Nando’s Ice Capades! Hello everyone! Wow! I've woken up a couple of times now and it's been all white everywhere! Apparently it's called 'snow' and well it's snow joke! I don't get it! it's small and white and fluffy just like me but I don't cause all this trouble?! Although I suppose there's only one of me and there's gazillions of those white flaky things. Hey! I wonder what trouble a gazillion Nando's could cause! he he Anyway....bang! there goes my long walks in the woods because 'it's too slippy to take car out' The best Boss Lady could manage was walking to the local parks! I had to swap chasing squirrels for chasing ducks he he! Although it didn't go exactly to plan! How was I too know?! The water looked I launched myself onto it and bang! it broke into pieces and then I'm neck deep, paddling for my life in freezing water!! Why do ducks sound like they're laughing when they quack?! the blighters! Worse still because the pond has steep concrete sides I couldn't

get out without being unceremoniously dragged ashore by my collar! 'Silly dog' said BL (or something similar) and then much to her amazement I went around the other side of the pond and did exactly the same thing again! splosh! Well it looked solid how was I to know? The second batch of snow was was sticky! When you've got short legs and long hair that's a problem as you can see from my photo! I came back with a set of snow boots on! To be fair BL tried to get them off me so I could sit or lie down but I'didn't appreciate' it so she stopped and slowly I left a trail of snow balls and puddles around the house as I thawed out! Well as they say 'it was fun while it lasted'! I feel I should point out that no ducks where ever in any danger! BL doesn't let me loose unless she's sure they are all on the water or on their island. We never go there when they are nesting etc as they wander all over the park! Also the pond is only a maximum of 3' deep and BL would have been prepared to jump in and save me (I'm sure she would, wouldn't she?!) Bye for now! Bring on the next adventure.... he he x Nando

Spring Clean your legal protection You know you should have a Will in place to look out for those you love when you die. But did you know it can be even more important to have Powers of Attorney in place - to make sure your wishes are followed if you were to become seriously ill or injured. It is time to Spring Clean the legal protection you have in place. Chipping Sodbury specialists, Simpson Solicitors, offer Boundary readers a free (no obligation) legal review and advice meeting. A Power of Attorney is the only way you can choose who you trust to speak up for you and make decisions on your behalf, if you lost capacity and were too unwell to do so yourself. Did you know, even if you are married, with no Power of Attorney in place, your other half can be left powerless to help you. But the Power has to be put in place now – whilst you are well. A Health Power means you appoint someone to give instructions and select options on your treatment to doctors and other health professionals. A recent client example was a daughter using the Power to insist her elderly mother was transferred from an all male ward in hospital - to give her dignity. They are also used to make sure that you get the end of life treatment that you’d want. A modern update on the old “do not resuscitate” instructions. We see our role as going beyond form filling and helping you with the guidance you want to leave to those you trust. A Property and Finance Power means that your bank accounts and savings are not frozen. Instead they can be accessed by the person you appoint to pay for the treatment and care you need. Practically it often means bills can be paid without family members having to get into debt supporting you. It also means they can sign for you, so that financial and property transactions can go ahead. Simpson’s Complete Service includes advising you on how best to set up the Powers to suit your family situation and needs. The practicalities of getting it right, can be a legal minefield. They guide you through it. The Complete Service also covers acting as Certificate Provider and dealing with the court registration process – so they are approved and ready to use when needed. Simpsons go even further as their one off charge covers future support to those you trust - with help in activating the Powers and providing Certified Copies that will be needed. For Boundary readers Simpsons are offering 20% off the Complete Service price, down to £329 +VAT per Power instructed by 31st May 2018. Just call 01454 322 722. If getting to the office is difficult their friendly lawyers can see you at home at no extra cost.

SODBURY & DISTRICT FLOWER ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY Next demonstration will be on April 24th 2018 at 7.30pm entitled "My life in flowers " by Julia Russett At the Old Grammar School Rooms in ChippingSodbury. For any further information please contact Mrs Rosemary Cummins on 01179373836. Chipping Sodbury WI news. Mother nature took hold and was responsible for cancelling the March meeting of the Chipping Sodbury WI. In the words of the Terminator “We will be back” on the 5th April at 7.30pm in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall. We will be holding a Home Produce stall so come along and stock up your cupboards. The night speaker will be Jo Jeffery talking about the story of the Fan. New members are always welcome so do come and give us a try on the first Thursday of the month. WI in the 1920’s: Once the war was over the newly formed WIs began to concentrate on planning programmes of activities to suit their members. This new organisation attracted members from the Lady of the Manor, to her housemaid and cook; from the local shop keeper to the wife of the farm labourer: working together in the WI helped to break down the social barriers between countrywomen who had rarely met in the past. Women had now received the vote (at least those over 30) and NFWI was anxious to encourage women to become active citizens. Lady Denman continued as Chairman; Miss Grace Hadow was vice Chairman with Mrs Helena Auerbach as Treasurer. In 1924 Jerusalem was first sung at the AGM, starting a tradition that continues to this day. By the end of the1920’s there were 4244 wi’s across the country.

