Woman of the Year Success is a journey, not a destination. We proudly announce that our President Dr.Anu Chandran is one of the recipients of the prestigious “Woman of the Year� Award from FICCIFLO Women’s chapter(FICCI Ladies organisation), Chennai on 12th April’10. All Committee members, volunteers & Staff celebrated this honour & the recognition of the hard work put in by Dr. Anu Chandran. “This award is not for me, it is for each one of us, this is a joint effort� she said. Renowned theatre personality Mr.Mithran Devanesen produced & directed 3 short plays “A Woman Alone� by obel Prize winner Dario Fo’s at Sivagami Pethachi th Auditorium on the 10 & 11th April. Each and every member tirelessly worked for 2 months to see the programme through. AEW places on record its sincere thanks to all our sponsors and well wishers who readily came forward to help us. It was also a day when AEw recognized and felicitated Women Achievers & Philanthropists who have contributed their mite to the Society. A very special event, truly “an evening of laughter & poignancy�.

II floor Inauguration: Yet another dream is fulfilled and again, it is thanks to our very dear Patron, Mr.Basil Sellers. The large hall on the second floor is now complete and is ready to accommodate our English classes & meetings. The temporary construction designed by Architect Mr.Shrikumar, was formally inaugurated by Mr.Basil Sellers on 5th February ’10, along with a surprise guest - renowned cricketer Mr. Dennis Lillie. On this occasion, a plaque in honour of Mrs.Lakshmi Kumar (Our first President) & Mr.Kumar was unveiled- a small gesture to show our appreciation to our “dear Founder members�.

bestowed in the name of “Saroja RajaGopalan ursing Endowment�, in memory of Late Shri.V.R.Rajagopalan. Our nurses have been taking care of their aged mother for 2 years. The family, happy with their service, has come forward to donate Rs.1 lakh towards Home ursing Project. The Management Committee unanimously resolved to begin a separate FD in Oriental Bank of Commerce, Kilpauk Branch. The quarterly interest will be utilized as stipend for Home ursing girls as Rs.5/- per girl per day of attendance. An annual report will be sent to the donor. The Committee thanks Mrs. 5irmala Rajasekaran & Mr.Rajasekeran for the generous offer. 5ew Course – Tally & Accounting:

Knowledge of accounting being mandatory in today’s job requirements, we started “Tally & Accounting� course on 5th October ’09 with 15 girls. Mr.Srinivasan of Veetech Solutions came forward to help us by giving the syllabus, question papers & most importantly the certification of the course & the placements too. The original Tally software has been installed in all the teacher’s computers through the LA( Local Area etwork) & the educational software in all the student’s computers. By the 1st week of June, a batch of 40 students equipped with knowledge of Computer & Accounting will be ready for employment.

India Giving Challenge - Battle of Buffet: AEW was happy to be a part of Give India’s “Battle of Buffet� a Fund Raiser Programme for the GOs held at Chennai Trade centre on the 1st October ’09. It was proved to be a platform to meet & interact with other GOs. Ottapalam Welfare Trust: Ottapalam Welfare Trust at Kerala, had requested AEW to help them in their Computer Project. The Committee had expressed an interest in assisting the Computer course for a given period. A special meeting to discuss on this issue was held on 28th January ’10 at AEW. The founder members Mr & Mrs. Kumar met the Committee members & discussed the various aspects involved in this Project. Extra-curricular activities: Training at Park Sheraton: A soft skill training session was arranged by Mr.C.Sathish Kumar, Manager, Learning Services, for the under-privileged girls at Hotel Park Sheraton on 29th & 30th September’09 between 11 a.m – 1 p.m. 37 girls from Home ursing & House Keeping were benefitted from this training.

Competition Organised by Soroptimist International: Soroptimist International organised an Oratorical Competition on 10th September’09 between 12p.m – 2p.m. The topics were “How will you tackle Domestic Violence?� (or) “Is Capital Punishment necessary to discipline children?� Our girls actively took part and the selected girls were sent to Madras Seva Sadhan for an inter-School Competition. Visitors: Ms.Metchil de Humpert from Germany visited AEW. Impressed by the activities, she donated Rs.12,400/-. We thank her for the nice gesture. 5IMSME, an Organization from Hyderabad brought in 22 delegates from different parts of the world to visit AEW during their Study tour. The delegates studied the activities of AEW and interacted with members & students. House Keeping: The strength in House Keeping course was dwindling batch by batch. After vigorous campaigning too, no one opted to join the course. Hence the Committee has decided to stall the project. The hospitality industry, though lucrative, seems taboo for this stratum of Society.

5ew Course - Soft Skills & Spoken English: Campaigning at the local Government Schools saw an exodus of students who required a basic knowledge in Spoken English & Soft Skills to equip them in their future endeavours. One month crash course during the months of April & May has been organized for them to improve their employability skills.

Summer Crash course In Computers: Since every summer many girls come & request for Computer classes, we have planned to have Summer Crash course this year. We are fortunate to have such direct recruitment for our Computer trainees. Car Driving: The refresher course for the Car driving course needs a car. We appeal to our well-wishers to sponsor a car so that the Project can go on smoothly.
