Battle of El Alamein

Matching Sweaters

On July 1, 1942, the first Battle of El Alamein began. It was a famous battle of the Western Desert Campaign in the Second World War. It was fought between German and Italian troops, commanded by Rommel and the Allied Forces that were commanded by Auchinleck. It was a significant battle because it halted the second (and final) advance by the Germans into Egypt. El Alamein itself was just a small place with a railway station on the south coast but it was only 66 miles away from the capital, Alexandria. Copyright © 2013

I am so glad that the fashion trend for matching clothes seems to have gone away. Do you remember those hideous ‘his’-n-‘hers’ sweaters with identical patterns, or tee-shirts with matching messages? Although I didn’t like them, my sister thought they were really fun. She had a boyfriend who had a matching pullover that she had made. They had a complicated pattern of snowflakes and reindeer. They took ages for her to knit. Inevitably the pullovers lasted longer than the boyfriend!

Ford Woody

Mending Things

When I became a family man, I said goodbye, a bit reluctantly, to my motorcycle. The car I really wanted then was a Ford Woody. It took a few years to save up for it. There was something about the shape of it and the rustic looking wooden frame that decorated its sides that I liked. They needed to be varnished, which was a messy job. It was hard to keep the varnish from going over onto the forest green body paint. Varnishing was a smelly job, and it stuck your fingers together too. It was worth the effort though, to keep the car looking in tip top condition. Copyright Š 2013

Dear Christine and Jack, I was thinking the other day about my father-in-law and how he used to mend things. Nothing was thrown away if there was any useful life left in them. He mended broken saucepan handles and added an extra layer of neat string. They were better then than they had been when they were new. My father-in-law was also an absolute wizard with mending china too. You could hardly see the hairline crack in a broken plate after he had patiently lined it up and glued it. Best wishes, from Wynn

Monday, July 1, 2013 PAGE 1 ~ TODAY IN HISTORY ~ July 1, 1942 ~ Battle of El Alamein Background: This was an important battle from a strategic point of view, although El Alamein was not an important place in its own right. It was close to a high ridge that gave a good view of the surrounding area and close to the capital Alexandria. Questions: Do you remember hearing about El Alamein? Was anyone you know involved in the Western Desert Campaign or any other Second World War battles? Do you like reading adventure stories about war and military operations? Do you like watching movies about the war? PAGE 1 ~ THE WAY WE WERE ~ (from Christine’s point of view) ~ Matching sweaters Background: There was a period of time when wearing matching sweaters, or any other form of clothing, was very popular, especially among friends and couples. Often the clothing that matched contained very complicated patterns. Sometimes they had pictures on them like an eagle or snow scene. Questions: Do you like to see people in matching sweaters? Have you ever made matching sweaters? Do you wish people would wear matching clothing today? Why is that? PAGE 2 ~ DO YOU REMEMBER? ~ (from Jack’s point of view) ~ Ford Woody Background: A well loved make and model that had lots of room in the back. The distinctive wooden struts seemed to serve no purpose except decoration. Questions: Did you learn to drive or did you prefer to use public transportation? What other models of cars were popular when you were young? Do you like being a passenger in a car? PAGE 2 ~ READER’S LETTERS ~ Mending things Background: During the war years and immediately thereafter, many household items were expensive or not readily available. It was a vital skill to be able to ‘make-do and mend’. Anything that could be repaired was kept and re-used. Questions: Were you good at ‘making-do and mending’? What sort of repairs did you do? Who taught you how to mend things? What do you think of today’s ‘throw-away’ attitudes? Has mending become a lost art? PAGE 3 ~ QUIZ ~ Gemstones Quiz PAGE 3 ~ QUIZ ~ Names Quiz Copyright © 2013
