PATH - STRUCTURE - LIMIT Category: Master Thesis Project Location: Lo Barnechea, Santiago del Chile Year: 2017 Tutor: Arch. Luca Lanini, Arch. Mathias Klotz, Eng. Fabio Candido

The times we are living are part of an important historical period in which to focus our attention, since our actions or non-actions will change our future life. The town during the centuries has been the place of interventions aimed to better life conditions, but in South America has undergone discrimination, prejudice and conflicts. The project for the space along the river of Lo Barnechea in Santiago originates from the opportunity to give an alternative to the extension of Costanera Norte motorway. Protected by the mountain chain of Ande and by cerros islas, lo Barnechea features the development of Mapocho river and gathers one of the wealthiest populations of Chile, but unlike other areas, reveals a segment of less well-off dwellers as well. It is therefore the perfect background for the development of a project for an integrated housing estate. The path-structure-limit, seen as an open work subject to changing and adapting according to present and future needs, is the strategy to redetermine, according to landscape, the communication between the dwellers and their river.

VENETIAN CARPET Category: Competition Project Location: Poveglia, Venezia, Italy Year: 2016 In collaboration with: Michele Grazzini, Giacomo Massoni

In Greece, by a river, under the shade of the trees, someone started to speak. Passersby stopped to listen. Then there were opponents, critics and attendees could choose and form a personal opinion. Thus University was born. Georges Candilis

The University campus project try to revitalize the Poveglia island in the Venetian lagoon. We start to think at building as a small city and we bring Urbanism inside the Architecture. Old and new buildings are held together by the shape of two large mats or carpets. We put in the bulding the same spatial and functional density of the traditional European city contrasting. The floor plan consists of an orthogonal pattern or grid with linear housing and roads (external and internal), appropriate to the flat configuration of the area. We search for continuity and connection. From simple wires we obtain wonderful carpets, from simple lines we can draw great architectures. We have only to tie together the past with the future.

SF HOUSE OF MUSIC Category: Competition Project Location: San Francisco, United States of America Year: 2016 In collaboration with: Michele Grazzini, Giacomo Massoni, Arch. Tommaso de Sando, Arch. Giulia Capodiferro

Music is liquid architecture, architecture is frozen music. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The San Francisco House of Music have the goal to create a new functional space inside the Golden Gate Park. Following the regular grid of San Francisco city, we arrive to define the focal point of our project. The park is the occasion not only to establish a strong relationship with one of the biggest green landscapes designed in the United States, but to stimulate a private relationship between man and nature. The fence is the instrument capable of defining space. Architecture then becomes direct expression of the continuity between the external and internal spaces.

LAMBORGHINI ROAD MONUMENT Category: Competition Project Location: Sant’Agata Bolognese, Bologna, Italy Year: 2016 In collaboration with: Michele Grazzini, Giacomo Massoni, Arch. Tommaso de Sando, Arch. Giulia Capodiferro

Utopia is on the horizon. I move two steps closer; it moves two steps further away. I walk another ten steps and the horizon runs ten steps further away. As much as I may walk, I’ll never reach it. So what’s the point of utopia? The point is this: to keep walking. Eduardo Galeano

Two Lamborghini monuments. Two sculptures for the past, for the present and for the future. Two landmarks for the community.

WALK DOWN TO SEA Category: Competition Project Location: Siracusa, Italy Year: 2016 In collaboration with: Andrea Benincasa, Michele Grazzini, Giacomo Massoni

You have often heard that Syracuse is the greatest of the Greek cities, and the most beautiful of all. It is so, O judges, as it’s said to be. [Cicerone, Verr. II, 4, 117]

There are some places, surely unique more than rare, in which man is like an intruder and he must have the prudence to be included in them as little as possible. “Murro di Porco” is one of these places. The Lighthouse resort will be composed by a parallelepiped with all the services (which it is the projection of an existing building) and by private suites implanted in nature with the Hippodamian settlement criteria. All the elements are in relation with the lighthouse, the land and the sea.

SHOREDITCH SCHOOL OF ART Category: Competition Project Location: Shoreditch, London, United Kingdom Year: 2015 In collaboration with: Andrea Baglini, Michele Grazzini, Giacomo Massoni

In the project for a new School of Art in London we think that colleges have to be active parts of society and of urban territories. Therefore they cannot be conceived as autonomous bodies, but must be seen as permeable and available for users in order to create cultural connections. In this articulated and fragmented context, the division in two poles allows for maximum of spatial variety. And this thanks to the simple design wich organizes the complexity of public places of connection and of gathering. Classrooms are set along a visual and phisical axis wich, like a street, is configured as a sequence of “private” (rooms) and “communal” (corridors, stairs, court, cafè) spaces. Great importance was given to social areas designed for school users: when moving from classrooms to workrooms, students could cross the central court passing by a covered walkway at ground floor wich becomes an opened “bridge” at the first floor. Along this “public” axis corridors become as glass streets: these become places for gathering, to see and to be seen in the different ways and from different points.

