Nando Gets Hot And Bothered At The Movies!

Phew!! They say Some Like it Hot but not me! I mean you'd have to be Dumbo to like anything In The Heat of the Night wouldn't you? Actually I speak too soon I did spot a Cat on a Hot Tin Roof dancing about, now that was pretty funny! he he! I mean really, he'd have to be Clueless to be up there in the first place during The Big Heat wouldn't he?! no! no!! I shouldn't mock, perhaps he had Vertigo? But really it has been far too hot! They took me for a walk in Gosford Park yesterday which would have been nice apart from The Thirty Nine Steps they made me run up which left me Breathless but I did have a Brief Encounter while I was there which led me to have some Great Expectations but I can't tell you any more as my Jaws must stay shut, no! No!! they must, honest!....Dangerous Liaisons you know, I can say no more ;-) Although I do have Total Recall about the meeting it's a Catch 22 situation so best I stay silent on the matter. Suffice to say it involved a bunch of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels! Speaking of scoundrels Who Framed Roger Rabbit !? I had to set him free... after all It's A Wonderful Life when I can live out My Life As A Dog in chasing him around, he he!! I keep telling him Don't Look Back! or he will learn For Whom The Bell Tolls after all I

don't have to Dial M For Murder it's part of my doggy DNA! It's just a Fatal Attraction that I seem to have with small furry things! I can't help myself! ;-) My word! I'm like Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde aren't I? One minute I'm freeing my mate Roger and the next I'm hunting him! Ain't life grand! Mary Poppins couldn't organise it any better! Now if I could just find out a way To Kill A Mocking Bird it could be my best year yet! But still, it is simply TOO HOT!! The Big Sleep is a distant memory replaced by an endless Groundhog Day and a Night of The Living Dead as we toss and turn. We really are Les Miserables! Bedclothes and everything else gets discarded...suffice to say I have a new understanding of the term The Full Monty! It was like sharing a bed with Beauty and The Beast! and with her, who is nearly about to pop with a baby, it's not a pretty sight I can tell you! I hope The Big Chill comes soon before I lose all Sense And Sensibility! I'd better go now, I'm going to try and find that Rain Man he should be able to cool things down a bit! Mind you if I don't find him I've heard a rumour about a Chicken Run which sounds very interesting! Bye for now from a very hot (and slightly weird) Nando.

Good Quality Tenants Rent Good Quality Properties As the current rental property market conditions continue the average tenancy term is increasing and tenants are choosing to stay put much longer. Consequently they are taking more trouble over their choice. We encourage all our landlords to place an emphasis on the presentation of their properties to maximise their appeal and tick all the boxes when it comes to tenants’ requirements. Our top tips are: 1.First impressions count. Give your property curb appeal and make sure the garden is well maintained. 2.Focus on what matters. Tenants look for modern bathrooms and kitchens. Money invested in these will add to the appeal of your property. 3.Make life easy. The prospect of low maintenance particularly in the garden always appeals. 4.Engage neutral. Neutral wall and flooring colours are best as tenants dislike being stuck with bright colours.

A Nail Revolution! By Marie-Louise Coster

Shellac took the beauty world by storm just over 2 years ago. When it was launched it was an absolute phenomenon and one that I never thought would be reeated…….but I was wrong! The makers of Shellac have now developed a new nail polish – Vinylux. Vinylux is quite a revelation, it’s a standard nail polish in the respect of how it is applied and removed – meaning that you can remove it yourself (unlike Shellac). However, unlike standard nail polish Vinylux:

Vinylux has arrived at All About Mi!

Lasts for 7 days. Takes only 8 and a half minutes to dry (unlike the 4 hours that standard nail polish takes to dry thoroughly). It is easily removed with normal nail polish remover – meaning that you can take it off yourself at home, so if you get bored you can easily change it for another colour! It is a self-adhering colour coat – meaning there is no need for a base coat. It stays nice and shiny and doesn’t go dull and matt like normal nail polish

There are over 60 colours available! Better still the most popular Shellac colours are available in Vinylux, so you can repair your Shellac if you chip it whilst on holiday, you could even do your own mini pedi to match with your Shellac fingers, or just buy your favourite colour to use in between treatments! With Vinylux the colour goes straight onto the nail, without a base coat, in two coats. This is followed by a thicker top coat that goes over the coloured layer to give a gel like finish and keep the colour locked to the nail. Within the top coat there are photo initiators to set it, meaning that the durability of the polish is increased with natural light. Vinylux is easy to use and is a fab salon treatment!

