3 years old or 3rd grade High school – buster Has something for everyone BUSTER’s programme for 2009 is ready, and it includes hundreds of films from all corners of the world. We once again think that this year’s programme is the best we’ve put together. BUSTER’s films are funny, unique, thought-provoking, sad, dramatic, lively and captivating. To put it briefly: quality films in all genres. The films range far and wide: from minor productions to great entertainment, from serious documentaries to incisive shorts. But no matter what genre, the aim is always to give our audience a rich, varied and substantial film experience. During the entire festival, children and youth of all ages – possibly accompanied by their grown-up sidekicks – can embark on whirlwind journeys to distant countries, be absorbed in historical dramas, see world premieres, meet filmmakers and strut down the red carpet. Things went really well for BUSTER last year. The Nordea Foundation is supporting five initiatives which we are extremely happy to get going with. In ‘BUSTER gives it a go’, cinematic experiences are combined with workshops, and BUSTER is this year cooperating with The Royal Danish Theatre to allow young cinemagoers to try out some opera, ballet and classical music in the beautiful rehearsal rooms on Kongens Nytorv. ‘BUSTER on the move’ is an initiative that ensures that the festival is not just addressed to Copenhageners. a series of exiled film screenings makes sure that BUSTER is accessible from Næstved to Nuuk. OREGON is Denmark’s largest film competition for young filmmakers, and a jury consisting of both established industry representatives and young film enthusiasts selects the year’s best productions. BUSTER’s educational DVD makes sure that the festival can reach out into the country’s classrooms. BUSTER has bought the rights and assembled teaching materials for 12 shorts and documentaries, which will be distributed to all schools across Denmark in September. Cross Media Lab is the most comprehensive project, and you can already now look forward to its launch in 2010. You can read more about this project on page 46. ‘BUSTER for real’ is a recurrent programme series, which this year focuses on the environment. In cooperation with the Danish Science Festival and heerup Museum, BUSTER is hosting a number of fun and educative workshops and screening environmental films from all over the world. There will also be recycling workshops, where junk is turned into toys, and a workshop on healthy food with NordiskNaturligvis. In our animation workshops, organised in collaboration with Projekt anima and The animation Workshop, children can try out different animation techniques under the expert guidance of some of the world’s best animators. as a result of last year’s high attendance figures, BUSTER has this year extended the festival period by an extra weekend, where we offer film experiences for both children and grown-ups. You can look forward to breakneck action, hair-raising excitement and tear-jerking romance for the entire family. The industry platform CPh:Screening Junior will continue again this year, giving interested film buyers and festivals the chance to see special screenings of Nordic children’s and youth films. Every year, BUSTER is dependent on a large number of partners, who each in their own way support the festival. There are therefore many we would like to thank: sponsors, funding bodies, volunteers, trainees and everyone else who has made it possible to get it all going. Our special thanks go to all the participating cinemas. Without their willingness to take part, there would be no festival. Take your time and read our programme with patience and curiosity. Find a film that meets your demands – it costs only 15 kroner to see. BUSTER can where others can’t... Enjoy!

OPENING GaLa

it’s not Me i swear Philippe falardeau

What do you do to stop your parents’ nerve-wracking and never-ending arguments? 10-year-old Léon opts for the somewhat untraditional solution of setting their bedroom on fire. On the whole, the film’s young protagonist is not quite like other children. his favourite hobbies include, among other things, suicide attempts, burglary and vandalism. But the young pathological liar commits all his atrocities with a captivating charm, and one never doubts that this terrorist only has the best intentions. ‘It’s Not Me I Swear’ is a moving, hysterical and incredibly funny tale about Léon’s dramatic and confused approach to life. The film won the audience award at this year’s CPh:PIX, and a Crystal Bear at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

Sylvie verheyde In 11-year-old Stella’s house, there are no parents who tell her that she needs to do her homework. and there is nobody who reminds her to go to bed in good time. Stella’s parents are running a small working-class bar in late 1970s Paris, where there is constant partying, drunk adults and worldly wisdom served in bottles. The obstinate Stella doesn’t have much time for the other children her age, but is nonetheless happy when she befriends her classmate Gladys, who reads both Balzac and Duras because she wants to, and who introduces Stella to a whole new world of culture. ‘Stella’ is told entirely from the young girl’s perspective and makes brilliant use of her voice-over narrative, as it describes life in the transition from Barbie dolls to boyfriends.