STAIRS TO HORIZON Category: Competition Project Location: Barcelona, Spain Year: 2015 In collaboration with: Andrea Baglini, Michele Grazzini, Giacomo Massoni

Stairs to Horizon is a project for a new polifunctional building. The city can be considered as multiform, but unitary body, with the basic structure of the square “manzana” where each part draws meaning from establishing relations with all other parts. So, the pavilion is like a “square point,” oriented with a side facing the Rambla. It’s really like a piano key, catchable in its well-defined size, that takes its strength from being a single note within a homogeneous keyboard. It’s in dialogue with the Columbus Monument and along with it, it becomes a “chorus” not a “solo” announcing the presence of the sea for those who take the road coming from Ciutat Vella: the wonderful old town embraced by Cerdà’s “Ensanche” The building is a metal structure (steel covered with glass and tissue) consisting of three levels. It’s mainly a relational and contemplative space, surely a significant meeting point for turists, travelers and citizens.

LA RESERVA HOUSE Category: Mathias Klotz Project In construction Location: La Reserva, Chicureo, Region Metropolitana, Chile Year: 2016 - now Oriented by: Arch. Mathias Klotz Germain In collaboration with: Eduardo Ruiz-RisueĂąo Abad, Nicolas Reyes, Baltazar AcuĂąa Csillag

The project for the house La Reserva start from a specific request of the owners that wanted a new home with one floor, with a panoramic view and an inner patio. The conformation of the site creates the conditions to design a jutting costructions in which the strategic divisions of the night and day areas of the house find the perfect balance in the common central space characterised by a strong element that illuminate all the house.

TIMELESS SPACE Category: University Project, Architectural Survey, Graphic Design Publication and Exibhition Location: Montisi, Montalcino, Italy Year: 2017 In collaboration with: Andrea Baglini, Michele Grazzini, Giacomo Massoni

There is a building in the southern Siena district lying on the hills between the Val D’Asso, the Val d’Orcia and Crete for more than seven centuries: Montisi’s Grancia. His name was linked to the great Medieval Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala of Siena, in the fourteenth century was thus shaped like that “Beautiful fortress of palace” which, with little ‘crowned’ tower, directly inspired by the Sienese Mangia (now no longer present because it was mined in June 1944 by the returnees of German troops), was projected to the extreme boundaries of the countryside, echoing the last such extraordinary decades of the Nine Government. The project was characterised by an historical, political and architectural analysis, followed by the publication for Betti Editrice of the monographic volume “La grancia di Montisi”, written by the author Giacomo Massoni and thanks to the help of imprintedsign group, with preface of Pietro Ruschi and a text of Carlo Nepi. During the presentation of the book was also made an exhibition of all the work that tryed to describe the complexity of this timeless building.

URBAN ART MUSEUM OF PORTO Category: University Project Location: Porto, Portugal Year: 2015 Oriented by: Prof. Arch. Adalberto Dias, Prof. Arch. Eliseu Gonçalves, Prof. Arch. JosÊ Gigante

The Project for the Urban Art Museo of Porto relates to a complex context in which strong are the natural elements that characterize the course of Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques, and at the same time, important are the historical signs that have long characterized the center of the great Portuguese city. Until the end of nineteenth century the number of proposals related to it have marked and changed the place of connection between the old part of the city and the new area of expansion of Gaia situated over the famous Dom Luis Bridge. The reflection about the articulation of shapes, signs and lines, that form dimensionally the space, has led to the design of an urban museum that was, as possible, related with the features of the place. An architectural work that might not be divided from the nature but that underline it, allowing a urban deployment in a linear expression that does not set against to the fragmentation of the place.

In an enclosed space is designed a modular house made in concrete. The idea is a parallelepiped with minimal dimension and forniture for a temporary and limited use. The general plan emphasizes the natural element itself and thanks to the position in the park obtain a great importance. The texture of the concrete tries to profess clearly the building’s skeleton. Glass, steel and wood are the other materials used.

INTO THE WATER Category: University Project Location: Darsena Pisana, Pisa, Italy Year: 2014 Oriented by: Prof. Eng. Massimo Fiorido, Eng. Fabio Candido

A boundary is not that at which something stops but, as the Greeks recognized, the boundary is that from which something begins its presencing. Building, Dwelling, Thinking, Martin Heidegger, Darmstadt, 1951.

