Nando Visits A Friend The other day I was sitting in my bed when a thought came in my head. "How long had it been?" I decided I didn't know the exact answer but I did know it had been far too long! So I decided there and then to pay a visit to my good friend Eeyore. I'm ashamed to say I have been to the wood where he lives several times but I've never made the effort to find the actual corner where his house is. No matter! I would make amends and cheer him up with a surprise visit! What fun we will have! Phew! it was harder than I thought, the wood is huge! it must be a hundred acres at least and I think I must have criss crossed 99 of them before I found the right corner (Just how many corners can there be?) Dear oh dear! what a dark and gloomy place and his house is nothing more than a pile of sticks! Still I think he was pleased to see me, and so caring, he even suggested I didn't stay too long as it gets dark quickly and I might get lost on the way home...ah! bless him! I told him not to worry as I could always follow my scent home (although I suppose that would mean criss crossing 99 acres again!) but that didn't seem to reassure him and then he worried about the weather " you'd better go soon" he kept saying "looks like rain" He's so sweet!

We chatted away as old pals do, well actually I think I did most of the chatting and he did some sighing but it was great to catch up! "Well I suppose I should be going now" I said as the air grew colder "Yes" said Eeyore. "I know" I said "before I go, lets do a 'selfie'" Unfortunately as you can see from the picture he was just out of view, but I look good don't I! "Oh! before I forget, is this yours?" I asked holding up a grey tail with a pink bow "I found it in the wood" I think I detected a smile on his old grey face "Yes it is! er....thank you" As I trotted off home I called back "Glad to help! It's been fun hasn't it! I'll come again soon!" "If you must" he replied. ha! ha! he's such a tease! bye for now from your friend Nando x

Lomi Lomi Massage By Marie-Louise Coster Although we have always known that it is nice and relaxing to have a massage, there is now scientific evidence that proves that the more massage you can allow yourself, the better you'll feel. There are many types of massage, each of which has been around for thousands and thousands of years but at times they will become more popular and evident than others. The power of touch has always been profound – after all if you bump yourself or your shoulders are sore you automatically rub the area don’t you? This is because of the natural healing power of touch – which is ultimately what massage is. Massage doesn’t just relax the body but it will also help to relax the mind and relieve you from stress and anxiety, there are lots of types of massage available depending on your personal preference. At All About Mi I offer a comprehensive range of different massages from around the world and one of my favourites is Lomi Lomi. Lomi Lomi Massage, is a traditional Hawaiian Massage derived from an ancient Polynesian technique and developed by Master Healers of Hawaii, the Kahuna lomilomi who were Priests. The Priests believed that physical discomfort and disease were the results of suppressed emotions, mental disturbances and physical disharmony. Traditional Lomi Lomi began with fasting, prayer, steam treatments and a thorough investigation into the nature of the dysfunction, this was then followed by the massage itself. Literally meaning 'Rub Rub' in Hawaiian, Lomi Lomi is one of the oldest and most powerful forms of massage and creates a mental, physical and emotional state of relaxation. As a technique, Lomi Lomi uses continual and flowing strokes that work gently and deeply into the muscles nurturing the body and enabling the recipient to relax. It is very different to any other massage and works much deeper, incorporating stretches and joint work to aid mobility. As a massage treatment it

Community news and what’s on Collision Of Yacht With New Footbridge Over River Frome The Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club made an attempt to sail a yacht along the River Frome to Bristol Docks. Sailing conditions were good, with the River swollen and higher than normal owing to the recent heavy rainfall. However, when the crew reached the footbridge, leading to Waitrose, the yacht became stuck fast against the bridge, being too tall to pass underneath. “Non Semper Optimus Vincit” The CSYC had campaigned for the Footbridge to be a swing bridge, but this was unfortunately ignored and it was built as a fixed bridge. Members of the Club were summoned to the bridge to assist with freeing the yacht and are pictured on the front cover attempting to help the crew in reversing the yacht. The Club have now postponed any further attempt at sailing to Bristol pending an appeal to the council to change the bridge to a more suitable swing bridge. Pinkers Saddlery was started 42 years ago by Christine Pinker, in the back bedroom of her family home. Her daughter was a member of the local pony club at the time and the family found it difficult to source good quality tack and rugs locally. Over the years the store has expanded to one of the largest privately owned shops of its kind in the country! As well as supplying the local equestrian community, this exceptional country store now stocks a wide range of products including pet foods and accessories, poultry and game rearing equipment, country clothing and footwear, gifts and toys. Products are competitively priced to suit all pockets and the store caters for all ages. As you would expect from what started as an equestrian store, the saddlery department is well stocked with saddles, bridles and accessories, there is also a fully qualified saddle fitter working out of the premises. A large range of accessories are also stocked, including training and lunging equipment. Pinkers also have a huge selection of rugs, hats, body protectors, boots and clothing. The friendly staff are helpful and knowledgeable in a wide range of subjects, their experiences cover the many aspects of equestrianism and country pursuits. They are trained to assist with the sizing of particular items where the correct fit is so important - for instance riding hats and body protectors - and are happy to help with any questions you may have on a product. Why not take a trip to the store which can be found just by the duck pond at Latteridge, or browse their website for more information