super brother birger Larsen

For 10-year-old anton it’s hard to imagine anything more embarrassing than an older brother who can’t defend him against the school bullies. But that’s the unlucky situation he’s in, because his brother, Buller, is autistic and attends a special class, as he gets nervous every time something happens that diverges from the norms. The exhausted single mother of the two boys tries to get Buller to get better through various forms of alternative medicine, but it’s only when a crazy remote control from outer space lands in the local park and ends up in the brothers’ hands that anton gets the older brother he’s always dreamt about. The new Buller is both bold and tough, but is that possibly too much of a good thing? ‘Superbror’ is directed by Birger Larsen, who made ‘Dance of the Polar Bears’ in 1990.

Monsters buster Martin Schmidt

Oliver and Lasse’s grandfather loves to entertain his grandchildren with grim stories about his time as a monster buster. Oliver, the older of the two, doesn’t really believe his stories, but when their fitness-loving parents, who tend to be the quintessence of political correctness, start behaving in an alarmingly strange way, the children call in their grandfather, who says that they have been haunted by the dangerous self-mutating shadow monster, which goes from victim to victim and makes everyone act in a totally insane way. Luckily, Oliver has the power to fight the monsters, and together with his brother and best friends the large monster chase gets going, which also ends up being a chase for the school’s beautiful new girl and a struggle against the nasty Philip.

the girl fredrik edfeldt

In the middle of the large Swedish forests lives a 10-year-old girl. her family is looking forward to a journey to africa, where her parents are meant to work on a development project, but the girl is too small to join them and therefore has to spend the summer with her bohemian aunt, who doesn’t know too much about bringing up children. and when she even sets off sailing with a man she’s only just met, leaving the holiday child to herself, the girl decides to take matters into her own hands. This is the beginning of a tragic and humorous story about a child’s first steps away from the carefreeness of being a child to the heavy burden of adult responsibility and the at times - at least from a child’s point of view - absurd conventions.

Billy, who otherwise tends to be a reliable boy, seeks refuge among the neighbourhood’s troublemakers and starts to behave really badly. After having run away from home, 13-year-old Marco returns to the Gipsy camp on the outskirts of Marseilles, where he has grown up. Here, he leads a rootless existence with his friends and distant family, and spends his time attending cockfights, making bold dives and doing other pranks. ‘Khamsa’ is a raw and moving portrayal of a harsh life at the edge of society, and with alarming precision depicts Marco’s gradual descent into a fatal and escalating criminal career, to which no end is in sight.

Four short films for 5- to 8-year-olds. In the animated ‘Varmints’, a small creature is caught off-guard by a dark and filthy metropolis, which is devouring rural bliss with great force and at an alarming pace. The protagonist of ‘Love Child’ resorts to drastic measures to capture his parents’ attention, who only care about the family’s spoilt cat. ‘Ella and the astronaut’ is about an imaginative girl, who dreams herself away from Earth and out into the universe. In ‘Elephants’, a small house is invaded by a herd of elephants, and in spite of their grey skin, they have a colourful effect on the lives of the inhabitants. The themes of the shorts are a wonderful mixture of pollution, parents and pure fantasy.

Five short films for 8- to 11-year-olds. There is nothing worse than when ones parents argue, and in ‘The Song’, 9-year-old Sebastian takes matters into his own hands to create a family idyl. The long-haired and tattooed bully in ‘aqualorius’ is given a good scare when the underwater monster, which inhabits the school swimming pool, suddenly is out after him instead of the chosen victim. In the animated ‘For Mathilde’, a young girl whirls through a big city, which is at once confusing and fascinating. The protagonist in ‘Varde’ is split between his geeky friend and the cool clique, and before he knows it, he has locked the nerd into the cellar. In ‘So Close’, a young girl embarks on a journey with her grandfather from the safe playground in the park to the dangerous battlefields of the Second World War. These short films offer hair-raising suspense and dreamy animation, and each of the protagonists are confronted with a number of boundary-transgressing experiences.

