01 TUCSON MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART Spring 2017 | Downtown Tucson | Comprehensive Studio The idea is to enhance the discovery of spaces by creating opportunities with circulation and natural light. Emphasis is made on how visitors would circulate through the building, which simulates the activity of hiking on a mountain; where the user can ascend to the rooftop of the building and descend whenever necessary. In regards to site, the museum takes advantage of the southeast corner by opening up to the city with an outdoor public space. The building form is a gesture to the mountains of Tucson and this natural landscape is exemplified by the open space on the last floor where the view of them are framed.

Concept Model Process The initial phase began with a basic foam model to experment with the form. It then evolved as materiality was introduced to express the difference between ascending and descending.

02 MULTI-RESIDENTIAL HIGH RISE TOWER Fall 2017 | Downtown Tucson The project builds upon the system of a forest by looking closely as to how living beings within nature grow, adapt, and function together as a whole. Within the building, there is an organization of layers. The top, highest layer, collects rainwater to feed the roof garden and to circulate the vital liquid towards the ground floor where everything is collected to be repurposed. At the core of the building there is the highest concentration of people and interaction. The spaces are planned accordingly, to influence social interaction, and by the utilization of a “do it yourself� composting system, the residents can learn, contribute to the holistic system, and interact with each other to create a self-sustaining environment. In addition to this, the tower takes advantage of natural shading due to the stepping of the units, and finally, with the implementation of bioluminescent algae, the skin becomes alive and gives back to the environment.

Bioluminescent Algae Containers The idea is to create a living skin by incorporating dinoflagelattes as the primary algae culture. These are known to illuminate very brightly when disturbed because of a chemical compound within their cells that causes them to bioluminesce. In addition, the growth cycle of the algae causes a release of heat which can be used as energy for the building, creating a sustainable skin.

03 VERTICAL CITY TOWER - ADAPTIVE SKIN Summer 2017 | Philadelphia | Advanced Revit Course The project was inspired by the concept of an exquisite corpse, where a group would design parts of the tower and put it together to form the whole. This portion of the tower consists of the fifth to eigth floors and the idea behind them was to push the boundaries of circulation and the grid of the structure by introducing ramps and curving forms. Enclosing it all is an adaptive skin that protects the floors from sun exposure in the summer but allows for light to enter during the harsh winters of the east coast. The skin adapts by a system of louvers that rotate on an axis point, giving this portion of the tower an itriguing ever-changing form.

04 POGGIO DI SOREN - CHURCH OF LUGNANO Fall 2017 | Orvieto, Italy | Semester Abroad Lugnano in Teverina is a tiny midieval town located within the Umbra region of Italy. Amongst the plehtora of rich history and local artisans and craft, the city possessed a desanctified church that was crumbling down. As a part of the global initiatives program, Arizona in Orvieto, the project proposal of repurposing the church for a museum that would house all of Dr. David Soren’s (renowned arqueologist of the U of A) findings was birthed. The idea behind the restoration is to maintain as much of the history of the church as possible and to recreate the identity of the town within the museum.

05 STUDIO HOPPER - CAPLA HOPPER - SHADE Spring 2018 | CAPLA University of Arizona | Design Build Master’s Project The Capla Hopper is an incentive for the College of Architecture at the U of A to collaborate more with the community and the city of Tucson. As a mobile workshop, the goals of the project is to create an entity that can reach many parts of the city and serve as a bridge between the students, users, and the people of Tucson. Along with the workshop space, the project also offers Gallery/Lecture space and a shaded area. Lastly, the heart of the project lies within its expression and the significance of an outreach program within the city of Tucson. As a grasshopper the idea is that it can “hop” from place to place and transform whenever it needs to, and in regards to its significance for the city, the Capla Hopper serves as the identity of the U of A and as a bridge between the community and the institution.