Fabulous Baker Brother Henry Herbert Shares His Delicious Recipe This Month For Man’s Curry

Man’s Curry

Feeds 2 men. Henry says: “It’s so easy to make a delicious curry, and the smells of slow cooking lamb and spices are second to none. The best cut for a lamb curry is neck fillet, but this can be quite pricey, so I recommend diced shoulder. It is perfectly suited for slow cooking, and has that melt-in-themouth eating quality about it. Like all stews, it is always better the next day.” For the paste:

For the meat:

4 garlic cloves 1 tbsp fresh ginger pinch of cumin, coriander, garam masala, turmeric, cinnamon 1 green and 1 red chilli, roughly chopped 2 onions, diced

First, in either a pestle and mortar or processor, blend all the paste ingredients except the onion. Take a few spoons out for the lamb, then add the onion and blend again.

Mix the diced lamb shoulder with the reserved paste, the yogurt and salt and pepper. heat a frying pan, add a little oil and brown the meat on all sides. Remove and reserve.

500g diced lamb shoulder a dollop of yogurt salt and pepper oil for frying 30g ghee (clarified butter) vegetables of your choice, such as pepper and okra, chopped 400g tin of chopped tomatoes 200ml (half a tin) of coconut milk bunch of fresh coriander

Take a deep casserole and fry the onion paste in the ghee until golden. Careful, the chilli smell can be quite potent! Add the chopped vegetables and fry for a few minutes. Add the tinned tomatoes, then swill the can out with water and add to the pan as well. (My mother Polly taught me never to waste anything, even the residue in a tomato tin, and it also saves washing the tin for the recycling.) Bring to a gentle simmer, then add the lamb and the coconut milk. Turn the heat down and gently simmer for 2 hours: the lamb should be soft and giving but still juicy. Have a final season and spoon into bowls. Tear some coriander leaves over the top.

Dan Harford Wins Vauxhall Customer Excellence Award The staff at local dealership, Dan Harford are thrilled to announce the news of their latest achievement; a prestigious Vauxhall Customer Excellence Award. Once a year, the British manufacturer recognises customer reviews and rewards top performing retailers for their exemplary levels of customer service. To celebrate this special accolade awarded to Dan Harford, Steve Wiltshire and his team were presented with their Customer Excellence Award at the dealership in Bristol. General Sales Manager, Steve Wiltshire, comments: “The team and I are over the moon with this achievement and can’t thank our customers enough for their kind words in Vauxhall’s satisfaction surveys, which enabled us to secure this fantastic accolade.” “Each and every customer that visits the dealership can rest assured that they will be receiving a detailed and personal service, ensuring the utmost is done to meet their needs. As we invest so much time and energy in customer care, we’ll be doing our very best to ensure that we score even higher next year!” The retailer was one of 45 Vauxhall retailers in the UK to achieve the highest and most impressive combined scores from Vauxhall’s Purchase Satisfaction and Service Satisfaction surveys, calculated at the end of 2013. After buying a new Vauxhall and servicing their vehicle for the first or second time, customers are invited to take part in both surveys. Over 127,000 responses were collected last year, helping to generate an accurate and continual picture of Vauxhall customer experience. Martin Lay, Head of Vauxhall Brand, comments: “At Vauxhall, we are proud that Dan Harford has pulled out all the stops to make our customers’ purchasing and servicing experiences as positive as possible. The award is testament to the hard work invested into their consistent standards and all round high performance.”