Five short films for 8- to 11-year-olds. In ‘Jerrycan’, a group of boys are bored stiff and while away their time blowing things up. ‘Oh, My God!’ is moaned from inside the closet, when a girl imaginatively emits fabricated orgasmic noises for the benefit of her gawping girlfriends. On ‘The Feast Day’ adults are allowed to eat children, and it is a matter of life and death if you have a butcher as a babysitter. In ‘The Day I Grew Up’, a boy struggles with grief after losing his mother, but finds comfort in a magical book given to him by an old bookseller. ‘The Mouse’ is a fine story about a young girl’s first encounter with love and the problems she has dealing with and expressing strong emotions such as jealousy and despair. The films contain beautiful pictures, laughter-provoking acting and bloody animation, and the at times heavy topics are served with a glint in the eye.

Five short films for 8- to 11-year-olds. In ‘Sun shine’, a young girl imagines that a man in the neighbours’ family is her missing father, and she shuns no means to pursue her fantasy. ‘Love Does Grow on Trees’ takes place in the time before the Internet, when porn was something you read in magazines and hid under your bed. The protagonist of ‘The Rainbow Skin’ is highly fascinated by angles and their ability to fly, but he is confronted with the brutal reality when his older brother jumps to his death from the apartment window as a result of being bullied. In ‘Because There are Things You Never Forget’, a bitter old lady executes a group of boys’ beloved leather ball with her knitting needle – and that was a bad idea! The animated ‘Pig Me’ tells the moving, amusing and fatal story about a small pig, which persistently tries to be sold as a pet. The short films deal with everything from flying porn magazines to electric footballs, and the stories are both touching, serious and totally nuts.

Four short films for 12- to 15-year-olds. In ‘See you’, a maladjusted teenage girl is finding it hard to get over the loss of her beloved twin brother, but one day, a new boy joins her class, and in many ways he seems eerily familiar. It’s no fun being the only one who doesn’t have an iPod, but the protagonist in ‘Just Like the Others’ finds a creative solution to a material problem. In the animated ‘Road Kill’, a frog is run over and taken to the emergency ward, after which it starts on a rehabilitation programme using every trick in the book. In ‘huset Overfor’, two boys challenge each other to going on an exploration of the eerie house on the other side of the road, where they are met with a series of chilling surprises. It can be both intoxicatingly great and unbearably difficult being a teenager, and these short films deal with many different aspects of the turbulent times of youth.

Four short films for youths aged 15+. Things are going really well for the boys on the handball team in ‘Træneren’, but the team’s coach is a bit too enthusiastic about the goalkeeper, who finds it hard to deal with the embarrassing situation. The lonely and overweight teenager ‘Cathrine’ starts a relationship with an older boy, which doesn’t go down well with her parents, and suddenly Catherine has to chose between love and her parents. The animation with the impressing title ‘Man is the Only Bird Who Carries his Own Cage’ is a fascinating fable about humans’ paradoxical and fundamental quest for freedom. In ‘2 Birds’, a group of teenagers flirt with both each other and with drugs at a random private party, but when the drugs take effect for good, the night takes a fateful turn. These four short films deal with the serious problems of youth, but things never get so dark that there isn’t a light at the end of the tunnel.

The small and lively dancer who goes by the name of Lil’a dances both hip hop, new style and street dance. But his favourite dance is krumping, which like some form of therapy channels all his aggressions and compulsive thoughts into positive, pulsating movements. In ‘Slaves’, two refugees aged 9 and 15 tell the horrendous story about how they were taken captive and turned into slaves by the government-funded militia in Sudan. The beautifully animated documentary illustrates and interprets the children’s story. In ‘12 Notes Down’, the choir boy Jorgis is faced with the inescapable biological fact that his voice is about to break. he has been a choir boy most of his life, but now has to form a new identity outside the settings he’s used to.

When 14-year-old Laura’s best friend anne was diagnosed with cancer, anne had the idea of making a film about her path to recovery to sow hope in other children with cancer. But anne didn’t make it. Now, ‘Laura & anne 4 Ever’ has become Laura’s film, in which she talks about her best friend and about losing someone, who means the world to you. 13-year-old Marth collects dead animals and has fish and birds conserved in jam jars. The bizarre hobby conceals painful emotions brought about by his parents’ divorce, and when these emotions become too intrusive, the only solution is to cut himself, as Marth explains in ‘Pets in Pots’. 13 years ago, Luca was born into a happy nuclear family, with a mother and a father who loved each other. Five years later, they got divorced, but that unfortunately didn’t mean the end to their constant arguing. Now, Luca is split between her parents, who hate each other, and she has to act as a spokesman between them. It’s no surprise that Luca is ‘Sick of It all’.