Polish Reinvented! Receive a Vinylux Manicure & Pedicure for just £35 during August Find Us On Facebook :: Follow Us On Twitter @allaboutmi1

It is available at All About Mi NOW as both a treatment and a retail product so what are you waiting for?! Polishes retail for £10 or the salon treatment (which takes approximately 1 hour, includes cuticle work, filing and massaging) costs £20 for a Manicure & £25 for a Pedicure. Receive A Vinylux Manicure & Pedicure during August at All About Mi For £35!

Many gardens are lacking vitality and colour at this time of year and yet they do not need to. The roses may be past their best but perennials such as the purple cone flower Echinacea purpurea, and Japanese anemones will continue flowering for some time. Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ with its tall white flowers is brilliant for lighting up dry shady corners. I am planning to plant a long border of them in front of my dark Viburnum hedge where they will flower for several weeks.

Echinicea purpurea

Plants that have already set seed can now be harvested. Many will sow themselves but it is always good to pass them on to friends. Miss Wilmott, a renowned Victorian plantswoman, used to fill her pockets with the seeds of Eryngium giganteum and when visiting her friends’ gardens, surreptitiously sprinkled them amongst the borders. The following year they would appear in a blaze of glory and became known as ‘Miss Wilmott’s Ghost’.

Many tender plants such as Hebes and Penstemons suffered badly last winter. Now is the time to take cuttings to ensure that you have a continuous supply. They all root easily round the insides of a plastic pot covered with a plastic bag and kept out of the sun. Dipping the cut Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ ends in hormone rooting powder is often helpful. For a reliable crop of lettuce to harvest throughout the winter and into spring, sow Lettuce ‘All Year Round’ now. Even after the heavy snow and frosts last winter, we still had an amazing glut of lettuces and had to give most of them away. There is still so much to look forward to in the garden. Next month the ornamental grasses will be at their peak. Can’t wait!

Dog Rose Gromit Needs Your help….

A C Services Southern Facebook QR Code

This summer A C Services (Southern) Ltd a local company based in Yate, are very proud to be sponsoring one of the giant Gromit statues that can be found throughout Bristol from July until September. Gromit Unleashed is a massive fund-raising project for Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal in aid of the Bristol Childrens Hospital and their company Gromit Dog Rose is asking for your help. Please go to the A C Services Southern Facebook page and ‘like’ us. We will donate 50p for each like up to a maximum of £1,000. At the beginning of July we received the exciting news that our Gromit has been chosen as one of the mini Gromit ceramic figurines which are being sold as official Gromit Unleased merchandise. We are giving away one of the Dog Rose Gromit figurines so why not enter the draw at the same time? Our beautifully painted Gromit “Dog Rose” can be found outside Tyndale Baptist Church on Whiteladies Road, Bristol. He has been lovingly created by Ros Franklin and joins 79 other Gromits that were unleashed on 1st July. If you do get a chance to visit Bristol this summer please stop by and say hello to Dog Rose. Please join in the summer fun and upload your photos with him for all to share on our Facebook page. Thank you for your help.

