385 cultural and creative organisations across the country receiving urgently needed support. £257 million of investment has been announced today as part of the very first round of the Culture Recovery Fund grants programme being administered by Arts Council England. Further rounds of funding in the cultural and heritage sector are due to be announced over the coming weeks. Aerospace Bristol reopened its doors to the public on the 1st August. The grant from the Culture Recovery Fund is vital in allowing the museum to remain open and continue to provide the opportunity for people to enjoy and learn about the region‟s rich aviation heritage, including Concorde. The grant will protect key jobs and skills and allow Aerospace Bristol to resume its learning and community outreach programmes. It will also enable the museum to further develop its digital content, adapting for a „post-Covid‟ world. With a comprehensive range of Covid-19 safety measures in place, Aerospace Bristol is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “This funding is a vital boost for the theatres, music venues, museums and cultural organisations that form the soul of our nation. It will protect these special places, save jobs and help the culture sector‟s recovery. “These places and projects are cultural beacons the length and breadth of the country. This unprecedented investment in the arts is proof this government is here for culture, with further support to come in the days and weeks ahead so that the culture sector can bounce back strongly.” Chair, Arts Council England, Sir Nicholas Serota, said: “Theatres, museums, galleries, dance companies and music venues bring joy to people and life to our cities, towns and villages. This life-changing funding will save thousands of cultural spaces loved by local communities and international audiences. Further funding is still to be announced and we are working hard to support our sector during these challenging times.” Executive Director, Aerospace Bristol, Lloyd Burnell, said: “We are delighted to have received this grant from DCMS Culture Recovery Fund which should safeguard the future of Aerospace Bristol, our wonderful collections of objects and archives, our important learning and community engagement programmes and, of course, jobs and skills. We look forward to continuing to welcome visitors to the museum, especially over the upcoming October Half Term”.

Other Chapels in the surrounding area Following on from my article last month about Baptist Chapels in the area. This month I am looking at a few of the other Non conformist churches in the locality. Old and new. One of the earliest must be the Quakers , or Society of Friends, Meeting Hall in Brook Street.. The Meeting house was used over many years but the congregation was never large. In the 1920’s the building was sold to the WI, but it was an expensive facility, and by the 1970’s they sold it to the Jehovah’s Witnesses. They in turn moved to a new base in Yate and the meeting hall was sold and is now a private home. In Old Sodbury at one time the Baptist Chapel was in decline and for a while the building was used by the Plymouth Brethren (late 1880’s) Moving to Yate, there seems to have been numerous Non Conformist Chapels. Where the Fire Station is now was the Brethren Chapel and Gospel Hall from around 1862. This was demolished to make way for the new centre and the Chapel was re instituted in Cranleigh Court.

In Stover Road from about 1900 was the Hope Congregational Chapel which was very popular in the 1930s and 1940s and even had a Youth Club on site in the1950s, but lack of use led to the building being demolished in the late 1970’s, by which time it was in a sad state. In North Road were the Christian Scientists and then the Christadelphian Church. I just have room for an interior photo (provided by the Heritage Centre) and that is of Nibley Chapel. I don’t have space for the myriad of other churches in the area - past and present. Please excuse me if yours has been left out. Provided by Jim Elsworth Copyright

We're open! Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust Community Events A range of autumn events are now on offer. In order to be covid-secure, all tickets must be booked in advance and numbers are strictly limited. Socially distanced seating and contract tracing are in place, so household groups (up to 6) need to book together to sit together. We ask adults to wear a face covering indoors unless they are eating or drinking. Hand sanitizer and toilet facilities are available at all times. For those who do not yet feel confident to go out and about, or who have transport difficulties, the Trust is starting to stream some events online, starting with our monthly talks. Booking can be made in exactly the same way via the website for these. Monthly talks All talks are at 7pm and tickets cost ÂŁ5. Free on-site car parking will be available, and the mini cafe will be offering tea, coffee, cake, and wine. The Medieval Barn can be cool at this time of year, so please dress warmly. Tuesday 10 November - 180 Years of the Gloucestershire Constabulary. Sue Webb, force archivist at police HQ and at Gloucestershire Heritage Hub, looks at policing in the historic county of Gloucestershire (to which South Glos belonged). 'Tea and Tour' Open Afternoons Thursdays 5th November and 1st December at 2pm. Enjoy a cuppa while you hear about the history of Winterbourne Medieval Barn. Then take the opportunity to look around the rest of the recently renovated site. Hands On Activities for Adults Saturday 5th December - Fabric Wreath Workshop. Create a beautiful fabric Christmas wreath for your home in this fun and informal morning workshop led by Amy from Bath Artists Studios. All materials are provided and no sewing experience is needed. Mulled wine and mince pies are included to get you in the festive mood! Family Activity Days Saturday 28th November - Tell Trails : A Medieval Christmas. Follow the story of Agnes in 1380 as she and her family help to prepare the Midwinter festivities at the Barn. See miniature scenes from her life working the land, and have a go at centuries-old crafts and carolling. Activities typically last a couple of hours and are aimed at families with children aged 5 - 12, although preschoolers are welcome. Pre-book your arrival time slot between 10am and 3pm online. Tickets are just ÂŁ5 per family. Drinks and snacks will be on sale. With the unpredictable nature of the covid outbreak, there could be variations to Events over the coming months, but visitors can keep an eye on the Barn website and Facebook page for updates. After booking, we will send you a reminder email closer to the time with up-to-date guidance and an outline of what to expect on the day. We look forward to seeing you!
