前言 今次「佛教藝術展覽」將於香港荷李活道東寶齋店裡展出。 我們很榮幸向各位展出我們精心挑選的佛教藝術珍藏品。 本次展覽包括二十三件來自西藏,蒙古,內地和印度的古代 神聖雕塑和唐卡佛畫。當中以贊巴風格和漢藏風格為展覽主 要重心,浮現出中原與喜馬拉亞地區古代交流下的神聖姿容 和靈性融合的藝術的一面。 在這次金光閃閃的蒙古贊巴藏品當中,包括有重要的銅鎏金 無量壽佛,散發無限光芒;一把三面兇猛瑪哈嘎拉頭的罕見 銅鎏金祭祀匕首(普巴);一個保留著原有小佛的完整銅鎏金 佛塔;一尊品相極好的銅鎏金綠度母,和一對精緻的銅鎏金 鈴和金剛杵,是展現智慧與慈悲的重要法器。

在內地與西藏宗教信仰交流之下,宮廷漢藏佛教藝術掌握了 喜馬拉亞地區的精湛技術。 在我們的展品中,威風凜凜的大 威德金剛正是清朝宮廷乾隆年間的傑出作品。 更引人注目的是一尊莊嚴的元代密宗的極之罕見大型木雕六 臂瑪哈嘎拉「大黑天」。雕工粗獷有力,眼睛鑲嵌黑石,刻畫 出元代特有古樸風格,與中國杭州靈隱寺旁飛來峰石窟看到 的密宗造像風格極似,當中花型串珠及寶冠裝飾尤其相似。 此木雕瑪哈嘎拉經新西蘭拉夫特放射性碳實驗室証實雕塑是 十四世紀時代作品。 我們希望這次展覽,令我們對這些神秘而色彩豐富的藏傳佛 教藝術作品增加新的理解和欣賞。

西藏密宗造像由元朝君主忽必烈和薩迦派領袖八思巴(1235-1280)的宗主和國師融洽關係 開始。公元1260年忽必烈成功繼位天克汗統領蒙古帝國,冊封八思巴為國師,鞏固了薩迦 派在元朝的宗教領導地位。公元1262年八思巴向忽必烈介紹了尼泊爾著名藝術師阿尼哥。 公元1260年,以阿尼哥為首的尼泊爾工匠們為忽必烈興建在西藏的蕯迦班贊佛塔。忽必烈 更於公元1273年提升年輕的阿尼哥為藝術總管,訓練當地工藝師藏式和尼泊爾風格和宗教 造像,同時阿尼哥亦將自己本土文化和中土文化融合一起。這尊木雕大黑天正是這種文化交 流下的產品,他代表了中、印和藏式風格,柔合了元朝雕塑藝術,與杭州飛來峰石窟中元 代造像相似。在十三世紀晩期楊連真加和他的工匠弟子們在杭州飛來峰雕造了百多尊藏式造 像。楊連真加是有維吾爾族血統的西夏人,是當時杭州藏傳佛教事務總管。大黑天戴冠上的 法輪設計與飛來峰石窟的尊勝佛母(銘文公元1292年)相媲美 i 。大黑天的方型面頰,健碩 的軀幹和富動感的肢體均對應了元代密宗造像的風格,如圍繞著尊聖佛母的忿怒護法 ii 。飛 來峰的尊勝佛母坐於佛塔內,兩旁有企菩薩和金剛手,週圍伴有四位忿怒護法:藍棒金剛、 不動明王、大力金剛和宜帝護法,代表著蕯迦派重視的護法,一如法國巴黎居美博物館珍 藏的十四世紀尊勝佛母唐卡內顯露的護法 iii 。居美博物舘另一珍藏的黄石雕兩臂大黑天碑更 能代表元代蕯迦派傳承雕塑風格。其銘文提及忽必烈和八思巴,更有紀年公元1292年,與 杭州飛來峰始建同年 iv 。居美博物館的黃石大黑天碑和這木雕六臂大黑天共有相似的火焰髮 式,頭髮向上至頂,尾端捲曲。明朝早期忿怒造像火焰型髮式多呈現整體彎曲,一如史匹曼 舊藏永樂銅鎏金喜金剛一樣,由此印證本展品木雕六臂大黑天的元朝年代及其與飛來峰雕塑 的聯系 v 。這木雕是非常罕見元朝倖存的雕像,表達元時期極高創造性的藝術作品,代表當 時漢藏文化交流融合達到互惠互利的目的。

