CRAFT IN THE DIGITAL AGE

CRAFT IN THE DIGITAL AGE KEITH VAN DE REIT 3RD YEAR FALL SEMESTER THE WAINWRIGHT BUILDING IS UNIQUE AS A PIONEER FOR EARLY SKYSCRAPERS, STANDING AT 10 STORIES TALL (147 FT.), IN THIS CAST STUDY, THE FOCUS WAS PLACED ON THE DECORATIVE TERRACOTTA TILES WHICH GARNISH THE BUILDING THROUGHOUT ITS MANY DIFFERENT SPANDRELS AND BANDS AROUND THE FACADE. THIS STUDIO FOCUSED ON THE BUILT CRAFT AND THE USE OF CURRENT MODELING TECHNIQUES TO AID THE FABRICATION OF THE PAST ARCHITECTUAL FACADES. MY TEAM AND I SOUGHT OUT TO CREATE A DIGITAL MODEL AND A STUCTURE THAT WOULD HOLD DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE FACADE TO BE PUT ON DISPLAY IN THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE. I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR CONTRUCTION PHASE OF THE PROJECT AND DESIGNING AND FABRICATING THE STEEL STRUCTURE OF THE PROJECT.

CENTER FOR DIASPORA PHIL HOFSTRA 3RD YEAR SPRING SEMESTER THE CENTER OF DIASPORA WAS DESIGNED BY A GROUP OF FOUR AND THIS PROJECT WAS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO TELL A STROY AND REPRESENT A CERTAIN STORY FOR A CULTURE OF PEOPLE. DIASPORA IS THE DISPLACEMENT OF A CULTURE OR ETHNICITY AND BEING FORCEFULLY REMOVED FROM WHAT THEY CALL HOME. MY TEAM AND I WORKED ON THE NARRATIVE FOR THIS PROJECT AND HOW ARCHITECTURE COULD TEMPORARLY FIX THE PROBLEMS FOR THE ISSUES FOR THOSE AFFECTED. THIS PROJECT HELP ME UNDERSTNAD TO WORK WITH A LARGE GROUP AND CALLOBORATE WITH MULTIPLE IDEAS TO CREATE A NARRATIVE THAT WAS APPROPRIATE FOR THE DIAPORA CONCEPT. I WAS RESPONSIBLE OF SETTING UP THE MODEL AND THE RENDERS AND DISPERSING THE RESPONSIBILITIES TO EACH ONE OF MY TEAMMATES.

HOUSING LAB PROTOTYPE JOE COLISTRA 5TH YEAR RESEARCH THIS PROJECT IS PART OF GRADUATE RESEARCH STUDY THAT LOOKS TO CREATE A HOUSING PROTOYPE TO GATHER INFORMATION AND STUDY HOW GAIT ANALYSIS SENSORS CAN BE USED TO ANALYZE EARLY SIGNS OF PARKINSON’S DISEASE AND OR TREMORS. I WAS PROJECT MANAGER FOR THE INSTALLATION AND NEW ADDITIONS TO THE PROTOTYPE. DURING THIS SEMESTER WE WORKED ON THE ADDITION OF SMART TECHNONOGY TO THE HOUSING UNIT AND WE DID THIS BY WORKING WITH A COMPANY CALLED HOMEBASE WHO SPECIALIZE IN CREATING AN ECOSYSTEM OF TECHNOLOGY THAT CAN BE CONTROLLED THROUGH A PHONE APP. IN COLLABORATION WE ARE WORKING ON CREATING AN INTERFACE THAT CAN BE USED IN SENIOR HOUSING TO CREATE A SAFER ENVIROMENT FOR SENIOR THAT MAY LIVE BY THEMSELVES.

SPRAGUE HALL

SPRAGUE HALL IS A SENIOR HOUSING COMPLEX AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS FOR RETIRED PROFESSORS THAT TAUGHT AT THE SCHOOL. WE INSTALLED GAIT ANALYSIS SENSORS UNDER THEIR FLOORS TO MONITOR DATA AND STUDIED THE INFORMATION TO TRACK AND SEE IF THEY GOT OUT OF BED OR DIDN’T DO ENOUGH WALKING AROUND FOR THE DAY. WE STARTED THE SEMESTER BY DOING THIS STUDY TO APPLY THIS INFORMATION TO THE PROTOTYPE UNIT AND WORK WITH HOMEBASE AND TRY AND CREATE A USER INTERFACE THAT CAN BE READ THROUGH A PHONE APPLICATION.

3D PRINTED HOUSING JOE COLISTRA 5TH YEAR RESEARCH THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WAS TO EXPLORE 3D PRINTED HOUSES AND CREATE WALL SECTIONS AND DIAGRAMS FOR A COMPANY CALLED ICON BUILD THAT POSSESSED A 3D PRINTING MACHINE THAT COULD PRINT A HOUSE IN 24 HOURS. IN THIS PROJECT WE HAD TO CREATE MULTIPLE WALL SECTIONS FOR PH.D STUDENTS TO ANAYLZE AND CREATE AN R-FACTOR RATING FOR THE MOST OPTIMAL WALL SECTION IN A 3D PRINTED HOUSE. WE ALSO HAD TO EXPLORE PRE-FABRICATED CONCEPTS THAT COULD BE ADDED INTO A 3D PRINTED HOUSE. WE RESEARCHED ON HOW A PRE-FABRICATED WET WALL THAT COULD BE PLACED INSIDE A 3D PRINTED HOUSE THE HAD ALL THE APPLIANCES NEEDED FOR A HOUSE.