Along the Edge with Gromit - Fundraising Walks for Charity - SUNDAY 8th SEPTEMBER 2013 This year Rotary’s annual charity walk Along The Edge is teaming up with Aardman’s popular character Gromit to raise money for worthwhile causes - 50% of the money will be donated to The Grand Appeal, providing much needed funds for Bristol Children’s Hospital, and 50% will go to the walker’s own chosen charity. The walk will take place from 8.30am on Sunday 8th September and starts and ends in the garden of the Beaufort Arms in Hawkesbury Upton. A 5ft statue of a decorated Gromit called Harmony will be in the garden to welcome all walkers and to oversee the event. There is a choice of 4 or 8 mile routes with superb scenery, enabling both young and older walkers to enjoy beautiful countryside whilst supporting excellent causes. The two circular walks are via Kilcott Valley and/or Bodkin Wood. Anyone interested in taking part should register before the walk by phoning John Wells 01454 218549 or Barry Riley 01454 314192 Pictured left is ‘Roger’, designed by Oscar and British Academy Award winning Richard Williams, who was the Animation Director for the film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”. The design was painted by artist Vivi Cuevas. Roger is sponsored by Soft Furnishing Company Top To Bottom Ltd and is located in Fountain Square Staple Hill in Bristol. Frank Francis of Top To Bottom told me that he was very pleased to support the good work of the Children's Hospital and so far, thousands of people have been visiting Roger and many are taking photographs too. Nick Park, Creator of Wallace & Gromit (left) says: "I can't wait to see how Gromit will look decorated by so many different artists. I love the concept of these art trails and to have ‘Gromit at large’ is slightly scary in a nice way for me, but also an incredible honour.”

King Edmund Gym Club

By Simon Parkinson The waiting is over – we have finally secured ourselves a brand-new home! Patience has certainly been a virtue for everyone associated with King Edmund Gym Club, who are proud to have taken up residence at Yate International Gymnastics Centre at long last. While the last few months have been long and, at times, frustrating as we’ve waded tirelessly through masses of red tape in order to reach this point, all that has quickly been forgotten because so much is, and has been, happening as we’ve eagerly set about the business of transforming the one-time bowls hall at Yate Leisure Centre into a world-class acrogymnastics facility. Anyone striding into the room – which is usually full of temporary badminton courts at this time of year – can be forgiven for thinking they have wandered into the wrong location! Structurally things have begun to change as we’ve set out to put long-standing plans into place, such as the erection of an impressive multi-sensory enclosure for disabled children and youngsters with learning difficulties. There will be new classes for the public – adults and kids alike – to participate in, vault and floor and cheerleading sessions among them. Of course this entire exhausting, exciting and thoroughly-worthwhile project has come at a cost, although we’re grateful to the London Olympics’ Inspired Facilities project for the £50,000 that has met around half the cost of the funding required. The rest of the outlay has been provided by club coffers and the support and dedication of our fund-raising committee. We’re hoping our new gymnastics venue will be fully operational early September-time and we are very much looking forward to working in partnership with Circadian Trust and South Gloucestershire Council, both of whom have been very supportive as we’ve striven to ‘seal the deal’ in securing licence to go ahead with the project. So why are we back at the leisure centre, only four years after the switch to the Sports Shed on Yate’s Armstrong Way? The answer is simple . . . more room is available here to function effectively and efficiently. King Eddies, as we’ve become well-known known as, already have a membership of around 1,000 children of all ages and abilities, a quite breathtaking figure when you compare it to the size of the many worthy sports club in and around the region. But we don’t want to stop there, not least because there are youngsters on our waiting list eagerly anticipating an opportunity to join us. To help cope with that demand, while enhancing our chances of success going forward, we now have a clutch of ‘satellite centres’ based at Pomphrey Hill, Bradley Stoke and Emersons Green, and we’d like to add to that list over time. We also wish to continue competing fully at the very highest level of international acrogymnastics – two of our top performers, Shanie-Redd Thorne and her partner Danielle Jones, were gearing up for the highly-prestigious World Games in Columbia representing Great Britain as The Boundary went to press. Already our new facility has attracted crowds in their thousands, to the annual Spring Spectacular and top national and international competitions a few short months ago. Now the hall is officially ours, we are certain that the facilities on offer will top anything our rival acrogymnastic counterparts are able to provide. A London 2012 Olympic floor, recently purchased by us, has already been put to good use by our gymnasts! Whether you’re spectating, competing, practising or an intrigued visitor, we hope to see you at Yate International Gymnastics Centre very soon.