Berny Pålsson is a phenomenon in Sweden, where thousands of youths have read the harsh and highly personal books about serious topics such as drug abuse, mental illness, rape and cutting. The books are written in a beautiful and direct language, which resorts to no added sweeteners to paint a raw portrait of life filled with pain and anxiety. In the film, the camera is everywhere and shows us a picture of existence marked by addiction and thoughts of suicide, but where the will to live shines through in the shape of a sublime writing talent.

little Miss Grownup + let’s be Together 80 min.

‘Little Miss Grownup’ is about 14-year-old Xenia, who is the oldest sister in a family with a mother and four children. Xenia has assumed the role of “other” parent and is very attached to her siblings, but she is also forgetting what it means to be a child and a teenager. Xenia has to face the hard choice of leaving her family in order to attend a boarding school and to thereby accept the hard work of “being young”. ‘Little Miss Grownup’ won the award for best documentary at last year’s BUSTER, and we are happy to be able to show the film again this year. The Brazilian boy hairon, who is soon turning 15, is interested in needle sharp stilettos and Dior sunglasses worth 2000 kr. his stepfather from Jutland spends his time fishing and installing cupboards, while hairon’s biological father, who still lives in Brazil, finds it difficult to accept the boy’s less than ordinary feminine inclinations. Nanna Frank Møller has made a wonderful film about a boy who just wants to be himself, even if this definitely isn’t the easiest thing in the world. ‘Let’s Be Together’ oozes of warmth, humour, frustration and hope, and places a well-meant and effective kick up the backside of narrow-mindedness and prejudice.

“I simply never thought that I deserve a friend,” says one of the invisible girls in Sids Stausholm’s fine, partially animated documentary about three young girls, who have been exposed to being either ignored or bullied by their classmates all their lives. Seen from the outside, it’s incomprehensible why exactly these three girls have ended up being scapegoats, but the stories about their lives show the chilling fact that they had to meet each other on the internet before even considering that it wasn’t their own fault. Maisha and her younger brother have been living with their foster parents since their mother was deported back to Tanzania, after having smuggled drugs. Defiance and teenage rebellion is festering in Maisha and affects everyone around her. In order to keep in touch with her mother, she calls Tanzania every week, but she would much rather visit her to tell her, how stupid and wrong she thinks her mother had been. The journey becomes a reality, and suddenly, Maisha has to stand face to face with her mother and her lies.

anton and Felix are about to graduate, but instead of worrying about exams and good grades, they spend their time freewheeling and enjoying life. But when Felix is given a reality check in the form of a frank conversation with the headmaster, they try to hatch a plan that will allow them to make up for the wasted spring term. In order to improve their bad command of Spanish, the two chums go to Barcelona, but it’s not their language skills that enjoy most attention. The best friends anders and Peter might at first sight seem like a bit of an odd couple. They still live at home with their parents and are throwing all their efforts into finding the love of their lives. and this is where their mothers are good role models, as anders and Peter attribute great importance to a cooked dinner and a clean home. ‘The Search for the One and Only’ is a subtle and underplayed documentary that evokes memories of Max Kestner’s ‘Blue Collar White Christmas’ and offers deadpan humour along the lines of Jim Jarmusch and aki Kaurismäki.

Father and Mother Ghost are off to town, and Godfrey has to look after Labolina. He’s very keen to make sure that his sister doesn’t get scared, but maybe Labolina is more courageous than her older brother? In ‘The Tweetlings - Mice in a Row’, Sille and Saxe are collecting berries in an eggshell and are faced with a bit of a mission when they have to look after seven cheeky mouse children – it’s hard to count them when they never stand still. In ‘Tally Ho, Pancake!’, Mr Bumble has just made a delicious pancake, but just as he’s about to flip it, the pancake flies out of the window and escapes. Soon, the pancake is followed by the whole forest. A tiny little rabbit can’t quite keep up with his larger and slimmer friends. He leaps around all the time saying ‘boo!’, but nobody seems to get frightened. But one day, a huge and fierce dog comes along, and the rabbit finally has his moment. In ‘Miriam’s Broken Picture’, Miriam and her younger brother and their daft hen end up breaking the frame of their parents’ wedding photograph during a slightly wild game of football in the living room. They’re at their wit’s end and are plagued by a bad conscience when their mother and father come home with gifts.

