56 Years’ Heritage: Vibratory Roller and Plant Hire (Northern) Limited, founded in 1954 by Fred Pilkington Below:, the new TPA brand in action

The new logo is in line with the rebrand of TPA’s parent group, Vp plc, the equipment rental specialist based in Harrogate. All Vp companies have been re-branded to reflect a more unified image to ensure a concise and integrated message is presented to customers no matter which market the individual companies operate within. As you can see from the new versions of the logos, all now have a shared overall appearance and feel. The new brand has been designed to reiterate the shared values and open culture that Vp has built up over the last fifty years and TPA’s customers will see it being rolled out over the next few months with vehicles, clothing and promotional items all changing to reflect the new style.

Vp has evolved over the last fifty years to become one of the UK’s leading equipment rental businesses. The Vp group is built around its six constituent specialist divisions, all of whom have created their own identity within the markets that they serve.

The change obviously will not affect the excellent service that customers have come to expect; but will merely reflect the benefits that customers receive as a result of TPA being part of Vp – experience across a wide range of sectors within the Group, a strong financial backing and the knowledge that they are dealing with the portable roadways experts.

We felt that it was timely to reinforce the quality of the individual divisions by creating a new branding structure common to the whole Vp group. This structure is aimed at reflecting the link to Vp plc and endorsing the shared values and open culture within the group. I believe the new brand achieves this and we all look forward to rolling it out across the Vp group over the coming months. Neil Stothard, MD, Vp Group

Aylesford Bridgwater

We at TPA pride ourselves on the level of customer service we offer, and in order to maintain our high standards have recently expanded the network of regionally based depots. The main facility in Worksop is now supported by satellite depots in both Bridgwater and Aylesford to provide a “local” service to contracts in the South West and South East. This is in addition to the existing sites already in operation in Scotland, Southern Ireland and depots across Germany.

This year alone sees TPA introducing four new products specifically for the transmission sector, each of which offering an enhancement or advantage over the existing product. John Jennings, TPA’s transmission Project Manager is no stranger to the industry having worked in it for the last 25 years. New products include demarcation posts which don’t penetrate the ground, and wooden breaker panels that side alongside the more traditional aluminium product. TPA works with most of the sector’s key players and is delighted to have been awarded a three year contract to supply the Electricity Alliance.

The marketing function of TPA was further enhanced with the appointment of Thomas Clarkson adding his design and creative flair to the team. Meanwhile out in the field, Bob Walsh (left) joins as Field Sales Engineer to cover the South West region. Bob Walsh

MD40 Walkway Following TPA’s achievement of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise and a TESA award for product innovation, we’re continuing our pioneering approach by introducing a number of unique new products in 2010. Our operations team have been listening carefully to feedback from clients, which highlighted the need for a versatile pedestrian solution with built in strength and safety. The result is MD40 - a simple adaption of the popular roll out roadway with sufficient strength to support a 40 tonne vehicle, and coated with a non slip paint, making it ideal for use as a pedestrian walkway or marquee flooring. Clients including the Malvern Show and Royal Ascot have both been delighted with its recent performance.

Clients often chose TPA year after year as their trusted partner, and recent awarded contracts include the Royal Horticultural Society for the flower shows at Hampton Court and Tatton Park, and The PGA to supply product for the golf Open, at Celtic Manor.

TPA, the portable roadways specialists, are delighted to confirm that it has secured a further contract to supply the All England Lawn Tennis Club’s Wimbledon Championships. The company has now supplied the event continuously since 2004, and this will be their third three year agreement.

TPA has always provided us with excellent support and service; their material is of a very high quality and their teams of engineers always work in a professional manner when on our sites. They are willing to discuss any problems we might have and suggest robust and cost effective solutions.”

The world famous championships take place between 21st June and 4th July, although TPA is on site from the end of April installing nearly 3,000 panels for car and coach parking, the contractors’ compound, debenture carparking and pedestrian areas on the adjacent golf course. TPA also supply crowd control barriers to ensure queues do not spill onto the busy main road outside the club.

Steve Humberstone, Divisional Director UK added; “I am absolutely delighted that the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club have once again chosen TPA to be its exclusive supplier for portable roadways. Our reputation is built on providing a high quality, second to none, service and this has been paramount in securing a further 3 year deal with John and his team. At TPA, we are involved in many high profile sporting events but there are few that come close to the prestige of Wimbledon. I am sure this will be the start of another successful year for TPA.”

