What is N,N-Dimethylacetamide? N,N-Dimethylacetamide, guidechem, 127-19-5 N,N-Dimethylacetamide is a clear oily liquid miscible in all proportion with water; melting point -20 C, boiling point 165 C at 1013 hPa. It is dissolved in most of organic solvents including alcohols, ethers, ketones, chlorinated and aromatic solvents except aliphatic hydrocarbons. The Molecular Formula is C4H9NO, Molecular Weight is 87.12 and the CAS Registry Number is 127-19-5. N,N-Dimethylacetamide is produced from acetic acid and dimethylamine. It is the acetic acid amide with two methyl group substituents on the nitrogen atom. The is formic acid analogue is N,N,-dimethylformamide (DMF). It is less toxic than DMF. The good water solubility and excellent solvent power particularly for high molecular weight polymers and resins make it as a common solvent in man-made fibre and polyurethane production. N,N-Dimethylacetamide is also used as a solvent for production of X-ray and photo-resist stripping compounds. N,N-Dimethylacetamide is a dipolar aprotic solvent with a high boiling point. It is a good reaction medium and catalyst. It facilitates the SN2 reaction mechanism. It is a reactor solvent or plasticizer for cosmetic and pharmaceutical intermediates. It is also used as an extraction agent for gases and oils. N,N-Dimethylacetamide is prepared by the reaction of dimethylamine with acetic anhydride and esters of acetic acid. Dehydration of the salt of dimethylamine and acetic acid also furnishes this compound: CH3CO2-N(CH3)2H2 → H2O + CH3CON(CH3)2 The chemical reactions of dimethylacetamide are typical of N,N-disubstituted amides. It will hydrolyze in the presence of acids: CH3CON(CH3)2 + H2O + HCl → CH3COOH + (CH3)2NH2+ClIt is however resistant to bases. For this reason N,N-Dimethylacetamide is useful solvent for reactions involving strong bases such as sodium hydroxide. N,N-Dimethylacetamide is commonly used as a solvent for fibers or in the adhesive industry. It is also employed in the production of pharmaceuticals and plasticizers as a reaction medium. N,N-Dimethylacetamide is used in industrial settings only. The possible routes of potential exposure of the worker are inhalation and contact with the skin. Uses in industrial settings are generally controlled conditions and often in closed systems. N,N-dimethylacetamide(CAS NO: 127-19-5) is considered a substance with the potential to cause harmful effects if proper worker protection is not utilized. Risk management measures for industrial site use include containment through engineering controls and personal protective equipment, such as an approved respirator, chemical resistant gloves, chemical goggles, and

protective clothing. Learning more information about N,N-dimethylacetamide, please access to guidechem. Guidechem Chemical Network providing the most complete information of the chemical industry.