It’s no doubt more fun to eat ones boring mashed potatoes with peas when the yellow lump comes to life and the peas grow huge and dance around in the kitchen, as they do in ‘Mash Go Splash’. In ‘The Magic Water’, two exhausted friends sit in a warm and dry desert. One of them finds a small oasis with water, which doesn’t behave normally, and which makes it much more fun to be in the heat. In a mysterious and somewhat dangerous adventure world, a flock of peculiar creatures are on their guard against the great dinosaur, which is stomping off. But in ‘Flap Your Wings’, one of the animals suddenly realises that it can fly. Drawn with plain lines, ‘Chicken Wings’ tells the story about a girl and a werewolf in the Wild West, who end up arguing about what they should do with a poor chicken that passes by. The house cats Pim and Pom are very interested in what it’s like to live the life of a street cat. But even if both of them are keen, it’s actually not as exciting to be a wild cat as first assumed.

Workshop: recycled toys à la Heerup The Danish artist henry heerup (1907-93) exhibited his first work made from recycled materials in 1936 and called it a “garbage model”. For heerup, the garbage model was a democratic art form that anyone could make. Partly because the materials were freely available, partly because no technical expertise was required to produce garbage models. Taking heerup’s way of thinking as a starting point and further inspired by ‘Small Faces’ - the film, in which children in other countries make toys from anything you can think of - heerup Museum and the Malaysianborn artist amir Zainorin will host garbage workshops, where you can build your own “garbage car” from recycled materials such as used tea-light candles.

Stomp is an amalgamation of music and dance, where everyday items are reused in a different way than originally intended, namely to produce rhythms, noises and sounds. There will also be rhyme and rap, cool songs and funky moves. You don’t need any musical knowledge to join in. In connection with the workshop, we will show the life-affirming short film series ‘Small Faces’, which shows how children in other countries make toys that are very different to the ones we find in our own toy shops, but no less imaginative for it. So come and see films, and take part afterwards in a session filled to the brim with rhythms, energy, joie de vivre, partying and noise!

BUSTER FOR REAL - THE ENVIRONMENT

Addicted to Plastic Ian Connacher

The eco-thriller ‘Addicted to Plastic’ looks at how addicted we are to plastic. Just think about how much plastic you use every day. Plastic is indispensable for our civilisation, but much of it ends up in the oceans, where it causes much damage to the environment. The world’s inadequate handling of the great amount of plastic waste has given rise to enormous problems. What can we do about it - and what is already being done? These questions will be given extra consideration by a professional panel, consisting of Christian Poll, environmental policy expert at the Danish Society for Nature Conservation, Søren Rahbek, leader of the packaging department at the Danish Technological Institute, and Helle Fabiansen, Environmental Consultant of Plastindustrien, the Danish trade association of plastic producers.

The City of Bees

Laila Hodell og Bertel Torne Olsen Did you know that bees fly up to 40 km per hour? Or that if you surround them with smoke, they fill up with honey and therefore don’t sting? All working bees are female. In the exciting film ‘The City of Bees’, we follow the lives and activities of bees during the course of one year. We learn how bees build their hive with wax, how they collect nectar, how they get a new queen, what a bee’s sting is, and plenty more. The film contains fantastic close-ups, where you can see all the details of, among other things, the bees, their larvae and wax cells. After the screening, the nature guide Hans-Jørgen Rasmussen from Frederiksberg Council will come and show us lots of interesting objects from the world of bees and host a small competition, where you among other things can win some of his freshly made honey. Hans-Jørgen Rasmussen is responsible for the beehives on the roof of Frederiksberg Town Hall.

Workshop: Classical Music at the Danish Royal Theatre Peter and the Wolf by Suzie Templeton

The workshop is introduced with a screening of the beautiful, Oscarwinning puppet animation ‘Peter and the Wolf’, Prokofiev’s classical music adventure about Peter, who lives in the forest with his grandfather. Afterwards, Goldschmidt, who has played in many large concerts for children with his Middle East Peace Orchestra, will introduce the different instruments and try them out together with the children. The concerts of the Middle East Peace Orchestra have a tradition of setting the whole concert hall in motion, so that even the great chandeliers in the theatre bounce along, and the workshop with Henrik Goldschmidt will no doubt also be a sparkling musical experience out of the ordinary.