This new contract will run through to 2012 inclusive and is proof that the AELTC is pleased with the service it receives. John Cox, Buildings and Services Manager at the Club commented; “The All England Lawn Tennis Club is pleased to continue their relationship with TPA in respect of all elements of portable roadways before, during and after the event.

In an unusual job hosted in the picturesque grounds of Chatsworth in Derbyshire, Portable roadways specialist TPA worked with the organisers of the recent ‘Rally Show’, to create special rally stage with a twist… and a turn!

Panels used to provide a trackway of a different sort!

Roadway Panels Make a ‘Rally’ Good Track

As well as the cars driving on the normal road and off road, a new special section of track was created using specially fabricated temporary roadway panels which provided a surface that allowed the cars to travel at speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour rather than the recommended 5 miles per hour for conventional temporary roadway panels. The 130 metre long section also included a hairpin turn and provided the drivers with a unique driving challenge. The Rally Show is a unique motorsport experience based around spectators and incorporates part of the special rally stage of the former RAC Rally. In total, TPA installed nearly 300 aluminium roadway panels with the same amount of safety bollards which lined certain sections of the track. Over 860 pedestrian barriers enclosed the race teams’ paddock area and the designated viewing areas for the public.

“TPA has always provided us with excellent support and service, their material is of a very high quality and their teams of engineers always work in a professional manner when on our sites. They are willing to discuss any problems we might

have and suggest robust and cost effective solutions.” John Cox, AELTC.

Portable roadways specialist TPA recently assisted event organiser Brand Events, to tee off a brand new golf show at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire.

Si Flannigan, Brand Events Head of Operations, has worked with TPA many times in the past and also works with the company on the Taste Festivals which take place in London and Edinburgh each summer; “TPA did a great job for us at Golf Live 2010 – as always a well managed, professional project.”

TPA is currently one of the main suppliers for many of the UK’s forthcoming major outdoor sporting events including the Wimbledon Championships, Royal Ascot and the RHS Hampton Court Palace flower show.

“TPA has continually delivered on time and on schedule” Melvin Benn, Festival Republic.

TPA panels used as roadway and walkway

‘Golf Live’ offered keen golfers the opportunity to attend workshops from golf professionals Colin Montgomery, Paul Casey, Ian Pouter and Retief Gooson who, along with world class coaches, provided an insight into how the professionals play. The event also showcased the latest custom fitted equipment and the opportunity to try the kit on the on-site driving range. TPA ensured that visitors could walk easily through the show by installing pedestrian walkways and hard-standing areas between the different elements of the event.

Business Development Director for TPA, Amanda Cruxton-Chance said: “We regularly supply events at Chatsworth but this was the first of a kind for an event of this type. We anchored the panels with special plates and pins beneath to prevent any movement. As the cars were travelling at such speeds this was necessary as the panels would normally move and potentially lift causing damage the vehicles if we hadn’t done this. The cars were therefore able to drive at much faster speeds than would normally be possible – or recommended – on our panels.”

MUD, MUD, GLORIOUS MUD! Golf events are nothing new to TPA though, as the company also supplies The Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, the PGA tournament at Wentworth, the IMG Women’s Open at Royal Birkdale and supplied last year’s Open at Turnbury. TPA is currently one of the main suppliers for many of the UK’s major outdoor sporting events including the Lawn Tennis Association’s activity at the Queen’s Club, Edgbaston and Eastbourne and Wimbledon’s championships. It will also be installing panels at Royal Ascot and the RHS Hampton Court flower show and many of the leading music festivals. For further information on all TPA’s products, visit the website at or simply call 0870 240 2381 for a colour brochure.

BUT NOT AT YOUR EVENT! See how TPA’s products mean you don’t have to rely on your wellies by visiting us at this year’s Showman’s Show. We’ll be at the corner of Lew Spencer Avenue, opposite the organiser’s office.

Speedy response BY TPA to rail call

Portable access specialists TPA responded within 48 hours to a phone call from Birse Rail recently, which required access to a site in Appleby, Cumbria. The initial call was received at TPA’s main Worksop depot at 9.00am on the Friday morning prompting Ian Burney, TPA’s rail engineer, to dispatch himself to Cumbria from

where he was able to do a site survey and relay the information back to the office by 11.00am that same day. Operations then organised an installation team and panels to be on site by 5.00am the following morning. The team were able to install 600 ‘panels’ over ½ a kilometre, negotiating a single track road to the

site from where they also installed passing places. By 7.00am on the Sunday morning, a six metre wide roadway had been created which stretched for over 500 metres and included working areas for the heavy machinery required by the customer. This included eight wheeler lorries to transport over 4000 tonnes of vital raw materials over a two day period which then allowed the speed restriction imposed by Network Rail to be lifted. Ian Burney commented; “From the initial call by Birse into the office, we were able to survey and install a solution that met their requirements within 48 hours. The site itself wasn’t straightforward, which is typical of many rail sites, but the crew rose to the challenge and provided the customer with exactly what was needed within a very tight timescale enabling them to start work on the Monday morning as scheduled.”

