And Judge! Nando‘sNando Thrown In The At The Deep End! Hello everyone! Soooo much has happened since we last met, I don't know where to begin! I know! I will do what I always do and just get stuck in. he he! My education continues and when I was staying with the old wrinkly woman she spotted a local dog show and decided that not only should I go but I should enter a couple of classes as well! Not only that but my behaviour was to be witnessed by her daughter and niece! No pressure then! Have you ever been to a dog show? Don't! They're mad!! There's dogs EVERYWHERE! Not only that, there's dog mad people everywhere too. Well I hate to blow my own trumpet (not really ;-) ) but I was....what's the word....Brilliant! I kept my head down and my grrrr contained even when surrounded (and I mean surrounded) by 15 or so dogs! and we're not talking little dogs either....Rottweiler rescue were there and lets just say if you think I have issues think again. We looked around the stands (more of that later) and entered two classes...'Most handsome male dog' (naturally!) and 'best trick' (I keep telling you I'm clever!) I don't understand why but out of a class of 25 in the first I didn't win! I think the judge was having an off day, don't you?! For the second class I had to practice my 'sit, up and spin' routine (Pudsey look out) in which I sit then stand on my back legs

and do a 360 spin...I know clever eh! Well I did my very best and......we didn't get placed! The old woman was very cross as apparently it said 'trick' and the winners did 'obedience' stuff which she didn't think was on. Chillax! I know I'm the best, I don't need a rosette to tell me so! (although I was secretly a bit miffed at the time) Having been such a good boy, the daughter decided I should do another class...'fancy dress' - what was she thinking! She duly went off to said stands and came back with...how can I describe it? a leopard print dog nappy with crossed bone emblem. (I kid you not) apparently I was going to represent The Flintstone's. Well I did let them try it on but sadly (not) it was too small. phew! that's a picture I wouldn't want printed! It's a shame I couldn't go home to my people with a rosette, I always have adventures when I go and stay with the old wrinkly one - such fun! as they say. What's that? The old ones are moving to a house with a garden? I hope that means I can visit more often! What's that, my people are saying... If I don't behave myself I could end up living there permanently? Oh dear! Now I face a moral dilemma don't I? What's a dog to do? he he Till next time, a 'high ten' (another clever trick) from an irrepressible Nando xx

Chocolate, Anyone? By Marie-Louise Coster

I have always been a great believer that you can never have too much of a good thing, and for me chocolate is one of those things! Chocolate gets a lot of bad press when it comes to our skin and is often blamed for causing problem skin, when in reality the exact opposite is true. Chocolate can keep your skin looking young and youthful due to the high content of antioxidants. These antioxidants will reduce damage from pollution, the sun, cigarette smoke, alcohol and give general protection from environmental damage. But the good news doesn’t stop there… Did you know chocolate is also effective in the fight against cellulite? When chocolate is used within salon treatments, and combined with other active ingredients, it helps to increase circulation, decrease cellulite and firm the skin. But sadly this will not come as a result of making chocolate your only source of nutrition – but it will if you have a chocolate treatment. Chocolate facial and body treatments are all the rage in the beauty industry. Raw cocoa powder is the main ingredient in the treatments due to its high content of antioxidants – over 25,000 per spoonful. This is higher than green tea or red wine, in fact chocolate has twice as many antioxidants as red wine, three times as many as green tea and up to five times as many as black tea. However, you have to choose your chocolate wisely; white chocolate has no antioxidant content, milk chocolate has some and dark chocolate has the highest content. Chocolate also contains fats such as cocoa butter or shea butter, both of which make great moisturisers, skin softeners and have strong anti-inflammatory qualities. At All About Mi I offer the Thea Organic Chocolate Body Treatment, this luxurious

treatment is 75 minutes of pure heaven and costs £55. Beginning with a full body exfoliation, chocolate and cocoa butter body scrub is used to remove the dead skin, increase the circulation and improve the overall appearance of cellulite, and the skin as a whole leaving your skin feeling and smelling heavenly. This is followed with the application of the absolutely divine Chocolate and Mint body cream which is massaged into the whole body. The mint will help to detoxify, withdrawing impurities, breaking down cellulite and eliminating toxins and the chocolate will firm, tone and protect the skin… How great is that? This treatment really does put the ‘treat’ into treatment and is an absolute must for you to try!