Who owned Sodbury? When I go round the area giving talks and walks, I am often asked the question “Who owned Sodbury?” and the answer is not that simple. I have a number of documents and papers which list the owners - or Lords of the Manor – from the tenth century to current times, but, as ever, there are numerous inconsistencies between them. In this article I will try to summarise the ownership as best I can. But be warned, I have worked from numerous sources and references to old documents and transcripts. It seems that some of the old documents are likely to have been forgeries or based on myths and legend. One deep academic study I have used refers to some of the early records as “pure moonshine”! What chance has a mere local historian got? At the time of the Norman Conquest, Britric, Earl of Gloucester, held large areas of land including what is now Chipping and Old Sodbury. The local area was within the Edderstone Hundred. Little Sodbury was in the Grumbolds Ash Hundred and was held by Aluuard. It has to be remembered that throughout the Middle Ages the monarch or religious establishments controlled the land and then gifted it to their friends and supporters - and retrieved if things didn’t go well. After the Norman Conquest the lands were seized and Little Sodbury was given to Hugh Maminot (nephew of the Bishop of Lisieux. Britric’s lands were passed to Queen Matilda and then eventually to Count Odo, Earl of Champagne. By 1096 the lands were passed to Stephen and this is the period when the Norman family of Crassus come onto the scene and reference is made to “Sobbeburia” being in Crassus’s grant. William Crassus is generally credited as the founder of Chipping Sodbury – or Market Sodbury- around 1147, but it is not that simple. There were several generations of William Crassus, and even cases of two Williams in the same generations “primogenitus” -firstborn and “parva”- the younger. Just to confuse things more, a number of them held the common title “Le Gros” - otherwise “Fatty”. Whichever William it was, it was that family that created our Medieval new town and obtained market charters from the King By about 1275 the Crassus family moved to Ireland in a land exchange with the de Weyland family – William , Thomas and then Richard. By around 1300 the lands had been passed on again, this time to the de Clare family – two generations both called Gilbert. The younger Gilbert was killed at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 and lands then passed to Elinore wife of Hugh Despenser. This turned out to be a turbulent time as lands seems to have been confiscated a number of times and then re-restored to the Beauchamps, (Earl of Warwick and Ann Countess). Eventually the king, Henry VII, took back the lands in 1487. While all this was going on, Little Sodbury saw its lands shuffled between various owners eventually ending in the hands of one John Walshe of Olveston. His son, also John, inherited the estate in 1502. It was this John who hired William Tyndale –the translator of the Bible - as tutor to his children. In 1547 Henry VIII bestowed the lands of Old Sodbury and the town of Chipping Sodbury to the Walshe family - so putting the manors together as one unit for the first time. By 1608 the manors had passed to the Stephens family and at some time (1712?) they had moved to the large house at Lyegrove. This made Lyegrove the “Manor House” of the the Sodburies. After Edward Stephens’ death in 1728, Robert Packer (a relative by marriage) became Lord of the Manor. Robert’s wife was Mary, who was daughter of Sir Richard Winchcombe Bt of Bucklebury Manor, Berkshire. Robert and Mary’s daughter, Elizabeth, married into the Hartley family. From 1832 to 1881 the “Major” Winchcombe Henry Howard Hartley was Lord of the Manors of Sodbury and Bucklebury. He played an active role in our area. His name is still remembered in Hartley Close and Hartley House. Then, around 1882, the manor of Sodbury was sold to the Duke of Beaufort. The Hartleys retreated to Bucklebury Manor. Later the Sodbury lands went into private hands, although the Duke of Beaufort still has rights pertaining to the manor. As a postscript. Bucklebury Manor has, within the past few months, been sold to the Middleton family so restoring it as a home with links to the Royal family. Provided by Jim Elsworth Copyright