Further information can be found on the WI web site

The Badapple Theatre group are celebrating 20 years touring, (poster on left). The play follows the inspirational life of Hull aviatrix Amy Johnson, the first woman to fly solo from the UK to Australia. During WW2 she had a vital role as one of a team of female pilots working as auxiliary personnel. Join Betty and Mabel, the two jovial WAF girls who follow Amy’s final mysterious wartime journey and celebrate her pioneering career. Expect a good dose of Badapple humour, as well as a poignant tribute to Hull’s ‘First Lady of the Air’. And a replica Gipsy Moth bi-plane to boot!

A short history of No 8 High Street – one time the King’s Arms In previous months I have looked at the history of a few buildings in the street. This month I write about the history and former occupants of No 8 High Street, Chipping Sodbury. One look will tell you that the house is a very ancient building with the giveaway diagonal chimneys indicating that it is a building of around 350 years old. It has many other listed features. The drawing right, probably from around 1800, shows the gables which were subsequently removed In Sturge’s 1795 survey it states that Mr Richard Tovey was the owner, and the tenant was Mrs Cooper. It was described as House, Offices and Garden. A number of records, including the recent book Butcher, Baker, Candle Maker, say that there were 23 women living there. This has led to speculation that it may have been a hat factory, or bonnet makers. The property then passed to a branch of the Watts family who were maltsters. So a brewing link started and it probably became an Inn for travellers around 1813. In 1836 the Gloucestershire Police Force was established and it seems that in1840 Chief Constable Lefray, decided to base a detachment of Police in Chipping Sodbury in this property. In 1841 the senior officer was Superintendent Thomas Gordon, who was previously a farmer in Painswick, and his 4 constables. There was also one prisoner listed! So it was the jail as well. Our Police Station was not built until 1862 it seems that some staff remained at No 8 along with other occupants, until that opened One of the occupants was Charles Milsom who is listed, initially as a coal haulier, then as a Victualler and then as running an Inn and Lodging House for travellers. Photo shows the King’s Arms, less Gables, in 1910

During the 1st World war it was requisitioned to become the Quarter Master’s Stores for the 5th Battalion Loyal North Lancs, which was based in Sodbury at the time. Photo left shows the soldiers with local children outside the front door and of course, Puck, the photographers faithful Jack Russell. At the end of the war Mr Ernest Tily acquired the property as the base for his building business. The old stables at the rear were used for his tradesmen’s workshops and that business continued until well into the mid 20th century. In 1976 Colin Hatfield bought the property and renovated it as his family home. Colin was also a potter and he adapted the old workshops for his pottery, with one as a wheel room, one as a kiln room and another as a drying room. Another feature of the property is that it has one of the underground water storage cisterns, which are quite common in Chipping Sodbury. All rain water from the roof and paths etc was directed to the cistern for use in the dry periods. The cisterns are huge, and measure about 8feet by 10ft and are about 6 feet high with a domed roof. Who said “Rain Water Harvesting” is a new invention? On a final note. I believe that it is these cisterns that give rise to the many stories of tunnels in Sodbury. Provided by Jim Elsworth with reference to Butcher Baker Candle Maker.

This comes as welcome news for those affected by this ever-growing issue, and the new funding will mean that not-for-profit organisations, such as Home Start Bristol, will be able to provide a much-needed service to complement the current support services available in the BNSSG areas. The perinatal period covers pregnancy and the year following birth. During this time, it’s possible for women to be affected by various mental health conditions, which can have a huge effect on them, and their families. If the signs are spotted early enough, and symptoms treated, most women can make a full recovery with minimum impact on their family. The fund has enabled Home Start Bristol to employ a part-time Perinatal Support Worker, who will be the first point of contact for referred families with needs relating to perinatal mental health. Following an initial period of 6-10 weeks of face to face and telephone support, the families should then be able to benefit from Home Start Bristol’s core service, with further visits from a trained volunteer. With over 30 years’ experience of supporting families, the charity understands the impact of depression and anxiety - especially if coupled with isolation. It is often a vicious circle that is hard to break out of alone. Home-Start Bristol’s approach is simple and effective - families are visited weekly by trained volunteers, who are parents themselves, and understand the challenges of family life. Beverley says:“We work alongside families, encouraging them and helping them to build confidence. This type of support benefits both children and parents, increasing their sense of wellbeing and ability to manage”. The charity relies on volunteers and runs 3 volunteer preparation courses each year. The next course starts this April so, if you would like to find out more, please visit the website: or phone 0117 950 1170.