Super Slimmers’ Weight-loss Success Is In The Bag! Slimmers in Chipping Sodbury are dropping pounds (lbs) and bagging up all the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to raise money for a good cause in The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw. Members of the Chipping Sodbury Slimming World group have spring-cleaned their closets and are donating the clothes that no longer fit their new slimline figures to their local Cancer Research UK shop in Yate. Emma, who runs the groups which meet at Baptist Church Hall every Monday and Willow Hall Ridgewood Centre every Tuesday, says members were delighted to get behind the cause and jumped at the chance to recycle their old tops, dresses, trousers, skirts and more. The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw is a nationwide fundraising drive that sees Slimming World members across the UK donating clothes to Cancer Research UK, Slimming World’s charity partner for 2013. Each bag of clothes collected could raise up to £25. Emma says: "Members in the Chipping Sodbury group have lost 881lbs since January this year and they’re feeling fantastic! Lots of people have dropped down clothes sizes and their wardrobes are full of clothes that are too big and baggy now. And they’re happy to give them away because they know that they’re never going to need them again! Our Food Optimising plan isn’t a diet that members follow for a little while and then ‘come off’ when they’ve reached their target weight. At group each week we support members to make healthy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that they can keep up for life so they really do slim for good." Kristin, who has lost 4st 8lb since September 2013 and dropped from a dress size 22 to 14, says: "I found it really liberating to get rid of all my old clothes and I’m not worried about ever needing them again because this is me now – there’s no going back! It’s not just a more healthy diet that I love since I joined Slimming World, I’m much more active now too. I cycle regularly and it’s all just part of my new life, so much so that I sometimes forget I wasn’t always like this. And it’s wonderful to think that I’ve supported the other members of the group to achieve their own weight loss dreams at the same time." Cancer Research UK have welcomed the clothes in all shapes, sizes and styles and were thrilled to receive such a huge donation of clothing from the Chipping Sodbury Slimming World group.

IN THE GARDEN WITH JILL FENWICKTHE GARHello EveryoneDEN WITH JILL FENWICK IN

After the luscious deluge of colour that May and June bring, these summer months can be disappointing in the garden if the planting has not been thought through. Once the Forget-me nots have faded, the remaining gaps can look alarmingly bare. To replace the blue, perennial Geranium ‘Rozanne’ will quickly fill the gaps and likewise Borage, whose flowers look so good in glasses of Pimms. For a really dramatic splash of red, there is nothing like Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ (photo left) to set fire to your borders in summer. A few years ago, I carefully chose the pale yellow Achillea ‘Credo’ to plant alongside it, but the Garden Centre had mixed up the labels. Instead of ‘Credo’ it turned out to be Achillea ‘Terracotta’ which like so many mistakes, turned out better than if I had planned it. If your precious spare time is taken up by mowing vast expanses of lawn, leave some of it to grow naturally, and you will be surprised at how many wildflowers will turn up to attract the bees and wildlife. Meadows are very fashionable at the moment, but the photos you see in glossy magazines of large swathes of poppies and Corncockles, have been created by a great deal of hard work. This often involves removing the topsoil and applying gallons of weedkiller. I prefer the easier route, and now have a lovely circle of ‘meadow’ in my garden into which I plant plugs of Buttercup, Ranunculus acris, the Meadow Geranium Geranium pratense, and bulbs of Narcissus and Fritillaria meleagris. For inspiration, visit Acton Court in Iron Acton as it has the most wonderful meadows that will take your breath away. Swathes of pink Red Campion, Yellow Rattle and Ox-eye Daisies combined with a background of ancient walls adorned with rambling roses, is the perfect summer treat. Happy Gardening!

Photos from My Slide Collection Part 2

In the process of digitising my 35mm slide collection I have come across pictures which I had almost forgotten I had. Many readers will remember the late Doc Casson, who photographed the huge changes that took place in the area in the late 1960s. When he left the area he generously donated his collection of slides to the Historical Society. The pictures below are from that collection In last month’s Boundary Magazine I showed scenes from Yate which have changed beyond all recognition. This month I show a few more from around the area, all taken around fifty years ago..