FARM TAILS! The goslings have arrived on the farm, so we’re full steam ahead to Christmas now! The little chickas have come all the way from Norfolk to their paddock here, at three weeks old. At this age, the goslings are yellow and fluffy with pinkish beaks and legs. As they grow up they will grow their hallmark white feathers, their beaks and legs will turn orange and their eyes cornflower blue. They become very handsome! The goslings are fed home grown barley and graze the fresh grass in their field. This allows the goslings to grow naturally and slowly, eventually producing exceptional, award winning geese. We sell the majority of our geese at Christmas time, although each year we sell more and more at Michaelmas, another event traditionally celebrated with a goose. We started our little company in 2010, rearing just 30 geese and, by Jove, we worked hard that year – plucking each goose by hand (which took about two hours per bird!). The following year we upped our numbers to 50, bought a mechanical plucker (thank goodness!) and acquired our first lot of pesky pigs. These days we have not one, but two (!) pluckers, which remove the majority of the feathers, though all our birds are still finished by hand for assured quality. This year we are thrilled to be able to offer Bronze turkeys and Aylesbury ducks as well as our beautiful geese...not forgetting our homemade pigs in blankets! So if you are thinking of doing something extra special this Christmas, think about getting a bird from The Jolly Goose Cº.* Wishing you all a wonderful August! A Look At The Fleece Inn, Hillesley – A Great Pub With A Unique Story

“When the village pulled together so quickly to save The Fleece I was astounded. I am no less amazed at how far we have come in the meantime”. This is the view of Nigel Vaughan – and he should know! Nigel led the project teams during the pub acquisition, and is the chairman of Hillesley Community Pub Limited, in which 120 people bought shares. Twelve months on and The Fleece is in good health. The team of Andrew ‘Panda’ Jones (Manager) and Ben Pirie (Head Chef) are doing a great job, focusing on high quality at affordable prices in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Ben’s excellent new menu and blackboard specials are proving popular. The Fleece is a Free House, meaning it can select which beverages it stocks; the focus is on great local real ales and good quality ciders. Last year’s refurbishment resulted in a light and comfortable interior, and in this summer’s fantastic weather (so far!) the beer garden and play area for children have come into their own. With 120 community shareholders The Fleece enjoys good local support, and it is also proving highly popular with visitors from neighbouring villages and further afield, especially diners, cyclists and walkers on The Cotswold Way. Customer feedback suggests that it’s well worth a visit!

The Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club The Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club was founded in 1983 by a group of local men who wanted to operate a yacht club even though there is no navigable water in the area, the town being at the foot of the Cotswolds, with the only waterway being the River Frome which flows through through Chipping Sodbury on its way to Bristol Docks. However, the club has ambitions to widen the River Frome, and to reopen it through Bristol, as it was concreted over many years ago, now flowing under Cabot Circus and Broadmead. Yachtsmen would then be able to navigate their yachts from Chipping Sodbury into Bristol Docks, along the River Avon and into the Bristol Channel. Unfortunately, the new Waitrose bridge now presents a local hazard as it is fixed, and not a swing bridge, so the club is working on a new design of yacht with a collapsible mast, which would also be useful when the River Frome goes underground at Cabot Circus. Although not yet owning its own premises in Chipping Sodbury, the club operates a Moorings Office from Tudor House, where meetings are also held. Should anyone be interested in reserving a mooring in the town, this is where the Harbourmaster and Moorings Secretary are based. If global warming continues, and the River Frome has to be diverted through High Street and Broad Street, those who have already booked their moorings will have taken prime spots; a 40 foot canal boat from Exeter has already reserved an excellent berth outside of the Beaufort Hunt Inn. In the meantime, the club pursues a vigorous social calendar, with an annual regatta, and various other events. Each year the club spends a weekend away as a guest of a Yacht Club; example in 2012 attended Cowes week where it won the 3 foot class of yacht and were hosted by the Royal Solent Yacht Club. In July 2013 the CSYC will be guests of the Royal Albert Yacht Club, Portsmouth, and in 2014 will visit the Isle of Man, and in 2015 already are planning a weekend in Dartmouth.

