little black shoe

11

The

crucial

handmade

component

shoe

is

the

of

a

stitching.

the goodyear welt stitch can only be completed by hand but it allows for the tread on a shoe to be completely removed. this means that a shoe can be retreaded up to ten times before needing to be replaced.

the Little

Black Shoe

is a

bespoke shoe store that uses the concept of

stitching

throughout

the

space.

furniture and spaces weave in and out of each other creating unique connections.

NAME: KINOKO INSPIRATION: FUNGI OPTION: ONE, THE IMPACT OF COLOR AND CRAFT DESIGN STRATEGIES: INSPIRATION STEMMED FROM DIAGRAMMING THE LAMELLA (GILL) OF THE AGARIC SPECIES OF FUNGI AS WELL AS THE RADIATING COLOR PATTERN OF THE BRACKET MUSHROOM PATTERN MOTIF: : A SEQUENCE OF RADIATING HAND RENDERED TRIANGLES AT 3 SCALES MANIPULATED BY RULES OF THE DIAGRAM MUSHROOM GIL PATTERN PATTERN REPEAT: 12”x20” SECTION MIRRORED, ROTATED AND SEPARATED TO CREATE A VOID DOWN THE CENTER ON A 2 x 3 GRID FOR A 24 x 60 REPEAT PATTERN COLOR: NATURAL COLORS FOUND IN COMMON FUNGI (GREYS AND TANS) EXPLANATION OF EXPLORATIONS: I BEGAN CREATING PATTERNS WITH WATERCOLORED DIAGRAMS OF THE RADIATING COLOR MARKINGS THAT NATURALLY OCCUR IN THE BRACKET MUSHROOM. EVERY PATTERN THAT WAS CREATED, I IMPOSED A SET OF RULES BASED ON THE RADIATING PATTERN OF A MUSHROOM. THE FIRST ITERATION OF THIS MOTIF USED A 2” x 3” SECTION IN A 6 X 6 GRID. HOWEVER, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT A MUCH LARGER SCALE WAS NECESSARY WHEN THE INTENDED USE WAS TO BE COMPOSED FOR A WALLPAPER. THE FINAL PATTERN THAT I CHOSE TO USE AS A WALLPAPER IN MY SPACE SEPARATES THE BEDROOM FROM THE KITCHEN AND MAIN AREA OF AN OPEN FLOOR PLAN 500 SQUARE FOOT HOUSE. THE PATTERN BEGINS WITH ONE OF THE WATERCOLORED DIAGRAMS AND THE RULE I IMPOSED USES THE DIAGRAM OF THE GIL PATTERN (LARGE, SMALL, MED, SMALL, LARGE) TO CREATE A UNIQUE RHYTHM IN ONE SECTION OF A 2 X 3 GRID. THE 12X 20 SECTION OF THE GRID WAS ROTATED USING THE MOTIF OF THE BRACKET DIAGRAM IN THE OTHER 5 SPACES OF THE GRID AND SEPARATED TO CREATE A VOID IN THE FOREGROUND. THEREFORE, THE USE OF THE BACK GROUND CREATES A BALANCE WITH THE FOREGROUND IN THE FIELD. THE FINAL INSTALATION I INVISION WILL HAVE STAMPS FROM A HAND CARVED LINOLEUM BLOCK ORGANICALLY POSITIONED OVER THE DIGITALLY PRINTED WALLPAPER AND A WHITE PASTE WILL BE APPLIED TO SECTIONS OF THE STAMP TO CREATED A UNIQUE TEXTURED PIECE OF ART. INTENDED USE: WALLPAPER