Workshop: Ballet at the Danish Royal Theatre Ballerina by Kunuk Platoú, Valerie E. Saunders

Everyday life for a ballet dancer at the Royal Danish Ballet is not an ordinary affair: hours of practice, daily dance rehearsals, sore muscles and tuition by teachers from all over the world. Ballet dancers are trained from a very young age to use their bodies to tell dramatic stories and express big emotions. We are showing the film ‘Ballerina’, which follows three of the youngest ballerinas. Dressed in silk skirts and dancing shoes, the small girls play and dance in all four corners of the Royal Theatre. For dinner, they eat liquorice paté and candy mash, before appearing on the large stage to dance in front of king, queen and the city’s elite. ‘Ballerina’ is a must-see film for all children with a penchant for tutus and tender toes. Afterwards, you can come and try out the world of ballet, guided by Anne Crosset and Kompagni B, which consists of the ballet school’s own children.

ANIMATION WORKSHOPS

Claymation I Take part in exploring the fascinating universe of claymation. We will create various fun figures with modelling clay and bring them to life in short film sequences, which you will film yourself. The workshop is run by Rony Oren, who also attended last year’s BUSTER. He is known for his funny and wonderful claymation films and tv-series, which have been sold to 80 countries.

Claymation II In this workshop, figures and backgrounds will be created for a small story that was written in advance, and subsequently everything will be shot on film. The technique is a bit more demanding than the one used in the ‘Claymation I’ workshop, as the figures are given a steel wire skeleton before the clay is applied. Helle Harbou is an animation director and pictorial artist and has among other things worked as an animator and background painter for Dansk Tegnefilm 2.

ANIMATION WORKSHOPS

Puppet Animation At the puppet animation workshop one gets to use metal, modelling wax and shaping materials. The director Luba Mukibi Lynch uses an African story as a starting point and shows how it can be turned into a beautiful and funny puppet animation. Luba is trained in Animation and Experimental Filmmaking at Diagonal Akademiet on Gotland in Sweden and has participated in numerous film projects.

Pixilation with fruit and vegetables Well-known fruit and vegetables are brought to life by being turned into figures with faces, arms and legs. Atta Havlykke has written a story where they can play the characters. When the work is done, the figures can be eaten by the children. The technique of moving objects is called pixilation, and apart from fruit and veggies, you can also use shoes, furniture and anything else you come across. Your fantasy is your limit. Atta Havlykke trained at the Danish Design School, specialising in animation.

ANIMATION WORKSHOPS

Cut-out animation I One of the most popular cut-out animations is ‘Circleen’. Most Danes know the small girl in the spotted dress, and that’s why we think that it’s fun to place this figure into new stories, which will be made into a short film. Trylle Vilstrup is an animation director and has made his own films and animated at the studio of his father, Jannik Hastrup.

Cut-out animation II We have made a story about Noah’s Ark with children who travel around the world to teach people about peace and about making good use of the planet’s resources. The workshop emphasises the actual animation of the figures and requires exceptional patience. The result, on the other hand, will be a film that lasts several minutes. Cut-out figures are flat bits of cardboard that are moved across a background. Erling Ericsson has spent the past many years travelling around and teaching animation to children all over the world with the project ‘Animation Without Borders’, and this film will form part of this project.

ANIMATION WORKSHOPS

Classic animation Classic animation is best known from the films of Walt Disney, but the technique has been used by many other studios. In this workshop, the participants will work with individual figures, which will come to life drawing by drawing. This technique requires special drawing abilities and lots of patience. Darren Kordich is from England and has lived a number of years in Denmark, where he has worked for A.Film and has made his own projects.

Animation and sound In this workshop, children get to work with some scenes from a film where the sound is still missing. The aim is to make sound effects, choose music and record the dialogues. In this way, the children get to experience how important sound is for a film. If you choose the wrong music, or voices that don’t fit the characters, the film might well end up being a failure. Jonas Andreas Jensen has worked with the ANIMA project for a number of years, has taught at the European Film College and now works as a sound technician.

Årets Snude In keeping with tradition, the Årets Snude awards will be elected among the productions of Project ANIMA. Of the 100 animations that were produced by Project ANIMA since last year’s BUSTER, five films have been nominated. These five productions have been shown to the participants of the festival’s animation workshops, who in turn have cast a vote and chosen a winner. At the event, the nominated films are shown with all the films produced at the festival’s workshops. To conclude, we will serve non-alcoholic champagne.