TPA PAVES THE WAY FOR BRIDGE LIFT A temporary aluminium roadway from access specialist TPA Portable Roadways has helped contractors using one of the world’s largest telescopic mobile cranes to replace a railway bridge. The 1,200 tonne capacity Liebherr telescopic mobile crane was supplied by heavy lift specialist Mammoet UK to help main contractor May Gurney remove a life-expired concrete and castiron footbridge over the busy East Coast Mainline at Newton Hall, Durham. During a 6-hour possession, the crane removed the old bridge and lifted a new steel bridge into place on the prepared abutments. Despite the fact that neither the old bridge nor the new one weighed more than 20 tonnes, the lift required a massively powerful crane capable of lifting substantial loads at a great distance. The bridge spans the railway at a location off Canterbury Road, Newton Hall, with a nature reserve on one side of the track and a housing estate on the other. The nearest location available

for erecting a crane is an amenity space which adjoins the main road and narrows to a footpath between the track and the houses about 60m from eastern abutment. This required a crane capable of lifting the 20 tonne bridges at a radius of 82 m from its slewing bearing.

Not only the crane, but also the fleet of ancillary vehicles required to transport its components to site, had to travel through the housing estate and onto the playing field where the crane was rigged and the lifts carried out. A total of 175m of roadway was laid to ensure safe access from Canterbury Road.

With a main boom weighing 105 tonnes, a 100 tonne chassis and over 200 tonnes of counterweight (not to mention the weight of the additional 78 m luffing fly-jib and the bridge itself), the big crane weighs far in excess of 400 tonnes when rigged.

“TPA is one of our regular suppliers, and as always they gave us a first class service on this job” comments Mammoet sales manager Richard Craven. “They did everything we asked of them and really helped the job go smoothly” he adds.

To prevent the load sinking into the grassy field, Mammoet hired TPA’s universal aluminium roadway system to spread the load and provide a safe, stable platform for the lift.

“Now that Network Rail and its contractor May Gurney have seen what we can do with this crane, we’re hoping there’ll be more work for it in the rail sector.“

Meet the Fleet.

UNIQUE PROBLEM. UNIQUE PRODUCT. We’re often guilty of not promoting some of the unique products that we have within our portfolio and our bridges and stairways are two such cases. Recently one of our Project Managers was approached by a client to help literally “bridge a gap” on a site where a crane needed to traverse a void. Using years of experience, the team designed a bridge that was capable of supporting the 100 tonne capacity load, with axle weights of 15 tonne. The 10 metre bridge was installed with entrance and exit ramps giving it an overall span of 20 metres. As with our more traditional systems, our engineers can conduct a free of charge site visit to discuss designing a suitable bridge to help you cross a void, for either vehicles or pedestrian use, all of which will be supplied and installed complying with all current legislative requirements.

Robert Kelsey: Marathon Man!

Robert Kelsey, Field Sales Engineer covering the Eastern region ran in support of his daughter, “the light of his life” during a recent half marathon. Gabriella, now one year old, was born with Downs Syndrome and Robert ran the half marathon raising money to donate to their local support group based in Peterborough. Finishing in a gruelling 2 hours 10 minutes, and supported by his brother in law, was well worth the aches and pains as Robert raised over £1,000 from generous friends, family, work colleagues and people who had never met the budding athlete. The money will be used to educate new parents and families of children with a similar condition to Gabriella’s. Robert now has the marathon bug and is looking to compete in a further run soon. Look out London and New York!

He will work with the TPA Team in Germany to maintain the market leading service levels that have been a feature our business over recent years and assist in creating a robust and resilient structure capable of future European growth.

Terry Mead, TPA's Operation Manager recently formed part of the "Yorkshire Aid Convoy", with trustees and volunteers completing a 4,500km round trip, distributing aid to Romania's poor and needy. Five lorries laden with 93 tonnes of hospital equipment, clothes and household supplies, all donated by local businesses and worth more than £2m were handed to staff at orphanages, schools and hospitals. The 9 day excursion was an “emotional rollercoaster” for Terry. The charity organises two trips a year.