Shop Adverts - The Changing Styles The Boundary Magazine is offered free to its readers, but it is the advertisers who make this possible. All will be hoping that you will see the promotional material and call into the shops or use the service advertised. The local businesses also sponsor, or help, events such a the Chipping Sodbury Festival, Victorian Day or, more recently, the Big Lunch and a myriad of other charitable events. This is nothing new and I have been looking back at local shop adverts over the past 100 years or so. Over 100 years ago typical shop adverts were quite plain. Examples from 1911 are shown below :Drapery and provisions shops often went together and Mr Gales emporium was by the Nat West Bank – where the drive way to the bank car park is now. Note the advert states that he was a Manchester Warehouseman – that is he sold all sorts of linens. Where Franklin’s Barber shop is now was the famous Mr Powell’s cycle shop. Advert below.

He was agent for 11 makes of cycles, including the unique Dursley Pederson. He also makes a point of “Mail Carts supplied and repaired” An advert for the Phillips Saddlery business is a refection of the period. The Saddlery was where the Hearing Aid shop is now. His trade sign was the Trotting Horse. This classic sign has moved about but is still in Chipping Sodbury hanging outside Swagger.

One interesting advert is for Murray Dowding Photographer. He ran this business as an offshoot of his parents Hardware Shop in Broad Street. Note the typo for Sodbury and also note that, even in 1911, he had 350 local views for sale A slightly later postcard related advert comes in the form of cards sold by A M Thompson, Confectioner Stationer in Broad Street, produced by Raphael Tuck. The claim is that the product is “Unapproachable” which is “the verdict of the ENTIRE PRESS”. There’s nothing like a bit of modesty in one’s claims. Provided by Jim Elsworth Copyright

Jim Elsworth’s book “Sodbury Tales” is available in CS Shops and Yate Heritage Centre. Price £6.00 34 36 Please mention the Boundary when responding to adverts. Enquiries: 01454 774061

Chipping Sodbury Festival - June 13th to 22nd 2014

Plans are well ahead now for this year’s Festival and tickets will be on sale from Farrago and Out of the Blue from early April. Once again there are over 50 events in our regular Community Festival. Main events are headlined by “Jimmy Cricket’s Laughter Show” – a family comedy evening. Others are Jim Elsworth’s popular “Ever Changing Sodbury” slide show, the free “Music in the Street” – with the main act “Vegas”, the family opera Hansel and Gretel and a return of The Flowers Band for the, now famous, “Last Night of the Proms – Chipping Sodbury Style”. This year the festival will have its very own “Fashion Show”. The “Poetry Please” evening makes a return to Traditional poetry. The Lions Club “Street Fair and Carnival” brings town out in party mood towards the end of the Festival Week. Alongside these events will be the usual Quiz, children’s concerts and workshops, morning talks and demonstrations and much much more. The theme this year is Disney, so expect to see and invasion of well known characters. Full details on the Festival Website Pete Naish is cycling over the Pyrenees in May to raise funds for Chernobyl Children’s Life Line. Pete has decided to undertake a very ambitious cycling project in 2014. Starting out on May 22nd in Hendaye in the very south west of France he will ride across the Pyrenees to Banyuls–Sur–Mer on the Mediterranean before turning around and retracing his route back. The normal challenge of riding one way is usually referred to as the ‘Raid Pyreneen’ and is described as: “very tough at the best of times”. Pete however will endeavour to do this both ways and in doing so cycle over 36 mountains (Cols) with more than 20,000 metres of actual ascent. Pete hopes to complete this massive task in 10 days covering over 900 miles. Follow Pete’s progress at: and you can donate now at:

Lovely to see runners continuing their return to the fold this month- Ronan Conlon (pictured right) conquered the gruelling Grizzly Cub Xcountry, joining other HTs doing the longer Grizzly on the beautiful Devon/Dorset border, whilst Tracey Skuse is getting races under her belt again with good times in The Bath Half Marathon and the Wiltshire 10.

Having been among a good HT turnout at The Terminator 11 mile Xcountry in Pewsey, Steve Stretton (pictured left) continued his return to form with a very good 1h26m35 at the Reading HM. Sub 1h25m must on the cards! The inaugural Chipping Sodbury Parkrun of 22nd of February was an overwhelming success. 200 runners enjoyed the free to enter event. Very much supported by Hogweed Trotter members both on the organising and marshalling side as well as participating, it has been aided by fabulous weather. The event has grown each week and the increasing core of loyal participants very much embrace being part of a very special event. Every runner can be assured of a warm welcome and are encouraged in their endeavours- irrespective of their finish position. It really is quite a remarkable event and one that the organisers and participants should be rightly very proud of. Speaking of whom, the Event Director- Hogweeds Stu Wilkie (right), couldn't be at the 2nd running of the event, due to the excellent reason he was winning the 45 mile Green Man Ultra marathon. A circumnavigation of the trails around Bristol- it is not for the faint hearted. Well done Stu!