Celebrating 30 years ! The CSYC are well known in Chipping Sodbury as a fun loving group with important aims and ideals and are revered as a rather eccentric and treasured part of the town. On official duty, members are expected to wear a “uniform” of blue blazer, club tie and badge, and the famous white yachtie trousers, which makes club members instantly recognisable in town. Over the years, the club has been known for their jolly japes, for example in building a lighthouse which was positioned at Yate Rocks, and the yellow submarine, which surfaced at Tanhouse Lake, see picture. There was also a the shark that surfaced in the same lake, and one April Fool’s Day the Club erected a giant sign at Nibley to publicise the purchase of land for a new marina and headquarters. And many were intrigued by the drawing of the town with the River Frome diverted through it! (reproduced opposite) Pictured (right, from top) are senior Club Officers: Commodore Barry Ansell, Vice Commodore and Senior Marine Designer Bruce Hosie, and Rear Commodore and Ships Lookout John Powell. The immediate future of the club is in good hands with a succession of excellent officers such as these ready to take over the tiller of the famous CSYC! The CSYC will celebrate its 30 years with a spectacular Ball at The Town Hall in October which is already a sell out! Commodore Ansell wishes all residents of Chipping Sodbury an excellent year and thanks them for their support and kindness to the CSYC over the past 30 years, and looks forward to sailing on to further landmarks in future!

Bunny Groves, Secretary General.

The Club has also attracted a major sponsor for its second annual Sportive in local Yate Company ‘Saddleback’ - the number one distributor of performance cycling products to the UK industry. ‘We are absolutely delighted to be in a position to help to raise funds for such a worthy cause as Jessie May’ commented event organizer Rotarian Bill Bennett, ‘and of course to have secured sponsorship from such a major name is the icing on the cake’ Bill continued. The 2013 Saddleback Sodbury Cycling Sportive takes place on Sunday 18th August starting at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club. The inaugural 2012 Sportive attracted 376 riders, far in excess of expectations. Following huge interest in the event the organisers have decided to limit entry to 750 riders this year and are encouraging entry at the earliest possible time to avoid disappointment. The event is very much a personal challenge and not a race, it offers a varied ride starting and finishing in the medieval town of Chipping Sodbury. 30 mile, 60 mile and 100 mile routes ensure that the event caters for all levels of cycling ability and fitness. The route takes participants through some of the prettiest highways and byways and combines some challenging steep climbs with flat and fast sections of the Cotswold Edge. Routes and details of how to take part are now available at Please mention the Boundary when responding to adverts. Enquiries: 01454 774061

Keynsham Machine Knitting Club

We meet on the second Monday of the month at Sterling Way Community Centre. Keynsham BS31 1DF 2pm-4pm. We are a friendly and supportive bunch of enthusiasts, we have two club machines to practice knitting and will be only too pleased to help new members get knitting again or learn a new skill. We try to have at least four guest speakers a year and lots of 'home grown mini dems' for members when they get stuck, want to learn a new technique or just get started with the basics. We not only make garments for ourselves and families and friends we also make a wide range of garments that are donated to hospitals to support premature baby units and other patients in need. Very useful in the present economic climate! If any readers are interested in dusting off their machines or just coming along to find out more finding out more please contact Margaret Marsh (Chair) 0117 9865559 or Pat Hames (Secretary) 01454 322553

COMMUNITY NEWS AND WHATS ON Long John Silver Trust and PROPS Trip Aboard The Matthew On Thursday 11th July members of the Long John Silver Trust joined with local charity PROPS for a “Treasure Island Cruise” aboard the Matthew in Bristol Docks. With glorious weather everyone enjoyed a memorable trip, many were in pirate dress and it seemed that many school trips that day were also similarly attired! However, we had a real parrot with us (Dumpling) who was a well-behaved star as normal (and pictured right with Mark Steeds from the LJST). The highlight of the cruise was the presentation of the Green Jolly Roger Flag, made by LJST member Sue, who received some flowers as a thank you. We were also accompanied by Gromit “NewFoundLand”, beautifully painted with a world map. PROPS are based in Fishponds and see below for more information on the important work they do. The Long John Silver Trust are hoping to establish a Treasure Island Trail around Bristol. For more information please visit

Did you know that the Matthew offers trips and can also be hired for events? Please check the website above or tel. 01179 276868