ANIMATION WORKSHOPS

Turns of Phrases The workshop is aimed at the multi-cultural public school, where numerous languages and cultures meet and interact. We will work with turns of phrases, which we will turn into short animated films. The participants start by formulating the meaning of the chosen phrase. Then it’s time to spin a yarn around the subject, preferably in a way that makes the concrete action reveal the meaning of the phrase. The actual production of the short animated film follows the professional sequence: synopsis, storyboard, design, animation and, finally, sound. The animation technique used is called cut-out, where jumping jacks are cut out of cardboard and animated beneath the camera. All workshops are held directly at the schools that sign up.

BUSTER, the Black Diamond and Classy Mondays invites you to a film screening with a live musical introduction on the occasion of the 10th birthday of the Black Diamond. To introduce the film, the Diamond Ensemble will offer a lively and musical presentation of the story’s characters. ‘Peter and the Wolf’ is an exciting, eerie and poetic musical narration about the curious boy Peter and his friend the duck, the scheming cat, the helpful bird, the nasty wolf and the old grandfather. First Time

Barbara Rothenberg Ten years after Tomas Villum Jensen’s fine adaptation of Dennis Jürgensen’s Danish romance classic ‘Love at First Hiccup’, the original story about Anja and Viktor is now given an affectionate remake by Hollywood. With Barbara Rothenberg – who charmed more than half of Denmark when she played the main part in the TV series ‘Nanna’ in the late 1980s – directing, the American version sends nods of recognition to the Danish original, while being brought up to date in terms of both language and culture. If the almost endless slipstream of ‘Anja and Viktor’ films has made you forget the warm humour and youthful innocence of the original, ‘Love at First Hiccup’ is a perfect opportunity to re-experience the hiccuping romance on the silver screen.

SEMINaR ON GaMES

one story, two screens What will it take to make producers of children’s film and games developers cooperate more closely? BUSTER poses this question to producers from both industries, and two different cases illustrate how children are offered a broader experience when games and films work together on the same story and thereby create a higher synergy. The first project that will be showcased is the new Norwegian film and game ‘Knerten’. The second case that exemplifies the close cooperation between filmmaking and game development is the Danish project ‘Prop and Bertha’, which is a work in progress. The producers of the two cases and representatives from National and European support programmes will discuss the options on how to support cross media producers, how to strengthen the cross media co operations and finally how to work more systematically on marketing and distribution strategies.

The seminar takes place on September the 23rd from 15-17 at huset i Magstræde. From 17 to 19 there will be drinks and a chance to mingle. Registration opens at 14 at husets Café. Coffee and sandwiches will be served from 14-15. address: Entrance from Rådhusstræde 13, 1466 Copenhagen K Invited to attend the seminar are producers of Nordic children’s film and games, the film institutes of the Nordic countries and European buyers of children’s films. The seminar is a part of a preliminary study initiated by Nordic Game Program. The purpose of the seminar is to debate how to create a closer cooperation between the producers of Nordic children’s TV, films and games, and in the end strengthen the distribution of these products. BUSTER is co-producing the seminar with MEDIa Desk Denmark. To register for the event, please contact Cecilie Stranger-Thorsen at cecilie.stranger-thorsen@nordicgameprogram.org

BUSTER 2010 Look forward to the next BUSTER film festival, 10 to 20 September 2010! BUSTER gives it a go: Sport and health on film - be active with BUSTER! BUSTER for real: girl identity on film - accurate or presumed? Free educational DVD: 12 new films with complete teaching materials!

Cross Media Lab 2010 In 2010, BUSTER will establish a large Cross Media Lab, an experimental and innovative melting pot covering computer and console games, mobile solutions, the internet, radio, TV, film and animation. The aim of the Cross Media Lab is to raise children’s and youths’ awareness about the strengths and weaknesses of the different media, and to nurture a critical approach towards the growing media landscape. The participants in the Cross Media Lab will get involved in everything from the creation of computer games, TV and radio programmes to exercises in cross-media communication - be it blogs, text-message chains or social networks, or be it making animations for the internet, films and mobile phones. Participants will have an abundance of opportunities to dive into the Cross Media landscape. It will be possible to sign up to workshops in advance, but there will also be attractions for those who pop by after a trip to the cinema. Take out the calendar of your school class or family and make a note of 10 to 20 September 2010 - we are looking forward to welcoming you to an enlightening day at Øksnehallen!