HUD COMPETITION JOE COLISTRA 5TH YEAR RESEARCH THE HUD COMPETITION HAPPENS EVERY YEAR AND THE GOAL OF THIS COMPETITION IS TO CREATE AN AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMPLEX AND PROVIDE THE NECESSARY INFORMATION TO SHOW THAT IT COULD BE ACHIEVED. MY GROUP AND I RECIEVED SEMI-FINALIST STAGE AND CREATED A HOUSING COMPLEX THAT HAD A UNIVERSITY RESEARCH SPACE THAT RENTED OUT PART OF THE COMPLEX AND WOULD FUND THE OVERALL HOUSING PROJECT. WITH THIS CONCEPT IN MIND WE WOULD WORK IN TANDOM WITH THE RESEARCH GROUP AND CREAT UNIT THAT HAD SMART TECHNOLOGY AND APPLY FLOOR SENSORS SO RESEARCHERS CAN USE THIS INFORMATION IN THEIR STUDIES.

CUSTOM REMODELS WORK OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL CEDER CREEK, OLATHE THIS WORK IS ALL DONE THROUGH MY FAMILY AND WE HAVE A VERY CLOSE COMMUNITY IN CEDAR CREEK THAT ENJOY THE WORK THAT WE DO. THIS CUSTOM WORK IS NECESSARY FOR US AS A FAMILY BECAUSE WE ARE SKILLED AT WHAT WE DO AND IS ESSENTIAL FOR MY BROTHERS AND I TO AFFORD SCHOOL AND MAKE THIS FAR IN OUR EDUCATIONAL CAREERS. THIS WORK IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT ALSO TEACHES US SKILLS THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW AND IT IS USEFUL FOR NOT ONLY MY FIELD OF WORK BUT FOR FOR SMALLER PROJECTS WE WANT TO DO IN OUR HOMES. CUSTOM REMODELS HAVE TAUGHT ME ALOT ABOUT HOW COMPLICATED FINSIH WORK CAN BE AND THE AMOUNT OF CHANGES THAT HAVE TO BE DONE ON SITE BECAUSE THERE ARE ISSUES THAT CAN’T BE SEEN THROUGH DRAWINGS.

CUSTOM REMODELS

38

CEDAR CREEK DRUMMOND FAMILY $250,000 HOUSE PRICE THE PROJECT SCOPE FOR THIS REMODEL WAS TO CREATE A CUSTOM BAR AND ACCENT WALLS FOR THEIR LIVING ROOM AND THEATER ROOM. THE FAMILY HAD ALREADY DESGINED WHAT THEY WANTED THEIR BAR TO LOOK LIKE AND WHILE IN THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE WE COLLABORATED WITH THEM AND DESIGNED A NICE LIGHTING CONCEPT FOR THERE ACCENT WALL ALONG THE BAR AND CREATED A NICE ASTHETIC LOOK FOR THEIR ALCHOHOL SHELF. THIS PROJECT ENDED UP BEING A LOT OF CUSTOM CABINETRY AND FINSH WORK AND NEEDED TO WORK IN TANDOM WITH CLIENTS IN ORDER TO SATISFY THEIR WANTS AND CREATE THEIR DREAM HOME.

CEDAR CREEK JOHNSON FAMILY $250,000 HOUSE PRICE THE PROJECT SCOPE FOR THIS REMODEL WAS TO CREATE A CUSTOM BAR AND ACCENT WALLS FOR THEIR LIVING ROOM AND THEATER ROOM. THIS PROJECT NEEDED ALOT OF FRAMING AND PLANNING TO DESIGN THE LAYOUT OF THEIR BAR AND ACCENT WALLS. THE FINISH WORK ON THIS BASEMENT TURNED OUT EXCELLENT AND CREATED A UNIQUE CONNECTION FROM BRICK TO ROCK WALL ACCENTS. WE ENDED UP CREATING CUSTOM DOORS THAT WOULD REPLACE STANDARD DOORS THAT ALREADY EXSISTED IN THE BASEMENT.

OVERLAND PARK DE LA PAZ FAMILY $300,000 HOUSE PRICE THE PROJECT SCOPE FOR THIS REMODEL WAS TO REMODEL THE CURRENT BAR THAT EXISTED AND ADD A ROCK FINSIH. WE ALSO HAD TO DESIGN A CUSTOM FIREPLACE AND ALSO A ROCK FINSIH WITH ACCENT ENTRIES ADJACENT TO IT. THIS PROJECT HAD SOME CHALLENGES BECAUSE THE CLIENT WAS A COLLECTOR AND WANTED TO CREATE A CENTER PEACE AT HIS BAR AND WE ENDED UP DESIGNING AN ARCHED FRAME FOR A COLLECTORS ITEM THAT HE WANTED TO PLACE IN THE FRAME.