Hogweed TroTTers News aNd wHaT’s oN .

Sterling effort of the month award must go to Neil Hopkins finishing South Africa's world famous 56 mile Comrades Marathon in temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. Fantastic effort Neil.

Closer to home, John Wheeler's hard training paid off, as he slashed 30 minutes off his Marathon PB at The North Dorset Village Marathon. Ruth Medcroft also put in a great performance, getting a new pb at the Milton Keynes Marathon. Marathon number two of the year for Shane Toogood at Edinburgh, a good time of 3:22:37 ahead of Mark Offer in 3:27:39 (pb). Members also enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining evening of nonsense at the Yate Outdoor Sports Complex on their track. All sorts of racing and fun including some dubious handicapping decisions, indeed one contestant was hospitalised with wounded pride (allegedly...) The annual 10k race that is the Kevin McConville Memorial Hogweed Trot was again faultlessly organised by Race Director Rachel Bennett and her team of volunteers. Of many noticeable Hogweed performances, 1stback was Phil Sampson in 37.08 and it was splendid to see Dave Gynn return to racing after a long and patient recuperation from serious injury- well done Dave for sticking it out and pursuing your goal with such dedication.

Dave Glynn

Finally Stu Wilkie came in in a truly mesmerising 5th place finish at the Dartmoor Discovery Ultra Marathon. He was ably assisted in polishing off the post race rice pudding by other finishers James Tyack, Jason “did I tell you my Achilles hurt?” Bidwell and Bruce Sellers. Stu Wilkie and James Tyack (R)

Gromit Unleashed! is a major artwork trail in Bristol and surrounding areas, raising funds for the Bristol Children's Hospital charity Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal. Starting on 1st July, eighty Gromits, each individually designed and painted will appear. Our front cover star is called “Twitcher”, designed by Artist/Illustrator Marie Simpson and he will be located in the garden of the Beaufort Arms in Hawkesbury Upton! For more information visit:

www.gromitunleashed.org.uk

We caught up with Twitcher’s artist/designer Marie recently... Marie, many congratulations on having your Gromit design "Twitcher " picked by Mark and Fiona at the Beaufort Arms from a huge choice, can you tell me what inspired your design? I love my garden and all my plants and wildlife, so I just wanted my Gromit to reflect my world, so looked out the window and watched the birds on the bird feeder and without over thinking it I was drawing birds on the entry form. It must have taken many hours of work to paint the Gromit, did you have any problems with translating the design from paper to 3D? I have two little girls 1 and 3, so I just worked on Gromit as and when I got a chance; nap times, evening etc. For a while he was on the kitchen table I painted at one end and I we had our dinner at the other end of the table, we all got used to Gromit up there. It was very funny when people came to visit! “Why is there a giant dog on the table?!” I used him as a centre piece for the girls’ Birthday party, he was on the table with party food all around.

42

I know you are now based in Scotland but can you tell me more about your career in animation and illustration? For 10 years I worked in London in illustration and animation for on line advertising. I wanted to move home to the family farm just outside Aberdeen and settle down. I've been home now for 5 years, I'm married to Ewan and we have 2 girls, Anna 3 and Heidi 1. I'm only working part time now I'm a full time mum,

so doing a fun project to help the hospital sounded like a good idea. (“Bored house wife enters competition and giant dog arrives!”) Have you ever visited this area of the West Country before and are you coming to see " Twitcher " this summer? I've been to 2 animation festivals in Bristol many years ago, very lovely place I had a great time. Unfortunately it is a long way from Aberdeen with small chil-

dren so might not make it down to see Gromit. Have you been involved in big public art events similar to Gromit Unleashed! before? What are your hopes and plans for the future? I've not done a public art event before but I did do Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital’s digital Christmas card about 5 years ago, which raised a lot of money. I'm with an agency now called Pickled Ink and I hope to keep freelancing though them. www.pickledink.com Thank you Marie, I think your design is lovely and Twitcher will prove a very popular Gromit! Best wishes for the future and we hope you can make it down to visit us soon - Angie