Chipping Sodbury Parkrun

With March now gone It's been a busy 5 weeks for the team at the Chipping Sodbury parkrun. Since the inaugural event on the 22nd February (photo left) the event has played host to 525 runners and walkers of all abilities covering the 5km distance over the 3 laps around the pitches. The free event takes place every Saturday morning at 9am from the ridings, home of chipping sodbury football and rugby club. Event director Stuart Wilkie praises all his team of volunteers for assisting week in week out ensuring the event runs smoothly and on time. It is the help and support that these volunteers give that makes the event what it is. Chipping Sodbury Football Club have also made the event popular by offering teas, coffees and toilet facilities both before the start and finish. Anybody wishing to take part in this event needs to register online first by visiting the official parkrun website at registered the barcode obtained must be brought along to every parkrun event. The first event on the 22nd February saw 197 people cross the line and since then the average number of runners per week has been 131.

Local Care Company Now Provides Live-in Care

Bluebird Care has been providing the highest quality care in South Gloucestershire, and now they are offering care on a round-the-clock basis in people’s homes. The Sodbury-based organisation introduced the new live-in care initiative earlier this year, where staff live with customers for up to five weeks at a time. With such excellent 1-2-1 care available in people’s homes, they have no need to make the daunting move into the unfamiliar surroundings of a residential home. It is also cheaper to be cared for in your own home. Louise, who spent a number of weeks living full time with someone who needed some assistance at home, said: “I enjoyed spending time with and getting to know my customer. Everyone has a story to tell and you’re always surprised by the interesting lives that people have led. I also get a lot of satisfaction from helping someone live an independent lifestyle, which they wouldn’t be able to do unless I was there to do the tasks that they are not physically able to do themselves.” With a base in Chipping Sodbury, care is provided around Yate and Thornbury, as well all the rural areas of South Gloucestershire. It also covers the areas of North and East Bristol that fall within the county borders, including Bradley Stoke, Emerson Green and Kingswood. Jack Whitfield, Managing Director of Bluebird Care in the local area, added: “We are able to arrange care visits from as little as half an hour to as many hours as the customer might want or need. We see ourselves as a realistic and cost-effective alternative to residential care homes, and are pleased to provide live-in carers who can look after people around the clock, within their own home.” Bluebird Care specialise in working with customers who suffer from dementia, physical and learning disabilities, and work alongside their families, Social Services, GPs and Primary Care Trusts to ensure each person receives the care they need. As well as personal care they also help with meal preparation, welfare checks, shopping, social trips, visits to the hospital and provide extra support for customers recently out of hospital. For more information, please contact Bluebird Care (South Glos) on 01454 323 624.

FARM TAILS So our prayers have been answered – the sun has been shining and spring is on its way! The daffodils are up and in their full glory along the road side by our farm, the grass is flourishing and the puddles are finally drying away. With the mild weather, we have been able to get some of the animals back out into the fields. The yearling ewes here are enjoying a lovely evening out on the hill.

If this weather stays (fingers and toes firmly crossed!), we’ll soon be letting the little lambs out to frolic and play soon too. And the sheep aren’t the only ones enjoying the sunshine; the young ducklings – not quite a month old – had their first ever taste of the great outdoors this week, as we moved them out of the shed and into the paddock. Having only ever lived indoors and under heat lamps, admittedly at first they were rather baffled, but within a few minutes they were pecking away at the grass and basking in the sun. Instincts are very impressive things! As you can see, they also didn’t hesitate to jump straight into the last few puddles around the paddock to cool off after running around and enjoying their new surroundings. Mucky little tykes! So here’s to a long month of lovely sunshine! Will and Lucy The Jolly Goose Co jollygoose@live,.com 07779 5474 510 07890 688 948

Nibley House is a Grade 2* listed Georgian house which affords stunning views towards Stinchcombe Hill and the Welsh mountains from the front, and the Tyndale monument to the side. The immediate two and a half acre garden surrounding the house is well stocked with pretty shrubs and flowers complimenting the natural country setting. In the 1600’s it was owned by John Smith, historian, antiquarian and steward of Berkeley Castle and more recently it has been owned by the Eley family for over seventy years. Today, it is used as a venue for weddings, celebrations and conferences, with the house and gardens being available exclusively throughout the year with or without the use of the three newly refurbished boutique style bedrooms. Glamping, (posh camping with shabby chic accessories!) is soon to be added to the bed and breakfast accommodation, along with the camping and caravan site. There is also a children’s day nursery which can be hired with qualified staff for weddings at the house on weekends.