Deities of the Tibetan Vajrayana pantheon entered the cultural vocabulary of the

Yuan dynasty through the momentous relationship between the Tibetan Sakya hierarch Phags-pa (1235-1280) and the Mongol emperor Khubilai Khan (1215-1294). The power of the Sakya order in the thirteenth century was cemented when Phagspa was named state preceptor on the accession of Khubilai as ruler of the Mongol empire in 1260. Phags-pa famously introduced the Nepalese artist Aniko (12441306) to Khubilai in 1262. Aniko was one of a group of artists summoned to Tibet from Nepal in 1260 by Phags-pa to construct a memorial stupa to Sakya Pandita (1182-1251) that Khubilai was to sponsor. The young and multi-talented Newar artist duly impressed the emperor and was elevated to Director of All Artisan Classes at court in 1273, training local craftsmen in Tibetan and Nepalese style and iconography, while adapting his own work to the cultural traditions of his patrons. This rare wood figure of Mahakala has roots in Indo-Tibetan iconography but the statue bears stylistic traits found in Yuan period sculpture, most notably the grotto carvings of Feilaifeng near Hangzhou, where the lay priest Yang Liangzhenjia and his entourage commissioned a hundred and more sculptures in the late thirteenth century: Yang, of mixed Uighur and Tangut lineage, was administrator of Tibetan and Buddhist Affairs at Hangzhou. The chakra design of Mahakala’s three crowns is comparable to those of the three-headed Ushnishavijaya at this important monument, dated by inscription to 1292.i Mahakala’s square faces, the bulk of the torso and weight of movement all correspond to the style of tantric imagery at the site, such as the krodha figures surrounding Ushnishavijaya.ii The iconography of the Feilaifeng Ushnishavijaya, depicted within a stupa attended by standing bodhisattvas, probably Lokeshvara and Vajrapani and surrounded by four krodha, probably Niladanda, Achala, Mahabala and Takkiraja precisely adheres to the Sakya formula as portrayed in an important early fourteenth century

Tibetan Sakya order Ushnishavijaya thangka in the Musée Guimet.iii The heritage of the Sakya order sculptural style in the Yuan period is seen in the renowned limestone stele of Mahakala in the Musée Guimet, which mentions Khubilai Khan and Phags-pa in its inscription and includes the date 1292, the same year as the Feilaifeng commissions.iv The flaming hair of the Mahakala in the limestone stele and in the wood Mahakala is comparable, with the hair standing upright in each statue and curling only at the very top. The flaming hair in tantric imagery from later periods is depicted as a mass of curls as seen in Yongle bronzes such as the Speelman Hevajra, thereby supporting the Yuan date of the statue and its association with the Feilaifeng carvings.v This wood sculpture of Mahakala, the wrathful manifestation of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, is a rare surviving work from this creative period in the Yuan dynasty where Tibetan and Chinese art and culture merge to mutual benefit.

Hollywood Galleries established by Hon Lau and his wife Ellen Ho in 1985, took its base in the ancient

sector of Hollywood road near the Hong Kong Man Mo temple where many of the reputable antique shops are centered. They specialized in Buddhist sculptures, paintings and religious works of art with origins from the Himalayas, India, China, and Southeast Asia spanning from 12th to 19th century. Their major expertise is on Tibetan gilt bronze sculptures working in collaboration with private collectors and museums in China and overseas. Their business pursuit in the art world goes back to the 70’s with Hon’s father’s initiation which set his foundation and inspirations for the next generation. The family business has since been passionately endeavored is continuously extended.
