This olive oil has received international awards and consistently excellent press reviews.

In October the Olives are carefully separated from the trees with wooden sticks where they fall onto open nets. These nets are then gathered and taken to a cool building as quickly as possible to pick out the best quality olives. These olives then go straight to the press where again, under cold temperatures they are bottled. There is no heat treatment or refining involved in our presses and therefore the nutrients in our olive oil are very high. Also, the whole process takes less than 24 hours from tree to bottle ensuring maximum freshness.

FOOD GUIDE Welcome to the first Spring edition of “My Local Food Guide”. We believe many residential customers and businesses in the Brentwood & Billericay area will benefit from the launch of this magazine. Brentwood and the surrounding villages including Billericay have many excellent local restaurants, takeaways and food outlets, but how many people know which ones exist and where they are located? We often receive leaflets through our letterbox with offers and menus for local restaurants or takeaways and we tend to store them in a drawer at home, or throw them away. The main focus for bringing you this guide is to bring you special offers at participating outlets and highlight the different facilities that exist in each venue. We feel it’s easier to have all this information stored in one booklet, updated each month with new offers. How helpful would it be to know that a particular restaurant has a children’s menu or a nice garden for those sunny days. You may want to prepare your own meal, using quality ingredients, so we have included details of several purveyors of fine foods and we trust that you would agree that by choosing local independent suppliers you will be helping to support neighbourhood businesses.

If you would like to advertise in the next edition, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please call 07870 263655 or 07748 244 650 or email to info@alexanderhayden.co.uk for advertising rates and a media pack. The next deadline day is 5pm on 20th April 2012. All adverts need to be paid for on or before deadline day. My Local Food Guide magazine is published independently and produced by Alexander Hayden Ltd.

We hope you find our guide useful and our advertisers’ offers helpful. Our guide is published monthly and is distributed to a total of approximately 5,000 homes a month (15,000 residents over a 3 month period). We have categorised the pages for ease of use, and if you have any suggestions or comments for future issues we would be delighted to hear from you. Happy Eating! Since our last Gala Dinner we have allocated more than £2.5 million to support the most vulnerable and marginalised Palestinian communities in key projects including:

Our Gaza Community-Based Rehabilitation Programme, now in its 11th year of assisting children, who have been seriously injured and disabled as a result of the conflict, through the provision of medical and rehabilitation services, disability aids, psychosocial support, home and school adaptations, family awareness-raising and community networking. In 2011-2012 more than 2000 children with disabilities throughout Gaza have been assisted by this vital programme. We also work with local Palestinian NGOs in Lebanon supporting CBR programmes to improve training and resources for CBR service providers. Maternal Health Programme in north Lebanon, has been supporting newly pregnant women and new mothers living in very difficult conditions in Nahr El Bared Camp for three years, through the provision of health kits during pregnancy and new born baby care kits once they have delivered their babies. The programme has helped women to find appropriate health and medical support and support has continued following the birth. Early Childhood Development Programme is a key Welfare Association programme supporting Kindergartens (KGs) in ‘at risk’ areas, especially where families are in extreme poverty or being marginalised by Israeli policies and practices. This

programme aims to renovate KG facilities and resources, upgrade the teaching skills of KG staff and provide young children with a nutritious daily meal. In 2011-12 we have worked with kindergartens in 11 locations including Jerusalem, Nablus, Gaza, and in Lebanon in Ein El Hilweh Camp and Baalbeck Camp supporting more than 1000 children.

The Big Lottery Fund has awarded Welfare Association a four-year grant for a new project to Empower Marginalised Communities, South Lebanon. This project will work in 3 refugee camps and 9 gatherings, known for being the most marginalised of all the refugee communities across the country, as they lack many public services, and suffer high poverty rates. In partnership with 7 local Palestinian NGOs this programme will help improve health, the environment and to reduce poverty through the provision of microloans. In the last 4 years (2008-2012) Welfare Association has worked with The Big Lottery Fund in the north of Lebanon in Nahr El Bared Camp addressing the mental and physical health needs of the refugees and developing resources within the camp to ensure sustainability of achievements once the project ends. It has provided support to restart small businesses and to increase employment opportunities through vocational training and career counselling. In recent years we have been able to expand our Food Security programmes, especially in Gaza. These programmes allow families to

Annual Review, Report & Accounts.

We would like to thank all the cyclists and their sponsors for this fantastic result!

The financial year January - December 2011 is the reporting period covered in the accounts and related programme updates in this review.

During 2011, the charity raised more than £660,000 and the income net of costs was £638,686. This income was raised from the general public, the Big Lottery Fund and a number of trusts and foundations in the UK and overseas. The total resources expended was £743,593. The resources expended are greater than the income received due to funds accumulated in previous years being allocated in 2011. The overall income is lower than in 2010 when funds were still coming in from the major fundraising dinner

of 2009. The dinner is held every three years and the next dinner is scheduled for November 2012.

The Welfare Association (UK) is an international, non-governmental, non-political, non-religious organisation established in 1993. It is constituted under a Memorandum and Articles of Association incorporated on 13th April 1993 and is registered with the Charity Commission, (registered charity number 1020238), and with Companies House, (registered number 2809950), as a company limited by guarantee and without share capital. The charity's main objectives are the advancement of education, the relief of sickness and the protection and preservation of health, and the relief of poverty for the benefit of the ihabitants of Palestine, Israel, Lebanon and Jordan, (and in particular the communities in the West Bank and Gaza areas).

Annual Review 2011-2012

Welfare Association has been able to increase support for emergency humanitarian relief work

CBR: The National Society for Rehabilitation, in Khan Younis and Rafah, Gaza.

This is a 12-month project that will be implemented in Rafah (2.2% of 192,000 persons are disabled; 30% are children) and Khan Younis (3.7% of 170,000 persons are disabled; 37% are children) for persons with disabilities. Through a multidisciplinary team, 650 children with disabilities, their families, local communities, including kindergartens and teachers, will benefit from a variety of rehabilitation services. This includes health care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychosocial support, provision of technical aids, non-medical supplies, home and school adaptation, and awareness issues.

Mr. Hamid Swarka. WA Community-Based Rehabilitation Programme, Gaza

The Gaza CBR programme works to support those seriously injured and disabled by the conflict in Gaza. Following the bombardment of Gaza in 2008/2009 WA increased its support, as many more children and adults were in need of urgent medical and rehabilitation services. Through this programme we were able to relocate some of the people most seriously injured and provide urgently needed assistive devices and in some cases medical support in 2011.

Mr. Hamid Swarka is a 39 year old resident of Al-Sawarka, in the north of Gaza. He is the head of a family of seven, farming land around his home with sheep and chickens. On 17th January 2009 at 2:30pm he was injured when a tank shell hit his house. As a result of the attack both the house and the chicken farm were destroyed and surgeons were unable to save Mr Swarka’s legs. As well as finding himself severely disabled he had also lost his livelihood. He said, “Before my injury, I used to look after the sheep, I used to sell the products and bring my family food and clothing, but after losing my legs, we suffer very difficult economic conditions. The feeling of inability to buy your kids what they want is really painful. But after receiving assistive devices from this project, I am now able to move around without any help.”
