Grind Sharpen with pride

05

Simon

A self made man who takes pride in his image and his work. He knows that there is no time to second guess and fills every minute of his day. Whether it be his calming ritualistic mornings, Nose to the grindstone work days or illuminated evenings He gives nothing but his best. He enjoys the finer bits of life but misses the family that he has never had time for.

Drive

Must be earned it is not a given. the best way to earn respect is to take control and make everyone successful

Is neccessary but can get in the way . Understand success and take advantage of streangths. Confidence not arrogance.

Is what everyone expects and what makes success achievable. The body is a machine and must be maintained to reach maximum potential.

Comes from within. It can be influnced but must be personal. All goals are atainable if the passion is true and the motives are ligitimate.

Timeless Ritual Elegant Methodic Refind

Office Ritual What does it take to keep ones sanity during unending work days? It’s the little things. It’s the moments of clarity and breathing. The gasps of oxygen before the plumit. While everything is out of control it is the ability to keep the little things in order.

“It is the gasps of oxygen before the plumit. While everything is out of control it is the ability to keep the little things in order.”

Grind Simplicity and precision meet to perform exceptionally. The classic sharpening mechanics out perform many of today’s technologies. The fundamental materiality is familiar and stimulating to the touch gaining character with age.

Function Simple yet intriguing. The Grind sharpener starts by using an aperture to adjust to the exact size of the pencil. Once inserted the mechinism is sent into motion by twisting the top and bottom half. The shavings then fall into the bottom chamber and are stored until the bottom cap is removed for emptying

Materiality Materials are crucial for form function and sustainability. The quality of the product should not be reduced or blown out of proportion by the matarials. It is important to utilize what is available while staying concious of the overall concept and the inevitable afterlife

Emergency Kitchen Unit IHA housewares Competition

17

Housewares Furnishings for a house; especially: small articles of household equipment (as cooking utensils)

Merriam-Webster

Housewares are utilitarian, each tool is designed to perform its task quickly and efficiently. Because this demand is high, the form almost always follows its function. Within the house, tools’ functions are very clear. But what happens when the house is swept away by a hurricane or burnt to the ground? The emergency kitchen explores this question and poses solutions for situations where kitchens do not exist.

“But what happens when the house is swept away or burnt to the ground?”

Disaster Crises can occur. Anywhere. Any time. The Emergency Kitchen Unit (EKU) is designed for situations in which individuals are left without a way of preparing meals. The EKU contains all of the equipment necessary to cook for one to four people. The rugged streamlined design is effective as a self-contained appliance that can be shipped by the thousands to disaster areas around the world. At the same time, it is also ideal for small-scale living such as in unfinished lofts or studio, or for car or tent camping.

19

Innovation In an oversaturated market full of recycled ideas, how can a new product be born? What avenues have not been explored? Through the technique of mind mapping around kitchen wares, the emergency kitchen concept evolved. The diagramming technique brought forth the idea of providing the necessities of the kitchen to areas where they do not exist or have been destroyed.

“Providing the necessities of the kitchen to areas where they do not exist or have been destroyed.

The final design is small simple and efficient. Three 4” layers contain all of the components. The bottom level stores the propane tanks. The middle layer swings out providing a workspace and storage for the pot, pan and bowls. The top level houses the burner as well as two compartments - one for utensils and one for the water purifier. Included in the silverware is a detachable handle for the pot and pan which allows them to be stored more compactly. Contained within the 12” cube are supplies for four people for two weeks:

Evolution It was difficult to find exactly how the emergency kitchen would fit into our world. When exactly does an emergency kitchen become necessary? This was a tough question to answer. After more exploration, it became apparent that the difficulty lay in the fact that nothing like it exists today. The Emergency Kitchen Unit became a utilitarian device challenging the way we think about housewares. It could be thrown out of planes and stacked on pallets for shipping. The Emergency Kitchen Unit evolved into a transforming modular device that could be readily available and easily deployed to replace damaged or destroyed kitchens and cookware.

23

EKU The Emergency Kitchen Unit supplies a safe, efficient, and compact solution for providing the amenities of kitchens where there are none. The EKU supplies water purification, heat and a workspace. Each unit functions on existing accessible and affordable technologies. Shipped easily in large quantities to all ends of the earth the EKU has endless potential.

Cancer Is a word that everyone fears,. It stands for disease, pain and death. It is becoming increasingly common and effects almost every one in some way wether personally or through friends and family. Many survivors have created foundations and support groups to help support the victims of cancer. Lance Armstrong’s foundation is both educational and inspirational challenging us to help ourselves and our loved ones to fight with all of our power.

Strength to fight the long uphill battle, and confront the obstacles ahead.

The Livestrong network provides information regarding physical and mental well being.

Spirit to remember that recovery is not unreachable.

Through the Livestrong network stories of healing are told and hope is spread through the success of others.

Community for days when it feels like you are alone in the world

The Livestrong network connects patients who could be in the next room or on the other side of the world

29

Cart Almost everything in a hospital is on wheels. Mobility for equipment is necessary for efficiency and versatility. The IV cart is one of the most common in the hospital and is crucial in cancer treatment. Almost 80% of cancer patients go through some sort of chemo therapy which can take up to 8 hours during a single session. It is one of the most painful aspects of cancer treatment and forces the patient to watch poison drip into their body. Chemo therapy would be an ideal time for patients to have access to the Livestrong network as well as a tool to entertain and distract.

The apple iPad was the ideal candidate for our project being one of the only personal tablet PCs designed mostly for entertainment, focusing on ease of use and personal interaction. The capabilities of the iPad corresponded flawlessly with the idea of connecting patients to the Livestrong network as well as providing an escape from the painful world of chemo therapy.

Together Bench

37

Together The together bench is a flat packable Bench originally made from a half sheet of plywood. Its strength comes from the support structure which the seat holds together. The pattern on the seat also allows for a great amount of flexibility and comfort.

39

Sit The Together Bench is cut out on a CNC router and could potentially be made from any sheet material.