Mark Steeds, landlord at The Beaufort Arms has some special events planned this summer (see panel right). Twitcher arrives on 1st July and stays until 8th September, after which he will go to the public auction to raise funds for the Wallace and Gromit Grand Appeal. Mark told me why he had chosen to become involved in Gromit Unleashed! .... “Two things came together at the same time to make us want to do this: Our own much loved wooden sculpture of the Silver Yale of Beaufort succumbed to termites and our bad winter – it finally blew over! And it’s our 20th year in the Beaufort – something we wanted to mark by doing something special. Being a small independent country pub it’s quite a departure for us to join ‘the big boys’ but we thought ‘what the hooey’ we’re only here once (even if it did cost us a mint). It’s a tremendous cause and we’ve loved Gromit from the start. Fiona chose the design (I wanted a pirate version!) but on reflection it was the perfect choice for us with us being in the country. Lots of real life Twitchers use us and we’ve got a great relationship with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust nearby in Lower Woods.”

Special Gromit Events

Monday July 1st ‘Unveiling of Gromit’ by Hawkesbury Primary School Monday July 8th ‘Morris & Gromit’ evening fun with Winterbourne Down Border Morris Dancers dancing around our famous pooch, 8pm Morris time. Saturday 20th July, 2pm-5pm - UKULELE Gromit Sing-along and Garden Party Saturday August 10th ‘The Gromit Open’ 24th Hawkesbury Open Golf Championship, evening entertainment. Sunday September 8th ‘Along the Edge with Gromit’ Chipping Sodbury Rotary’s annual fund raiser.

Above: the Beaufort Arms Right: Twitcher with Marie’s daughter Anna (front) and niece Emma.

Nick Park, Creator of Wallace & Gromit (above) says: "I can't wait to see how Gromit will look decorated by so many different artists. I love the concept of these art trails and to have ‘Gromit at large’ is slightly scary in a nice way for me, but also an incredible honour.”

Coalpit Heath Cricket Club News

One of the oldest rivalries in sport - The Ashes – is coming to England this summer and the cricket club is the ideal place to watch as England’s heroes such as Peterson, Cook and Bell do battle with the Aussies. The cricket club will be opening its doors to the whole local community on the weekend of July 13th and 14th where you will be able to watch the cricket live on Sky Sports. There will also be a chance for those inspired by the action to have a go themselves, with a game of Kwik Cricket or practice in our nets. We are really proud of our warn and friendly clubhouse and to celebrate 25 years since it opened, we are holding a special weekend of events over the August bank holiday weekend 24th – 26th August. The celebrations will culminate in a match between former and current players on bank holiday Monday. As well as the cricket, there will be a BBQ and entertainment. Anyone who has been part of the cricket club as a player or a social member, over the last 25 years – or longer - is welcome to come along to join in the celebrations. It is sure to be a fun and memorable occasion! To find out more about the cricket club visit their web site at www.coalpitheathcc.org.uk or call 01454 772833 (Evenings only).

FARM TAILS Summer is here and we’ve been making the most of the sunshine on the farm. We’ve taken the first cut of silage and the grass is growing so quickly that the second cut shouldn’t be far off. Silage is grass that has been cut and gathered without drying it (as you would to make hay) and stored under plastic sheeting to prevent the grass from drying out and to enable it to ferment. This produces a sweet feed for the animals during the winter when fresh grass is scarce. Hopefully, if the weather behaves we’ll be making hay soon too so we’ll be well stocked for the chilly months. The piglets have been moved out the shed and into the paddock. They are enjoying the fresh air and neighbours – our big calves. The little chunkers are now four months old and back living with their mother after we weaned them off her milk. They have already rooted up some of their pen so we have to rotate them around the field so they don’t cause too much havoc! They love playing with their football –though poor old mummy pig gets a bit exhausted being the goalie all the time! We have also bought some new calves – seven dinky things from Somerset. They are Aberdeen Angus and British Blues which are excellent beef breeds and the calves are already growing quickly, although they are still just babies. We have just weaned them off their milk so they are currently a bit grumpy and very noisy! Preparations has started to get the sheds and fencing around the paddocks ship shape and Bristol fashion for the arrival of the goslings and turkeys in a few weeks. It is lovely to have the little fluffy birds back on the farm but it is also the start of the countdown to Christmas....let’s get back out and enjoy the sunshine whilst we still can! Saddleback Sodbury Cycling Sportive 2013 to Support Jessie May Trust The Rotary Club of

