Spirituality of Stewardship This is Holy Work rev. Mike Ward, CFRE

Spirituality of Stewardship Hide it under a bushel--NO! Fundraising is proclaiming what we believe in such a way that we offer other people an opportunity to participate with us in our vision and mission--Nouwen

Spirituality of Stewardship

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth--First Article, Apostle’s Creed

Spirituality of Stewardship I believe that God has created me and all that exists. He has given me and still preserves my body and soul with all their powers. He provides me with food and clothing, home and family, daily work, and all I need from day to day....All this God does out of fatherly and divine goodness and mercy, though I do not deserve it. Therefore I surely ought to thank and praise, serve and obey him. This is most certainly true.--Martin Luther

Spirituality of Stewardship

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also--Matthew 6:21

Spirituality of Stewardship Offering as Act of Worship The purpose of the Sunday morning offering is not to collect funds for covering the church’s operating expenses. The Sunday offering is a worship event that provides us with an opportunity for expressing our love for God in the purest way imaginable, by giving up something that we value.--Mark Powell

Spirituality of Stewardship Worship is about God, not about us.

Milo Kauffman relates story of poor Hindu that brings the last of his rice as an offering to God. A neighbor tells him, “You must not do that. You have to live.” His answer was, “No I don’t have to live, but I do have to worship.” Widow’s Might

Spirituality of Stewardship Money has become the God of North American Christians In fundraising as ministry, we are inviting people into a new way of relating to their resources.

Spirituality of Stewardship “Every day we stand in the shade of trees we did not plant. We live in houses we did not build. We eat food that we did not produce. We ponder ideas that are not original to us. So, too, we live in a body and with a mind and a spirit that we did not choose to create. Donald W. Hinze

Spirituality of Stewardship

Our need to give is greater than God’s need to receive

Spirituality of Stewardship On a practical level, for the church to lead people to spiritual stewardship, strong vision and mission for the congregation is necessary. When all we are about is paying the bills of the church and not really doing or sharing any stories of making a difference in the world for God’s Kingdom, it will be difficult at best to lead people to glad and generous hearts.--Mike Ward

Breaking Bad Habits

Whether raising $5,000 or $5 million, it doesn’t take longer than 6 weeks to raise money Youth Gathering included

Breaking Bad Habits

Regardless of what you are raising money for, you must answer “why. We are good with the who, what, when, where, how.

Breaking Bad Habits

Make it a ministry moment Tell God Stories

Breaking Bad Habits

Never lead with finances

Breaking bad habits --Meal/special event Continuous food serving Was to benefit children’s music camp scholarship—not many children even eating breakfast

Nobody ever shared how much was needed per scholarship or total No goal set for event Choir director held up the boxes that gifts were to be placed in at end of event-some had already left

Breaking Bad Habits --what could have been Children choir could have performed—highlight the ministry Choir Director could have shared how the previous year’s experience benefitted worship life this year

A goal could have been established Gift envelopes could have been given out listing gifts needed that could be returned next week when they had a checkbook

Plenty more ideas

Breaking bad habits INFORM The who, what, when, where

Okay to tell “how much”, but tell answer to the other as well

Breaking bad habits Motivate Tell what God will do with the outcome of your fundraising Answers the question of “why”?

Breaking Bad Habits ASK

For enough For specific amounts Collect Responses

Breaking Bad Habits

Say Thank You

breaking bad habits Worst Things I’ve seen Gifts being “accepted”

No gift chart Only $$$--no ministry bulletin announcements asking for support Finance Committee talking stewardship “Extra Mile giving” for mortgage

Breaking bad habits More Worst things I’ve seen Emphasis on tithing

Refusing to “Pledge” or ask for pledges Accepting mediocrity

No pastoral involvement in appeal
