Live In Care by The Good Care Group Rated “Outstanding” by CQC

The Good Care Group is an award winning provider of high quality, professional 24 hour live in care that enables older individuals and couples to stay safely and happily at home for as long as possible. We are the only dedicated live in care provider to be awarded "Outstanding" by the CQC during our most recent inspection. "The provider was exceptional in its responsiveness to people's changing needs and prevented unnecessary hospital admissions through its flexible service delivery” What is Live In Care? Receiving 24 hour care at home is a popular alternative to care homes for individuals with long-term health needs. Given the choice, many of us would choose to remain within our homes whilst receiving support. However when faced with the responsibility of choosing the type of care we would like our loved ones to receive, we tend to automatically assume care homes are the best or only option. However, this is not always the case. Receiving care at home makes it possible to get the professional support you require without leaving the comfort of your own home. We know that independence, choice and dignity are important for both happiness and health. Our care services enable you to continue to live your life the way you wish to in the comfort of your own home and familiar surroundings. Our team of professional live in carers are trained to provide you with the highest quality of compassionate care. How does Live In Care differ from other types of care? Unlike other care provisions such as care homes and hourly care, The Good Care Group provides a more holistic service. This is because: • Your plan of care is uniquely developed to suit your needs without any rigid timetables or set routines • Specialist care will be provided to you within the comfort of your home from carers who have a true understanding of the needs you may have • You will avoid the disruption and upheaval of moving out of your home to receive 24 hour care • It is proven to improve both health and well-being • A more economical option compared to care homes - especially for couples who are able to stay together • You can continue living life surrounded by your communities and home comforts - including pets Who Can The Good Care Group Help? There is no one size fits all approach to your support at The Good Care Group. Your service is built around your specific needs and wishes. Our professional carers are carefully matched to your loved ones based on their experience, skills, training and qualifications as well as personality, hobbies and interests. Our carers are employed by us and we never use agency staff. Live in carers at The Good Care Group are highly trained and experienced in caring for a range conditions including Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease, Strokes and Multiple Sclerosis. Our home care services can be provided on a long-term basis as well as on a short-term, respite basis. What do live in carers do? Working in teams of two our live in carers provide round the clock assistance to your loved ones in the security of their own homes. Our service is nurse led, to ensure you'll receive the highest standard of care. Your care assessment will ultimately determine the type and level of care that you require. Your carers duties may consist of: • Light household chores and duties • Assisting you with social activities • Administration of the house hold including bills, doctors appointments • Health and Hygiene • Cooking/ Nutrition • Promoting and administering medication • Specialist Care for complex conditions. At The Good Care Group we create unique care plans tailored to your specific needs, meaning the services we offer will vary with every individual. If you are searching for high quality live in home care for your loved one or yourself, please contact one of our care advisors who are always on hand to answer your questions and to help you decide whether Live In care may be a suitable option. Fire Brigade Rules 1903

Last month I wrote about the documents I came across which were from the Iles family of printers. This month I will write about one of the documents printed by Edgar Iles, who ran his business from Brick House in Horse Street, and it is a booklet entitled “RULES and REGULATIONS of the CHIPPING SODBURY Parish Council FIRE BRIGADE”. It was published in 1903. Originally the Fire Engine would have been under the control of the Bailiff and his Bailiff Burgesses and that became part of the charity, the Town Trust. Documents from the late 1800’s state that the trust must “maintain the Fire Engine belonging to the Charity and defraying any expenditure incidental to its use for the benefit of the inhabitants of Chipping Sodbury”. To this day the Trust Deed for the Town Trust lists the Fire Engine as one of its responsibilities. The creation of Parish Councils at the end of the 18th Century muddied the waters regarding responsibilities for firefighting and the document I found was authorised by both the Trustees and the Parish Council. Eventually of course, the County Councils were made responsible for the Fire Service. What did the early Fire Engine look like? Well we know, because it is still around and being well cared for. In 2015, as part of Discover South Glos, the engine was put on display in the Town Hall. The photos below show the Hand Pumped Engine, the Waggon of which it was drawn by horse to the fire and, to show the scale, myself and David Shipp (Chairman of the Town Trust) pumping the main piston crank.

