News T-Mobile expansion advances 4G experience for millions of users Network is faster than ever in nearly 100 markets! On June 1, T-Mobile super-charged the speed of its 4G network to 42 megabits per second (Mbps) capability in dozens of markets across the country. Now, T-Mobile customers in 96 US markets have access to the fastest 4G speeds T-Mobile has to offer. It’s a dramatic doubling of the network that’s not just about speed—users will experience greater capacity and reliability in addition to lightningfast downloads. The launch of 42Mbps capability means America’s Largest 4G Network™ is now faster than ever before. The capacity jump is available in major metro areas from coast to coast, including Albuquerque, Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego and San Francisco, among others. Already T-Mobile’s nationwide 4G network is up to three times faster than today’s standard 3G networks. On newer devices designed to take full advantage of the 42Mbps capability, you’ll enjoy downloading movies and apps, watching live events, sharing video and participating in multiplayer gaming at remarkably faster, consistent speeds. T-Mobile has seen average download speeds approaching 10Mbps with peak speeds of 27Mbps on the T-Mobile Rocket 3.0 laptop stick—the company’s first 42Mbps device. T-Mobile expects more than 150 million American’s to have access to these increased 4G speeds by mid-2011. Our 4G network (HSPA+21) is available in more than 190 markets.

Tips Connect in more ways with Wi-Fi Calling T-Mobile gives you innovative ways to connect. You can access high-speed data and talk over Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi Calling. With a Wi-Fi Calling-compatible phone you can talk or surf from home, the coffee shop, the airport, or anywhere Wi-Fi is available. Plus, access to high-speed data is unlimited when you connect with Wi-Fi. And if your phone doesn’t support Wi-Fi Calling, T-Mobile has a huge selection of Wi-Fi Calling-enabled devices to choose from.

1. 2. 3.

How to use Wi-Fi Calling Enable Wi-Fi in your phone’s settings, connect to a Wi-Fi network and then turn on Wi-Fi Calling, found in your Applications tray. When the Wi-Fi Calling feature is on, your phone displays the Wi-Fi Calling icon on the Status bar on the top of your screen. If you go out of range of the Wi-Fi network, your phone makes a beep and shows a message when a call might drop.

Wi-Fi Calling offers three connection options: Wi-Fi Preferred All calls go through Wi-Fi when connected to a Wi-Fi network. Calls drop as you leave the Wi-Fi range. Cellular Preferred Calls go over the cellular network, and Wi-Fi Calling is a backup if the cellular network is not available. Wi-Fi Only Calls can be made when connected to a Wi-Fi network. If there is no Wi-Fi network, then your calls cannot connect. Summer 2011

Previously it was all cash and always a big problem.” Witness is reticent to alter what he does for a mass audience, so he was actually pleased not to be identified in the Sidekick commercials, even if viewers have to do a little work to track him down, since a gradual process of discovery “allows me to set the scale and tone for everything that happens in the future.” But the commercials did make him a household face, if not name. Does the underground hip-hop world think he sold out? “There was concern from people I work with that it would be taken that way,” he admits. And befittingly, since Witness was discovered by putting a parody of fast-rapper George Watsky on Witness at an April T-Mobile event with Twilight star Nikki Reed. YouTube, Watsky has posted a parody of Witness’s TV ads, complete with a Carly figure in a pink dress, played by a “My old non-smartphone just bearded, chubby Zach Galifianakis type. seemed like something I wanted to hold No major “beef” here, though. “I thought onto,” he says, as if talking about a it was hilarious,” Witness says. “I have childhood teddy bear. “But I didn’t have no problem with that guy having the a smartphone phobia! It’s just that having premier ‘fast-rapper’ title. My video was access to the Internet outside my house something I did for fun, and I got lucky just seemed . . . a bit much. It kind of and incredible things happened. My own ruins some old-school Internet life perks fan base has had nothing but positive that are out the window now—like, ‘Oh, reaction to the commercials—which is when I get home, I’ll get to look at my crazy, because we expected at least e-mail.’ That was a little something to one person to do the typical ‘Screw this look forward to! A week ago, I was driving guy, he’s not my own personal bedroom home from work, and I had pulled over musician anymore’ thing.” and checked Facebook and Twitter and The attention he’s gotten from being already seen everything that I would have Carly’s fast-talking muse “was never gone home to go see before. So when I part of any end game of mine, but it’s got home, I didn’t know what to do. I was definitely changed my perception of

years, whether I make it or not, I’ll look on this and be like ‘Damn. What was my problem with women when I was 26?’ And I’m all right with that.” For a twentysomething technically savvy enough to produce sophisticated albums in his living room, Witness does have a few slight Luddite tendencies. He’d never even owned a web-enabled mobile device until early this year, just a couple of months before he got the fateful call asking if he’d help pitch smartphones. 20

like, ‘Uh, I guess I’ll make a sandwich?’” Now that he can’t live without a smartphone like the rest of us, “the things that amaze me most are probably underwhelming to most people,” he says. “Like how when I get an idea, instead of this little notebook that I kept in my back pocket for six years, I’m now using my phone as a voice recorder. I feel like I’m cheating on the notebook. As apps go, there are emulators for video game systems that I grew up with, and I’m thinking my six-year-old self wouldn’t

what may be possible. I don’t know that I would fall into the mainstream unless it happens organically. But whether people on a global level are interested in my music or whether I can just live my life and play shows for a hundred people in every city in the US, I’d be fine with either.” So if you’re a booker or major exec who’s willing to take Witness as he is and offer that next career boost, it won’t hurt to send him an email query. He’ll probably even read it before he gets home.