Chipping Sodbury recently announced that its second annual Cycling Sportive will support The Jessie May Trust, a Kingswood-based Charity who provide free of charge nursing care at home for children living with terminal illnesses. The Club has also attracted a major sponsor for its second annual Sportive in local Yate Company ‘Saddleback’ - the number one distributor of performance cycling products to the UK industry. ‘We are absolutely delighted to be in a position to help to raise funds for such a worthy cause as Jessie May’ commented event organizer Rotarian Bill Bennett, ‘and of course to have secured sponsorship from such a major name is the icing on the cake’ Bill continued. The 2013 Saddleback Sodbury Cycling Sportive takes place on Sunday 18th August starting at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club. The inaugural 2012 Sportive attracted 376 riders, far in excess of expectations. Following huge interest in the event the organisers have decided to limit entry to 750 riders this year and are encouraging entry at the earliest possible time to avoid disappointment. The event is very much a personal challenge and not a race, it offers a varied ride starting and finishing in the medieval town of Chipping Sodbury. 30 mile, 60 mile and 100 mile routes ensure that the event caters for all levels of cycling ability and fitness. The route takes participants through some of the prettiest highways and byways and combines some challenging steep climbs with flat and fast sections of the Cotswold Edge. Routes and details of how to take part are now available at www.sodburysportive.co.uk TOO WET FOR DUCKS? The inclement weather again played a key role on Sunday 16 June when about 25 intrepid cyclists were waved off in the rain from the Clock Tower by the Mayor of Sodbury Town Council, Wendy Whittle. The two free rides (for Adults and Families) were some of the final events of this year’s successful Chipping Sodbury Festival. The Cycle Rides, underwritten by Bike Week 2013, were operated by the Yate Sodbury & District U3A. Before the rides, a dozen or so bikes were checked by Blast Cycles operating a free “Dr Bike” service. The riders covered over 450 miles between them, on routes around local lanes and cycle tracks. The 25 mile ride, went as far as Luckington & later in the day, the family ride (shown leaving the High Street in the attached Photo*) reached Iron Acton outskirts on a 12 mile route, with children completing a word search competition with a Father’s Day theme. The first prize of a Giro Cycling helmet was donated by the Yate Bike Station. The runner up prizes are vouchers from Terrys & from Tesco. The prize giving ceremony will be held at a U3A event in August. Cyclists on both rides expected to finish their rides with some well earned refreshments, at the Wildlife Trust’s annual Duck Race in Jubilee Park. However a last minute inspection revealed that the recent heavy rain had presented a safety hazard, hence the duck race was cancelled, causing some amusement because again there was too much water even for ducks. Happily, access was obtained to the Baptist Church hall and the Wildlife trust kindly organised the refreshments there instead. Feedback from cyclists on both rides was universally encouraging, and the organisers hope for better weather in 2014.

Return Of Clare Teal Prompts Box Office Rush Following the huge success of Clare Teal’s sell out June concert at the Chipping Sodbury Jazz Festival, (organised by Sodbury Chamber of Commerce), Clare will be back in town for another concert “Clare Teal’s Festive Fiesta” on Wednesday 4th December. The group of 27 had arrived in the town by coach and car on the Friday evening. Saturday was spent with hosts. On Sunday there was a walk by the canal in Framptonon-Severn, led by Laurence Walker, and in the afternoon a visit to Dyrham Park. On Monday the coach took the French visitors to Bristol, where they saw Bristol Cathedral and St Nicholas Market, and went on a guided tour in French with a Blue Badge Guide. They left Chipping Sodbury on the Monday evening. All those who took part enjoyed their stay, and appreciated the friendship shown by their hosts, the visits and welcome. They are ready to come again! Although many of those taking part in the visit had not been before and had been a little anxious at the beginning, they said they would like to host when Sodbury Twinning goes over to Cesson next year.