In 1903 the crew comprised a Captain and ViceCaptain and 12 Firemen. I believe that at that time the Fire Station was in Horse Street (where JMI Bathrooms are now) and I know that the key was held at the Police Station. The crew had to meet for fire drills every month. Pay was 10 shillings (50p) per fire for the Captain, 40p for the Vice-Captain and 25p per fireman, with additional payments if the fire call lasted more than 3 hours. For long call outs the Captain had to provide refreshments! Attendance at a fire was free in the Parish of Chipping Sodbury, but any fires beyond the parish boundary were charged at 2guineas (£2.10). COMMUNITY NEWS Clive Daniels from Yate completed the recent Bristol half marathon in 2 hours 27 minutes raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support in his 33rd year running for charity. In that time he has raised £252,000 (£230,000 for Macmillan). Last year he vowed that it would be his last charity run but changed his mind in July after receiving the British Citizen Award and meeting the other inspirational winners of the award. He hopes to have raised around £11,000 from this year's run and is very grateful to all his sponsors. He also apologises to those he was unable to get to see because of his late decision to run again. Great Britain Blind Sailors win Gold and World Championship title at the 2017 Word Sailing Blind Fleet Racing Open World Sailing Championships. Teams from Great Britain, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand competed for the title of World Champions at the finals in Sheboygan on Lake Michigan, America. Team GB who were defending their title, won again, by wining Silver in the B1 Fleet, Gold in the B2 Fleet and Gold and Silver in the B3 Fleet. Each fleet took part in 17 races throughout the five days of racing. Mark Austen from Yate helmed GB 4 to Silver in the B3 fleet. Mark said ‘teams GB 3 and GB 4 had dominated the racing in the B3 fleet for all of the race days. At the beginning of the last race on the last day we were tied for first place. GB 3 took advantage of wind shift on the left hand side of the lake and finished less than a boat length ahead of my boat.’ ‘We were sailing against the best in the world. I’m Team GB 4 – Mark Austen (Left) so proud of what my crew and I achieved. We’ve only been sailing together as unit for four months. When I was selected to sail in this class of yacht two years ago my ambition was to be good enough to sail for Great Britain and represent my country. Sailing at the World Championships was a dream. Now I’m part of a World Class team and have a Silver Medal.” Each boat has a crew of four. In B1 fleet the Helm and Mainsheet trimmer are both blind and the Jib sheet trimmer and Tactician are fully sighted. In the B2 and B3 fleets the visually impaired part of the crews can be made up of a combination of Blind and Partially sighted crew. Mark’s success has been possible due to the kind donations and support from: The Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club, The Chipping Sodbury Lions Club, Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club, Yate Rotary Club, Bob Keen, Molly Westcott, Ray Gunning and his team of cyclists, Colin Bailey, Yate Boy’s Brigade, Yate Football Club, a host of individual donations too numerous to mention, with special thanks to Ann Brodin and her wonderful team of tireless volunteers for their continued support and of course my family. Team GB owe a large thank you to all our sponsors, supporters and our followers for supporting the team, throughout training and during the Worlds. These include the Marine Skills Academy, Dubarry, Gill Marine, Adidas, Barton Marine, Aquapac, Optimum Time and Morris.

Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club Voyage on “The Matthew” The Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club have returned safely from a voyage in Bristol Docks on the iconic galleon, “The Matthew”. Led by Commodore Rod Harris, 40 Yachties and Yachtessses took control and sailed the ship around the floating harbour, and although the tides were low and prevented the ship sailing up the River Avon and out to sea, the voyage was long enough for the Yachies to acquaint themselves with The Matthew and was a useful training session for a further planned voyage when the club hope to make it into the Bristol Channel and beyond. Commodore Harris is pictured with his Yachties preparing to board ship before he took control of the tiller. Supported by The Ships Lookout, John Powell, Lord Westerleigh, who had climbed up the rigging to the crows nest to fulfil his duties, the redoubtable Yachties successfully returned the ship to its berth. Commodore Harris commented that “it is rare for anyone to have a chance to sail such a wonderful historic ship, and has reignited our enthusiasm to redouble our efforts to reopen the River Frome from Chipping Sodbury, through Broadmead into the Bristol Channel”. Bunny Groves, Secretary General. 36

When we set out to deliver care to those in need back in 2013, we never thought support for our work would have grown so quickly in such a short space of time – but it did! Thank you to all our staff, customers, friends and family over the last 4 years that have helped Bluebird Care to become one of the top providers of homecare services. We prioritise ourselves on delivering a standard of care that must be good enough for our own parents.” Jack owns and manages the office with his wife Sophie, who last week presented flowers to two members of staff who’ve been with the organisation since it doors op en ed in O ct ober 2013.Karina Hale and Dawn Mortiboys received gifts and, along with Tara Bees who was in hospital giving birth at the time, have worked for the company since its inception. Jack added “We still have 3 of our original 5 care workers with us. As a family business this means a lot and shows how good our retention record is. Our current staff roster includes mothers and daughters, and cousins across two families.
