Building Hope for Children's Education in Rural Angkorian Areas

Background The Angkor Kids Center (AKC) is a community-based non-profit, non-political, non-religious educational establishment with a mission to aid the rural Siem Reap communities in improving their own standards of living, with a focus on increasing accesses to qualified education, building life skills and job opportunities for the poor, and unprivileged students, with a sense that Siem Reap has already high potential tourism sector jobs. This informal education takes initiatives; AKC is supporting education for over 550 families in one village, primarily. Comprehensively, we believe that education is the key to sustainable changes, and are committed to a holistic developmental approach which empowers children, parents, teachers, and communities to make the positive changes they want to see in their lives. The center fulfills this mission by encouraging the cooperation with local communities, authorities, nongovernmental organization, private sectors, business, and other environmental stakeholders, to help mainly on eliminating the number of governmental-school-students giving up their study before the medium level (Completion of Grade 9/ secondary school) by empowering their English knowledge capability and capacity as it is strongly required at both schools and careers alike, by using The Friend-Help-Friends strategy as a core objective, this means that the volunteers who is working for AKC will have to have a passion of learning, what they earn and benefit from AKC is knowledge and experiences, for instance, the teachers who has little knowledge will be given a chance to teach the ones who have no knowledge, and these teachers are the students from the more advanced classes.

AKC was primarily established in 2002 by a young villager, Mr Samnang Chhon without any fundamental support in Angkor Thom district 30 km from Siem Reap center. The project could only be implemented by a share-in-kind of the curious students who attended his English classes. Since Samnang had been granted a great financial support from a German traveling couple, Mr Andreas Dorner and Mrs Jasmin Dorner in 2004. Samnang has achieved his professional career as an English teacher and Travel and Tourism career.

Currently, AKC has some support from foundations, plus our own pocket contributions, furthermore AKC also receives some stuffs and monetary donation from the tourists who spend visit to our community and the shelters, or taking the tourist services offered by the AKC support team, such as the tour guides, transportation, accommodation etc, where The Intensive English Project could run, even it is not sustainable. Lining up along with The Intensive English Project, and to leverage the objectives to reach the AKC’s core goal, AKC committee, and the project consultants have launched a new strategy to be implemented “The AKC Green Project focusing on planting the fruit and the agro forestry trees where it will help the environmental issues, and the community economy growth.

Reference: According to the current research we learned that 90% of the entire population is still living based on the agriculture using he traditional techniques. Specifically, the form that they are doing is rice farm, where they cut down the forest to make the farm. Their activity is the most dangerous form lead to deforestation. This is the sense that AKC has set up this Green project to be implemented. AKC team as the implementers determined that if we have enough sources to implement this particular project targeting the AKC students, and community, AKC will make the most sustainable developments and achievements heading the future project expected goals through the set efficient objectives, and a close monitoring and evaluations. This achievement to be made will not only benefit the individual clients but it will become a great model and encouragement for the future, and the surrounding communities. To give back to community, they will take initiative to help themselves and their communities using the new experiences gained during the implementation.

How the Pupils Get Involved! Due to the fact that AKC kids and teachers are from the communities whose families are living relying on the above mentioned formed subsistent farm. To be a responsible stakeholders the AKC kids and teachers (see the targeted group) will initiate to take part in this project by try as much as possible to gain the knowledge and benefit from this course and will be it upward to benefit their own families and whole communities.

Goals, Objectives and Expected Results Diagram:

According to the above diagram, The AKC Green Project will not only help the environmental issues, but also help to support a great function of the community economic development through its circling body.
