Learn About Ill Effects of Marijuana as More Americans Want It Legalized Marijuana has been legalized for recreational purposes in nine American states and the District of Columbia in the last six years, and four other states are expected to join the group by the end of 2018. Though New York has not approved the use of recreational pot yet, Mayor Bill de Blasio has been able to bring down the numbers of incarceration linked with marijuana use significantly in New York City. Pot advocates have been strongly pushing for the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state. Not just New York, most of the remaining states seem to be joining the pro-pot movement gradually. According to a Pew Research Center survey, six out of 10 Americans think that the use of cannabis should be legalized across the nation. Despite some known medicinal benefits of cannabis – in opioid addiction treatment, dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy and treating insomnia – there are multiple legal, health and societal issues that can stem from the nationwide legalization of marijuana. Christian Hopfer, professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, is co-leading a $5.5 million study, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to explore the impact of pot legalization on substance abuse and mental health. He said that this kind of research is much needed as there is a dearth of data. According to him, smoking marijuana a couple of times a day can have a huge impact on the memory. He also said that taking marijuana during teen years can increase the susceptibility to addiction by at least four times. The brain during those years is more detrimental to the ill effects of marijuana than an adult brain. In addition, some people also argue that marijuana could open the floodgates to other potentially harmful drugs, like cocaine, heroin and prescription drugs. A past study carried out by the Yale School of Medicine in 2015 established that taking marijuana increases the

likelihood of abusing prescription opioids by two and half times. Besides, there is a danger of getting addicted to marijuana itself. It is estimated that nearly 24 million Americans aged 12 or older were the current users of marijuana in 2016 and 4 million had marijuana use disorder in the past year. Research also indicates that a year of marijuana use leads to intense cravings and difficulty in quitting the substance. Traffic mishaps and mortality Ever since marijuana legalization has picked pace in various states, the number of cannabisrelated accidents and fatalities have reportedly increased. According to the Denver Post, since the legalization of marijuana for recreational purpose in 2014, the number of marijuanarelated highway deaths has doubled in Colorado. The Highway Loss Data Institute published that in comparison to the non-smoking areas, the number of reported collision claims rose by three times in Oregon, Colorado and Washington where weed is legalized for recreational purpose as well. The potency of marijuana has also gone up significantly these days. In the 1990s, it ranged from 3.7 to 10 percent in Colorado, while the average potency now is around 18.7 percent. Seth Wong, founder and president of TEQ Analytical Labs shared that nowadays the potency percentage even goes up to high 20s and low 30s. This high-strength marijuana could be deleterious for the majority of the smokers as it can cause psychotic episodes. A study published in 2015 showed that the susceptibility to psychotic episodes increased three times in people who used high strain weed. According to the American Lung Association, the smoke from marijuana contains many of the irritants and carcinogenic substances found in tobacco smoke. Vaping and edibles also have a lot of drawbacks. Vaping sends high amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive substance, to the brain. In Colorado, the number of teenagers struggling with marijuana-related health scare almost shot up by more than four times between 2005 and 2015. The road ahead While more and more people are advocating for legalized cannabis use, one cannot ignore its negative implications. When a person abuses marijuana or gets addicted, his or her entire life can take a downward spiral.