The Darsena Pisana today appears to be an area in constant evolution. A space halfway between the city and suburbs, between industrial and nature, between heaven and earth. An area that has lost its designation of place. The design strategy is based on reorganization and implementation of the dock. The goal of the project is to adapt existent, retraining the full, reorganizing empty and looking for a perfect balance between quiet and activities,. Thanks to the new bridge and to the floathing path the water in this new configuration isn’t a physical limit but an element characterizing the place.

CONVERSION Category: University Project Location: Calci, Pisa, Italy Year: 2013 Oriented by: Prof. Arch. Luca Lanini, Arch. Antonello Boschi In collaboration with: Claria Maria Siciliano

The idea of architecture which would bind to the territory and its traditions, has been for us an essential element from which beginning for the extencion of the agritourism Collerosso in Calci. In the early stages of conception enlargement, we have tried to include the theme of nature and the surrounding landscape within our project. The subtraction of volume created on the facade, to allow full enjoyment of the landscape, has been taken in creating a hypogaeum patio, which illuminate the interior, and an area in front of the rooms, where you can relax enjoying the good Tuscan wine and reading some books.

MONTIGNOSO Category: University Project Publication Location: Montignoso, Massa-Carrara, Italy Year: 2014 Oriented by: Prof. Roberto Pierini, Arch. Enrico Bascherini In collaboration with: Leonardo Albertini, Andrea Baglini, Michele Grazzini, Giacomo Massoni

“ A place marked by landmarks, edges and elements that find in the local tradition an unbreakable link. “ The area between the collector and the Versilia River, in the south of Via delle Caterate, in the municipality of Montignoso, is a vacant green place, characterized by a state of insecurity and inaccessibility. The proximity to the fish market, the newly formed marina and the path along the river banks, however, give great capacity to the area. The project try to reorganize the space connecting the different scenarios through a protected square in which the paths and the tower are compositional pivot of the entire intervention.

ANIMOSI’S THEATRE Category: Project Location: Carrara, Italia Year: 2017 In collaboration with: Carlo Alberto Bertolini, Michele Grazzini Over the course of these two centuries no other building or place can best describe Carrara: born from the tenacity and conscience of a small group of volunteers was a symbol of growth and acculturation. Quoted by Charles Dickens in his Pictures from Italy, it has become the seat of the Civic Casino and then of the Cinematographer Carrarese, it has changed its appearance and form for private interests until 1986, when his functions have been restored. Six years have passed since the closing of the Teatro degli Animosi, the last cultural landmark of the city of Carrara, built in 1836 by the Archtiect Giuseppe Pardini who thought to craete a neoclassical marble temple. The project consists in the study of the facade and the insertion of crowning statues that, according to the architect, had to symbolize the cultural revival of Carrara on the one hand, and on the other hand to show, through a solemn and grandiose facade, the spirit of the city.

Category: Project Built Location: Carrara, Italia Year: 2017

The project for a new living room starts from the request of trasformation of static living room. Changing the material floor and the bad forniture I try to recreate a modern but cozy space. The Arco lamp of Achille Castiglioni, the new table designed, the hanging shelf, the sofa and the new seat create a structure that completely trasform an important familiar part of the house.

STARTING FROM THE STOP Category: Competition Project Finalist Location: Pisa - Toscana, Italy Year: 2014 Oriented by: Prof. Eng. Marco Giorgio Bevilacqua, Eng Fabio Candido In collaboration with: Andrea Baglini, Michele Grazzini, Giacomo Massoni, Alberto Bartalucci, Eleonora Barsanti, Tiziana Conti, Jacopo Simonetti

Railway stations represented a symbol of technological development during the XIX and XX centuries. At this time they were an important landmark and improved territory development. Nowadays, with new service systems, several medium and small railway stations have been abandoned causing decadence in station areas and contexts, reducing social relations. A strategic design with social cooperation and local values can offer today exciting opportunities for town renovation.

THE HOUSE OF TWENTY-FOUR Category: Graphic Design Year: 2014 Oriented by: Eng. Fabio Candido

The old building of the Council, also known as the House of Twenty-Four is one of the latest project of the portuguese architect Fernando Tavora. The origins of this building date back to the fifteenth century when, close to the Cathedral of Porto, in the center of the old part of the city, was built a tower to house the local corporations. The project trasforms and restores the Council building in a “memorial that remember the long years of life and history of the city of Porto, a monumental object, in dialogue with the cathedral and the historical archive. A building that possesses an inner space able of arousing emotions.

“The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen.” Frank Lloys Wright

The Guggenheim Museum is the work that best describes the life path of the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. One of the most influential figures of the twentieth century whose life wasn’t linear and simple. Born into the nature, through the relationships with the context, to the journeys and experiences, to the numerous falls and new beginnings.