Suzy’s Socks Suzy keeps all her socks in the top drawer of her chest of drawers. She can never be bothered to pair them up so they get jumbled. She has 10 red socks, 8 blue socks and 6 pink socks. One morning she needs to get a pair of socks but doesn't want to turn the light on in case she wakes her big sister who shares the room. If Suzy cannot see the colour of the socks because it is too dark, how many socks must she take out of the drawer to be absolutely sure that she has got one matching pair?

Does Your Bed Give You Back Ache? Toll House Clinic Chiropractors Katarina, Mike and Craig believe that choosing the right mattress for your bed can minimise the factors that may lead to, or aggravate back pain.

Katarina SvederCain GCC Registered Chiropractor

Mike Clark GCC Registered Chiropractor

Craig de Groot GCC Registered Chiropractor

People come in different weights, shapes and sizes, but have one thing in common; we spend more than a third of our lives in bed so choosing a mattress is important. Katarina recommends the best mattress is a ‘supportive one’. If you are lying on your side, your spine should be parallel to the mattress and your spine should not sag (bed too soft) or bow (bed too hard). Your pillow should also be an extension of this, your neck should be a continuation of the straight spine not too high or too low. Even with a new mattress we would still recommend the following to prevent back problems: Try and adopt a sleeping position which creates less physical stress on the back. For example lying on your side is better than lying on your front with your neck twisted to one side. Don’t leap out of bed first thing in the morning. After you have woken up try some gentle stretches. Once up, avoid bending or doing anything sudden or strenuous until your back wakes up ! We are here to help, advise and treat. Call us today to book a free 15 minute consultation to see if you could benefit from treatment in the future? Please quote FBC when booking. “I have found great relief from been treated at Toll House Clinic for over 5 years for various ailments. Everyone is very friendly and professional and I am always made to feel welcome”

Community news and what’s on Sodbury in Bloom. We're well under way with plans for this year and would be glad if anyone out there would like to join us. We meet each first Thursday of the month, gathering outside the Baptist Church at 10am. Our current plans include a drift of field poppies on the verge leading up to Waitrose, under the cemetery wall; further wild flower planting around the Ridings. We put in lots of plugs through the autumn and winter and want to build on that. Keep your eyes peeled for moon daisies, campions, fox and hounds etc etc. We hope you like them. We're now hoping to add in lots of primroses and bluebells. We also planted fritillaries by the river in Jubilee Park. They may, of course, have drowned... In the Community orchard off Couzens Close, we've cleared some self sown saplings to ensure that the little fruit trees don't get shaded out. Have you seen the bulbs that are coming up there? We're hoping that they will provide some nectar for the bees that are housed in the orchard. To augment that, we'll be putting lots of early bulbs around the orchard, crocuses, snowdrops, maybe some native hellebores which I've seen bumble bees feeding from in my own garden Frenchay Hospital - End of the Line today. We'd love to see more of you, come and join us. It's fun! In May this year the hospital closes, and Frenchay www.m ys odbur y. c o. uk/ s odbur y/ Village Museum has mounted an exhibition telling the hospital's story. Some of the voluntary groups that openvironment/sodbury_in_bloom erate within the hospital are mounting their own displays in the museum's Visiting Exhibition Room. The Severn Vale Flower Club’s Open Meeting on Monday evening 28th April RVS, better known by their former name, the WRVS, are mounting a display about their very long associawith Elizabeth Graham, held in the tion with the hospital, and later Headway House will Armstrong Hall Thornbury. Doors open at 6.30pm for 7.30pm. There will have a display about their activities. The museum is also collecting people's memories. For example, were be Refreshments, Raffle, Plant & you in Frenchay Amateur Dramatic Club? If so your Sales tables. For more information photograph may be on display, as there are photoand tickets call Barbara on 01453 811089. Alternatively come along and graph albums recording the club's productions. But nothing is known about the club, and the museum pay on the Door. Entrance £8.50pp would welcome information. We would welcome any incl refreshments. stories relating to people's memories of the hospital. Also available in the museum are copies of Dr. James Briggs' book "The History of Frenchay Hospital", and "Faces of Frenchay Hospital", a collection of memories of hospital staff that was first published in 1998. The museum is just inside Entrance "B" of Frenchay Hospital, and is open Wednesdays 1-4pm, and Saturday and Sunday 2-5pm. Entry is free. Further details on 0117 9570942, or email 64
