Tips to work from home successfully Part 2

This is part 2 in the series of tips on how to work from home successfully, now that working from home is imposed upon you instead of a (luxury) free choice.

In part one, we talked about some practical tips like creating a morning -getting startedroutine, how to plan and schedule and to create a designated workplace. We also discussed the at-home based distractions like kids (and spouses J) and how to set the tone for the day.

In this part we will focus on the physical and mental tips you need to take into account to work at home successfully and stay energized.



When you normally go to the office you do get a bit of exercise. But working from home will diminish all your movements to a bare minimum. You do not have to walk to another building, the lunchroom, a meeting. Everything in your house like coffee and the toilet is very nearby. Now that the gym is also closed you have to rely on yourself to get the discipline to stay in shape and plan exercises during the day (especially if you do not want to go on a heavy diet after lock-down).


Make sure you walk at least 10.000 steps a day. Go for a walk in the morning, during lunch and after dinner, even if it is just 10-15 minutes. That will keep your head fresh. If you are in a country that is in total lock down, there are also multiple home-based exercises for muscle building without equipment and HITT training for burning fat.

Eat Healthy

There are many reasons why you should eat healthy every day, but especially now that you don’t leave the house that much and you don’t get a lot of exercise (unless you follow the previous tip…) you might be very tempted to give yourself a break and have a fat snack to treat yourself. Unfortunately, this is not what you need. Let me remind you that one of the advantages of eating healthy is a better mood and an improved memory. Fat and sugars do the opposite (depression, acne, weight gain, drains your energy).


Try not to gain weight during lock down

Next to that, you do not want to gain like 10 pounds or even more in the next couple of weeks. You and I both know how hard it is to lose weight. So, instead of putting yourself through that, start or keep eating healthy now that you are in your home. Working from home gives you full access to your kitchen, you can take a bit of time if you like cooking and prepare healthy food. If you do not like to cook, just buy it and treat yourself and your family to a healthy meal! Eat more vegetables (very, very low on calories), eat low carb food, lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs and wholegrain varieties.

Studies have shown that eating healthy has a direct link on overall productivity levels. Next to that important fact, it has many advantages for your health, weight, heart and stroke prevention and you will feel more energy. So, to work from home effectively, eating healthy is a very important aspect that will benefit you in a lot of other ways as well!

Sleep well

Most people need 8-9 hours of sleep. A good night sleep as many benefits: it improves your memory, it reduces stress, it is better for your health and it puts you in a better mood. Studies have even shown it can make you smarter. The reason for that is the fact


that your brain becomes more effective and productive after a good night sleep. You willfeel sharper and more focused during the entire day!

Stay connected

In this day and age with all the modern technology, working from home does not mean isolation. Keep the team spirit, call each other or use skype. Check in with your team to see how they are doing or if they need your assistance. You may need to be more proactive than normally in maintaining your relationships.

Stay positive

If your vacation got canceled, you cannot visit your friends or go out to dinner, if your stocks have plunged or even worse, you might easily get negative sitting at home (alone). We are wired to look for the negative and, in these times, it is not so hard to find it. But now is the time to show some character and be confident you can handle this, whatever it takes.

Focusing on the positive brings you many benefits. It does not mean you have to keep your head in the sand and pretend that the bad news does not exist. It means you approach things in a more positive and productive way.

Positive thinking is much more than just a feel-good term or a smile and being happy. Studies have shown that positive thinking create real value in your life and help you build skills that last longer than a smile. Positive thinking can help you cope with any situation you encounter in your life. There are many advantages to positive thinking like reduction of stress, increasing coping mechanisms, greater confidence and a higher self-esteem, more energy, feeling stronger. It improves your relations and also has many health benefits. Positive thinking is eminent for reaching success and happiness in your life and business!
